Hatching asynchrony in birds is considered an adaptation to facilitate brood reduction because under conditions of food scarcity, the smallest nestling usually dies soon after hatching, thereby minimizing parental effort. However, in species with extreme hatching asynchrony, the last hatchlings paradoxically experience a very low probability of survival and death can take so long that it can hardly be considered an adaptation. Here, we propose and experimentally tested a new adaptive hypothesis explaining the brood reduction paradox, namely the“Male Manipulation Hypothesis”. Our hypothesis suggests that by inducing asynchronous hatching,females increase the feeding requirements of the brood, which will induce males to increase provisioning effort. In addition, females may extend the period of male manipulation by feeding the smallest nestling just enough to sustain life. Our study showed that male common blackbirds(Turdus merula) increased their effort(i.e., number of food items per hour) in experimental asynchronous broods compared to synchronous broods, while females reduced their contribution, as predicted by the hypothesis.

Abnormal liver biochemical tests are present in up to30%of patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD),and therefore become a diagnostic challenge.Liver and biliary tract diseases are common extraintestinal manifestations for both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis(UC),and typically do not correlate with intestinal activity.Primary sclerosing cholangitis(PSC)is the most common hepatobiliary manifestation of IBD,and is more prevalent in UC.Approximately 5%of patients with UC develop PSC,with the prevalence reaching up to 90%.Cholangiocarcinoma and colon cancer risks are increased in these patients.Less common disorders include autoimmune hepatitis/PSC overlap syndrome,IgG4-associated cholangiopathy,primary biliary cirrhosis,hepatic amyloidosis,granulomatous hepatitis,cholelithiasis,portal vein thrombosis,liver abscess,and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.Hepatitis B reactivation during immunosuppressive therapy is a major concern,with screening and vaccination being recommended in serologically negative cases for patients with IBD.Reactivation prophylaxis with entecavir or tenofovir for 6to 12 mo after the end of immunosuppressive therapy is mandatory in patients showing as hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg)positive,independently from viral load.HBsAg negative and anti-HBc positive patients,with or without anti-HBs,should be closely monitored,measuring alanine aminotransferase and hepatitis B virus DNA within 12 mo after the end of therapy,and should be treated if the viral load increases.On the other hand,immunosuppressive therapy does not seem to promote reactivation of hepatitis C,and hepatitis C antiviral treatment does not influence IBD natural history either.Most of the drugs used for IBD treatment may induce hepatotoxicity,although the incidence of serious adverse events is low.Abnormalities in liver biochemical tests associated with aminosalicylates are uncommon and are usually not clinically relevant.Methotrexaterelated hepatotoxicity has been described in 14%of patients with IBD,in a dose-dependen

The demand for industrial enzymes is continually rising,fueled by the growing need to shift towards more sustainable industrial processes.However,making efficient enzyme production strains and identifying optimal enzyme expression conditions remains a challenge.Moreover,the production of the enzymes themselves comes with unavoidable impacts,e.g.,the need to utilize secondary feedstocks.Here,we take a more holistic view of bioprocess development and report an integrative approach that allows us to rapidly identify improved enzyme expression and secretion conditions and make use of cyanobacterial waste biomass as feed for supporting Pichia pastoris fermentation.We demonstrate these capabilities by producing a phytase secreted by P.pastoris that is grown on cyanobacterium hydrolysate and buffered glycerol-complex(BMGY)medium,with genetic expression conditions identified by high-throughput screening of a randomized se-cretion library.When our best-performing strain is grown in a fed-batch fermentation on BMGY,we reach over 7000 U/mL in three days.

Colorful visual signals are important systems for investigating the effects of signaling environments and receiver physiology on signal evolution as predicted by the sensory drive hypothesis. Support for the sensory drive hypothesis on color signal evolution is mostly based on documenting correlations between the properties of signals and habitat conditions under which the signals are given (i.e., a correlational approach) and less commonly on the use of mathematical models that integrate representations of visual environments, signal properties, and sensory systems (i.e., a functional approach). Here, we used an experimental approach in the field to evaluate signal efficacy of colorful lizard throat fans called dewlaps that show geographic variation in the lizard We used a remote controlled apparatus to display "fake dewlaps" to wild lizards to test for adaptive divergence in dewlap brightness (i.e., perceived intensity) among populations . We found evidence of local adaptation in dewlap brightness consistent with the sensory drive hypothesis. Specifically, dewlaps that had the brightness characteristics of local lizards were more likely to be detected than those with the brightness characteristics of non-local lizards. Our findings indicate that simplified mathematical representations of visual environments may allow robust estimates of relative detectability or conspicuousness in natural habitats. We have shown the feasibility of evaluating color signal efficacy experimentally under natural conditions and demonstrate the potential advantages of presenting isolated components of signals to an intended receiver to measure their contribution to signal function.

In numerical modelling,selection of the constitutive model is a critical factor in predicting the actual response of a geomaterial.The use of oversimplified or inadequate models may not be sufficient to reproduce the actual geomaterial behaviour.That selection is especially relevant in the case of aniso-tropic rocks,and particularly for shales and slates,whose behaviour may be affected,e.***.well stability in geothermal or oil and gas production operations.In this paper,an alternative anisotropic constitutive model has been implemented in the finite element method software CODe_BRIGHT,which is able to account for the anisotropy of shales and slates in terms of both deformability and strength.For this purpose,a transversely isotropic version of the generalised Hooke’s law is adopted to represent the stiffness anisotropy,while a nonuniform scaling of the stress tensor is introduced in the plastic model to represent the strength anisotropy.Furthermore,a detailed approach has been proposed to determine the model parameters based on the stressestrain results of laboratory tests.Moreover,numerical analyses are performed to model uniaxial and triaxial tests on Vaca Muerta shale,Bossier shale and slate from the northwest of Spain(NW Spain slate).The experimental data have been recovered from the literature in the case of the shale and,in the case of the slate,performed by the authors in terms of stress-strain curves and strengths.A good agreement can be generally observed between numerical and experi-mental results,hence showing the potential applicability of the approach to actual case studies.Therefore,the presented constitutive model may be a promising approach for analysing the anisotropic behaviour of rocks and its impact on well stability or other relevant geomechanical problems in aniso-tropic rocks.

A novel laboratory experimental design is described that will investigate the processing of dust grains in astrophysical shocks. Dust is a ubiquitous ingredient in the interstellar medium(ISM) of galaxies; however, its evolutionary cycle is still poorly understood. especially shrouded in mystery is the efficiency of grain destruction by astrophysical shocks generated by expanding supernova remnants. While the evolution of these remnants is fairly well understood, the grain destruction efficiency in these shocks is largely unknown. The experiments described herein will fill this knowledge gap by studying the dust destruction efficiencies for shock velocities in the range ～10–30 km/s(μm/ns), at which most of the grain destruction and processing in the ISM takes place. The experiments focus on the study of grain–grain collisions by accelerating small(～1 μm) dust particles into a large(～5–10 μm diameter) population; this simulates the astrophysical system well in that the more numerous, small grains impact and collide with the large population. Facilities that combine the versatility of high-power optical lasers with the diagnostic capabilities of X-ray free-electron lasers, e.g., the Matter in extreme Conditions instrument at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, provide an ideal laboratory environment to create and diagnose dust destruction by astrophysically relevant shocks at the micron scale.

In some countries with seismicity,an adequate detection network is essential to assess seismic hazards.The Instituto Geografico Nacional(National Geographic Institute/IGN)of Spain manages a strong motion network distributed throughout the whole country and an earthquake detection network composed of velocity stations.This paper aims at studying the development of the strong motion network of the Spanish National Seismic Network(focusing on mainland Spain and the Balearics)in the last three decades.A Geographic Information System(GIS)has been implemented to integrate the attributes from the IGN’s database concerning the earthquake catalogue,seismograph and accelerometer networks,which enabled to analyse the data and map the distribution of detection equipments in the region.The irregularly distributed Spanish strong motion network was greatly expanded from 1990 to 2010.In the past decade,it developed at a slower rate,but more modern technology was implemented.

大宗工业副产品或废弃物(如粒化高炉矿渣、粉煤灰等)作为辅助胶凝材料用于硅酸盐水泥及混凝土中已有不短的时间。利用辅助胶凝材料可有效缓解水泥生产所带来的制备能耗高、自然资源消耗大、二氧化碳排放等问题。在胶凝材料性能不大幅降低的前提下,要实现大比例取代(≥30%(质量分数))硅酸盐水泥,激发辅助胶凝材料的活性是关键。然而,从材料学观点出发,过往基于宏观性能的经验测试方法,对辅助胶凝材料活性的理解仍相当碎片化。除比表面积等物理性质外,多数辅助胶凝材料的水硬活性取决于其中玻璃相的溶解-沉淀反应。辅助胶凝材料中的玻璃体结构可简化为网络调整体(如Ca、Na等)和网络形成体(如Si、Al等)的物质的量比,如解聚度。近来对Ca OSi O2-Al2O3体系玻璃体的研究,进一步增强了对玻璃体聚合度的理解。玻璃体的溶解与聚合程度及溶液组成(如溶液的饱和程度、阴阳离子类型及浓度、p H等)密切相关。同时,沉淀的生成也会显著改变玻璃体的溶解动力学。本文归纳了辅助胶凝材料玻璃体结构与水硬活性的研究进展,分别对表征辅助胶凝材料玻璃体结构的解聚度及玻璃体中Si(Qn(m Al))聚合程度进行了介绍,分析了玻璃体结构在不同激发条件下的反应活性,以期为制备性能稳定和耐久性优良的低碳建筑材料提供参考。

Water buffalo(Bubalus bubalis)and domestic cattle(Bos taurus)are closely related species.However,embryo transfer interspecies has been attempted without any success.The failure in hybrid embryo-implantation is associated with the glycocode in the maternal-fetal interface.Glycosylation patterns have been studied in different species of ruminants;however,in B.bubalis,only the binucleated cells(BNC)have been analyzed.This glycocode is essential for a successful embryo-implantation and can be defined by Lectin-Histochemistry(LHC).The aim of this study is to compare the glycosylation pattern of placenta and uterus in water buffaloes and cattle by LHC.Tissue samples of placenta and uterus from pregnant Mediterranean female water buffaloes(Buf1)and Angus cows(Bov1)were analyzed.All animals were euthanized at 98 days of gestation.LHC was carried out using twelve lectins(Con A,LCA,PSA,sWGA,PHA-e,SBA,UeA-1,WGA,RCA-1,PNA,DBA,BSA-1).The intensity of lectin binding was semiquantitatively scored using a scale of 0(negative)to 3(strongly positive).Difference between species was found in trophoblast layer by PSA,SWGA,PNA and BSA-1,in BNC,and in the mononuclear cells by LCA,PSA,PHA-e,DBA,BSA-1,PNA.In utero,differences in the apical cellular membrane and the secretion of glands were identified by DBA and RCA-1,and in the cytoplasm of those glandular epithelial cells by PHA-e,BSA-1,WGA,and SBA.In both species,BNC presented a strong positive reaction with DBA and SBA,a moderate response by LCA,PHA-e,BSA-1 and PNA lectin,and a low reaction by PSA,UeA-1,SWGA,WGA,Con A and RCA-1.The results found in this study suggest that although both species are closely related,glycosylation patterns in the placenta and uterus are different,thus providing a possible reason for embryo transfer not being possible between these species.
