An evolutionary computational framework for capacity-safety trade-off in an air transportation network

Airspace safety and airport capacity are two key challenges to sustain the growth in Air Transportation. In this paper, we model the Air Transportation Network as two sub-networks of airspace and airports, such that the safety and capacity of the overall Air Transportation network emerge from the interaction between the two. We propose a safety-capacity trade-off approach,using a computational framework, where the two networks can inter-act and the trade-off between capacity and safety in an Air Transport Network can be established. The framework comprise of an evolutionary computation based air traffic scenario generation using a flow capacity estimation module(for capacity), Collision risk estimation module(for safety) and an air traffic simulation module(for evaluation). The proposed methodology to evolve air traffic scenarios such that it minimizes collision risk for given capacity estimation was tested on two different air transport network topologies(random and small-world) with the same number of airports. Experimental results indicate that though airspace collision risk increases almost linearly with the increasing flow(flow intensity) in the corresponding airport network, the critical flow depend on the underlying network configuration. It was also found that, in general, the capacity upper bound depends not only on the connectivity among airports and their individual performances but also the configuration of waypoints and mid-air interactions among conflicts. Results also show that airport network can accommodate more traffic in terms of capacity but the corresponding airspace network cannot accommodate the resulting traffic flow due to the bounds on collision risk.

Numerical and Experimental Investigation on the In-Flight Melting Behaviour of Granulated Powders in Induction Thermal Plasmas

An innovative in-flight glass melting technology with thermal plasmas was developed for the purpose of energy conservation and environment protection. In this study, modelling and experiments of argon-oxygen induction thermal plasmas were conducted to investigate the melting behaviour of granulated soda-lime glass powders injected into the plasma. A two-dimensional local thermodynamic equilibrium （LTE） model was performed to simulate the heat and momentum transfer between plasma and particle. Results showed that the particle temperature was strongly affected by the flow rate of carrier gas and the particle size of raw material. A higher flow rate of carrier gas led to lower particle temperature and less energy transferred to particles which resulted in lower vitrification. The incomplete melting of large particles was attributed to the lower central temperature of the particle caused by a larger heat capacity. The numerical analysis explained well the experimental results, which can provide valuable practical guidelines for the process control in the melting process for the glass industry.

Strategies to integrate the Mughal settlements in Old Dhaka

The Mughal settlements are an integral part of Old Dhaka. Uncontrolled urbanization, changes in land use patterns, the growing density of new settlements, and modern transportation have brought about rapid transformation to the historic fabric of the Mughal settlements. As a result, Mughal structures are gradually turning into isolated elements in the transforming fabric. This study aims to promote the historic quality of the old city through clear and sustainable integration of the Mughal settlements in the existing fabric. This study attempts to analyze the Mughal settlements in old Dhaka and correspondingly outline strategic approaches to protect Mughal artifacts from decay and ensure proper access and visual exposure in the present urban tissue.

Population size estimation of chirp and grunt generating fish and mammals using cross-correlation based technique with three acoustic sensors

Passive acoustic monitoring has the potential to be a useful tool for population estimation of sound-producing fish and mammals(mostly whales).Previous work on population estimates of callers employed a simple cross-correlation technique with recordings from two acoustic sensors,and the current work extends the technique to two configurations of a 3-acoustic sensors array using two different sounds,i.e.,chirps which is commonly generated by damselfish(Dascyllus aruanus),humpback whales(Megaptera novaeangliae),dugongs(Dugong dugon)etc.,species,and grunts which is commonly generated by Japanese gurnard(Chelidonichthys kumu),Grey gurnard(Eutrigla gurnardus),gulf toadfish(***),etc.,*** compared simulated results from this technique with values determined by theoretical *** have found that an increasing number of cross-correlation function(CCF)provide better results using this ***,the technique has some limitations including negligence of multipath interference,assuming the delays to be integer.

Conduction-radiation effect on transient natural convection with thermophoresis

This paper discusses the effect of thermophoretic particle deposition on the transient natural convection laminar flow along a vertical fiat surface, which is immersed in an optically dense gray fluid in the presence of thermal radiation. In the analysis, the radiative heat flux term is expressed by adopting the Rosseland diffusion approximation. The governing equations are reduced to a set of parabolic partial differential equations. Then, these equations are solved numerically with a finite-difference scheme in the entire time regime. The asymptotic solutions are also obtained for sufficiently small and large time. The obtained asymptotic solutions are then compared with the numerical solutions, and they are found in excellent agreement. Moreover, the effects of different physical pa- rameters, i.e., the thermal radiation parameter, the surface temperature parameter, and the thermophoretic parameter, on the transient surface shear stress, the rate of surface heat transfer, and the rate of species concentration, as well as the transient velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles are shown graphically for a fluid （i.e., air） with the Prandtl number of 0.7 at 20℃ and 1.013 × 10^5 Pa.

Dispersion Relations for Isothermal Plasma around the Horizon of Reissner-Nordstroem-de Sitter Black Hole

We formulate the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic equations for isothermal plasma in spatially fiat Reissner-Nordstroem-de Sitter metric by using 3＋1 split of spacetime. Respective perturbed equations are linearized for rotating magnetized surroundings. These are then Fourier analyzed and the corresponding dispersion relations are obtained. These relations are discussed both analytically and numerically in order to investigate the nature of waves with positive angular frequency around the horizon.

Optimizing Deep Learning Parameters Using Genetic Algorithm for Object Recognition and Robot Grasping

The performance of deep learning(DL)networks has been increased by elaborating the network structures. However, the DL netowrks have many parameters, which have a lot of influence on the performance of the network. We propose a genetic algorithm(GA) based deep belief neural network(DBNN) method for robot object recognition and grasping purpose. This method optimizes the parameters of the DBNN method, such as the number of hidden units, the number of epochs, and the learning rates, which would reduce the error rate and the network training time of object recognition. After recognizing objects, the robot performs the pick-andplace operations. We build a database of six objects for experimental purpose. Experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms on the optimized robot object recognition and grasping tasks.

Aminopropyl-containing ionic liquid based organosilica as a novel and efficient adsorbent for removal of crystal violet from wastewaters

Herein a novel aminopropyl-containing ionic liquid based organosilica(ILOS-NH_2) is prepared, characterized and applied as effective adsorbent for removal of crystal violet(CV) dye from wastewater. The ILOS-NH2 material was synthesized by hydrolysis and co-condensation of 1,3-bis-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)-imidazolium chloride(BTMSPIC) under acidic conditions followed by treatment with 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane in toluene under reflux conditions. This material was characterized using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy(DRIFTS), thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDAX). The material was effectively used in the removal of crystal violet at ambient temperature and showed high capacity and stability under applied conditions. The efficacy of p H, contact time, adsorbent dose, initial dye concentration, temperature, and isotherm studies and the applicability of pseudo-first, second order and Elovich kinetic models have also been investigated.

Governance of forest conservation and co-benefits for Bangladesh under changing climate

We focused on key aspects of forest governance for biodiver- sity conservation in implementing new climate change policies. The national forest institutions must be adaptive to identify the existing pitfalls of prior conservation policies to take advantage of new climate change policies. Strengthening roles and technical capacity of national institutions for systematic biodiversity monitoring and carbon stock assessment is required in developing and least developed countries. Community participation needs careful analysis to ensure equitable ac- cess of particular social groups to local decision-making processes and to sustain optional livelihoods. The livelihood options around forest reserves or protected areas must be taken into account to enhance forest-based adaptation.

Investigation on the Effect of Geometrical and Geotechnical Parameters on Elongated Offshore Piles Using Fuzzy Inference Systems

Among numerous offshore structures used in oil extraction, jacket platforms are still the most favorable ones in shallow waters. In such structures, log piles are used to pin the substructure of the platform to the seabed. The pile＇s geometrical and geotechnical properties are considered as the main parameters in designing these structures. In this study, ANSYS was used as the FE modeling software to study the geometrical and geotechnical properties of the offshore piles and their effects on supporting jacket platforms. For this purpose, the FE analysis has been done to provide the preliminary data for the fuzzy-logic post-process. The resulting data were implemented to create Fuzzy Inference System （FIS） classifications. The resultant data of the sensitivity analysis suggested that the orientation degree is the main factor in the pile＇s geometrical behavior because piles which had the optimal operational degree of about 5° arc more sustained. Finally, the results showed that the related fuzzified data supported the FE model and provided an insight for extended offshore pile designs.
