Conservation agriculture(CA)-based best-bet crop management practices may increase crop and water productivity, while conserving and sustaining natural resources. We evaluated the performance of rainy season maize during 2014 under an ongoing long-term trial(established in 2008) with three tillage practices, i.e., permanent bed(PB), zero tillage(ZT), and conventional tillage(CT) as main plots, and four intensified maize-based cropping systems, i.e., maize-wheat-mungbean, maize-chickpea-Sesbania(MCS), maizemustard-mungbean, and maize-maize-Sesbania) as subplot treatments. In the seventh rainy season of the experiment, maize growth parameters, yield attributes, yield, and water-and energy-use efficiency were highest at fixed plots under ZT. Maize growth parameters were significantly(P ld attributes, including cobs per m^2(7.8), cob length(0.183 m), grain rows per cob(13.8), and grains per row(35.6), were significantly higher under ZT than CT; however, no significant effect of cropping systems was found on maize growth and yield attributes. Zero tillage exhibited the highest maize productivity(4 589 kg ha^(-1)). However, among the cropping systems, MCS exhibited the highest maize productivity(4 582 kg ha^(-1)). In maize, water use was reduced by 80.2–120.9 mm ha-1under ZT and PB compared with CT, which ultimately enhanced the economic water-use efficiency by 42.0% and 36.6%, respectively. The ZT and PB showed a 3.5%–31.8% increase in soil organic carbon(SOC) at different soil depths(0–0.45 m), and a 32.3%–39.9% increase in energy productivity compared with CT. Overall, our results showed that CA-based ZT and PB practices coupled with diversified maize-based cropping systems effectively enhanced maize yield and SOC,as well as water-and energy-use efficiency, in northwestern India.

Synthesized iron oxyhydroxide was applied for the adsorptive removal of As(V)and As(III)from the aquas ***,this investigation highlighted the synergistic effect of calcium carbonate in conjunction with iron oxyhydroxide,resulting in enhanced removal *** experiment was conducted under various conditions:concentration,dosage,pH,agitation,and *** characterizations such as Brunauer Emmett Teller,X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were implied to understand adsorption *** langmuir model revealed optimal concentrations for As(V)=500μg/l at pH-5 and As(III)=200μg/l at pH-7,resulting in 95%and 93%adsorption efficiencies,*** adsorption capacities“qm”were found to be 1266.943μg/g for As(V)and 1080.241μg/g for As(III).Freundlich model demonstrated favorable adsorption by indicating“n>1”such as As(V)=2.542 and As(III)=2.707;similarly,the speciation factor“Rll as best fitted,indicating throughout chemisorption processes for removing As(V)and As(III).Furthermore,incorporating calcium carbonate presented a significant leap in the removal efficiency,indicating As(V)from 95%to 98%and As(III)from 93%to 96%,*** findings offer profound motivation for developing effective and sustainable solutions to tackle arsenic contamination,underscoring the exceptional promise of iron oxyhydroxide in conjunction with calcium carbonate to achieve maximum removal efficiency.

Climate change adaptation, greenhouse gas mitigation and economic profitability of conservation agriculture: Some examples from cereal systems of Indo-Gangetic Plains

Achieving sustainability of the cereal system in the Indo-Gangetic Plains（IGP）of India under progressive climate change and variability necessitates adoption of practices and technologies that increase food production,adaptation and mitigation in a sustainable *** paper examines conservation agriculture（CA）from the perspective of：（i）increased yield and farm income,（ii）adaptation to heat and water stresses,and（iii）reduction in greenhouse gas（GHGs）*** analyses and conclusions are based on the literature and evidences from a large number of on-station as well as farmers’field trials on CA in the cereal systems of *** analyses show that CA-based system substantially reduces the production cost（up to 23%）but produces equal or even higher than conventional system;thereby increasing economic profitability of production ***-based production systems also moderated the effect of high temperature（reduced canopy temperature by 1–4°C）and increased irrigation water productivity by 66–100%compared to traditional production systems thus well adapting to water and heat stress situations of *** continuous monitoring of soil flux of CO2,N2O and CH4 revealed that CA-based rice-wheat systems emit 10–15%less GHGs than conventional *** is the first time that CA and its components are synthesized and analyzed from food security-climate change *** this holistic analysis,we suggest that wide-scale promotion of suitable CA practices by integrating into national agriculture development strategy is a way forward to address food security,climate change adaptation and mitigation challenges faced by present agriculture.

Predicting Yield and Stability Analysis of Wheat under Different Crop Management Systems across Agro-Ecosystems in India

The objectives of the study were as follows: 1) to evaluate the GxExM for wheat genotypes;2) to predict yield performance and identify high stable wheat genotypes in different management practices;and 3) to make genotype-specific management and high performing genotype recommendations within and across agro-ecological regions. A diverse set of twenty-one genotypes was evaluated over three years (2012, 2013 and 2014) under two levels of crop management practices (CT and ZT) across three agro-ecological regions (BR, MP and PB) of India in replicated trials. Data were analyzed with SASGxE and RGxE programs using SAS and R programming languages, respectively. Across and within a location(s), the pattern of GxExM and GxMxY interactions (respectively) among univariate and multivariate stability statistics, grouping of genotypes in divisive clusters and estimates (with a prediction interval) of genotype varied in management practice CT and ZT. Across locations, the genotypes “Munal” and “HD-2967” were the best performers and high stable in CT and ZT, respectively. Genotypes “HD-2824” and “DPW-621-50”, and “Munal” may serve as diverse parents for developing high quality, climate smart, locally adapted genotypes for BR in CT and ZT, respectively. Genotypes “HD-2932”, “BAZ” and “JW-3288”, and “GW-322” and “HD-2967” are suitable for developing locally adapted stress tolerant genotypes for MP in management practices CT and ZT, respectively. Relatively small GxM and GxExM interactions in PB preclude in making definitive conclusions.

Changes in soil biochemical indicators at different wheat growth stages under conservation-based sustainable intensification of rice-wheat system

Soil microbes play critical roles in soil biogeochemistry, soil biological health and crop productivity. The current study evaluated the effects of tillage and residue management on changes in soil biochemical indicators at different growth stages of wheat after 5 years of rice-wheat system. Nine treatment combinations of tillage, crop establishment and crop residue management included three main plot treatments applied to rice:(1) conventional till direct dry seeded rice(CTDSR),(2) zero till direct dry seeded rice(ZTDSR), and(3) conventional puddled manual transplanted rice(CTPTR) and three subplot treatments in subsequent wheat:(1) conventional tillage with rice residue removed(CTW-R),(2) zero tillage with rice residue removed(ZTW-R) and(3) zero tillage with rice residue retained as surface mulch(ZTW+R). Irrespective of rice treatments, ZTW+R treatment had higher soil biochemical indicators compared with ZTW-R and CTW-R at all the growth stages of wheat. Generally, all the biochemical indicators were the highest at the flowering stage of wheat. Residual effect of rice treatments was also significant on biochemical quotients in wheat, which were the highest under ZTDSR followed by CTDSR and CTPTR. The present study provided three sensitive and reliable biochemical indicators(microbial biomass, basal soil respiration and microbial quotient) which respond rapidly to change in tillage and residue management practices in RWS of South Asia.

Arsenic Removal from Groundwater Using Iron Pyrite:Influence Factors and Removal Mechanism

Iron pyrite has been reported as a kind of potential material for arsenic(As)removal from the groundwater because it exhibits a strong attraction in groundwater for both arsenite and arsenate *** this study,batch adsorption experiments were carried out to determine the optimum conditions for As adsorption by the iron pyrite adsorbent,including the initial concentration,adsorbent dosage ratio,pH,temperature and stirring *** characterization methods were employed to identify the mechanism of As *** removal efficiency for As(Ⅲ)was observed 93%at pH=7,and for As(Ⅴ)was 95%observed at pH=*** model resulted in the maximum adsorption capacity(q_(m))for As(Ⅲ)and As(Ⅴ)were 571.7 and 671.1μg/g,respectively,as well as the experiments were found to be favorable as separation factor R_(l)lue of“n”2.68 and 2.47 for As(Ⅲ)and As(Ⅴ)obtained by Freundlich model(n>1)indicates favorable *** pseudo-first and second-order kinetic models also fitted *** addition of oxalate on the adsorbent surface plays an important role for the recycling of Fe(Ⅱ)/Fe(Ⅲ)to minimize the arsenic *** surface area,ion exchange mechanism and structure of adsorbent confirmed that addition of oxalate could enhance the surface area of adsorbent.

layering Precision land leveling and Furrow Irrigated Raised Bed Planting: Productivity and Input Use Efficiency of Irrigated Bread Wheat in Indo-Gangetic Plains

Stagnating yield and declining input use efficiency in irrigated wheat of the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) coupled with diminishing availability of water for agriculture is a major concern of food security in South Asia. The objective of our study was to establish an understanding of how wheat yield and input use efficiency can be improved and how land leveling and crop establishment practices can be modified to be more efficient in water use through layering of precision-conservation crop management techniques. The “precision land leveling with raised bed” planting can be used to improve crop yield, water and nutrient use efficiency over the existing “traditional land leveling with flat” planting practices. We conducted a field experiment during 2002-2004 at Modipuram, India to quantify the benefits of alternate land leveling (precision land leveling) and crop establishment (furrow irrigated raised bed planting) techniques alone or in combination (layering precision-conservation) in terms of crop yield, water savings, and nutrient use efficiency of wheat production in IGP. The wheat yield was about 16.6% higher with nearly 50% less irrigation water with layering precision land leveling and raised bed planting compared to traditional practices (traditional land leveling with flat planting). The agronomic (AE) and uptake efficiency (UE) of N, P and K were significantly improved under precision land leveling with raised bed planting technique compared to other practices.

Effect of Mineral and Vitamin Supplementation on Performance and Haemotological Values in Broilers

A total of 120-day-old broilers were divided into four groups. In group-A, broilers were left without supplementation of minerals and vitamins(control), while the broilers in groups B, C and D were given mineral and vitamin supplementation 1-6, 1-4 and 5-6 weeks, respectively. The results showed that the feed consumption of broilers in groups A, B, C and D was 4 234.61, 4 028.38, 4 169.32 and 4 181.87 g · b-1; water intake was 9 668.88, 9 295.55, 9 882.11 and 9 402.86 l · b-1; live body weight was 2 068.90, 2 360.90, 2 255.30 and 2 157.40 g · b-1, respectively. The feed conversion ratio of broilers in groups A, B, C, D was 2.05, 1.71, 1.85 and 1.94 g · b-1, carcass weight(wt) was 1 550, 1 656, 1 552 and 1 528.8 g · b-1, and average dressing percentage was 61.24, 63.02, 62.60 and 60.51 respectively. Weight of heart in groups A, B, C and D was 15.13, 13.16, 11.72 and 11.50 g · b-1, weight of gizzard was 32.98, 37.48, 37.62 and 33.35 g · b-1, weight of liver was 51.94, 48.70, 51.94 and 48.70 g · b-1 and spleen weight was 3.48, 3.28, 3.06 and 2.82 g · b-1, respectively. Average mortality of broilers in groups A, B, C and D was 6, 2, 4 and 5 resulting 20.00%, 8.00%, 13.00% and 16.00% mortality rate, respectively. The haemoglobin level in blood of broilers in groups A, B, C and D was 9.20, 12.23, 10.87 and 7.60 g · dl-1,white blood cell level 77.47, 89.83, 81.63 and 78.13(×106 μl); red blood cell level 1.85, 2.58, 2.45 and 1.40(×106 μl), respectively. It was concluded that broilers given mineral and vitamin supplementation(Aquavit Electrolyte) for 6 weeks were proven to be most effective regime to result the lowest feed intake, the highest live body weight, better feed conversion ratio, higher carcass weight, better dressing percentage, higher net profit, relatively improved haemoglobin level in blood, increased counts of red blood cells and white blood cells.
