This study aimed to assess the fermentability of a pistachio-based *** effects of lactic acid fermen-tation on the odor profile and the stability of the beverage were also *** this end,a procedure for obtaining a pistachio beverage was developed,and the nutritional composition of the beverage was *** beverage was characterized by a high content of fiber(2.9%),fat(4.6%),and protein(2%),and contained high amounts of K and *** the experiment,43 cultures of the following lactic acid bacteria were used:Companilactibacillus paralimentarius,Companilactibacillus kimchi,Levilactibacillus brevis,Lactiplantibacillu pentosus,Lactiplantibacillus plantarum,Lactiplantibacillus paraplantarum,Latilactobacillus curvatus,Leuconostoc pseudome-senteroides,and Furfurilactobacillus *** cultures were evaluated for the following technological charac-teristics:i)growth and acidifying activity,ii)production of exopolysaccharides;iii)presence of histidine decarboxylase(hdcA)gene;iv)antimicrobial activity against Listeria *** cultures were used in model pistachio-based fermentations to assess their ability to grow and *** odor profile of the beverage after 24 h fermentation was assessed using an electronic nose system(E-nose).The pistachio-based beverage resulted an optimal substrate for lactic acid bacteria that reached loads between 8 and 10 log CFU/mL and acidified the beverage to pH values between 4 and *** the beverage,viable counts of all cultures remained above 8 log CFU/mL after 30 days of storage at 4℃.The E-nose analysis represented a valid screening method to evaluate the effects of the fermentative activity of microbial starters on the qualitative characteristics of this novel food matrix.

Complete spontaneous regression of giant focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver: Magnetic resonance imaging evaluation with hepatobiliary contrast media

Focal nodular hyperplasia(FNH) of the liver is a benign lesion occurring in 0.6%-3% of the general population that probably reflects a local hyperplastic response of hepatocytes to a vascular abnormality. Most lesions are diagnosed incidentally and the natural history of the disease remains largely unknown. It has been shown that most FNH remain stable, or even regress, over a long follow-up period. We present a patient with FNH of the liver who was followed up for 7 years. A 26-yearold woman with a 5-year history of oral contraceptive use was referred to our hospital in February 2005 for further examination of a liver tumour. The diagnosis of FNH was made using magnetic resonance(MR) imaging with hepatospecific contrast media; this technique allows a correct diagnosis, in particular distinguishing FNH from hepatic adenoma, avoiding an invasive procedure such as the lesion biopsy. After 7-year from the diagnosis, we observed the complete spontaneous regression of the lesion by enhanced MR scanning. In this patient, discontinuation of oral contraceptive use and two childbirths may have influenced the natural history of FNH. To our knowledge, in the English literature there is no report illustrating a complete regression of giant FNH but only studies of decreasing in size. The present case suggests that a young patient with giant FNH should be managed conservatively rather than by resection, because FNH has the potential for spontaneous regression.

Bile acid signaling and biliary functions

This review focuses on various components of bile acid signaling in relation to cholangiocytes. Their roles as targets for potential therapies for cholangiopathies are also explored. While many factors are involved in these complex signaling pathways, this review emphasizes the roles of transmembrane G protein coupled receptor(TGR5), farnesoid X receptor(FXR), ursodeoxycholic acid(UDCA) and the bicarbonate umbrella. Following a general background on cholangiocytes and bile acids,we will expand the review and include sections that are most recently known(within 5–7 years) regarding the field of bile acid signaling and cholangiocyte function. These findings all demonstrate that bile acids influence biliary functions which can, in turn, regulate the cholangiocyte response during pathological events.

Early changes of graft function,cytokines and superoxide dismutase serum levels after donor liver denervation and Kupffer cell depletion in a rat-to-rat liver transplantation model

BACKGROUND: Hepatic reperfusion injury may cause acute inflammatory damage, producing significant organ dysfunction, and is an important problem in liver transplantation. This experiment aimed to study early changes of hepatic function after donor liver denervation and Kupffer cell depletion in rat-to-rat liver transplantation and to evaluate the effect of pre-treatment on liver reperfusion injury. METHODS: Donor rats were divided into four groups: control group; group G was pre-treated with gadolinium chloride (G), an inhibitor of Kupffer cells; group H with hexamethonium (H), a sympathetic ganglionic blocking agent; and group HG, with combined H and G pre-treatment. Under the same conditions, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), arterial ketone body ratio (AKBR), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) of recipient rats were assessed at 4, 8, 16 and 24 hours after liver transplantation. Histological studies of the grafts were compared. RESULTS: HG pre-treatment significantly decreased ALT, TNF-alpha, and IL-6 levels, increased AKBR and SOD levels, and demonstrated less pathological damage at 8, 16 and 24 hours compared with the control group. Similar trends were also found in the other groups (G and H). However, the differences among them were not significant at 4 postoperative hours. CONCLUSIONS: Donor denervation and Kupffer cell depletion had preventive effect on liver reperfusion injury. HG pre-treatment is a feasible and reproducible method to protect grafts from reperfusion injury.

Classical electrodynamics foresees that the effective interaction force between a moving charge and a magnetic dipole is modified by the time-varying total momentum of the interaction fields. We derive the equations of motion of the particles from the total stress-energy tensor, assuming the validity of Maxwell’s equations and the total momentum conservation law. Applications to the effects of Aharonov–Bohm type show that the observed phase shift may be due to the relative lag between interfering particles caused by the effective local force.

Improving the Hydromechanical Deep-Drawing Process Using Aluminum Tailored Heat Treated Blanks

The present work demonstrates the effectiveness of combining the hydromechanical deep-drawing process with the Tailored Heat Treated Blank（THTB） technique. In the hydromechanical deep-drawing process, the fluid pressure is used for postponing the fracture occurrence in the blank, while the THTB technique allows to create a material property gradient through a suitable artificial aging treatment carried out prior to the forming process. Since the number of process variables is large, in the present work the authors propose an optimization loop for the determination of the parameters controlling the extension of the blank regions to be subjected to the aging treatment and the temperature levels to be set during the heat treatment. The proposed methodology couples a simple finite element model（Abaqus） with a multiobjective optimization platform（mode FRONTIER）. A preliminary experimental campaign was carried out for determining the effect of the aging treatment on the mechanical（through tensile tests） and deformative（through formability tests）behavior of the AC170 PX aluminum alloy. Optimization results prove the effectiveness of the adopted methodology and put in evidence that the adoption of properly aged blanks in the hydromechanical deep drawing allows to increase the limit drawing ratio and to simplify the process since it is conducted at room temperature.

Osmoprotectants and Antioxidative Enzymes as Screening Tools for Salinity Tolerance in Radish (Raphanus sativus)

The research addresses the identification of a screening methodology for salt stress tolerance in radish cultivars. In the first experiment, two different radish cultivars(long white and round red) were compared in their morphological and physiological responses to different salinity levels. Round red radish showed better morphological and physiological responses to incremental salinity in terms of yield and better adaptation of overall water relations. In the second experiment, the most tolerant genotype from the first experiment was used as a control against other seven round red radish genotypes ranked by their salinity tolerance according to morphological, physiological and biochemical indices. Salt stress did not significantly affect malondialdehyde(MDA) and hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) content, and ascorbate peroxidase(APX) activity in the studied cultivars. Nonetheless, the relatively salt tolerant cultivar SAXA2 showed higher ability to accumulate compatible solutes(*** and proteins) and maintain osmotic adjustment. In addition, cultivar SAXA2 also showed considerable increase in glutathione reductase(GR) activity. Our results supported that accumulation of proline and higher GR activity are associated with radish salt tolerance, whereas no relationship with salinity was observed in superoxide dismutase(SOD), MDA and H2O2 content.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the most frequent primary liver tumor worldwide and,despite regional therapeutic and diagnostic differences,it stands among the three most lethal cancers found in *** or ablative treatments,together with liver transplant,are the most successful clinical approaches,frequently ensuring complete HCC healing and the best survival ***,curative techniques are applicable only in patients at early stages of the disease(limits:one nodule≤5 cm in diameter or not more than three nodules all less than 3 cm in diameter).1 A significant percentage of HCC patients(≥50%)have a more advanced stage at diagnosis and must rely on less effective treatment or palliative care,thus signifying the need for alternative systemic ***,a tyrosine kinase inhibitor(TKI)was the first effective HCC drug treatment discovered after negative results were obtained with canonical cytotoxic *** 2018 lenvatinib,another TKI,was approved in the USA as a first line treatment for *** immunotherapy combining the checkpoint inhibitor,atezolizumab with the VEGF-antibody bevacizumab,has improved survival rates compared with previous TKI-based monotherapies.2 Despite treatment improvements,1-year survival is attained by only two-thirds of patients,thus prompting investigation of more effective therapies for advanced stage HCC.

Exploratory analysis of structural diversity indicators at stand level in three Italian beech sites and implications for sustainable forest management

The present study introduces an exploratory data analysis based on structural indicators with the aim to assess the effect of silvicultural practices on tree stand structure. The study was carried out in three Italian beech forests of different ages with stand structures that originated from dissimilar regeneration and cultivation techniques(Cansiglio, northern Italy, Chiarano, central Italy,and Mongiana, southern Italy). Ten structural indicators were considered when investigating the latent multivariate relationship between stand structure attributes before and after thinning operations by using a multiway factor analysis(MFA). The MFA results identified the older stand at Cansiglio as more homogeneous for cultivation regimes,and more stable to practices when compared with the younger sites(Chiarano and Mongiana). Heterogeneous stands were sensitive to silvicultural practice thus suggesting their possible impact on forest attributes. The proposed approach proved to be an operational tool to evaluate comprehensively the response of forest structure to planned interventions.
