High entropy state of orientationally-disordered clusters in Zr-based bulk metallic glass

A phase transformation of a metastable Zr2Ni intermetallic crystalline phase to vitrify was studied with molecular dynamics(MD)simulations based on a plastic crystal model(PCM),which utilizes the orientational disorder of molecules of plastic crystals in a class of soft *** simulation results showed that computational operations in MD-PCM for the random rotations of the clusters in the crystalline phase around their center of gravity and subsequent annealing lead to form a dense random packing structure from the metastable Zr2Ni *** randomly-rotated clusters provide high degrees of freedom in terms of atomic positions,which results in enhancing the glass-forming ability of the *** critical fraction of the number of rotated clusters for forming the glassy phase(fc~R)is evaluated to be ***,the critical fraction of the number of un-rotated clusters(fc~U=1-fc~R) is close to the critical concentration of site percolation for metallic *** mechanism of the metastable Zr2Ni phase to vitrify with increasing f~R was analyzed with a concept of communal entropy in the free volume theory with solid-and liquid-like cells proposed by Cohen and *** MD-PCM for the metastable Zr2Ni phase suggests that Zr-based bulk metallic glass(BMG)can be regarded as an alloy in a high rotation entropy state of clusters and that glass transition takes place by percolation of the nuclei of a liquid-like glassy phase.

The expectations for electronic paper can be summarized as flexibility, readability, and multi-functionality. It focuses on the goal of readability. Paper-like readability should be accepted as the most important target of electronic paper. A concept of readable electronic paper is proposed, and its expected properties, style variations, applications, and various candidate technologies are summarized. As an indication of the realization of readability, an evaluation of user comfort when conducting reading tasks on paper and an LCD shows that free handling of the medium is an important factor in achieving excellent readability.

Methane, Nitrous Oxide and Ammonia generation in full-scale swine wastewater purification facilities

The activated sludge process to remove nitrogen and biochemical oxygen demand （BOD） is reportedly cost-effective for swine wastewater treatment, and it use has thus increased in pig farming. Nitrous oxide （N20） is generated on farms as an intermediate product in nitrification and denitrification, and methane （CH4） is also generated from organic degradation under anaerobic conditions by microorganisms in manure or wastewater. This study was carried out at five activated sludge treatment facilities across Japan between August 2014 and January 2015. Measurements were conducted over several weeks at wastewater purification facilities for swine farms： two in Chiba prefecture （East Japan）, two in Okayama prefecture （West Japan）, and one in Saga （Southern Japan）. Taking several environmental fluctuations into account, we collected measurement data continuously day and night, during both high-temperature and low-temperature periods. The results indicated that CH4 and N20 emission factors were 0.91% （kgCHa·kg volatile solids^-1） and 2.87% （g N2O-N·kg total N^-1）, respectively. Ammonia emissions were negligible in all of the measurements from the wastewater facilities. The N20 emission factor calculated under this experiment was low compared to our previous finding （5.0%; g N2O-N·kg N^-1） in a laboratory experiment. In contrast, the CH4 emission factor calculated herein was rather high compared to the laboratory measurements. There was great variation in daily GHG emission factors measured in the actual wastewater treatment facilities. In particular, the N2O emission rate was affected by several environmental conditions at each facility location, as well as by the management of the wastewater treatment.

An Active Stereo Vision System Based on Neural Pathways of Human Binocular Motor System

An active stereo vision system based on a model of neural pathways of human binocular motor system is proposed. With this model, it is guaranteed that the two cameras of the active stereo vision system can keep their lines of sight fixed on the same target object during smooth pursuit. This feature is very important for active stereo vision systems, since not only 3D reconstruction needs the two cameras have an overlapping field of vision, but also it can facilitate the 3D reconstruction algorithm. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, some software simulations are done to demonstrate the same target tracking characteristic in a virtual environment apt to mistracking easily. Here, mistracking means two eyes track two different objects separately. Then the proposed method is implemented in our active stereo vision system to perform real tracking task in a laboratory scene where several persons walk self-determining. Before the proposed model is implemented in the system, mistracking occurred frequently. After it is enabled, mistracking never occurred. The result shows that the vision system based on neural pathways of human binocular motor system can reliably avoid mistracking.

Decolorization of Orange Ⅱ using an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor with and without co-substrates

We investigated the decolorization of Orange Ⅱ with and without the addition of co-substrates and nutrients under an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor（ASBR）.The increase in COD concentrations from 900 to 1750 to 3730 mg/L in the system treating 100 mg/L of Orange Ⅱ-containing wastewater enhanced color removal from 27% to 81% to 89%,*** the absence of co-substrates and nutrients,more than 95% of decolorization was achieved by the acclimatized anaerobic microbes in the bioreactor treating 600 mg/L of Orange Ⅱ.The decrease in mixed liquor suspended solids concentration by endogenous lysis of biomass preserved a high reducing environment in the ASBR,which was important for the reduction of the Orange Ⅱ azo bond that caused *** maximum decolorization rate in the ASBR was approximately 0.17 g/hr in the absence of co-substrates and nutrients.

Influence of the Karman Vortex Street on the Broadband Noise Generated from a Multiblade Fan

In the prediction theory for the broadband noise generated from a multiblade fan, the vortices in the Karman vortex street was divided into n pieces. The frequency distribution of the noise was estimated so that the Strouhal number could become constant even if the wake is spread by the diffusion. From the results of the measurement of the internal flow of the fan, it was found that the noise was related to the wake characteristics of the specific location in the scroll casing where the relative flow velocity was high. The noise operating in the vicinity of the maximum efficiency point of the fan was distributed over the domain from 500 Hz to 1250 Hz. It was experimentally proved that the influence of the Karman vortex street on the noise in the domains of high and low frequencies did not exist when the distribution of the estimated sound pressure level corresponded to the measured broadband noise.

Methods for Estimating Specific Loss Power in Magnetic Hyperthermia Revisited

Our purpose in this study was to present three methods for estimating specific loss power (SLP) in magnetic hyperthermia with use of an alternating magnetic field (AMF) and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and to compare the SLP values estimated by the three methods using simulation studies under various diameters of MNPs (D), amplitudes (H0) and frequencies of AMF (f). In the first method, the SLP was calculated by solving the magnetization relaxation equation of Shliomis numerically (SLP1). In the second method, the SLP was obtained by solving Shliomis’ relaxation equation using the complex susceptibility (SLP2). The third method was based on Rosensweig’s model (SLP3). The SLP3 value changed largely depending on the magnetic field strength (H) in the Langevin parameter (§) and it became maximum (SLP3max) and minimum (SLP3min) when H was 0 and ±H0, respectively. The relative difference between SLP1 and SLP2 was the largest and increased with increasing D and H0, whereas that between SLP1 and was the smallest and was almost constant regardless of D and H0, suggesting that H in ξ should be taken as H0 in estimating the SLP using Rosensweig’s model. In conclusion, this study will be useful for optimizing the parameters of AMF in magnetic hyperthermia and for the optimal design of MNPs for magnetic hyperthermia.

A Simulation Study on the Specific Loss Power in Magnetic Hyperthermia in the Presence of a Static Magnetic Field

Our purpose in this study was to present a method for estimating the specific loss power (SLP) in magnetic hyperthermia in the presence of an external static magnetic field (SMF) and to investigate the SLP values estimated by this method under various diameters (D) of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and amplitudes (H0) and frequencies (f) of an alternating magnetic field (AMF). In our method, the SLP was calculated by solving the magnetization relaxation equation of Shliomis numerically, in which the magnetic field strength at time t (H(t)) was assumed to be given by , with Hs being the strength of the SMF. We also investigated the SLP values in the case when the SMF with a field-free point (FFP) generated by two solenoid coils was used. The SLP value in the quasi steady state (SLPqss) decreased with increasing Hs. The plot of the SLPqss values against the position from the FFP became narrow as the gradient strength of the SMF (Gs) increased. Conversely, it became broad as Gs decreased. These results suggest that the temperature rise and the area of local heating in magnetic hyperthermia can be controlled by varying the Hs and Gs values, respectively. In conclusion, our method will be useful for estimating the SLP in the presence of both the AMF and SMF and for designing an effective local heating system for magnetic hyperthermia in order to reduce the risk of overheating surrounding healthy tissues.

Unexpected and Intriguing Reactivity of Imino Compounds

We have recently discovered a tandem N-alkylation-C-allylation reaction of α-imino esters with organoaluminum reagents and allyltributyltin[1]. In this reaction, iminium salts were readily prepared in situ by the oxidation of aluminum enolates, and the subsequent nucleophilic addition proceeded smoothly to afford N-alkylation-C-allylation products in good yields. During these studies, we focused on the generation of iminium species 2 by oxidizing a readily accessible and stable enol derivative with oxidants. A convenient method has been found for the generation of α-alkoxycarbonyl iminium salts 2 from ketene silyl acetals and the subsequent reaction with nucleophiles[2].
