The Naxi of Northwest Yunnan,China use medicinal plants to treat skin conditions related to traditional lifestyles in extreme ***,modernization endangers both the medicinal plants used to treat skin conditions and traditional ***,investigation and documentation of the medicinal plants used and associated traditional knowledge is *** this study,we conducted an ethnobotanical survey in 12 Naxi communities in Northwest *** this purpose,we used semistructured surveys to interview 840 informants from Naxi *** used informant consensus factor and use frequency as quantitative indices to evaluate the importance of medicinal plant species.A total of 161 medicinal plant species belonging to 69 families were *** highest informant consensus factor(ICF)values were recorded for skin nourishing(ICF?0.849),frostbite and chapped skin(ICF?0.833).These skin treatments are highly related to the environment and lifestyle of Naxi *** main active compounds of plants used to treat skin conditions in Naxi communities are known to have skin-treating *** study reveals that the skin conditions treated by the Naxi are associated with traditional medicine culture and social economic *** addition,this study uses ethnobotanical indices to explain how skin condition treatments are linked to the natural environment of Naxi communities.

Polo-like kinase 1 expression is a prognostic factor in human colon cancer

AIM：To clarify the expression patterns and prognostic implications of the mitotic regulator Polo-like kinase 1 （PLK1） in colon cancer. METHODS： Expression of PLK1 was investigated by immunohistochemistry （158 cases） and immunoblotting in tissue of colon adenomas and adenocarcinomas. PLK1 expression patterns were correlated with clinicopathological parameters and patient prognosis. In addition, expression of PLK1 was evaluated by immunoblot and PCR in colon carcinoma cell lines, and coexpression of PLK1 with the proliferation marker Ki-67 was investigated. RESULTS： Weak PLK1 expression was observed in normal colon mucosa and adenomas. In contrast, 66.7% of carcinomas showed strong expression of PLK1. Overexpression of PLK1 correlated positively with Dukes stage （P〈0.001）, tumor stage （P = 0.001） and nodal status （P〈0.05）. Additionally, PLK1 expression was a prognostic marker in univariate survival analysis （P〈0.01） and had independent prognostic significance （RR = 3.3, P = 0.02） in patients with Iocoregional disease. Expression of PLK1 mRNA and protein was detected in all cell lines investigated. Coexpression of PLK1 and Ki-67 was observed in the majority of colon cancer cells, but a considerable proportion of cells showed PLK1 positivity without Ki-67 expression. CONCLUSION： PLK1 is a new prognostic marker for colon carcinoma patients and may be involved in tumorigenesis and progression of colon cancer. Strategies focusing on PLK1 inhibitionin vivo might therefore represent a promising new therapeutic approach for this tumor entity. 2005 The WIG Press and Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

Rear-edge populations of montane species are known to be vulnerable to environmental change,which could affect them by habitat reduction and *** requirements of two cold-adapted boreo-alpine owl species—Boreal Owl(Aegolius funereus)and Pygmy Owl(Glaucidium passerinum)—have been studied in refugial montane populations in the western Rhodopes,South *** on owl presence and forest stand attributes recorded in situ have been used to identify significant predictors for owl *** results revealed Boreal Owl’s preference for comparatively dense forests(high canopy closure values),big trees(diameter at breast height≥50 cm)and large amount of fallen dead wood in penultimate stage of *** Pygmy Owl the only significant explanatory variable was the total amount of fallen dead *** suggest preference of both owl species for forests with structural elements typical of old-growth forests(i.e.,veteran trees,deadwood),the Pygmy Owl being less prone to inhabit managed *** at the rear edge of their Palearctic breeding range in Europe both Boreal and Pygmy Owls are of high conservation value on the Balkan ***,additional efforts are needed for their conservation in the light of climate change and resulting alteration of forest structural *** findings can be used for adjusting forest management practices in order to ensure both,sustainable profit from timber and continuous species survival.

Quantum Statistics of Random Walks

The paper dealt with quantum canonical ensembles by random walks, where state transitions are triggered by the connections between labels, not by elements, which are transferred. The balance conditions of such walks lead to emission rates of the labels. The labels with emission rates definitely lower than 1 are like modes. For labels with emission rates very close to 1, the quantum numbers are concentrated around a mean value. As an application I consider the role of the zero label in a quantum gas in equilibrium.

The influence of different surface coatings of NiTi shape memory allays was examined using in vitro testing methods. Plates of superelastic nickel-titanium shape memory allay （ NiTi ） were coated with calcium phosphates （ hydroxyapatite ） by high-temperature plasma-spraying or by dip-coating. The biocompatibility was tested in vitro by cultivation of isolated human granulocytes and whole blood cells. As substrates, pure NiTi, plasma-spray-coated NiTi and dip-coated NiTi were used. Isolated granulocytes showed an increased adhesion to both calcium phosphate-coated NiTi samples. Compared to non-coated NiTi or dip-coated NiTi, the number of dead granulocytes adherent to plasma-sprayed surfaces was significantly increased （ p 〈 0.01 ）. Whether the d/f- ferences in apoptosis of granulocytes on dip-coated vs plasma-sprayed coatings observed are due to differences in material surface morphologies has to be analyzed in further studies. Because of the cellular interactions with the coating layers, h is likely that the results obtained are not caused by the underlying NiTi but due to the coating itself.

Defeating Mechanisms of Armours for Main Battle Tanks

The fundamental protection principles of the new armours for main battle tanks against kinetic energy projectiles (KE) and chemical energy weapons (CE)--shaped charges are shortly described and their efficiency against both threats discussed. The armour topics can be split into: "perpendicular or zero-degree armours", such as rolled homogeneous armour (RHA), also with extremely high strength, ceramics, glass, liquid filled columns and explosive filled cells,"inclined armours", as spaced RHA plates with their corner effects, bulging armour, additive and integrated explosive reactive armours (ERA) and "hard kill active defence possibilities" in different defeating distances.

The Effect of MRP5-Expression on Human Erythroleukemia (HEL) Cell Growth and cGMP Levels

Background: Previous studies of patients with acute leukemia showed that plasma cGMP levels were markedly elevated before treatment, fell after successful therapy but increased after relapse. In many cells high concentrations of GMP have an antiproliferative effect. The cellular cGMP extrusion from cancer cells may represent an acquired resistance against an endogenous antiproliferative signal molecule. Multidrug resistance associated protein 5 (MRP5) has been identified as an important cGMP transporter. Methods: A human erythroleukemia cell line (HEL) was used to study the impact of cGMP and cGMP-elevating compounds like theophylline, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and sodium nitrite (NaNO2). MRP5 was overexpressed in HEL cells by transfection. Concentrations of cGMP were determined with RIA or HPLC and cell densities were determined by cytometry. Results: The concentration ratio between extra- and intracellular cGMP concentrations was >1, meaning that HEL cells extruded cGMP against a concentration gradient and MRP5 was identified in these cells. In some cell types butyrate increases cellular cGMP levels by stimulating soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) and thereby the cellular efflux. This effect did not exist for HEL cells. MRP5 transfected HEL cells which were exposed to cGMP was clearly more sensitive to the antiproliferative effect than the wild type. On the other hand, exposing the transfected HEL cells to cGMP-elevating agents (theophylline, SNP and NaNO2) showed less sensitivity than the wildtype. Conclusion: This study supports the idea that some cancers acquire resistance against endogenous signal molecules with antiproliferative potency.

Overview of Anti-tank Mines

First the different anti-tank mines laying possibilities are shortly summarized: hand emplaced, with mine layers, ground or helicopter relatively topographical well defined, and with cluster systems of projectiles, rockets and aircraft dispensers. Then examples of the three generations of anti-tank mines are presented:Ⅰ generation: detonating only beneath the track; Ⅱ generation: detonating beneath the track and belly;Ⅲ generation: mines with off-route actions. Weight and cost comparisons are strongly favoring the off-route Ⅲ-generation mines.
