Characterization of Oils Produced from Jatropha Curcas, Peanut and White Sesame in Burkina Faso for Possible Enable Synthesis of Biofuels

The indispensable role of energy in the correct functioning of economies and the current depletion of fossil fuels which are not renewable, have made the search for alternative energy sources a major point of reflection worldwide. Vegetable oils are increasingly being considered as a possible replacement for fossil fuels in countries of the south and North. In order to vulgarize the use of vegetable oil as fuel, it is essential that analytical protocols and standards are elaborated to assure the quality of oils as fuels. This work aims at developing protocols for the characterization of oilseeds and their resultant oils in a bid to ensure their quality for direct use as Biofuels or better still to serve as raw material in producing Biofuels. These protocols have the advantage of being reproducible, fast, and simple to implement compared to those used in Europe to characterize the oils (very complex and expensive, applied to petroleum products). Cotton, Jatropha curcas, white sesame, and peanut grains were acquired from the Zogona local market, Ouagadougou, and oil extraction was done at the village level. The resultant oils were characterized. Their physicochemical parameters (water content, oil content, acid index, the calorific value, density, and viscosity....) were evaluated at the Biomass Energy and Biofuels Laboratory (LBEB) of the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2iE) and the Burkinabé National Hydrocarbons Authority (SONABHY) Laboratory. The oilseed grain cakes (moisture, ash rate, rate of volatile matter, and oil content...) were also analysed.

Thermophysical Characterization of Typha’s Concrete for Its Integration into Construction

Energy consumption in the building sector is constantly increasing and represents more than 44% in the residential and tertiary sectors in many countries [1]. Thus, the building represents a real possibility of energy saving and is the subject of several studies particularly in actual context of experimentation with materials based on plant fibers (hemp, flax, millet wastage, etc.). These biobased materials such as typha have shown real interest in the buildings construction due to their light and porous nature. It’s in this context that we were interested in typha australis mixed with classic aggregates (cement, sand, gravel 3/8) to make typha’s concrete. On this concrete, we carried out experimental measurements in order to better understand its contributions in the building. The interesting results obtained show that typha australis, which is an invasive and harmful grass, can be valued and integrated among local building materials in the form of typha’s concrete in order to improve the energy efficiency of buildings.

How a Cancer Registry Was Set Up in Senegal: An Example to Follow for a Developing Country

Objectives: Senegal, with the support of WHO, had begun the establishment of a National Cancer Registry in 2009, although it had been at a standstill since 1969;the objective of this work was to test the reliability of data collection tools and feasibility stages necessary for the validation of media before the establishment of a national cancer registry. Methodology: We conducted a non-exhaustive preliminary study over a period of three months from the first of January to 31 March 2010 at four major hospitals in Dakar at the time. Results: Two hundred and eighty-nine cases had been identified: 44% of men (n = 127) and 56% of women (n = 162) with a sex ratio of 0.8. The ages ranged from 20 to 90 years with an average of 50 years. The main diagnostic mode was essentially histological, with 76% of cases (n = 219). The most frequent locations were: ORL (ENT meaning Ear, Nose and Throat) with 25% of cases, liver 7% and bronchopulmonary 4.5% of cases. In men, liver cancer was the most common location and women for cervical cancer with 16%. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most common histological type with 68% of cases followed by adenocarcinoma with 22% of cases. Thirty-eight percent of patients were classified as stage III and IV. A quarter of our patients had received palliative treatment. In contrast, 15 (15%) had received chemotherapy and 4% had received radiotherapy. Data collection was satisfactory. Conclusion: Cancer is a reality in Senegal but it remains underdiagnosed. The materials made it possible to make the cancer registry effective throughout the country.

Improving the Stability of the Inflatable Soil of Diamniadio by Using Typha Australis in Order to Value It in Partitioning Wall

The construction industry in Senegal is experiencing an upsurge in the development of residential housing units and administrative buildings within the new Diamniadio municipality, an area located just about 35 km from the capital city of Dakar. Laboratory oedometer or expansive-index tests, however, show poor density and compromised shear strength in the soil samples within the area -posing serious construction problems due to significant volume changes (swellings) that occur when subjected to moisture, thus, bringing into question the structural performance integrity of the soil, and the financial implications of substitute soil types used to compensate for its poor tensile strength. By way, the companies collect the soil of this location (Diamniadio) and throw it to make pile or micro-pile (pious) for their structures. This article demonstrates how we can value the soil of Diamniadio and the Typha Australis in residential building with a reasonable cost. Typha Australis is a plant generally luxuriant within the northern and central belts of Senegal but also known for its negative ecological impacts on the agricultural production of rice. The valorisation of the soil of Diamniadio will pass by the ability to increase its stability or to decrease its shrinkage/swelling rate. When we achieve it, the soil associate with Typha Australis will be used for small bricks which can be useful for partition wall and so the soil will not be ever thrown as a non-useful material. Tests results of soil specimens extracted from the site show a shrinkage rate of 29.19% with estimated cracking depths of 3.5 cm. But by adding gradually Typha Australis, the shrinkage rate will pass from 29.19% to 5.13% with the material treats with 10% by mass of Typha Australis. Moreover, the crackings in the cylindrical specimen disappear. That shows the increase of the stability;thus the composition will be used for building bricks. Ambulatory Radio Iodine Therapy in the management of Hyperthyroidism in Africa: African Systematic Review and Perspectives in Burkina Faso

Introduction: In hyperthyroidism, selective irradiation of the thyroid gland with radioactive iodine is a radical treatment and an alternative to surgery. The aim of this review is to assess the medium-term efficacy of outpatient treatment of hyperthyroidism with iodine-131 in Africa. Methods: We identified the studies carried out in Africa on outpatient radiation therapy between 2016 and 2020. For each article included, we noted the country concerned and the year of publication, the numbers studied, the socio-demographic characteristics of the patients, the indications for radio iodine therapy, the dose administered, the results of the hormonal dosage 6 months after radiation. Results: 13 retrospective studies were included to constitute a total population of 925 patients. The average age was 40.77 years, the sex ratio of 1/5.4 with a clear female predominance. The 3 main etiologies of hyperthyroidism justifying outpatient radio iodine therapy were Graves’ disease (55.89%), toxic multinodular goiter (22.70%) and toxic adenoma (21.40%). The average dose of iodine 131 administered per course is 13.7 mCi. No short-and medium-term complications were reported. The radio iodine therapy was effective in 86.08% (n = 796) of the patients with extremes of 72% and 100%. Conclusion: Radio iodine therapy is effective in Africa. It is simple, inexpensive on an outpatient basis and well tolerated. The introduction of outpatient radio iodine therapy could improve the management of patients with hyperthyroidism in Burkina Faso.

Improving the Thermal Comfort of a Building by Adding a Layer of Straw over the High Floor

This document deals with the thermal characterization of a building with a layer of straw above the high floor. In the current environmental context, in Senegal, buildings are the biggest consumers of energy. This is due to the construction materials used. Almost of buildings in Senegal used concrete (cement + aggregates) as based material construction. Due to this, the buildings require air conditioning or artificial ventilation to ensure minimum comfort. In face of this situation, it becomes useful to propose methods for reducing this high energy consumption. In this work, we propose to add a layer of straw above the high floor of a building in Matam city (North Senegal). In this case, we designed and modeled one building of single room in which the walls are in briks and a concrete slab. A bale of straw is layered on this slab in order to determine its influence on the energy consumption of the building. This study shows that the straw has a strong influence on the energy consumption of a building and the slab + straw building is more energy efficient than the bare slab building.

This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional and sensory characteristics of penne-type pasta produced from locally sourced cereals, tubers, and legumes. To achieve this, we formulated four different types of pasta with varying levels of incorporation ranging from 10 to 50% cereals such as millet, fonio, and rice, tubers such as manioc and sweet potato, and legumes such as cowpea. The results showed that the incorporation of local products considerably improved the nutrient content of penne without being rejected by consumers. Sensory analysis showed that the best results were obtained with mixtures of sweet potato, cowpea, and wheat, as well as with rice, manioc, cowpea, and sample wheat. These results are of great importance to manufacturers in a world where developing nutritious and attractive food products is a crucial challenge.

Cystic Breast Cancer. A Confusing Entity. Study of 8 Cases at Dakar University Surgical Oncology Unit

Introduction: Cystic breast cancer is a rare entity. Breast cysts are most often benign. The clinical characteristics of malignancy are not specific. Objective: To report a series of malignant cystic tumors of the breast and to describe their different characteristics. Materials and Methods: This was an observational study carried out between January 2018 and October 2021 at the Dakar university surgical oncology unit. We studied the clinical appearance, imaging, histopathology, extent of disease and treatment. We did not include cases of pure, single, or multiple chronically progressive cysts. Results: There were 8 patients, 6 women and 2 men. The average age was 44. All patients presented with a palpable unilateral deforming skin mass without inflammatory character. One patient presented with a bloody discharge. The cyst was multilocular without intracystic growth in 2 cases and presented a growth signal in 6 cases. Introduction: Spontaneous pneumothorax is a rare but serious complication of tuberculosis. Miliary tuberculosis (MT) is a severe form of tuberculosis secondary to hematogenous spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Objective: To report a case of MT complicated by pneumothorax. Methodology: This was a 25-year-old patient, farmer, followed up at the Pneumo-phtisiology department of the CHU du Point G for MT whose condition was improving after the introduction of anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy. He consulted again after experiencing chest pain. Clinical and imaging revealed a Spontaneous pneumothorax complicating MT. The treatment combined anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy, chest drainage and respiratory physiotherapy. Outcome was favorable with improvement of clinical and radiological signs. Conclusion: Pneumothorax complicating MT requires a reflective diagnostic approach and rapid management to improve its prognosis.
