The fluid mechanics of water entry is studied through investigating the underwater acoustics and the *** acoustic signals in water entry are extensively measured at about 30 different positions by using a PVDF needle *** the measurements we obtain (1)the primary shock wave caused by the impact of the blunt body on free surface;(2)the vapor pressure inside the cavity;(3)the secondary shock wave caused by pulling away of the cavity from free surface;and so *** supercavitation induced by the blunt body is observed by using a digital high-speed video camera as well as the single shot *** periodic and 3 dimensional motion of the supercavitation is *** experiment is carried out at room temperature.

Neurosteroids are rapidly emerging as important new therapies in neuropsychiatry, with one such agent, brexanolone, already approved for treatment of postpartum depression, and others on the horizon. These steroids have unique properties, including neuroprotective effects that could benefit a wide range of brain illnesses including depression, anxiety, epilepsy, and neurodegeneration. Over the past 25 years, our group has developed ex vivo rodent models to examine factors contributing to several forms of neurodegeneration in the retina. In the course of this work, we have developed a model of acute closed angle glaucoma that involves incubation of ex vivo retinas under hyperbaric conditions and results in neuronal and axonal changes that mimic glaucoma. We have used this model to determine neuroprotective mechanisms that could have therapeutic implications. In particular, we have focused on the role of both endogenous and exogenous neurosteroids in modulating the effects of acute high pressure. Endogenous allopregnanolone, a major stress-activated neurosteroid in the brain and retina, helps to prevent severe pressure-induced retinal excitotoxicity but is unable to protect against degenerative changes in ganglion cells and their axons under hyperbaric conditions. However, exogenous allopregnanolone, at a pharmacological concentration, completely preserves retinal structure and does so by combined effects on gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptors and stimulation of the cellular process of macroautophagy. Surprisingly, the enantiomer of allopregnanolone, which is inactive at gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptors, is equally retinoprotective and acts primarily via autophagy. Both enantiomers are also equally effective in preserving retinal structure and function in an in vivo glaucoma model. These studies in the retina have important implications for the ongoing development of allopregnanolone and other neurosteroids as therapeutics for neuropsychiatric illnesses.

Review: Prediction of Unexpected Fluid-Induced Vibration in Pipeline Network

This review considers unexpected destructive disasters involving fluid power plants, such as nuclear electric power plants and fluid power plants. It specifically addresses the possibility of fluid vibration induced in a pipeline network of such a plant. The authors investigate the flow oscillation induced within a T-junction for laminar steady flow at a Reynolds number less than 103 and clarify that there is a periodic fluid oscillation with a constant Strouhal number independent of several flow conditions. Generally, a nuclear electric power plant is constructed using straight pipes, elbows, and T-junctions. Indeed, a T-Junction is a basic fluid element of a pipeline network. The flow in a fluid power plant is turbulent. There are peculiar flow phenomena that occur at high Reynolds numbers, which are also seen in other flow situations;e.g., Kaman vortices are observed around a circular cylinder in low Reynolds numbers, around structures like bridges and downstream of islands in oceans. Although the flow situation of a T-junction and elbow in a fluid power plant, such as the fluid suddenly changing its flow direction is turbulent flow, the authors mention the possibility of the fluid-induced vibration of a pipeline network.

The present study aimed to design, develop, operate and evaluate a tourism planning support system that can be used to decide on places to eat lunch and dinner, sightseeing spots to visit along the way, and routes for visiting these destinations. This system was developed by integrating a web geographic information system (Web-GIS) and a sightseeing plan creation system (an eatery search system and a sightseeing route creation system). Additionally, the system was operated for one month in Central Yokohama City of Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan, and the total number of users was 79. Based on the results of the web questionnaire survey, user evaluations were particularly high for the function of sightseeing spot selection and the function of display of sightseeing plan information, and also for the entire system. From the results of the access analysis of users’ log data, the total number of sessions in the system was 263, 67% used mobile devices, and smartphones were used most frequently. Therefore, it is evident that the system was used by different types of devices just as it was designed for, and that the system was used according to the purpose of the present study, which is to support the food tourism planning of users.

Effectiveness of a Telenursing System on Side Effects of Chemotherapy by a Crossover Trial

Background: This crossover trial aimed to examine the efficacy of the Tele-nursing Symptom Management System for Chemotherapy in Outpatient Treatment (T-SCOT) in reducing the side effects in patients undergoing out-patient chemotherapy. Methods: Using a tablet computer, participants were asked to provide information on various items, including fever, nausea, hair loss, fatigue, and vital signs. Both the participants and researchers automati-cally monitored time-dependent changes in symptoms, and the researchers proposed concrete measures to reduce patients’ complications. The primary endpoint was the M. D. Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI-J) score. The secondary endpoint, Quality of Life (QOL) was evaluated using the Quality of Life Questionnaire for Cancer Patients Treated with Anticancer Drugs (QOL- ACD). Results: This study included 20 patients who met all the inclusion cri-teria, 14 of whom agreed to participate in the study. There was no significant difference between the MDASI-J and QOL-ACD pre- and post-comparison of the primary and secondary evaluations in the intervention group. The control group had significantly higher scores 3 months after the intervention for symptom intensity (p = 0.04) and symptom-induced disruption to life (p = 0.03), and the symptoms worsened. The QOL-ACD had significantly lower scores for activity (p = 0.03), overall QOL (p = 0.04), and total QOL score (p = 0.02), resulting in a lower quality of life. Conclusions: Participants used the Internet to obtain information on treatments and side effects and changed their behavior in daily life. It is speculated that the Information and Commu-nications Technology (ICT) literacy in older adults has improved, and they are benefiting from digital utilization.

Topology optimization of supporting structure for seismic response reduction of an arch

A flexible supporting structure that reduces seismic response of an arch is proposed. Topology and cross-sectional areas of the supporting structure modeled as a truss structure are optimized through two steps of static and dynamic optimization problems. In the first step, a flexible supporting structure that has diagonal displacement at the top under horizontal load is obtained by solving static optimization problems. Then, in the second step, the cross-sectional area of the flexible member is optimized to minimize the seismic response acceleration of the arch evaluated by the complete quadratic combination(CQC) method. Time-history seismic response analysis is carried out to show that the response in the normal direction of the roof successfully decreases due to flexibility of the supporting structure; in addition, installing passive energy dissipation devices into the flexible supporting structure is very effective in reducing the tangential response of the arch.
