Microstructural origins of high strength of Al-Si alloy manufactured by laser powder bed fusion:In-situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction approach

The microstructural factors contributing to the high strength of additive-manufactured Al-Si alloys us-ing laser-beam powder bed fusion(PBF-LB)were identified by in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction in tensile deformation and transmission electron ***-LB and heat treatment were employed to manufacture Al-12%Si binary alloy specimens with different *** an early stage of de-formation prior to macroscopic yielding,stress was dominantly partitioned into the α-Al matrix,rather than the Si phase in all *** concentrated Si solute(~3%)in the α-Al matrix promoted the dynamic precipitation of nanoscale Si phase during loading,thereby increasing the yield *** macroscopic yielding,the partitioned stress in the Si phase monotonically increased in the strain-hardening regime with an increase in the dislocation density in the α-Al *** a later stage of strain hardening,the flow curves of the partitioned stress in the Si phase yielded stress relaxation owing to plastic ***,Si-phase particles localized along the cell walls in the cellular-solidified microstructure play a significant role in dislocation obstacles for strain *** with the results of the heat-treated specimens with different microstructural factors,the dominant strengthening factors of PBF-LB manufactured Al-Si alloys were discussed.

Radiation exposure during image-guided endoscopic procedures: The next quality indicator for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) is one of the most frequently used image-guided procedures in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Post-ERCP pancreatitis is an important concern, and prophylaxis, cannulation and other related technical procedures have been well documented by endoscopists. In addition, medical radiation exposure is of great concern in the general population because of its rapidly increasing frequency and its potential carcinogenic effects. International organizations and radiological societies have established diagnostic reference levels, which guide proper radiation use and serve as global standards for all procedures that use ionizing radiation. However, data on gastrointestinal fluoroscopic procedures are still lacking because the demand for these procedures has recently increased. In this review, we present the current status of quality indicators for ERCP and the methods for measuring radiation exposure in the clinical setting as the next quality indicator for ERCP. To reduce radiation exposure, knowledge of its adverse effects and the procedures for proper measurement and protection are essential. Additionally, further studies on the factors that affect radiation exposure, exposure management and diagnostic reference levels are necessary. Then, we can discuss how to manage medical radiation use inthese complex fluoroscopic procedures. This knowledge will help us to protect not only patients but also endoscopists and medical staff in the fluoroscopy unit.

Opaque Minerals in LL3.0-6 Chondrites I: Mineralogy of Ti-oxides and ^(53)Mn-^(53)Cr Systematics of Ilmenite

We conducted a systematic study of oxide minerals in LL3.0-6 chondrites, and found ilmenite, rutile, perovskite and an unknown Al-Ti-Zr-oxide. Ilmenite is low in abundance, but is present in the chondrules and matrix of all the samples that we studied. The MnO content of ilmenite in LL3.0-3.3 is lower than that in LL3.5-6. The low concentration of MnO in the former is due to crystallization from chondrules melts at high temperatures. On the other hand, ilmenite composition in LL3.5-6 reflects thermal metamorphism. Therefore, ilmenite is indicative of petrologic type. We also made the first measurements of the 53Mn-53Cr systematics of ilmenite in ordinary chondrites. The age for ilmenite in Y790256 (LL6) is determined to be about 2 Ma older than angrites. This may represent the metamorphic age of the LL chondrites.

During vertebrate somitogenesis,somites bud off from the anterior end of the presomitic mesoderm(PSM).Meso-dermal posterior(Mesp)-related genes play essential roles in somitogenesis,particularly in the definition of the somite boundary *** vertebrates,two types of Mesp-related genes have been identified:Mesp1 and Mesp2 in the mouse;Meso-1 and Meso-2 in the chicken;Xl-mespa and Xl-mespb(also known as Thylacine1)in the African clawed frog(Xenopus laevis);and mesp-a and mesp-b in the ***,the functional differences between two Mesp-related genes remain *** the present study,we carried out comparative analyses of the Xl-mespa and Xl-mespb *** amino acid sequences of the Xl-mespa and Xl-mespb proteins showed a high level of *** expression of Xl-mespa started broadly in the ventrolateral mesoderm and gradually shifted to a striped pattern of *** contrast,Xl-mespb showed a striped pattern of expression from the *** expression profiles completely overlapped at the PSM during *** investigate the functional differ-ences between Xl-mespa and Xl-mespb in terms of target gene regulation,we carried out a luciferase assay using the murine Lunatic fringe(L-fng)*** of the L-fng promoter was activated more strongly by Xl-mespb than by *** same pattern was observed for the murine Mesp-related *** results suggest that the functional differences between the two types of Mesp-related genes are evolutionally conserved in vertebrates.

Super-low friction of ta-C coating in presence of oleic acid

Friction tests have been carried out on bearing steel friction pairs coated with a-C:H and ta-C under lubricated conditions with 1-hexadecene and pure oleic acid,*** results show that ta-C leads to the super-low regime with oleic acid(friction coefficient below 0.01)and that a-C:H is quite well lubricated by *** analyses by coupling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)and secondary ion mass spectrometry(SIMS)have been carried out in the case of oleic acid with ta-C and a-C:H *** show that tribochemical reactions have *** groups terminate the ta-C surface whereas a-C:H is covered by a thin tribofilm and is terminated by oleic acid *** superlow regime in the case of ta-C is mainly attributed to the presence of the OH-termination.

Fine AP particles are required to manufacture the AP-based composite propellants with a wide burning rate range for various applications, especially high burning rate propellants. However, it is difficult to prepare a fine AP safely. Some safe methods for preparing the fine AP particles are reported such as the spray-dry method and freeze-dry method. It is shown that the crystal habit modified AP particle is an effective oxidizer to enhance the burning rate.

PCA-based 3D Shape Reconstruction of Human Foot Using Multiple Viewpoint Cameras

This paper describes a multiple camera-based method to reconstruct the 3D shape of a human foot. From a foot database, an initial 3D model of the foot represented by a cloud of points is built. The shape parameters, which can characterize more than 92% of a foot, are defined by using the principal component analysis method. Then, using ＂active shape models＂, the initial 3D model is adapted to the real foot captured in multiple images by applying some constraints （edge points＇ distance and color variance）. We insist here on the experiment part where we demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method on a plastic foot model, and also on real human feet with various shapes. We propose and compare different ways of texturing the foot which is needed for reconstruction. We present an experiment performed on the plastic foot model and on human feet and propose two different ways to improve the final 3D shapers accuracy according to the previous experiments＇ results. The first improvement proposed is the densification of the cloud of points used to represent the initial model and the foot database. The second improvement concerns the projected patterns used to texture the foot. We conclude by showing the obtained results for a human foot with the average computed shape error being only 1.06 mm.

Metallic Contaminant Detection using a High-Temperature Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices Gradiometer

We develop magnetic metallic contaminant detectors using high-temperature superconducting quantum interference devices （HTS-SQUIDs） for industrial products. Finding ultra-small metallic contaminants is an important issue for manufacturers producing commercial products such as lithium ion batteries. If such contaminants cause damages, the manufacturer of the product suffers a big financial loss due to having to recall the faulty products. Previously, we described a system for finding such ultra-smafi particles in food. In this study, we describe further developments of the system, for the reduction of the effect of the remnant field of the products, and we test the parallel magnetization of the products to generate the remnant field only at both ends of the products. In addition, we use an SQUID gradiometer in place of the magnetometer to reduce the edge effect by measuring the magnetic field gradient. We test the performances of the system and find that tiny iron particles as small as 50 × 50 μm^2 on the electrode of a lithium ion battery could be clearly detected. This detection level is difficult to achieve when using other methods.
