Objective:To investigate the accuracy of malaria diagnosis among pregnant women admitted in medani maternity Hospital,Central Sudan during June-October 2009 and to investigate the antimalarials prescribed in this ***:Soeio-demographic characteristics and obstetrics history were gathered using pre-tested *** finger prick blood samples were collected from pregnant women who admitted as malaria case after an initial microscopic test done by general microscopists for malaria *** antimalarial treatment prescribed by treating doctor was inquired ***:Only 21(8.6%) out of 243 pregnant women admitted as malaria case after an initial microscopic test done by general microscopists for malaria were found to have blood film *** was no significant difference in the specificity of the microscopy accuracy between those who have been investigated in the private and governmental sector,15/193(8.2%) vs.6/60(10%),(P>0.05).Quinine infusion was the prescribed drug in this ***:There is a very poor specificity of malaria microscopy in pregnant women admitted to madani maternity *** was the drug *** control programme should interfere urgently to change this situation.

Reinforced concrete structures are often exposed to many types of damages and deteriorations due to different causes and exposure conditions during their life *** of such structures is inherently subjected to uncertainty and ambiguity,where subjective opinion and incomplete numeric data are *** the damage assessment process,estimating the importance of assessment criteria is an important field in itself,and depends heavily on the experience and expertise of *** aim of this study is to present a fuzzy-based assessment model,which estimates the importance of structural assessment criteria for concrete *** work aims also at studying,identifying,and prioritizing assessment *** assessment criteria are based on close visual inspections and simple measurements that do not require special testing or long-term *** main assessment criteria include the state of building history,environmental conditions,structural capacity,durability,and professional involvement in *** of them has two levels of *** criteria weights are obtained based on the opinions of experts using the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process(FAHP)*** application of the FAHP method showed that the most important criteria is the structural capacity with a weighting factor of 50.1%,followed by the environmental condition as second,with a weighting factor of 22.5%.

Using Support Vector machine(SVm)requires the selection of several parameters such as multi-class strategy type(one-against-all or one-against-one),the regularization parameter C,kernel function and their *** choice of these parameters has a great influence on the performance of the final *** paper considers the grid search method and the particle swarm optimization(PSO)technique that have allowed to quickly select and scan a large space of SVm parameters.A comparative study of the SVm models is also presented to examine the convergence speed and the results of each *** is applied to handwritten Arabic characters learning,with a database containing 4840 Arabic characters in their different positions(isolated,beginning,middle and end).Some very promising results have been achieved.

This study aims to examine the effect of replacing vanadium by niobium and iron on the tribological behavior of hot-isostatic-pressed titanium alloy （Ti-6Al-4V） biomaterial, using a ball-on-disk-type oscillating tribometer, under wet conditions using physiological solution in accordance with the ISO7148 standards. The tests were carried out under a normal load of 6 N, with an AISI 52100 grade steel ball as a counter face. The morphological changes and structural evolution of the nanoparticle powders using different milling times （2, 6, 12 and 18 h） were studied. The morphological characterization indicated that the particle and crystallite size continuously decrease with increasing milling time to reach the lowest value of 4 nm at 18-h milling. The friction coefficient and wear rate were lower in the samples milled at 18 h （0.226, 0.297 and 0.423; and 0.66 × 10-2, 0.87 × 10-2 and 1.51 × 10-2 μm3 N-1 i, tm-1） for Ti-6Al-4Fe, Ti-6A1-7Nb and Ti-6Al-4V, respectively. This improvement in friction and wear resistance is attributed to the grain refinement at 18-h milling. The Ti-6Al-4Fe samples showed good tribological performance for all milling times.

Chronic pancreatitis(CP)is a major risk factor of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC).How CP promotes pancreatic oncogenesis remains unclear.A characteristic feature of PDAC is its prominent desmoplasia in the tumor microenvironment,composed of activated fibroblasts and *** can be characterized as m1 or m2,with tumor-inhibiting or-promoting functions,*** reported that Gremlin 1(GREm1),a key pro-fibrogenic factor,is upregulated in the stroma of *** current study aimed to investigate the expression of GREm1 and correlation between GREm1 and macrophages within the pancreas during chronic inflammation and the development of *** mRNA in situ hybridization,we detected GREm1 mRNA expression withinα-smooth muscle actin(SmA)-positive fibroblasts of the pancreatic *** designated FibroblastsGrem1+marginally increased from CP to pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia(PanIN)and *** PDAC,FibroblastsGrem1+increased with higher pathological tumor stages and in a majority of PDAC subtypes ***,FibroblastsGrem1+positively correlated with total macrophages(macCD68+)and m2 macrophages(m2CD163+)in *** begin exploring potential molecular links between FibroblastsGrem1+and macrophages in PDAC,we examined the expression of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(mIF),an endogenous counteracting molecule of GREm1 and an m1 macrophage promoting *** IHC staining of mIF,we found mIF to be expressed by tumor cells,positively correlated with GREm1;by IHC co-staining,we found mIF to be negatively correlated with m2CD163+*** findings suggest that GREm1 expression by activated fibroblasts may promote PDAC development,and GREm1/mIF may play an important role in macrophage phenotype.

The effect of sintering temperature(1073?1373 K)on the structural and tribological properties of nanostructured ballmilledβ-type Ti?15mo samples was *** prepared samples were characterized using various apperatus such as X-ray diffractometer,scanning electron microscope(SEm)and ball-on-plate type oscillating *** tests were conducted under different applied loads(2,8 and 16 N).Structural results showed that the mean pore and crystallite size continuously decreased with increasing sintering temperature to reach the lowest values of 4 nm and 29 nm at 1373 K,*** relative density of the sintered sample at 1373 K was as high as 97.0%.moreover,a higher sintering temperature resulted in higher relative density,greater hardness and elastic modulus of the *** was observed that both the friction coefficient and wear rate were lower in the sample sintered at 1373 K which was attributed to the closed porosity.

Objective: Evaluation of the effect of Ringer Lactate, as the resuscitative burn fluid according to Parkland Formula, on restoring the levels of body electrolytes and proteins. Design: A retrospective cohort study. Setting: The National Burns Unit, mafraq Hospital, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Patients: One hundred and fifteen patients admitted with fresh burns between 1st of January 2011 and 31st of December 2013, who met inclusion and exclusion criteria. methods: Team collected demographic and clinical data for each patient using a standard form. Patients received Ringer Lactate solely as the resuscitative burn fluid according to Parkland Formula. Baseline (pre-) and third-day (post-) variables included levels of sodium, potassium, chloride, proteins, and albumin. Researchers then performed paired comparisons of serum electrolytes and protein levels. Results: mean values showed maintenance of the potassium and chloride levels within the normal range after administering the Ringer Lactate, significant decline in sodium, and a marked hypoproteinaemia and hypoalbuminaemia post-resuscitation. Conclusions: Ringer Lactate used as the mere resuscitative post burn fluid is suboptimal. Sodium supplementation may be required to correct hyponatremia. Colloids, preferably intravenous albumin should be added, as advised by the original Parkland Formula.

Background: Fabella is a natural occurring sesamoid bone, cartilage or a mixture of both that is usually located at the posterolateral corner (PLC) of the knee [1]. Recently the PLC of the knee has been extensively investigated because it is a common site of injuries and diseases [2] [3]. The complexity of PLC anatomy needs to be fully understood because the fabella could be missed diagnosis as an osteochondral defect, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), calcific tendinitis, or foreign body. We present a case report of fabella syndrome triggered by trauma and also performed a review of literature for the various diagnoses that might be confused with fabella syndrome. Case presentation: A 29-year-old, Sudanese male presented to the trauma center in King Khalid Hospital in KSA, complaining of pain and partial swelling in his left knee joint due to trauma. Fabella was detected in the posterior lateral corner (PLC) of the knee joint embedded in the lateral head of the gastrocnemius muscle. All other pathological conditions were excluded. Conclusion: Fabella is sesamoid bone with variable size, found in the PLC. Commonly if present it causes periodic pain especially in the fully extended knee or it remains asymptomatic. Trauma, surgery, sports or heavy extreme activities may trigger the pain of asymptomatic fabella. Clinicians should consider that pain in the PLC of the knee can result from the presence of the fabella in a condition called fabella syndrome.

Volatile components in the extracts of basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum L.) were identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/mS) with electron ionization (EI) mode. The major volatile components of basil under investigation are α-pinene, sabinene, β-pinene, d-limonene, eucalyptol, l-linalool and estragole. Electron ionization mass spectra of these compounds have been obtained and investigated. Furthermore, the semi-empirical mNDO [modified Neglect of Diatomic Overlap] method was used to calculate the thermochemical data for the structural properties of these compounds.

Putrefaction and decay of preserved cadaver and body parts is one of the major issues that the faculties of medicines in various third world countries are facing. In this study we focus on the meaning of body preservation, causes of putrefaction and we highlight our personal experiences at the Faculty of medicine in Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University in KSA, in preserving the body cadavers. We studied different physical and chemical methods of preservation of cadavers and body parts at the faculty and their efficiency in preventing bacteria and fungi that cause putrefaction and decay.
