Air bubble breakup in shear water flows generated by a plug conduit:An experimental investigation

In the context of a sudden contraction plug conduit,the near-wall area experiences a significant shearing effect of water flow,however,the extent to which this shearing effect occurs in bubble-water flow and the related variation mechanisms of air bubble size and number remain unclear.This study employs a model test method to investigate the diffusion process of bubble-water flow in a sudden contraction plug conduit.The size and number of bubbles,as well as their distribution along the shearing section under varying initial air volume conditions,are studied in detail using a high-speed image acquisition system.The experimental findings reveal a self-similar relationship between the number and size of bubbles and their cross-sectional distribution over time.The bubble number and size vary in three stages,i.e.,quasi-suspension,shearing,and shearing completion stages.The direction perpendicular to the conduit exhibits peak values in bubble number distribution over the three stages,with peak value location varying with the near-wall area.As time progresses,the peak value increases,and a larger initial air volume corresponds to a smaller distance of the peak value location from the wall.The size of air bubbles near the wall is consistent with the minimum diameter of air bubbles in shear flow and is hardly affected by the initial air volume.These results aid in comprehending the change law of two-phase water and air flow under a strong shearing effect in the plug conduit,and provide useful insights for hydraulic design in fluid engineering.

Local hydraulic jump effects on sediment deposition in open-channel flume experiments

When a river channel is narrow,bifurcated,or intersected,or when extreme weather or geological disasters cause shed rock masses to occupy a river flood channel,local hydraulic jumps may develop in the channel.Natural disasters such as landslides,floods,and debris flows occur upstream,will result in large transport rate of large-sized gravel particles.Those particles may be blocked in hydraulic jump areas,causing river channel water depth to rise.In this study,the effect of local hydraulic jumps on the sediment deposition rate was investigated in flume experiments.The ratio of upstream and downstream Froude numbers,particle size,Sediment supply intensity,and flow discharge all affected the sediment deposition rate.With increases in the ratio of upstream and downstream Froude numbers,particle size,and sediment supply intensity,the sediment deposition rate increased.The sediment deposition rate decreased with an increase in flow discharge.Approach hydraulic conditions and particle properties jointly determined the sediment deposition rate in a hydraulic jump section,and an empirical formula was developed using those parameters to calculate the sediment deposition rate.Thus,to identify risks and prevent disasters in mountain rivers,local changes in hydraulic conditions and particle properties need to be jointly evaluated.

Low-dose intralesional injection of 5-fluorouracil and triamcinolone reduces tissue resident memory T cells in chronic eczema

BACKGROUND Tissue resident memory T(TRM)cells have been reported to play a significant role in the pathogenesis and relapse of chronic eczema.AIM To compare the efficacy and safety of the intralesional injection of 5-fluorouracil(5-FU)and triamcinolone(TA)with those associated with TA alone for the treatment of chronic eczema.METHODS A total of 168 patients were randomized to 5-FU+TA or TA groups and received a one-time intralesional injection of 5-FU+TA or TA only.Biopsies were collected before and 2 wk after treatment for evaluation of histopathological changes.All patients were followed up monthly for up to 1 year.RESULTS No serious adverse event was observed in either group.Although the mean atopic dermatitis severity index scores and effective rates were comparable between the two groups after 2 wk of treatment,the relapse rate was significantly lower in the 5-FU+TA group than in the TA group.Histological examination showed significantly fewer CD8^(+)and CD103^(+)T cells but not CD4^(+)T cells in the 5-FU+TA group.CONCLUSION One-time intralesional injection of 5-FU+TA is effective and safe for chronic eczema treatment and can further reduce the retention of T_(RM) cells in the lesional skin and the relapse rate of chronic eczema.

目的:探讨血清高迁移率族蛋白B1(HMGB1)、可溶性晚期糖基化终产物受体(sRAGE)水平对急性失代偿性心力衰竭(ADHF)患者预后的评估价值。方法:选取190例ADHF患者为研究组,另选取191例健康者为对照组,根据1年随访期是否死亡,将ADHF患者分为预后不良组(58例)和预后良好组(132例);采用酶联免疫吸附法(ELISA)检测血清HMGB1、sRAGE水平;采用Pearson法分析血清HMGB1、sRAGE水平与心功能指标及实验室指标的相关性;采用受试者工作特征(ROC)曲线分析HMGB1、sRAGE及血浆N端脑钠肽前体(NT-proBNP)对ADHF患者预后的评估价值;采用多因素Logistic回归分析影响ADHF患者预后的因素。结果:与对照组比较,研究组患者血清HMGB1、sRAGE水平更高(P均<0.05);预后良好组与不良组血清HMGB1、sRAGE水平、纽约心脏病协会(NYHA)分级、左室收缩末期内径(LVESD)、左室舒张末期内径(LVEDD)、左室射血分数(LVEF)、NT-proBNP、血清肌钙蛋白I(cTnI)、住院时间比较,差异有统计学意义(P均<0.05)。经Pearson法分析,ADHF患者血清HMGB1、sRAGE分别与LVEDD、LVESD、NT-proBNP、cTnl呈正相关,与LVEF呈负相关(P均<0.05),血清HMGB1与sRAGE呈正相关(P<0.05)。ROC曲线分析显示,HMGB1、sRAGE、NT-proBNP对ADHF患者预后不良评估价值均较高,AUC分别为0.869、0.852、0.844,最佳截断值分别为32.91 g/L、296.46 ng/L、3809.77 ng/L时,灵敏度分别为79.3%、82.8%、82.8%,特异性分别为83.3%、74.2%、79.5%。多因素logistic回归分析表明,NYHA分级、LVEF、NT-proBNP、HMGB1及sRAGE是ADHF患者预后的独立危险因素(P均<0.05)。结论:血清HMGB1、sRAGE表达与ADHF的发生及预后有关,可作为ADHF患者预后的评估指标。

Perturbation of autophagy pathways in murine alveolar macrophage by 2D TMDCs is chalcogen-dependent

Increasing risks of incidental and occupational exposures to two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides(2D TMDCs)due to their broad application in various areas raised their public health concerns.While the composition-dependent cytotoxicity of 2D TMDCs has been well-recognized,how the outer chalcogenide atoms and inner transition metal atoms differentially contribute to their perturbation on cell homeostasis at non-lethal doses remains to be identified.In the present work,we compared the autophagy induction and related mechanisms in response to WS_(2),NbS_(2),WSe_(2)and Nb Se_(2)nanosheets exposures in MH-S murine alveolar macrophages.All these 2D TMDCs had comparable physicochemical properties,overall cytotoxicity and capability in triggering autophagy in MH-S cells,but showed outer chalcogen-dependent subcellular localization and activation of autophagy pathways.Specifically,WS_(2)and NbS_(2)nanosheets adhered on the cell surface and internalized in the lysosomes,and triggered m TOR-dependent activation of autophagy.Meanwhile,WSe_(2)and Nb Se_(2)nanosheets had extensive distribution in cytoplasm of MH-S cells and induced autophagy in an m TOR-independent manner.Furthermore,the 2D TMDCs-induced perturbation on autophagy aggravated the cytotoxicity of respirable benzo[a]pyrene.These findings provide a deeper insight into the potential health risk of environmental 2D TMDCs from the perspective of homeostasis perturbation.

On Stability Discrimination of Limit Cycles for Piecewise Smooth Systems

This paper is concerned with the problem of stability discrimination of limit cycles for piecewise smooth systems. We first establish the Poincar′e map near a periodic orbit, and deduce the first order derivative of the map for general piecewise smooth systems on the plane. Then, we obtain a sufficient condition for determining the stability of limit cycles for these systems.

Application of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and neoadjuvant chemotherapy in curative surgery for esophageal cancer:A metaanalysis

BACKGROUND The effectiveness of neoadjuvant therapy in esophageal cancer(EC)treatment is still a subject of debate.AIM To compare the clinical efficacy and toxic side effects between neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy(nCRT)and neoadjuvant chemotherapy(nCT)for locally advanced EC(LAEC).METHODS A comprehensive search was conducted using multiple databases,including PubMed,EMBASE,MEDlinE,Science Direct,The Cochrane Library,China National Knowledge Infrastructure,Wanfang Database,Chinese Science and Technology Journal Database,and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database Article.Studies up to December 2022 comparing nCRT and nCT in patients with EC were selected.RESULTS The analysis revealed significant differences between nCRT and nCT in terms of disease-free survival.The results indicated that nCRT provided better outcomes in terms of the 3-year overall survival rate(OSR)[odds ratio(OR)=0.95],complete response rate(OR=3.15),and R0 clearance rate(CR)(OR=2.25).However,nCT demonstrated a better 5-year OSR(OR=1.02)than nCRT.Moreover,when compared to nCRT,nCT showed reduced risks of cardiac complications(OR=1.15)and pulmonary complications(OR=1.30).CONCLUSION Overall,both nCRT and nCT were effective in terms of survival outcomes for LAEC.However,nCT exhibited better performance in terms of postoperative complications.

Enhanced removal of antibiotic resistance genes during chicken manure composting after combined inoculation of Bacillus subtilis with biochar

This study explored the combined effects of Bacillus subtilis inoculation with biochar on the evolution of bacterial communities,antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs),and mobile genetic elements(MGEs)during the composting of chicken manure.The results showed that B.subtilis inoculation combined with biochar increased bacterial abundance and diversity as well as prolonged the compost thermophilic period.Promoted organic matter biodegradation and facilitated the organic waste compost humification process,reduced the proliferation of ARGs by altering the bacterial composition.Firmicutes and Actinobacteriota were the main resistant bacteria related to ARGs and MGEs.The decrease in ARGs and MGEs was associated with the reduction in the abundance of related host bacteria.Compost inoculation with B.subtilis and the addition of biochar could promote nutrient transformation,reduce the increase in ARGs and MGEs,and increase the abundance of beneficial soil taxa.

Enhanced hepatic metabolic perturbation of polystyrene nanoplastics by UV irradiation-induced hydroxyl radical generation

The environmental behavior of and risks associated with nanoplastics(NPs)have attracted considerable attention.However,compared to pristine NPs,environmental factors such as ultraviolet(UV)irradiation that lead to changes in the toxicity of NPs have rarely been studied.We evaluated the changes in morphology and physicochemical properties of polystyrene(PS)NPs before and after UV irradiation,and compared their hepatotoxicity in mice.The results showed that UV irradiation caused particle size reduction and increased the carbonyl index(CI)and negative charge on the particle surface.UV-aged PS NPs(aPS NPs)could induce the generation of hydroxyl radicals(·OH),but also further promoted the generation of·OH in the Fenton reaction system.Hepatic pathological damage was more severe in mice exposed to aPS NPs,accompanied by a large number of vacuoles and hepatocyte balloon-like changes and more marked perturbations in blood glucose and serum lipoprotein,alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels.In addition,exposure to PS NPs and aPS NPs,especially aPS NPs,triggered oxidative stress and significantly damaged the antioxidant capacity of mice liver.Compared with PS NPs,exposure to aPS NPs increased the number of altered metabolites in hepatic and corresponding metabolic pathways,especially glutathione metabolism.Our research suggests that UV irradiation can disrupt the redox balance in organisms by promoting the production of·OH,enhancing PS NPs-induced liver damage and metabolic disorders.This study will help us understand the health risks of NPs and to avoid underestimation of the risks of NPs in nature.

Comparison of the Minimum Bounding Rectangle and Minimum Circumscribed Ellipse of Rain Cells from TRMM

Based on the TRMM dataset, this paper compares the applicability of the improved MCE(minimum circumscribed ellipse), MBR(minimum bounding rectangle), and DIA(direct indexing area) methods for rain cell fitting. These three methods can reflect the geometric characteristics of clouds and apply geometric parameters to estimate the real dimensions of rain cells. The MCE method shows a major advantage in identifying the circumference of rain cells. The circumference of rain cells identified by MCE in most samples is smaller than that identified by DIA and MBR, and more similar to the observed rain cells. The area of rain cells identified by MBR is relatively robust. For rain cells composed of many pixels(N> 20), the overall performance is better than that of MCE, but the contribution of MBR to the best identification results,which have the shortest circumference and the smallest area, is less than that of MCE. The DIA method is best suited to small rain cells with a circumference of less than 100 km and an area of less than 120 km^(2), but the overall performance is mediocre. The MCE method tends to achieve the highest success at any angle, whereas there are fewer “best identification”results from DIA or MBR and more of the worst ones in the along-track direction and cross-track direction. Through this comprehensive comparison, we conclude that MCE can obtain the best fitting results with the shortest circumference and the smallest area on behalf of the high filling effect for all sizes of rain cells.
