As an important component of microzooplankton,ciliates play a key role in matter cycling and energy fow in marine planktonic *** of planktonic ciliate have been extensive in the South China Sea(SCS)over the last 20 ***,we summarize the recent progress on the diversity and distribution of this group in the *** includes that in:(1)the waters covering the intertidal zone of the northern SCS,most studies have focused on taxonomy,with 71 species collected,identifed,and described(with~40%new species);(2)neritic waters distribution patterns have been examined at a regional scale,with ciliates displaying signifcant spatial variations and seasonal dynamics;(3)in oceanic waters,there has been a focus on ciliate distribution in north,centre,and south regions,where mesoscale physical processes play roles in controlling distributions,and noticeable vertical variations *** generally,some studies examine the infuences of environment variables on ciliates,and indicate that chlorophyll a concentration is commonly positively correlated with ciliates *** addition,some signifcant fndings are summarized,the limitations of past studies are considered,and recommendations are made for future work on planktonic ciliates in SCS.

Ciliates of the heterotrich family Folliculinidae are widespread in various habitats and are distinguished by their transparent loricae of various shapes,conspicuous peristomial lobes,and dimorphic life *** usually attach firmly to the surface of substrates,feed on bacteria and microalgae,and play a significant role in energy flow and material cycling in the microbial food ***,little is known regarding their biodiversity and *** this work,we establish the terminology of the family Folliculinidae and select six crucial features for genus *** on previous studies,we revise the classification of Folliculinidae,supply improved diagnoses for each of the 33 folliculinid genera,and provide a key to their ***,phylogenetic analyses based on small subunit ribosomal DNA(SSU rDNA)sequences revealed that the family is monophyletic and comprises two subclades(subclades I II)which can be identified by the flexibility of their peristomial lobes and the sculpturing of their ***,we investigate the evolutionary relationships of folliculinids using the six chosen generic features.

Reconsideration of the phylogenetic positions of three stichotrichous genera Holosticha,Anteholosticha and Pseudokeronopsis (Spirotrichea:Ciliophora) inferred from complete SSU rRNA gene sequences

The small subunit rRNA (SSU rRNA) gene for six marine stichotrichs, Pseudokeronopsis carnea, P. flava, Holosticha heterofoissneri, H. diademata, H. bradburyae and Anteholosticha manca, was sequenced and characterized. Using this molecular information, the phylogenetic positions of three related genera, Pseudokeronopsis, Holosticha and Anteholosticha were determined. The results indicate that the family Urostylidae is clearly separated from the family Pseudokeronopsidae. The present phylogenetic analyses unambiguously placed Pseudokeronopsis close to Holosticha, and support the conclusion that these genera should be regarded as the members of the order Urostylidae within the stichotrich clade. Furthermore, the results of this study also support the monophyly of the genus Pseud-okeronopsis, the redefinition of Holosticha s. str. and the placement of Anteholosticha in a clade separate from Holosticha.

The ciliate genus Protocruzia belongs to one of the most ambiguous taxa considering its systematic position,possibly as a member of the classes Heterotrichea,Spirotrichea or Karyorelictea,which is tentatively placed into Spirotrichea in Lynn’s 2008 *** test these hypotheses,multigene trees(Bayesian inference,evolutionary distance,maximum parsimony,and maximum likelihood) were constructed using the small subunit rRNA(SSU rRNA) gene,internal transcribed spacer 2(ITS2) and a protein coding gene(histone H4).All analyses agree that:(1) four morphotypes of Protocruzia from different geographical origins group together and form a monophyletic clade,which cannot be assigned to any of the eleven described ciliate classes;(2) it is invariably positioned on an isolated branch separated from the class Spirotrichea suggesting that this clade should be clearly removed from Spirotrichea;(3) this leads us to hypothesize that this taxon may indeed represent a lineage on a class *** on the fact that it is,both morphologically and in molecular features,closely related to the heterotrichs,Colpodea and Oligohymenophorea,Protocruziida might be an ancestral form for the subphylum Intramacronucleata in the evolutionary line from the class Heterotrichea(subphylum Postciliodesmatophora) to higher taxa.

To critically appraise short-term outcomes in patients treated in a new Pelvic Exenteration (PE) Unit. METHODSThis retrospective observational study was conducted by analysing prospectively collected data for the first 25 patients (16 males, 9 females) who underwent PE for advanced pelvic tumours in our PE Unit between January 2012 and October 2016. Data evaluated included age, co-morbidities, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) status, preoperative adjuvant treatment, intra-operative blood loss, procedural duration, perioperative adverse event, lengths of intensive care unit (ICU) stay and hospital stay, and oncological outcome. Quantitative data were summarized as percentage or median and range, and statistically assessed by the χ2 test or Fisher’s exact test, as applicable. RESULTSAll 25 patients received comprehensive preoperative assessment via our dedicated multidisciplinary team approach. Long-course neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy was provided, if indicated. The median age of the patients was 61.9-year-old. The median ASA and ECOG scores were 2 and 0, respectively. The indications for PE were locally invasive rectal adenocarcinoma (n = 13), advanced colonic adenocarcinoma (n = 5), recurrent cervical carcinoma (n = 3) and malignant sacral chordoma (n = 3). The procedures comprised 10 total PEs, 4 anterior PEs, 7 posterior PEs and 4 isolated lateral PEs. The median follow-up period was 17.6 mo. The median operative time was 11.5 h. The median volume of blood loss was 3306 mL, and the median volume of red cell transfusion was 1475 mL. The median lengths of ICU stay and of hospital stay were 1 d and 21 d, respectively. There was no case of mortality related to surgery. There were a total of 20 surgical morbidities, which occurred in 12 patients. The majority of the complications were grade 2 Clavien-Dindo. Quantitative Assessment of Air Trapping Using Inspiratory and Expiratory Low-Dose Computed Tomography

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of radiation dose reduction on the quantification of air trapping on expiratory CT. Materials and methods: This study was conducted as a retrospective evaluation of inspiratory and expiratory CT studies performed in routine clinical practice before and after alteration of the scanning protocol for expiratory CT at our institute. Eighty-six patients who had a clinical diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and underwent inspiratory and expiratory CT and pulmonary function testing (PFT) were included. For the quantitative analysis, CT scans were obtained at six evenly spaced levels from the lung apices to the bases. The area of segmented lung without emphysema between -500 to -950 HU was obtained from the summation of six slices. The relative area between -900 and -950 HU for the area of the segmented lung (RA900-950) was calculated on both the inspiratory and expiratory scans. Comparisons of the RA-change between the standard-dose group (200 mA) and the low-dose group (80 mA) were performed by mann-Whitney U test. Results: There was no significant difference between the standard-dose group and the low-dose group in the mean RA-change, and RA-change in both the standard-dose and low-dose groups correlated significantly with the results of PFT. In addition, there were no prominent differences in the correlation coefficients between the two groups. Conclusions: Low-dose CT could evaluate air trapping objectively and was not inferior to standard-dose CT for this purpose.
