The Influence of Water-Jet Modification of Soil Conditions on Reduction of Vibrations during Sheet Pile Driving in the Subsoil

Vibratory driving is the most efficient method of sheet pile installation. The elimination or at least reduction of harmful consequences of sheet pile vibratory driving becomes an increasingly important and often the decisive factor in the selection of the excavation protection technology. In difficult soil conditions with strength soil parameters, pressure water jetting precedes sheet pile driving. This technique changes the soil properties, destroying its existing structure near the installed sheet pile. Unfortunately, the results and achievements of contractors using this technique are very often held confidential or simply remain in the records and it is difficult to find papers on this subject. This article features a detailed description of jet-assisted sheet pile driving, including a prefabrication description for the sheet pile toe used to jet water through, water pressure and quantity data and the results with regard to reduce vibrations and noise, as well as to the increase in sheet pile vibratory driving performance.

Corrosion of Basic Refractories in Contact with Cement Clinker and Kiln Hot Meal

This paper investigates the new phases formation in the magnesia-spinel, magnesia-zirconia-cal- cia and magnesia-hercynite refractory products as a result of their reaction with kiln hot meal and cement clinker (both rich in SO3 and Cl ions) at the temperature range 1200°C - 1450?C. The labor- atory corrosion tests were conducted by means of pulverous method and by special coating test. The phase identity of the products as well as the mixes after corrosion tests was established by powder X-ray diffraction method. The microstructure development of the contact zones between coating and the products were studied using scanning electron microscopy SEM with EDS spectroscopy. The differences in the reactions proceeding between the phases of the test bricks and the phases of kiln hot meal and cement clinker in dependence on the temperatures have been discussed.

Blood lipids may have influence on the emotional well-being in young men

Anamnestic data on general health and medical conditions were achieved from 136 men (20-49 yrs). Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) questionnaire was used to assess depressive symptomatology. Body weight, height, waist and hip circumference, arterial blood pressure were mea- sured. Serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), LDL cholesterol (LDL-C), HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), triglicerydes (TG), glucose, SHBG, total testosterone, DHEA-S and estradiol were determined. Calculated were body mass index (BMI), waist to hip ratio (WHR) and free testosterone index (FTI). In men aged 40-49 general health significantly got worse, BMI, WHR, blood pressure increased and mean serum levels of FTI, DHEA-S, estradiol decreased in comparison to younger men. Only in 40-49 age band BDI-II scoring was negatively related with FTI, however, in the whole group there were no significant correlations. Nevertheless, some symptoms of depression were negatively related with LDL-C or HDL-C and positively with TG. Similar relations were found among young men, but not in the middle-aged. Conclusions: Only blood lipids may have influence on emotional well-being in young healthy men. The decreased testosterone level becomes probably the main risk factor for the lower mood in middle-aged men. Atherosclerosis risk factors and general health worsen with the advancing age, but they have no significant effect on psychological situation.
