BACKGROUND With an ongoing demand for transplantable organs,optimization of donor management protocols,specifically in trauma populations,is important for obta-ining a high yield of viable organs per *** management of brain-dead potential organ donors(BPODs)is controversial,leading to heterogeneous clinical management *** studies have shown that when levo-thyroxine was combined with other treatments,including steroids,vasopressin,and insulin,BPODs had better organ recovery and survival outcomes were increased for transplant *** To determine if levothyroxine use in combination with steroids in BPODs increased the number of organs donated in trauma *** A retrospective review of adult BPODs from a single level 1 trauma center over ten years was *** criteria included patients who were not solid organ donors,patients who were not declared brain dead(donation after circulatory death),and patients who did not receive steroids in their hospital *** and steroid administration,the number of organs donated,the types of organs donated,and demographic information were *** analyses were performed with P0.05).In the ST/LT group,68.1%(n=47)donated a high yield(3-5)of organ types per donor compared to 42.1%(n=8)in the ST group(P=0.038).There was no difference in the total number of organ types donated between the groups(P=0.068).CONCLUSION This study suggests that combining levothyroxine and steroid administration increases high-yield organ donation per donor in BPODs in the trauma patient *** to this study include

Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Infections in Katavi Rukwa Ecosystems

A study on nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) was carried out in wildlife-livestock interface of Katavi Rukwa ecosystem (KRE). 328 livestock tissues and 178 wild animals were cultured, wild animals were sampled opportunistically during professional hunting and game cropping operations in the KRE protected areas. The objective of the study was to generate data on epidemiology of NTM in the wildlife-livestock interface of the KRE. Methods used to identify the NTM were: culture and isolation, polymerase chain reaction, protein heat shock 65 kilodalton (hsp65) and sequencing. Mycobacteria were detected on 25.9% and 11.9% of livestock and wildlife tissue cultures, respectively. The most NTM isolated were M. kansasii (30%), M. gastri (30%), M. fortuitum (1%), M. intracellulare (4%), M. indicus pranii (4%), M. nonchromogenicum (6%) and M. lentiflavum (6%). Other NTM in smaller percentages were M. hibernae, M. engbaekii, M. septicum, M. arupense and M. godii. Due to rise of NTM infection in both human and animals, it is recommended that awareness and laboratory facilities be improved to curb the underreporting especially in TB-endemic countries. For species specific identification, a network of national and regional laboratories is promoted.

Regulatory role of NFAT1 signaling in articular chondrocyteactivities and osteoarthritis pathogenesis

Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common form of joint disease, is characterized clinically by joint pain, stiffness,and deformity. OA is now considered a whole joint disease;however, the breakdown of the articular cartilage remains themajor hallmark of the disease. Current treatments targeting OA symptoms have a limited impact on impeding orreversing the OA progression. Understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying OA development isa critical barrier to progress in OA therapy. Recent studies by the current authors’ group and others have revealedthat the nuclear factor of activated T cell 1 (NFAT1), a member of the NFAT family of transcription factors, regulatesthe expression of many anabolic and catabolic genes in articular chondrocytes of adult mice. Mice lacking NFAT1exhibit normal skeletal development but display OA in both appendicular and spinal facet joints as adults. Thisreview mainly focuses on the recent advances in the regulatory role of NFAT1 transcription factor in the activities ofarticular chondrocytes and its implication in the pathogenesis of OA.

Chemically derived graphene quantum dots for high-strain sensing

Graphene quantum dots(GQDs)refer to graphene fragments with a lateral dimension typically less than 100 nm,which possess unique electrical and optical properties due to the quantum confinement *** this study,we demonstrate that chemically derived graphene quantum dots show great potential for making highly stretchable and cost-effective strain sensors via an electron tunneling ***-able strain sensors are critical devices for the field of flexible or wearable electronics which are expected to maintain function up to high strain values(>30%).However,strain sensors based on conventional materials(*** or semiconductors)or metal nanoparticles(*** or silver nanoparticles)only work within a small range of strain(*** former have a working range<1%and the latter<3%).In this study,by simply dropcasting solution-processed GQDs between the interdigitated electrodes on polydimethylsiloxane,we obtained devices that can function in the range from 0.06%to over 50%ten-sile strain with both the sensitivity and working range conveniently adjustable by the concentration of GQDs *** study provides a new concept for practical applications of GQDs,revealing the poten-tial of this material for smart applications such as artificial skin,human-machine interfaces,and health monitoring.

The value of community science data to analyze long-term avian trends in understudied regions:The state of birds in Türkiye

Recent studies have revealed concerning declines in bird populations in Europe and other parts of the *** understudied but biodiverse regions,especially those that are located along key migratory flyways,there is an unmet need to evaluate the status of resident and migratory birdlife for avian conservation *** is especially urgent at a time when recent regional studies have highlighted the scale of the decline of the European and Palearctic *** growing community science datasets may help bridge the gaps in our understanding of long-term regional avifaunal *** this study,we used eBird data submitted by observers in Türkiye to undertake the first long-term assessment of the state of the country’s birds from 2001 to *** evaluated population trends based on presence-absence data of species to determine if any birds have significantly increased or decreased in the country so far this *** provide a list of trends for 418 bird species that had large enough sample sizes of eBird observations from Türkiye,and highlight which species have significantly declined or *** found that 63 species have significantly declined in detection while 120 have significantly increased during the study *** findings provide a baseline for the future monitoring of Türkiye’s birds and help contextualize population changes of birds in Türkiye against those occurring at the continental(Palearctic)***,we include movement classifications for all of the bird species in this *** also provide a framework to effectively use eBird data to assess long-term avifaunal changes at the country-level in other understudied ***,we highlight ways in which eBirders in Türkiye and elsewhere can strengthen the quality and value of community ornithology data for population assessments and avian conservation ecology.

3D printing interface-modified PDMS/MXene nanocomposites for stretchable conductors

Additive manufacturing has rapidly evolved over recent years with the advent of polymer inks and those inks containing novel *** compatibility of polymer inks with nanomaterial inks remains a great *** yet effective methods for interface improvement are highly sought-after to significantly enhance the functional and mechanical properties of printed polymer *** this study,we developed and modified a Ti_(3)C_(2) MXene ink with a siloxane surfactant to provide compatibility with a polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)*** rheology of all the inks was investigated with parameters such as complex modulus and viscosity,confirming a self-supporting ink behaviour,whilst Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy exposed the inks’reaction *** modified MXene nanosheets have displayed strong interactions with PDMS over a wide strain *** electrical conductivity of 6.14×10^(−2) S cm^(−1) was recorded for a stretchable nanocomposite conductor containing the modified MXene *** nanocomposite revealed a nearly linear stress-strain relationship and a maximum stress of 0.25 *** 5%strain,the relative resistance change remained below 35%for up to 100 cycles,suggesting high flexibility,conductivity and mechanical *** study creates a pathway for 3D printing conductive polymer/nanomaterial inks for multifunctional applications such as stretchable electronics and sensors.

The shear-induced migration of neutrally-buoyant non-colloidal circular particles in a two-dimensional circular Couette flow is investigated numerically with a distributed Lagrange multiplier based fictitious domain *** effects of inertia and volume fraction on the particle migration are *** results indicate that inertia has a negative effect on the particle *** consistence with the experimental observations,the rapid migration of particles near the inner cylinder at the early stage is observed in the simulation,which is believed to be related to the chain-like clustering of *** migration of circular particles in a plane Poiseuille flow is also examined in order to further confirm the effect of such clustering on the particle migration at early *** is tendency for the particles in the vicinity of outer cylinder in the Couette device to pack into concentric rings at late stage in case of high particle concentration.

Stress boundary layers in the viscoelastic flow past a cylinder in a channel:limiting solutions

The flow past a cylinder in a channel with the aspect ratio of 2 ： 1 for the upper convected Maxwell （UCM） fluid and the Oldroyd-B fluid with the viscosity ratio of 0.59 is studied by using the Galerkin/Least-square finite element method and a p-adaptive refinement algorithm. A posteriori error estimation indicates that the stress-gradient error dominates the total error. As the Deborah number, De, approaches 0.8 for the UCM fluid and 0.9 for the Oldroyd-B fluid, strong stress boundary layers near the rear stagnation point are forming, which are characterized by jumps of the stress-profiles on the cylinder wall and plane of symmetry, huge stress gradients and rapid decay of the gradients across narrow thicknesses. The origin of the huge stress-gradients can be traced to the purely elongational flow behind the rear stagnation point, where the position at which the elongation rate is of 1/2De approaches the rear stagnation point as the Deborah number approaches the critical values. These observations imply that the cylinder problem for the UCM and Oldroyd-B fluids may have physical limiting Deborah numbers of 0.8 and 0.9, respectively.

Paleosols of the upper Paleozoic Sangre de Cristo Formation,north-central New Mexico:Record of early Permian palaeoclimate in tropical Pangaea

The lower Permian(Wolfcampian) Sangre de Cristo Formation of northern New Mexico consists of silty mudstones and laterally discontinuous sandstones deposited on an aggrading alluvial ***,mudstones display a variety of pedogenic *** mudstone fabrics vary from platy to prismatic;some beds display prominent pedogenic ***-colored root traces are common throughout the section,as are calcareous nodules,which vary from small bodies with diffuse boundaries to vertically stacked,discrete,cm-scale nodules(rhizocretions),and less commonly form coalescing *** occur only in the lower portion of the ca.90-m measured *** of the mudstone beds contain calcretes that are immature(calcic Protosols to calcic Argillisols),but the lower to middle portion of the section also contains mature calcrete horizons(argillic Calcisols and Calcisols).Intercalated micritic limestone beds with sharp contacts containing root traces,are of laterally variable thickness and grade to nodular *** are interpreted as floodplain pond carbonates that have undergone pedogenic alteration(palustrine limestones),indicating long periods of exposure under strongly seasonal climatic *** isotopic composition of the pedogenic carbonate displays a substantial range of values,but most of the range of variation in isotopic composition is accounted for by isotopically heavier carbonate(both carbon and oxygen) precipitated in shallow ponds subject to intense pedogenic reworking(palustrine carbonate).During the early Permian,northern New Mexico was situated in a near equatorial position(ca.4° N).The overall character of the paleosols suggests a persistent warm,semi-humid,seasonal climate throughout most of the interval of deposition during the Wolfcampian,but with episodically increased aridity during formation of the more mature *** long-term trend of climate change is evident in the stratigraphic section examined for this study.

End-Triassic nonmarine biotic events

The Late Triassic was a prolonged interval of elevated extinction rates and low origination rates that manifested themselves in a series of extinctions during Carnian, Norian and Rhaetian time. Most of these extinctions took place in the marine realm, particularly affecting radiolarians, conodonts, bivalves, ammonoids and reef-building organisms. On land, the case for a Late Triassic mass extinction is much more tenuous and has largely focused on tetrapod vertebrates（amphibians and reptiles）, though some workers advocate a sudden endTriassic（TJB） extinction of land plants. Nevertheless, an extensive literature does not identify a major extinction of land plants at the TJB, and a comprehensive review of palynological records concluded that TJB vegetation changes were non-uniform（different changes in different places）, not synchronous and not indicative of a mass extinction of land plants. Claims of a substantial perturbation of plant ecology and diversity at the TJB in East Greenland are indicative of a local change in the paleoflora largely driven by lithofacies changes resulting in changing taphonomic filters. Plant extinctions at the TJB were palaeogeographically localized events, not global in extent. With new and more detailed stratigraphic data, the perceived TJB tetrapod extinction is mostly an artifact of coarse temporal resolution, the compiled correlation effect. The amphibian, archosaur and synapsid extinctions of the Late Triassic are not concentrated at the TJB, but instead occur stepwise, beginning in the Norian and extending into the Hettangian. There was a disruption of the terrestrial ecosystem across the TJB, but it was more modest than generally claimed. The ecological severity of the end-Triassic nonmarine biotic events are relatively low on the global scale. Biotic turnover at the end of the Triassic was likely driven by the CAMP（Central Atlantic Magmatic Province） eruptions, which caused significant environmental perturbations（cooling, warming,
