Multitemporal landslide inventory analysis of an intertropical mountain in west-central Mexico——Basis for hazard management

Landslides in intertropical mountainous areas of Mexico are a natural hazard that could potentially generate a disaster. Despite this, many areas lack landslide inventories, making it difficult to monitor and efficiently manage the associated risks for local populations. For this reason, the aim of this research was to undertake a multitemporal landslide inventory and analyze its conditioning factors in the Pico de Tancítaro stratovolcano, which, in recent decades, has presented several high-risk geomorphological events with disastrous consequences for nearby localities. The spatial distribution of landslides and its conditioning factors were mapped at a 1:50,000 scale for the 1995-2020 period, through visual interpretation of orthophotos and satellite images(Landsat, SPOT, and SeNTINeL). The conditioning factors that link the most to landslides were Quaternary andesite and basaltic andesite rocks;volcanic cones, mountain river valleys, and very steep to steep slopes(30° to >45°), oriented to the South, North, and east;Andosols and Leptosols;and the oyamel fir and mixed forests. 505 landslide events classified into slides and flows that occurred in 1995, 2004, 2010, and 2015 were identified. New scars generated by the reactivation of landslide processes were also observed. The landslides in the study area were triggered by torrential rains caused by hurricanes and tropical storms;such as hurricanes Alex and Patricia. The inventory and analysis of conditioning factors highlighted the distribution and dynamics of slides and flows in the study area. In addition, the most important factors for studies of landslide susceptibility, hazards, and risks in the Pico de Tancítaro stratovolcano were identified, contributing to the management of geomorphological risks in intertropical mountain areas.

Characterizing the diversity and structure of host–parasite communities is crucial to understandingtheir eco-evolutionary dynamics.Malaria and related haemosporidian parasites are responsible forfitness loss and mortality in bird species worldwide.However,despite exhibiting the greatest ornithologicalbiodiversity,avian haemosporidians from Neotropical regions are quite unexplored.Here,we analyze the genetic diversity of bird haemosporidian parasites(Plasmodium andHaemoproteus)in 1,336 individuals belonging to 206 bird species to explore for differences in diversityof parasite lineages and bird species across 5 well-differentiated Peruvian ecoregions.Wedetected 70 different haemosporidian lineages infecting 74 bird species.We showed that 25 out ofthe 70 haplotypes had not been previously recorded.Moreover,we also identified 81 new host–parasite interactions representing new host records for these haemosporidian parasites.Our outcomesrevealed that the effective diversity(as well as the richness,abundance,and Shannon–Weaver index)for both birds and parasite lineages was higher in Amazon basin ecoregions.Furthermore,we also showed that ecoregions with greater diversity of bird species also had highparasite richness,hence suggesting that host community is crucial in explaining parasite richness.Generalist parasites were found in ecoregions with lower bird diversity,implying that the abundanceand richness of hosts may shape the exploitation strategy followed by haemosporidian parasites.These outcomes reveal that Neotropical region is a major reservoir of unidentified haemosporidianlineages.Further studies analyzing host distribution and specificity of these parasites inthe tropics will provide important knowledge about phylogenetic relationships,phylogeography,and patterns of evolution and distribution of haemosporidian parasites.

The complex Maxwell stress tensor theorem:The imaginary stress tensor and the reactive strength of orbital momentum.A novel scenery underlying electromagnetic optical forces

We uncover the existence of a universal phenomenon concerning the electromagnetic optical force exerted by light or other electromagnetic waves on a distribution of charges and currents in general,and of particles in particular.This conveys the appearence of underlying reactive quantities that hinder radiation pressure and currently observed timeaveraged forces.This constitutes a novel paradigm of the mechanical effciency of light on matter,and completes the landscape of the optical,and generally electromagnetic,force in photonics and classical electrodynamics;widening our understanding in the design of both llumination and particles in optical manipulation without the need of increasing the illuminating power,and thus lowering dissipation and heating.We show that this may be accomplished through the minimization of what we establish as the reactive strength of orbital(or canonical)momentum,which plays against the optical force a role analogous to that of the reactive power versus the radiation effciency of an antenna.This long time overlooked quantity,important for current progress of optical manipulation,and that stems from the complex Maxwell theorem of conservation of complex momentum that we put forward,as well as its alternating flow associated to the imaginary part of the complex Maxwell stress tensor,conform the imaginary Lorentz force that we introduce in this work,and that like the reactive strength of orbital momentum,is antagonistic to the well-known time-averaged force;thus making this reactive Lorentz force indirectly observable near wavelengths at which the time-averaged force is lowered.The Minkowski and Abraham momenta are also addressed.

An earthquake called the MW7.2“el Mayor Cucapah”earthquake on April 4,2010 has been analyzed for seismic precursor.The changes in the lineament system concerning its pattern and time intervals were analyzed during the earthquake preparation period and occurrence using the automated lineament detection method.The Landsat 5 TM images were processed using LeSSA and ADALGeO software obtaining similar results.The statistical analysis revealed the stress accumulation due to plate interaction during earthquake formation.The study shows that the number of extracted lineaments changes rapidly about 23 months before the earthquake,and the systems return to the initial stage after 23 months.Most lineaments coincide with the extension of the San Andreas Fault as NW direction is the dominant trend.Thus,it can be concluded that the featural changes within the Rose diagram corresponding to the different strokes direction along with oriented elongation lines as disclosed in the present study using satellite images could be identified as a mid-term and/or short-term precursors of the earthquake.However,even though the dynamism of the el Mayor Cucapah earthquake is found in the extracted lineaments,it is possible to isolate more significant earthquakes even if new ones appear near the zone.Moreover,using two algorithms for lineament detection allows for the tectonics to corroborate the obtained lineaments and dynamism.

Quality assessment of Continuous Operating Reference Stations(CORS)-GPS stations in Mexico

The present analysis provided the quality assessment of 65 Continuous Operating Reference Stations(CORS) situated in and around Mexico using the data of about ten years(January 2010 to January 2020).To accomplish the assessment,we considered 4 quality indexes for performing the quality check,incluing the multipath effect on L1 and L2 bands,signal-to-noise ratio in both bands,cycle slips,and integrity.Meanwhile,a new reference parameter named regio nal values for Mexico(RVM) was calculated for the stations situated in Mexico.Additionally,an exhaustive analysis of the quality indicators in the worst and best cases was performed.The signal degradation was proved by a long-term time series and cru stal defo rmation analysis in GAMIT/GLOBK platform.The results showed a stro ng correlation between integrity,cycle slips and daily observations time,and the multipath effect is strong in the case of outdated systems.The study indicates that the estimated quality indexes and values could be the basis for establishing new CORS in Mexico,and the errors corrections which cannot be mitigated in the postprocessing stage would greatly help utilize the data for different scientific applications.The results were supported by deformation analysis in part of Baja California Peninsula in Mexico indicating northern and eastern velocity vector of -3.08±0.02 mm/yr,-7.85±0.02 mm/yr and-0.07±0.03 mm/yr,-9.33±0.02 mm/yr respectively at MPR1 and INeG stations.

Nuclear accidents have led to the release to the environment of radioactive isotopes,mainly radioactive cesium(Cs^(+)),contaminating large areas of soil for very long periods of time(Burger and Lichtscheidl,2018).These contaminated soils contain^(134)Cs^(+)and^(137)Cs^(+)radioisotopes that are readily accumulated into plants and that,through the food chain,are transferred to animals and humans,causing important health problems(Burger and Lichtscheidl,2018).

Basal cisternostomy for traumatic brain injury: A case report of unexpected good recovery

In subarachnoid hemorrhage following traumatic brain injury (TBI), the high intracisternal pressure drives the cerebrospinal fluid into the brain parenchyma, causing cerebral edema. Basal cisternostomy involves opening the basal cisterns to atmospheric pressure and draining cerebrospinal fluid in an attempt to reverse the edema. We describe a case of basal cisternostomy combined with decompressive craniectomy. A 35-year-old man with severe TBI following a road vehicle accident presented with acute subdural hematoma, Glasgow coma scale score of 6, fixed pupils and no corneal response. Opening of the basal cisterns and placement of a temporary cisternal drain led to immediate relaxation of the brain. The patient had a Glasgow coma scale score of 15 on postoperative day 6 and was discharged on day 10. We think basal cisternostomy is a feasible and effective procedure that should be considered in the management of TBI.

A Computational Comparison of ether and ester electrolyte Stability on a Ca Metal Anode

Ca-ion batteries(CIBs)have the potential to provide inexpensive energy storage,but their realization is impeded by the lack of suitable electrolytes.Motivated by recent experimental progress,we perform ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to investigate early decomposition reactions at the anode-electrolyte interface.By examining different combinations of solvent—tetrahydrofuran(THF)or ethylene carbonate(eC)—and salt—Ca(BH_(4))_(2),Ca(BF_(4))_(2),Ca(BCl_(4))_(2),and Ca(ClO_(4))_(2)—we identify a variety of behavioral trends between electrolyte solutions.Next,we perform a separate trajectory with pure THF and gradually increased negative charge;despite an addition of-32e,no THF decomposition is detected.Charge analysis reveals that in a reductive environment,THF distributes excess charge evenly across its hydrocarbon backbone,while eC concentrates charge on its ester oxygens and carbonyl carbon,resulting in decomposition.Graphs of charge vs.time for both solvents reveal that eC decomposition products can be reduced by up to five electrons,while those of THF are limited to a single electron.Ultimately,we find Ca(BH4)2 and THF to be the most stable solution investigated herein,corroborating experimental evidence of its suitability as a CIB electrolyte.

Hummingbird-plant interactions in Chile:An ecological review of the available evidence

Hummingbird species have closely evolved with the plants they feed on,which is confirmed by their often tight ecological relationships in natural settings.Hummingbird-plant interactions are of interest for research areas such as ecology,evolution,and even agriculture,as they usually inform on the conservation status of interacting species assemblages,and its disappearance may precede the population extinction of the species involved in the interaction.In Chile,there are nine hummingbird species,which interact with a large and diverse number of angiosperm species in forest,desert,and mountain range environments.The motivation to perform this review is to systematize the available information regarding the flowering plants visited by hummingbird species in Chile,to present some basic plant-hummingbird pollination network metrics,and on this basis to identify the components of the plant-hummingbird relationships in need of further research.A plant-hummingbird metanetwork revealed a low connectance value,low niche overlap,and strong modularity among species.However,the fact that most species present a strong allopatric distribution across Chile,suggests that network structure results mostly from the history of colonization rather than from ecological organization.Nowadays,the main threats to Chilean hummingbirds are anthropogenic disturbance and climate change,which disrupt hummingbird-plant interactions,leading to unpredictable ecological consequences at the community level.Long periods of drought may reduce the resource base for hummingbirds,with dramatic consequences for the maintenance of bird and plant populations.

We depict recent developments in the field of positive sectional curvature, mainly, but not exclusively, under the assumption of isometric torus actions. After an elaborate introduction to the field, we shall discuss various classification results, before we provide results on the computation of euler characteristics. This will be the starting point for an examination of more involved invariants and further techniques. In particular, we shall discuss the Hopf conjectures, related decomposition results like the Wilhelm conjecture, results in differential topology and index theory as well as in rational homotopy theory, geometrically formal metrics in positive curvature and much more. The results we present will be discussed for arbitrary dimensions, but also specified to small dimensions. This survey article features mainly depictions of our own work interest in this area and cites results obtained in different collaborations; full statements and proofs can be found in the respective original research articles.
