Acrylicacid was grafted onto chitosan by using the ceric ammonium nitrate as the initiator. The effect of initiator concentration, monomer concentration, time & temperature on % G and % GE were studied. The grafted samples were characterized using FTIR, TGA, SEM and XRD methods. From the FTIR data it was ascertained that grafting has occurred considerably. The morphology of the grafted polymer was observed from the SEM picture. The thermal analysis indicated the different stages of degradation of the grafted copolymer. Evidence of grafting was obtained from comparison of SEM, XRD, and FTIR of the grafted and nongrafted chitosan as well as solubility characteristics of the products. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of the grafted polymer have also been investigated.

Objective:To study the effect of L-ascorbic acid supplementation on the in vitro development of buffalo embryos and evaluate the relative mRNA abundance of some pro-apoptotic,anti-apoptotic,and embryonic development-related ***:In experiment 1,we evaluated the effect of the addition of 0(control),50,and 100μM L-ascorbic acid to the in vitro maturation medium on the developmental competence in terms of blastocyst rate and relative mRNA abundance of some pro-apoptotic(BAX,BID),anti-apoptotic(BCL-XL,MCL1),and embryonic development(GDF9,BMP15)related *** on the results,we chose 50μM as the suitable dose of L-ascorbic acid for the subsequent *** further evaluated the blastocyst rates following the addition of 50μM L-ascorbic acid to the in vitro culture medium(experiment 2),and in vitro maturation and in vitro culture media(experiment 3).In all three experiments,the maturation and culture media devoid of L-ascorbic acid served as the control ***:The blastocyst rate after adding 50μM L-ascorbic acid to the in vitro maturation medium was significantly higher than the control group(P<0.05),whereas 100μM L-ascorbic acid exhibited a negative effect on the blastocyst *** blastocyst rates for embryos cultured in 50μM L-ascorbic acid in the in vitro culture medium alone and both in vitro maturation and in vitro culture media were significantly higher than their corresponding control groups(P<0.05).The relative mRNA abundance of BAX significantly decreased in blastocysts produced after the addition of 50μM L-ascorbic acid as compared with the control group(P<0.05),whereas,for MCL1,it significantly decreased in blastocysts produced after the addition of 100μM L-ascorbic acid(P<0.05).Conclusions:The supplementation of 50μM L-ascorbic acid to in vitro maturation and in vitro culture media supports in vitro embryonic development in buffaloes by improving developmental competence and altering the expression of apoptosis-related genes.

目的　探讨生长抑素受体 2 (SSTR2 )基因转染抑制体内胰腺肿瘤生长的效果及其机制。方法　利用lipofectAMINE将人类SSTR2全长cDNA转染导入胰腺癌细胞株PC 3中 ,G4 18筛选出阳性克隆 ;免疫组织化学SABC法和RT PCR检测生长抑素受体 2的稳定表达。分别将表达生长抑素受体2的PC 3细胞 (实验组 )和空载体对照组及阴性对照组的PC 3细胞异种移植到无胸腺小鼠体内。TUNEL法测定这些细胞形成的胰腺肿瘤细胞凋亡指数 (AI) ;免疫组织化学SP法测定凋亡相关基因Bcl 2和Bax的表达 ,以及肿瘤微血管密度 (MVD)。另外 ,比较 3组裸鼠之间胰腺肿瘤的大小和重量。结果　实验组胰腺肿瘤细胞AI(3 39%± 0 84 % )显著高于空载体对照组 (0 6 9%± 0 0 8% )和阴性对照组 (0 6 8%± 0 0 9% ) (P 0 0 5 )。结论　大多数人胰腺癌细胞中缺失SSTR2基因 ,生长抑?

In urban and peri-urban areas of developing countries decentralized wastewater treatment using septic tanks as pretreatment is common. One challenge of decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DEWATS) is handling and utilization of the generated sludge. Sludge drying reed beds (SDRBs) are a robust method for dewatering and stabilization of sludge. Constructed wetlands (CWs) and SDRBs can be integrated to treat both wastewater and sludge. SDRBs require more area than most other sludge treatment options, but have low operational cost and energy requirements. The land area required for SDRB’s can be optimized by the selection of an appropriate loading rate, sludge application frequency and resting phase. This paper gives a review regarding the use of SDRB’s as well as presenting a pilot scale experiment comparing planted and unplanted sludge drying beds in Kathmandu. The planted beds showed a higher dewatering capability and higher reduction of volatile solids (VS). A short-term pilot-scale experiment can give valuable input to the design and operation of full-scale systems and for sub-tropical climate as that of Kathmandu Nepal, an initial sludge loading rate (SLR) of 100 kg total solids (TS)/m2/year is suggested with a gradual increase to up to 250 kg TS/m2/year.

Despite several national programs to reduce infant mortality, India had repeatedly failed to achieve its set targets for infant mortality. There are approximately one million neonatal deaths in India each year which accounts for nearly two-thirds of the infant deaths in India. India’s current trajectories of neonatal and infant mortality rates make it unlikely that it will achieve its targets for infant mortality rate for 2015 set under the Millennium Development Goals. Since two-thirds of infant deaths in India are neonatal deaths, implementation of effective neonatal care strategies would be essential to reduce infant mortality considerably. The history of child health services in India suggests an inattention to qualitative parameters, hindering a reversal of its failures. We discuss a format of mixed-methods participatory research, integrated with routine district level household surveys (DLHS), as a model of health services research which would better delineate the problems encountered in delivering effective newborn care at the primary care level.

Outbreak Investigation of Cholera in a Slum of Northern India

Cholera is one of the oldest and best understood endemic diseases. An actual bacterial enteric disease, it is characterized in its severe form by sudden onset, profuse painless watery stools (rice-water stool), nausea and profuse vomiting early in the course of illness. Endemic and pandemics are strongly linked to the consumption of unsafe water, poor hygiene, poor sanitation and crowded living conditions. A rapid survey was conducted for the outbreak investigation on August 4, 2008. The objectives were to investigate the outbreak, risk factors for cholera and recommend control measures immediately. Questionnaire based random convenient sample based investigative study. 60 families were contacted by the public health students. Approximate 300 individuals were screened for cholera cases. Simultaneously six water samples were also collected from the contacted family. Microbiological test for Vibrio cholera and E. coli was conducted. Randomly six water samples were collected from the Rajive colony. Microbiological test for Vibrio cholera and E. coli was conducted from the department of Microbiology, PU. Vibrio cholera and E. coli were found absent, in all the samples. One sample was found positive for unidentified bacteria.

Induction motor is the most sought after motor in the industry for excellent performance characteristics and robustness. Developments in the Power Electronic circuitry have revolutionised the induction motor industry leading to the developments in various control strategies and circuits for motor control. Direct Torque Control (DTC) is one of the excellent control strategies preferred by industries for controlling the torque and flux in an induction machine. The main drawback of DTC is the presence of torque ripple which is slightly more than the acceptable limit. There are various parameters that introduce ripples in the electromagnetic torque, one of them being the type of inverter circuit. There are various types of inverter circuits available and the effect of each of them in the production of torque ripple is different. This work is an attempt to identify the influence of various multilevel inverter circuits on the torque ripple level and to propose the best inverter circuit. The influence of multilevel diode clamped inverter and cascaded H bridge inverter circuits on torque ripple minimization, is analysed using simulation studies for identifying the most suitable multilevel inverter circuit which gives minimum torque ripple. The results obtained from the simulation studies are validated by hardware implementation on 0.75 kW induction motor.

With the advancement in the technologies around the world over the past few years, the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have gained much attention in harvesting the energy for wireless, self-powered and MEMS devices. In the present era, many devices are available for energy harnessing such as electromagnetic, electrostatic and piezoelectric generator and these devices are designed based on its ability to capture the different form of environment energy such as solar energy, wind energy, thermal energy and convert it into the useful energy form. Out of these devices, the use of a piezoelectric generator for energy harvesting is very attractive for MEMS applications. There are various sources of harvestable energy including waste heat, solar energy, wind energy, energy in floating water and mechanical vibrations which are used by the researchers for energy harvesting purposes. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art in harvesting mechanical vibrations as an energy source by various generators (such as electromagnetic, electrostatic and piezoelectric generators). Also, the design and characteristics of piezoelectric generators, using vibrations of cantilevered bimorphs, for MEMS have also been reviewed here. Electromagnetic, electrostatic and piezoelectric generators presented in the literature are reviewed by taking into an account the power output, frequency, acceleration, dimension and application of each generator and the coupling factor of each transduction mechanism has also been discussed for all the devices.
