Comparison of ring 1 parameters in 37-segment multifocal electroretinography between onset and offset conditions of ring 2 to 4 in normal subjects

AIM: To investigate whether the response of a central hexagonal element corresponding to the macular area in conventional multifocal electroretinography(mfERG) tests was the same as that of experimental mfERG using single central hexagonal element stimulation. METHODS: Prospective, observational study. Thirty healthy subjects were included in this study. mfERG recordings were performed according to two protocols: stimulus with 37 hexagonal elements(protocol 1), and stimulus with a single central element created by deactivating the other 36 hexagonal elements(protocol 2). We compared differences between ring 1 parameters in each protocol. RESULTS: In protocol 1, the first positive component(P1) implicit time and P1 amplitude were 37.8±1.8 ms and 6.3±2.7 μV. After single element stimulation(protocol 2), double positive waves appeared. The implicit time and amplitude of P1 were 40.7±2.4 ms(P<0.001) and 9.1±3.3 μV(P=0.001), respectively. The implicit time and amplitude of the second positive component(P2) were 68.0±4.5 ms(P<0.001, compared with P1 in protocol 1) and 12.3±4.7 μV(P<0.001, compared with P1 in protocol 1), respectively. The amplitude of P2 in protocol 2 was about two times higher than that of P1 in protocol 1. CONCLUSION: mfERG responses of a central hexagonal element in a single element stimulation protocol are different from those of multiple element stimulation. The positive wave is more enhanced compared to that of the conventional protocol and it elongated into two wavelets.

Nitric oxide synthase 2 gene polymorphisms are associated with prostatic volume in Korean men with benign prostatic hyperplasia

The precise aetiology of benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） remains unclear; however, it is known that immunological inflammatory processes have a role in the pathogenesis of BPH initiation and progression. Nitric oxide synthase 2 （NOS2） inducible expression is closely correlated with prostatic disease, including prostate cancer and BPH. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between NOS2 polymorphisms and BPH. With a cohort of 205 controls and 229 BPH subjects, we genotyped three single nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs） in the NOS2 gene, including rs2779248 （promoter, -278 T/C）, rs 10459953 （5＇-untranslated region） and rs2297518 （exon 16, missense, Ser608Leu）, using direct sequencing and restriction fragment length polymorphism. The genotypic and allelic frequencies between control and BPH subjects were compared, and the associations among the BPH subjects were analyzed. SNPStats, SNPAnalyzer and HelixTree programmes were used to analyze SNPs. There was no association on SNPs between control and BPH subjects. When BPH subjects were analyzed, there was no association on SNPs between the low and high prostate-specific antigen groups. However, one SNP （rs 10459953, odds ratio [OR] = 0.44, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.29-0.65, P 〈 0.0001, in codominant model; OR = 0.23, 95% CI = 0.12-0.46, P 〈 0.0001, in dominant model; and OR = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.24-0.86, P = 0.015, in recessive model） was associated with prostatic volume in BPH. We detected a strong association in genotype frequencies of NOS2 SNP （rs10459953） between subjects with small and large prostatic volume in BPH. The result suggests that NOS2 may be associated with prostatic volume in BPH.

Electrochemical nitrate reduction(ENR)is an economical and eco-friendly method for converting industrial wastewater into valuable ammonia under atmospheric *** main challenge lies in designing and developing highly durable ENR *** study introduces defect-rich mesoporous CuO_(x) nanowires electrocatalyst synthesized using a novel solution-flame(sol-flame)hybrid method to control mesoporosity and introduce surface defects,thereby enhancing the electrochemical nitrate-toammonia production *** found surface defects(oxygen vacancies and Cu^(+))and unique mesoporous nanowire structure composed of tightly interconnected *** sol-flamesynthesized CuO_(x) nanowires(sf-CuO NWs)achieved superior ammonia yield rate(0.51 mmol h^(-1)cm^(-2)),faradaic efficiency(97.3%),and selectivity(86.2%)in 1 M KOH electrolyte(2000 ppm nitrate).This performance surpasses that of non-porous and less-defective CuO NWs and is attributed to the increased surface area and rapid electron transport facilitated by the distinctive morphology and generated *** calculation further suggests oxygen vacancies enhance NO_(3)^(-)adsorption on the sf-CuO NWs’surface and mitigate the competing hydrogen evolution *** study outlines a strategic design and simple synthesis approach for nanowire electrocatalysts that boost the efficiency of electrochemical nitrate-to-ammonia conversion.

Scaled-up industrial water electrolysis equipment that can be used with abundant seawater is key for affordable hydrogen *** search for highly stable,dynamic,and economical electrocatalysts could have a significant impact on hydrogen ***,we prepared energy-efficient,scalable,and engineering electronic structure modulated Mn-Ni bimetal oxides(Mn_(0.25)Ni_(0.75)O)through simple hydrothermal followed by calcination ***-optimized Mn_(0.25)Ni_(0.75)O displayed enhanced oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction(OER and HER)performance with overpotentials of 266 and115 mV at current densities of 10 mA cm^(-2)in alkaline KOH added seawater electrolyte ***,Mn-Ni oxide catalytic benefits were attributed to the calculated electronic configurations and Gibbs free energy for OER,and HER values were estimated using first principles *** real-time practical application,we mimicked industrial operating conditions with modified seawater electrolysis using Mn_(0.25)Ni_(0.75)O‖Mn_(0.25)Ni_(0.75)O under various temperature conditions,which performs superior to the commercial IrO_(2)‖Pt-C *** findings demonstrate an inexpensive and facile technique for feasible large-scale hydrogen production.

Unexpected Li displacement and suppressed phase transition enabling highly stabilized oxygen redox in P3-type Na layered oxide cathode

Oxygen redox is considered a new paradigm for increasing the practical capacity and energy density of the layered oxide cathodes for Na-ion batteries. However, severe local structural changes and phase transitions during anionic redox reactions lead to poor electrochemical performance with sluggish ***, we propose a synergy of Li-Cu cations in harnessing the full potential of oxygen redox, through Li displacement and suppressed phase transition in P3-type layered oxide cathode. P3-type Na_(0.7)[Li_(0.1)Cu_(0.2)Mn_(0.7)]O_(2) cathode delivers a large specific capacity of ~212 mA h g^(-1)at 15 mA g^(-1). The discharge capacity is maintained up to ~90% of the initial capacity after 100 cycles, with stable occurrence of the oxygen redox in the high-voltage region. Through advanced experimental analyses and first-principles calculations, it is confirmed that a stepwise redox reaction based on Cu and O ions occurs for the charge-compensation mechanism upon charging. Based on a concrete understanding of the reaction mechanism, the Li displacement by the synergy of Li-Cu cations plays a crucial role in suppressing the structural change of the P3-type layered material under the oxygen redox reaction, and it is expected to be an effective strategy for stabilizing the oxygen redox in the layered oxides of Na-ion batteries.

Dual cycloid gear mechanism for automobile safety pretensioners

The most conventional vehicle pretensioner system consists of an internal gear pair with involute teeth. However, it has been well known that the corresponding gear pairs are relatively weak under the situation of impact loadings. To improve this phenomenon, a new pretensioning gear system with cycloid teeth rather than the involute ones was proposed, and dual cycloidal gear mechanisms were designed for satisfying geometric constraints and dynamic loading conditions. The simulations of the prototypes were conducted by LS-DYNA program and the experiments for a prototype were performed for a dynamic model with impact loading devices. The results show that the better operation and the smoother motion are confirmed in the proposed cycloidal gear system rather than the conventional one without interferences between gear teeth under the impact of a crash.
