Occurrence and characterization of toxigenic Bacillus cereus in food and infant feces

Objective: To investigate the true incidence of Bacillus cereus(B. cereus) in food and children diarrhea cases. Methods: A total of 110 samples of various dairy products such as raw milk, long life pasteurized milk, yoghurt and infant powdered milk formulas, raw rice, and feces were examined for the presence of B. cereus by selective plating on mannitol-egg-yolk-polymyxin agar. Confirmation of B. cereus was carried out by biochemical tests and PCR. Identification of non-B. cereus isolates was carried out by 16 S r DNA sequencing. Antimicrobial susceptibility was done by disk diffusion ***: Overall 35 samples(31.8%, n = 110) yielded Bacillus-like growth. Of which 19 samples(54.28%) were positive for B. cereus. All isolates were positive for enterotoxin production. No psychrotolerant B. cereus strains were detected in all samples. All B. cereus isolates were resistant to penicillin G, but susceptible to vancomycin, erythromycin and clindamycin. Conclusions: The results of this study confirm the importance of including B. cereus in disease control and prevention programs, as well as in routine clinical and food quality control laboratories in both Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Endometrial Injury and Sub Endometrial Doppler Study to Predict Uterine Receptivity in Women with Unexplained Infertility: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Objectives: The aim of this work was to compare the effectiveness and safety of endometrial scratching at different times of the menstrual cycle on cumulative pregnancy rate and also to assess and clarify its relationship and effect on sub-endometrial vasculature blood flow by Doppler ultrasound, in cases of unexplained infertility attempting to conceive spontaneously (without ovulation induction). Study Design: A prospective randomized clinical control study. Patients and Methods: A total of 252 eligible participants were included in the study and randomly allocated using block randomization into three groups: Group A (n = 84): endometrial scratching was performed during the pre-ovulatory days and Group B (n = 84): endometrial scratching has been done at day 7 of the cycle. Group C (control group): includes 84 cases without endometrial scratching. The Doppler ultrasound will be done. The pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI) of endometrial and sub endometrial arteries were calculated. All women were followed up to 3 months. Results: Cumulative pregnancy rate is 21.42% and 28.57% in the study groups A and B respectively which is higher than group C (control group) (4.76%) but with statistically insignificant P-value = 0.254. There is statistically significant difference in RI & PI between the studied groups and the control group on day 13 (P value < 0.001). There is statistically significant difference in PI between day 13 and day 6 for the same group in both groups (A&B) (P value < 0.003), while there is no statistically significant difference in Group C (P value = 0.156). Conclusion: Endometrial scratching is a cost-effective and easy technique which may improve clinical pregnancy rates and endometrial blood flow in women with unexplained infertility.

Backgrounds: Recent advances in post Kidney Transplantation (KT) care, have led to a dramatic improvement in short-term outcomes in order to achieve transplantation tolerance;including the ideal tool for clinical monitoring & new therapeutic line. This study was undertaken to analyze the CD62L in Kidney Transplant Recipients (KTRs) and to investigate its efficacy as a marker of good graft survival. Methods: Fifty pediatric KTRs and 12 healthy controls were included in the study, the frequency of T cell activation markers;CD62L was measured with flow cytometry after renal transplantation. Clinical, laboratory, immunosuppressive therapy data and graft function of transplant recipients were collected and correlated with their CD62L peripheral blood percentage. Results: The circulating CD62L% was significantly more in transplant recipients than controls (44.74% ± 17.45% vs. 33.36% ± 11.54%, p = 0.02). CD 62L% was more frequent in recipients of living related donors (p = 0.05), positively correlated with donor age (p = 0.04, r = -0.29*) and CD 4% (p = 0.000, r = 0.615). CD26L% did not show significant association with acute rejection or chronic rejection (p = 0.432, p = 0.91 respectively) or with graft function (serum creatinine or eGFR, p = 0.086, p = 0.988 respectively) or immunosuppressive medications. Conclusion: Peripheral CD62L% is increased after KT than healthy controls, however, it cannot reflect either clinical (serum creatinine and eGFR) or pathological renal graft injury. CD62L surface marker needs more analysis for its potential diagnostic and therapeutic implications as a Treg cell activation marker.

Objective This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of platelet volume indices(PVI),such as mean platelet volume(MPV),platelet distribution width(PDW),and plateletcrit(PCT),as prognostic indicators of testicular viability in torsion patients with steady-state sickle cell anemia(SCA)who underwent surgical *** Forty-eight patients with SCA with testicular torsion and 46 male control subjects were enrolled in the *** patients underwent scrotal color Doppler ultrasonography before surgery,and PVI(MPV,PDW,and PCT)values were measured in all *** duration and testicular volume were also *** The testicular salvage rate in patients with SCA was 73%after *** showed that MPV,PDW,and PCT values were significantly higher in torsed SCA as compared with controls(p<0.05).Orchiectomy in patients with SCA showed significantly higher MPV,PDW,and PCT values than the orchiopexy group(p<0.05).The MPV values of orchiectomy patients showed a higher significant cut-off of≥11.5 fL,which is higher than in torsed patients without SCA,as an indicator of testis *** also demonstrated a higher significant cut-off of≥12.7 fL for detorsion outcomes in patients with *** duration of less than 7 hours was also significantly correlated with orchiopexy(p≤0.001).Univariate analysis showed that higher MPV,increased PDW,and symptom duration were indicative of the outcome of testicular detorsion in *** analysis showed that increased PDW and symptom duration are prognostic parameters for testicular viability in *** Increased PDW and symptom duration can be used as parameters for predicting testicular detorsion outcomes in patients with steady-state SCA.

AIM:To identify blood donors with occult hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection(OBI) to promote safe blood ***:Descriptive cross sectional study was conducted on 3167 blood donors negative for hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg),hepatitis C antibody(HCV Ab) and human immunodeficiency virus *** were subjected to the detection of alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and aspartate transaminase(AST) and screening for anti-HBV core antibodies(total) by two different techniques;[Monoliza antibodies to hepatitis B core(Anti-HBc) Plus-Bio-Rad] and(ARC-HBc total-ABBOT).Positive samples were subjected to quantitative detection of antibodies to hepatitis B surface(anti-HBs)(ETI-AB-AUK-3,Dia Sorin-Italy).Serum anti-HBs titers > 10 IU/L was considered *** HBV DNA by real time polymerase chain reaction(PCR)(QIAGEN-Germany) with 3.8 IU/mL detection limit was estimated for blood units with negative serum anti-HBs and also for 32 whose anti-HBs serum titers were > 1000 IU/***,265 recipients were included,34 of whom were followed up for 3-6 *** were investigated for ALT and AST,HBV serological markers:HBsAg(ETI-MAK-4,Dia Sorin-Italy),anti-HBc,quantitative detection of anti-HBs and ***:525/3167(16.6%) of blood units were positive for total anti-HBc,64% of those were antiHBs *** by ARCHITECT anti-HBc assay were carried out for 498/525 anti-HBc positive samples,where 451(90.6%) confirmed *** for anti-HBc was considered confirmed only if two positive results were obtained for each sample,giving an overall prevalence of 451/3167(14.2%) for total *** DNA was quantified by real time PCR in 52/303(17.2%) of anti-HBc positive blood donors(viral load range:5 to 3.5 x 105 IU/mL) with a median of 200 IU/mL(mean:1.8 x 104 ± 5.1 x 104 IU/mL).AntiHBc was the only marker in 68.6% of *** and multivariate logistic analysis for identifying risk factors associated with anti-HBc and HBV-DNA positivity a

The aim of this study was to assess knowledge, attitudes and practice of mothers towards children’s vaccination. Background: Vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) are considered one of the main causes of sicknesses and deaths among children all over the world. Parents’ knowledge and attitude towards immunization are likely to influence uptake. Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective public health tools to prevent infectious diseases. This study assessed knowledge, attitudes and practice of mothers towards children’s vaccination. Design: Cross-sectional study was conducted from April 1st to May 1st in 2016 among mothers whose children under five years which was carried out at their home in Alfatih one. The sampling method used was simple random sampling. The first house was selected randomly according to availability of household list. Total number of mothers under study were 210 selected randomly from 400 mothers’ home. Structured interviewing sheets were used to assess sociodemographic data, knowledge, attitude and practice of mothers toward vaccination. The data were analyzed using SPSS (Stand for statistical product and service solutions) version 20. Results: It’s revealed that the correlation between knowledge and practice of the studied mothers was statistically insignificant. Conclusion: More than two third of studied mothers had poor knowledge, while on other hand their practice was good towards vaccination.

A Fast Algorithm to Solve the Bitsadze Equation in the Unit Disk

An algorithm is provided for the fast and accurate computation of the solution of the Bitsadze equation in the complex plane in the interior of the unit disk. The algorithm is based on the representation of the solution in terms of a double integral as it shown by Begehr [1,2], some recursive relations in Fourier space, and Fast Fourier Transforms. The numerical evaluation of integrals at points on a polar coordinate grid by straightforward summation for the double integral would require floating point operation per point. Evaluation of such integrals has been optimized in this paper giving an asymptotic operation count of per point on the average. In actual implementation, the algorithm has even better computational complexity, approximately of the order of per point. The algorithm has the added advantage of working in place, meaning that no additional memory storage is required beyond that of the initial data. This paper is a result of application of many of the original ideas described in Daripa [3].
