New Approach of Geomechanical Properties by Scale Effect and Fractal Analysis in the Kedougou-Kenieba Inlier (Senegal-West Africa)

This paper shows geometric aspects of rock masses in the Senegalese side of Kédougou-Kéniéba inlier. The studies are done in one part on sedimentary rocks (represented by sandstones) with stratification and on the other part in igneous rocks (represented by basalts). Geometric studies are the fractal configuration and the scale effect. Scale effect is stud- ied by comparing the results of mechanical tests done in the laboratory and on outcrops. For all samples, laboratory pa- rameters are higher than values of field. In this paper, scale effect is characterized by the decrease of mechanical pa- rameters from laboratory samples to field. The scale coefficient is defined and characterizes the relation between me- chanical properties. More importantly, the scale effect is more significant. This scale effect depends largely on the rock anisotropy. The anisotropy depends on the fracturation and the filling. The scale effect takes into account the fracturation, the filling minerals and their diversity which define the complexity of the rock. The anisotropy is complex;the impact of scale effect traduced by an increase of scale coefficient is the highest. Configuration of discontinuities also defines fractal geometry. This fractal aspect appears on the asperities, the spacing and the apertures of discontinuities. The fractal dimension is different from a parameter to another. All these two parameters estimate the stage of fracturation of the rock in a geological system and depend one on another if they are studied in the same element.

Mechanical Behavior of Pillow Lavas in MakoSupergroup: Case of South Mako Hill

This work shows the Kédougou-Kéniéba inlier (eastern Senegal) pillow lavas behavior from laboratory to field. Some uniaxial tests are carried out on five types of specimens of pillow lavas. These types of specimens are: macroscopicly healthy rock, fractured rock without filling, fractured rock filled with epidote, chlorite and calcite and rocks with tension crack filled with quartz. The Young moduli and the uniaxial compression strength are good for the healthy rock. The Young moduli fall slightly for facies with horizontal cracks while uniaxial compression strength (Rc) varies slightly. For filled fractured specimens, Rc and Young modulus (E) decrease remarkably. Decreases are most important for cracks filled with epidote, chlorite and calcite than with quartz. That is due to the differences of rigidity between these materials. Also, the slope stability of hillsides in this area depends on to these characteristics.

Many species have been drastically affected by rapid ***' s hawks from their natural habitat of open spaces and a supply of rodents,lizards and other small prey have been forced to change their natural environment adapting to living in open spaces in sub-and periurban *** areas include playgrounds,parks and school *** migration of this predatory species into these areas poses a risk to individuals,and especially the children are often attacked by claws,talons and beaks intentionally or as collateral damage while attacking rodent *** addition,the diverse micro-organisms harbored in the beaks and talons can result in wound infections,presenting a challenge to clinical *** we would like to present a case of an 80-year-old man with cellulitis of bom hands after sustaining minor injuries from the talons of a Harris s hawk and review the management *** would also like to draw attention to the matter that,even though previously a rarity,more cases of injuries caused by birds of prey may be seen in hospital settings.

Pozzolanic Activity of Old Volcanic Tuffs of Mako Area (Senegal-Oriental, West African Craton): An Economic and Environmental Interest

The volcanic tuffs of Senegal-Oriental in Mako area are produced during a calc-alkaline volcanism which occurs in this region and which is dated from about 2.3 - 1.95 Ga. Despite their altered appearance, the X-Ray diffractions show mineral paragenesis: Quartz-Kaolinite-Illite and an important amorphous phase. On the Ternary Keil-Rankin diagram for the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 the volcanic tuffs of Mako area are situated between pozzolan and the fly ash. The difference between silica and lime is greater than 34% in these volcanic tuffs. In this study, they have been mixed with Portland cement to obtain pozzolanic cements respectively with 20%, 30%, 35% and 40% of addition of volcanic tuffs. The pozzolanic reactivity is highlighted by the compressive strength increase until 90 days of conservation in water. It supposes that the vitreous phase of the volcanic tuffs reacts with the free CaO (CaOf) of Portland cement to produce new hydrated minerals. This study has a positive economic and environmental impact. Because the time of grinding of pozzolanic cements is reduced. Also, the addition of volcanic tuffs reduces the production of clinker, then the CO2 emission.

Contribution to the Petrographic and Geochemical Study of the Karthala Massif Lavas in the Bangaani Area, Grande Comore, Indian Ocean

The Bangaani area is located in the northwestern part of the Karthala Massif on the island of Grande Comore, about 10 km from the capital Moroni. It is essentially constituted of basalt plateaus outcropping in the form of pahoehoe and aa lava flows or in the form of massive vesicular or non vesicular basalt flows. Petrographic analysis of the massive basalts studied shows a porphyritic microlitic texture marked by the successive crystallization of olivines, opaque minerals, clinopyroxenes and plagioclases in a relatively abundant mesostasis. This crystallization sequence is typical of a high pressure environment corresponding to primary alkaline magmas. The geochemical study of major and trace elements shows that the basalts studied are under saturated in silica (47.24%) but rich in alkali (2.26%) and titanium (2.66%). They correspond to intraplate alkaline basalts of type oceanic island basalts (OIB) and present a primary character marked by relatively high contents of magnesium (6.69%), chromium (151.23 ppm), nickel (107.53 ppm) and scandium (27.15 ppm). The REE and multi-element diagrams confirm that the Karthala basalts are alkaline basalts of type OIB by their enrichment in LILE and their depleted character in HREE and HFSE. In terms of isotopic ratios, they are comparable to HIMU and EM I.

We report in this paper energy positions of the 2D0_2s22p2(1D)nd(2F);2D0_2s22p2(1D)nd(2D);2D0_2s22p2(1D)nd(2P);2D0_2s22p2(1D)ns(2D);2D0_2s22p3(3D)np(2P);2D0_2s22p3(3D0)np(2F), and 4S0_2s22p3(5S0)np(4P) Rydberg series in the photoionization spectra originating from 2D0 and 4S0 metastable states of O+ ion. Calculations are performed up to n = 20 using the Modified Orbital Atomic Theory (MAOT) [1]. The present results are compared to the experimental data of Aguilar et al. [2] which are the only available values. The accurate data presented in this work may be a useful guideline for future experimental and other theoretical studies.

Severe Trauma of Uterus and the Right Limb during a Road Accident at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Teaching Hospital Souro Sanou of Bobo-Dioulasso: A Case Report and Review of Literature

The authors reported a case of trauma with uterus rupture at 35 weeks gestation with fetal death in uterus with a trauma of the right limb injuries during a serious road accident. Aim: the aim is to show the increasing of road accident with the motorized tricycle and their many risks for pregnant woman. Case Presentation: our patient was thrown from the back cargo of a motorized tricycle (three-wheeled vehicle) after a collision with a truck in a rural area from 150 km to Bobo-Dioulasso. She sustained a closed abdominal injury and a severe right lower limb open injury. At admission in our department in the Teaching Hospital, she was conscious, shocked with hemodynamic instability, including low blood pressure (75/52 mmHg), rapid heart rate (140 pulses per minute), rapid breath rate (40 per minute), and cold extremities. Abdominal examination was painful with uterine hypertonia, 28 cm height uterus, and no fetal heart heartbeat. A laparotomy in urgency revealed a rupture of the uterus fundus with a dead fetus. A conservative surgical treatment was performed. An open trauma to the right limb was managed by the orthopedists with a good outcome. Conclusion: Accident trauma during pregnancy is becoming more and more frequent with the increase in means of transport in urban and inter urban areas. The transport way

Background: Open pure tibiotalar dislocations with an associated superficial fibular nerve injury are rarely reported. Case presentation: The authors report a case of open tibiotalar dislocation without any associated fracture and an associated injury of superficial fibular nerve after a motorcycle accident. A debridement plus an open reduction and casting were performed sixteen hours after the trauma. After twenty-six months, the outcome was good without any infection and a sensitivity recovery of the foot. Conclusion: A delayed management of an open tibiotalar dislocation with an associated superficial fibular nerve injury led to a good mid-term outcome.

Maize Crop N Uptake from Organic Material of <i>Gliricidia sepium </i>Coinoculated with <i>Rhizobium</i>and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungus in Sub-Saharian Africa Sandy Soil

The effect of green manure of gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp) leguminous plants applied for cereal maize cultivation and N uptake by cereal were investigated and analyzed in relation to influence of dual inoculation of gliricidia with microbial symbionts. Two pot experiments were conducted in greenhouse. The first trial was set up to enhance growth of gliricidia with exotic and indigenous rhizobial strains and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus and the second to determine the effect of gliricidia organic material on maize growth. Direct 15N-labelling techniques were used to estimate N-fixed by gliricidia plant and N uptake of maize cereal crop from green manuring was calculated. Growth of gliricidia trees estimated by aboveground biomass production and N fixed were positively affected by dual inoculations. This study showed that shoot dry weight and N accumulation of maize cultivated under gliricidia green manure were influenced by its application and indirectly by microbial treatments. The N recovery by the maize accounted 17.32% to 26.52% of N applied as gliricidia organic material. Gliricidia green manure N accumulation and release, and afterward microbial inoculations were substantially determining on maize crop N uptake and growth in sandy soil of Sub-Saharian Africa.
