Here we studied whether soil systems differ if they are under the influence of live(plants)or dead organic matter systems(nest)in terms of C and N mineralization,microbiological characteristics and nematode trophic group structure.We analyzed physicochemical and microbiological properties of soils inside and outside nests of the european shag(Phalacrocorax aristotelis L.)on the Cies Islands(NW Spain).We sampled fresh soil below dead(nests)and live organic matter(plants)(paired samples,n=7).Soil of nests had lower organic matter and higher electric conductivity and dissolved organic C and extractable N contents than the soil of plants.Microbial biomass and activity were greater in soil of nests than in soil of plants.The abundance of nematode trophic groups(bacterivores,fungivores,omnivores and herbivores)differred between soils of nests and plants,and the soil of plants supported a more abundant and diverse nematode community.The present results points to that source of organic matter promote differences in the decomposer community,being more efficient in soil of nests because C mineralization is greater.Further,this occurred independently of the complexity of the systems,higher in the soil of plants with more groups of nematodes.

Soil conservation is necessary to achieve a sustainable world because soils play a crucial role in the earth's system.At the same time,the applicable and precise methods are vital to obtaining credible data in soil studies.A collection of 10 articles have been organized to focus on the new technologies regarding soil conservation and eco-sustainability and the results related to the novel approaches.The articles put effort into the innovative works of field investigations,field experiments,model experiments,and nu-merical simulations.Pivotal questions baffling soil scientists have been clarified and solved,and many valuable insights have been aroused.

Mesenchymal stromal cells are an excellent source of stem cells because they are isolated from adult tissues or perinatal derivatives, avoiding the ethical concerns that encumber embryonic stem cells. In preclinical models, it has been shown that mesenchymal stromal cells have neuroprotective and immunomodulatory properties, both of which are ideal for central nervous system treatment and repair. Here we will review the current literature on mesenchymal stromal cells, focusing on bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells, adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells and mesenchymal stromal cells from the umbilical cord stroma, i.e.,Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stromal cells. Finally, we will discuss the use of these cells to alleviate retinal ganglion cell degeneration following axonal trauma.

It is increasingly common to find alarming news related to tragic events occurring in schools around the world.Being able to deal with these situations without getting hurt is a task not suitable for everyone.In general,teachers are the ones who must deal with this type of situation in addition to other daily problems that appear in any classroom that make the level of stress to which they are subjected can become dangerous.This research aims to know the current situation of teachers in a region of southeastern Spain in terms of their level of work stress,resilience,and other associated variables,for which an ex post facto quantitative approach study was designed.For this purpose,an ad hoc sociodemographic questionnaire,and questions based on the Teaching and Learning International Survey of the Organization for economic Co-Operation and Development,the Maslach Burnout Inventory,and the Brief Resilient Coping Scale were applied.The participating sample consisted of 470 teachers.The main findings were that 6%of teachers had burnout(high emotional exhaustion,high cynicism,and low professional effectiveness simultaneously).Resilience correlated inversely with stress,emotional exhaustion,cynicism,excessive teaching,and difficulty maintaining classroom discipline.In conclusion,knowing the needs of teachers allows us to reflect on what kind of prevention and intervention programs are necessary to improve the well-being of teachers and thus improve the quality of education.

The removal of Cr,sulfates and Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD)from industrial tannery wastewater by chemical precipitation was carried out using Calcium oxide(CaO)and Calcium hydroxide(Ca(OH)2).Different doses of alkalis,ranging from deficiency to excess hydroxyl species over the stoichiometric necessary,were used to remove theoretically the 100%of Cr[0.3-3.2 g alkali·(g Cr^3+)^-1].The precipitation was carried out at room temperature,10 min of vigorous stirring,200 r·min^-1 and a settling time of 24 h,followed by separation and characterization of liquid product.As result of addition of alkalis,pH underwent increase as did the alkali concentration.The removal of Cr,and sulfates also increased as alkali concentration did,although for first species the changes at higher alkali contents were less evident.COD removal on the other hand,did not follow a unique trend,instead exhibited a maximum.Based on our results,selection of a specific dose of alkali was carried out taking as reference the efficiency on total chromium removal,keeping the pH in the range 7 to 9 to ensure Cr precipitation as chromium hydroxide.With those conditions,jar test was used to produce enough liquid product in order to determine the removal percent of several other species.The removal percent of the species was as follows:Cr,SO4^2-,ZnSO4,FeSO4,CN^-1,NiSO4,Fe2[Fe(CN)6]at 99.8%,66.9%,99.6%,21.4%,70.9%,52.8%and 76.4%with CaO,and 99.8%,61.6%,99.9%,7.1%,84.0%,54.4%and 90.5%with Ca(OH)2,respectively.

Conducting clinical research in community mental health settings: Opportunities and challenges

Tremendous progress has been made in the past decade surrounding the underlying mechanisms and treatment of neuropsychiatric disease. Technological advancements and a broadened research paradigm have contributed to the understanding of the neurochemistry, brain function and brain circuitry involved in neuropsychiatric disorders. The predominant area of unmet medical need in the United States is major psychiatric disorders, and major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability for ages 15-44. Total spending on research and development by the pharmaceutical industry has grown exponentially during the past decade, but fewer new molecular entities(NMe) for the treatment of major psychiatric disorders have received regulatory approvals compared to other therapeutic areas. Though significant expansion has occurred during the "decade of the brain", the translation of clinical trials outcomes into the community mental health setting is deficient. Randomized controlled trials(RCTs) have been the standard approach to clinical evaluation of the safety and efficacy of NMes for the past 60 years; however, there are significant barriers and skepticism in the implementation of evidence-based outcomes into clinical practice. Recruitment of patients, shortages of experiencedclinical researchers, regulatory requirements and later translation of outcomes into clinical practice are ever growing problems faced by investigators. The community mental health setting presents particular barriers in the replication of therapeutic outcomes from RCTs. The diagnostic complexity of major psychiatric diseases and the highly selective patient populations involved in clinical trials lend to the gap in translation from the "bench to the bedside". The community mental health setting lends to a diverse patient population with numerous co-morbidities and environmental factors that are unaccounted in the average RCT. While we acknowledge the enormous complexity in developing novel and innovative treatments for major psychiatric disorders,

Optimization procedures are required to minimize the amount of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions from marine engines.This study discusses the procedures to optimize the performance of any marine engine implemented in a 0D/1D numerical model in order to achieve lower values of exhaust emissions.From that point,an extension of previous simulation researches is presented to calculate the amount of SOx emissions from two marine diesel engines along their load diagrams based on the percentage of sulfur in the marine fuel used.The variations of SOx emissions are computed in g/k W·h and in parts per million(ppm)as functions of the optimized parameters:brake specific fuel consumption and the amount of air-fuel ratio respectively.Then,a surrogate model-based response surface methodology is used to generate polynomial equations to estimate the amount of SOx emissions as functions of engine speed and load.These developed non-dimensional equations can be further used directly to assess the value of SOx emissions for different percentages of sulfur of the selected or similar engines to be used in different marine applications.

Most redox-regulated chloroplast enzymes are reduced during the day and oxidized during the night.While the reduction mechanism of light-dependent enzymes is well known,the mechanism mediating their oxidation in the dark remains unknown.The thiol-dependent peroxidases,2-Cys peroxiredoxins (Prxs),play a key role in light-dependent reduction of chloroplast enzymes.Prxs transfer reducing equivalents of thiols to hydrogen peroxide,suggesting the participation of these peroxidases in enzyme oxidation in the dark.Here,we have addressed this issue by analyzing the redox state of well-known redox-regulated chloroplast enzymes in response to darkness in Arabidopsis thaliana mutants deficient in chloroplastlocalized Prxs (2-Cys Prxs A and B,Prx Ⅱe,and Prx Q).Mutant plants lacking 2-Cys Prxs A and B,and plants overexpressing NADPH-dependent thioredoxin (Trx) reductase C showed delayed oxidation of chloroplast enzymes in the dark.In contrast,the deficiencies of Prx Ⅱe or Prx Q exerted no effect.In vitro assays allowed the reconstitution of the pathway of reducing equivalents from reduced fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase to hydrogen peroxide mediated by Trxs and 2-Cys Prxs.Taken together,these results suggest that 2-Cys Prxs participate in the short-term oxidation of chloroplast enzymes in the dark.

This paper proposes a novel approach for the provision of non-frequency ancillary service(AS)by consumers connected to low-voltage distribution networks.The proposed approach considers an asymmetric pool-based local market for AS negotiation,allowing consumers to set a flexibility quantity and desired price to trade.A case study with 98 consumers illustrates the proposed market-based non-frequency AS provision approach.Also,three different strategies of consumers’participation are implemented and tested in a real low-voltage distribution network with radial topology.It is shown that consumers can make a profit from the sale of their flexibility while contributing to keeping the network power losses,voltage,and current within pre-defined limits.Ultimately,the results demonstrate the value of AS coming directly from end-users.
