Sediment dynamics and temporal variation of runoff in the Yom River,Thailand

The Yom River is one of the four major sediment sources to the Chao Phraya River in *** activities and changes in climate over the past six decades may have affected the discharge and sediment load to some *** the current study,the river discharge and sediment characteristics in the mainstream of the Yom River were investigated using the field observation data from 2011 to 2013 and the historical river flow and sediment data from 1954 to 2014 at six hydrological stations operated by the Royal Irrigation Department of Thailand(RID).The non-parametric Mann-Kendall test and double mass curve were used to analyze the sediment dynamics and temporal changes in the discharge of the Yom *** results revealed that the sediment was mainly transported in suspension,and the bed-tosuspended sediment loads ratio varied between 0 and *** daily suspended sediment load(SSL)in the upper and middle basins had a strong correlation with the daily discharge and could be represented by power equations with coefficients of determination higher than *** daily suspended sediment load in the lower basin did not directly depend on the corresponding discharge because of the reduction in river slope and water diversion by irrigation *** also appeared that the river discharges and sediment loads were mainly influenced by climate variation(floods and droughts).Moreover,the average sediment transport of the upper,middle,and lower reaches were 0.57,0.71,and 0.35 million t/y,*** sediment load in the lower basin decreased more than 50% as a result of changes in the river gradient(from mountainous to floodplain areas).The results from sediment analysis also indicated that the construction of the Mae Yom Barrage,the longest diversion dam in Thailand,and land-use changes did not significantly affect the sediment load along the Yom River.

The effects of Thailand's Great Flood of 2011 on river sediment discharge in the upper Chao Phraya River basin,Thailand

Severe flooding that occurred during the 2011 monsoon season in Thailand was the heaviest flooding in the past 50 *** rainfall over the northern part of Thailand,especially during July-August 2011,was150%higher than *** the flooding period,river flows of the four major Chao Phraya River tributaries（Ping,Wang,Yom,and Nan rivers）increased in the range of 1.4-5 times the average *** study examined the river sediment discharge of the four major rivers in the upper Chao Phraya River basin in *** four rivers are considered the main sources of sediment supply to the Chao Phraya *** surveys of the Ping,Wang,Yom,and Nan rivers were carried out in October 2011（during the Great Flood）and October 2012（one year after the flood）.Survey data included river cross sections,flow velocities,suspended sediment concentrations,and bed load transport in each *** of these data indicated that total sediment transport rates for the four main rivers during the flooding of2011 were 2.3-5.6 times higher than the average sediment discharge over 60 *** flood of 2011 significantly affected the sediment characteristics including the proportions of suspended and bed sediment loads in each river though in different *** rates of sediment transport per unit discharge for the Ping and Wang rivers dramatically increased during the 2011 flood,but the flooding had minimal effects on the sediment characteristics in the Yom and Nan *** amount of total sediment discharge in each river caused by the 2011 flooding varied between 0.3 and 1.6 ***,the bed load transport in these rivers varied between0%and 26%of the suspended sediment discharge.

Atlanto-axial langerhans cell histiocytosis in a child presented as torticollis

Langerhans cell histiocytosis(LCH) is a rare condition mostly seen in children and adolescents. Eosinophilic granuloma(EG) is one of its three clinical entities and is considered as a benign osteolytic lesion. Many reports of patients with spine histiocytosis are well documented in the literature but it is not the case of atlantoaxial localization. We report here a new observation of atlantoaxial LCH in a 4-year-old boy revealed by persistent torticollis. He was successfully treated with systemic chemotherapy and surgery. Inter-body fusion packed by autologous iliac bone was performed with resolution of his symptoms. It is known that conservative treatment is usually sufficient and surgery should be reserved for major neurologic defects in spine EG. In atlantoaxial lesion, surgical treatment should be frequently considered.

Occupational Competencies Required by Secondary School Graduates in Palm Wine Tapping for Sustainable Income in Enugu State, Nigeria

The study focused on occupational competencies required by secondary school graduates in palm wine tapping for sustainable income in Enugu State. Four research questions guided the study. Survey research design was adopted. It was carried out in Enugu State. The population for the study was 2,781 registered palm wine tappers. The sample for study was 556 （10%） of palm wine tappers. A random sampling technique was used for the study. A 49 structured competency item questionnaire was used for data collection. Three experts validated the instrument. Cronbach Alphal reliability method was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument. A reliability coefficient of 0.98 was obtained. 556 copies of the questionnaire were administered to the respondents 541 copies were retrieved and analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The result revealed that 48 competencies were required by secondary school graduates in palm wine tapping occupation for sustainable income in Enugu State. Recommendation was made based on the findings of the study.

Design of a Multimodal Light Sheet Optical System for Multivariate Applications in Phytopathology

The design of optical instruments is an active subject due to improvement in lens techniques, fabrication technology, and data handling capacity. Much remains to do to expand its application to phytopathology, which would be in particular quite useful to improve crop growth monitoring in countries like Mali. An optical multimodal system for plant samples has been developed to improve the characterization of leaf disease symptoms, provide information on their effects, and avoid their spread. Potentially inexpensive components (laser, lens, turntables camera and sample, filter, lens, camera and computer) have been selected, assembled and aligned on an optical table into a multimodal system operating in transmission, reflection, diffusion and fluorescence. The illumination and observation angles can be adjusted to optimize viewing conditions in the four modes. This scientific contribution has been an initiation into the design and implementation of an optical instrument. Initial results are shown and will now be extended in cooperation with agronomic laboratories in African countries for tests on specific plant diseases in relation with prevailing climate conditions.

Theoretical Investigation of the Bonding Properties of Bis（glycinato） d8metal（II） Dihydrate Complexes Using Density Functional Theory

Density functional theory （DFT） approach has been applied for the analysis of the bond between the [（H20）2] and the [M（gly）2] fragments in a series of trans and cis [M（gly）2[（H20）2] complexes. For comparative purpose, both relativistic and non-relativistic calculations have been performed. The nature of the interaction between the [（H20）2] and [M（gly）2] fragments was investigated using energy decomposition analysis, Hirshfeld atomic charge variation, molecular orbital considerations and bond order decomposition analysis, respectively. Results reveal that the [（H20）：]-[M（gly）2] interaction lies from the hydrogen bridge interaction between these fragments. The strength of the bonding increases in the order Ni2＋〉 Pd2＋〉 Pt2＋ while the relativistic correction tends to strengthen the [（H2O）2---[M（gly）2] bond in the order Ni 〈 Pd 〈 Pt.

DFT Study of the Solvent Effects on the Structure, UV-Vis Spectra and the Antioxidant Activity of Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester and Some of Its Derivatives

In this study, the antioxidative （3-methyl-2-butenyl caffeate）, BC efficiency of CAPE （caffeic acid phenethyl ester） and four of its derivatives （MBC （benzoic caffeate）, P3HC （phenethyl-3-hydroxy-cinnamate） and P4HC （phenethyl-4-hydroxy-cinnamate）） are compared in vacuum and in seven solvents. It turned out that the AA （antioxidant activity） in increasing order was P3HC 〈 P4HC 〈 CAPE 〈 MBC. Effects of solvents on the structure and the antioxidant activity of P3HC, P4HC, BC, MBC and CAPE, were studied at 133LYP/6-31G （d, p） then B3LYP/6-3 I＋G （d, p） level of theory using the conductor polarized continuum model methods. Thermodynamically, the authors showed that solvent effects on bond dissociation enthalpy are very weak （within 25 kJ/mol）, but sufficient to influence hydrogen bonds, O-H bond lengths and showed the preferential sites of hydrogen atom cleavage. In addition, solvent notably influences and changes the nature of the scavenging process of ROS （reactive oxygen species）, favouring by this way the HHAT （homolytic hydrogen atom transfer） in non polar solvents, the SPLET （sequential proton loss electron transfer） in polar solvents. Moreover, in chloroform and for the five molecules studied the SET-PT （sequential electron transfer proton transfer） mechanism is preferred compared to the HHAT, because in this solvent the IP is lower than the BDE. TD-DFT calculations revealed that solvent induce a bathochromic effect （red-shift of the wavelengths） coupled to hyperchromic or hypochromic effects.
