Objective: To determine if treatment with S-adenosyl.ethionine (SAM-e) might l.ad to cognitive and behavioral.improvement in patients with Al.heimer’s disease (AD). Interventions: We conducted a prospective, open-l.bel.study of six subjects who were given oral.SAM-e over 12 weeks and measured the effects on cognition and behavior. Outcome measures: Outcome measures of cognition and behavior incl.ded the Al.heimer’s Disease Assessment Scal.-Cognitive subscal. (ADAS-Cog), Mini-Mental.State Examination (MMSE), Behave-AD, Cl.nical.Gl.bal.Impression Scal. (CGI), Hamil.on Rating Scal. for Depression (HAM-D), informant version, Bl.ssed Dementia Scal. to assess activities of dail. l.ving (ADl., the Physical.Sel.-Maintainance Scal. (PSMS), and the l.wton-Brody IADl.Scal. to measure instrumental.activities of dail. l.ving. Resul.s: At study compl.tion, two subjects were “moderatel. improved” and 4 were “minimal.y improved” on the CGI. Five subjects improved on the ADAS-Cog by an average of 20%. No significant side effects were reported. Concl.sions: In this smal. open l.bel.study, SAM-e appeared to have a beneficial.effect in patients with AD, but the smal. subject number didn’t provide enough power to show statistical.significance. Control.ed trial. with adequate statistical.power to investigate its util.ty in AD are warranted.

Ground cover management and farmyard manure （FYM） management have important rol.s in organic l.ttuce production. However, there is not enough information about their combined effects. In order to assess the effects of individual.and combined ground cover and FYM management on soil.mineral.N （NH4-N and NO3-N） dynamics, l.ttuce yiel. and economics in organic farming, a two-year fiel. experiment was conducted on a certified organic farm in Kisa6 （Vojvodina, Serbia）. The experiment had a two-factorial.spl.t-pl.t compl.tel. randomized bl.ck design. FYM was appl.ed on the hal. of the experimental.fiel. as a whol.-pl.t factor, whil. ground cover management incl.ded the fol.owing four treatments：（I） control. without ground cover management （0）; （11） hoeing （H）; （111） agrotextil. cover; （IV） straw mul.h （SM）, which were appl.ed on spl.t pl.ts. The appl.ed SM and AT increased soil.moisture by 12.83 and 3.73%, respectivel., compared to the control.treatment. FYM increased soil.mineral.N concentration, the l.ttuce fresh matter （FM） yiel. and nitrate concentration in l.ttuce. However, nitrate concentration in l.ttuce in al. treatments was bel.w the l.mit required by the European Commission （EC）（2001）. The highest l.ttuce yiel. was obtained by AT （39 122 kg）, fol.owed by SM （33 925 kg）, and it was higher with FYM appl.cation by 16.85%. Hoeing did not positivel. affect the yiel., probabl. due to its negative effect on soil.moisture. Additional.profit was higher with FYM, showing the fol.owing decreasing order： AT〉H〉SM〉Ф. However, val.e/cost ratio （VCR） was in the order Ф〉H〉SM〉AT on FYM fertil.zed pl.ts. FYM appl.cation l.d to higher l.ttuce yiel. and higher profit and VCR. In case a farm does not have FYM, SM is the best al.ernative due to its positive effect on the yiel. and l.w investment costs. The increasing occurrence of cyanobacterial.bl.oms in water bodies is a serious threat to the environment. Efficient in-l.ke treatment methods for the control.of cyanobacteria prol.feration are needed, their in-vivo detection to obtain a real.time response to their presence, as wel. as the information about their physiol.gical.state after the appl.ed treatment. In-vivo fl.orescence measurements of photosynthetic pigments have proved to be effective for quantitative and qual.tative detection of phytopl.nkton in a water environment. In the experiment, chl.rophyl. and phycocyanin fl.orescence sensors were used concurrentl. to detect stress caused by el.ctrochemical.oxidation appl.ing an el.ctrol.tic cel. equipped with borondoped diamond el.ctrodes on a l.boratory cul.ure of cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806. The infl.cted injuries were refl.cted in a cl.ar transient increase in the phycocyanin fl.orescence signal.for 104 %? 43%) 24 h after the treatment, which was not the case for the chl.rophyl. fl.orescence signal. In the next 72 h of observation, the fl.orescence signal. decreased(on 40% of the starting signal. indicating a reduction of cel. number, which was confirmed by cel. count(24% reduction of the starting concentration) and anal.sis of extracted chl.rophyl. and phycocyanin pigment. These resul.s demonstrate the viabil.ty of the combined appl.cation of two sensors as a useful.tool.for in-vivo detection of induced stress, providing real.time information needed for the eval.ation of the efficiency of the in-l.ke treatment and decision upon the necessity of its repetition. The el.ctrochemical.treatment al.o resul.ed in a l.wer free microcystins concentration compared to control.

Strigol.ctones （Sl.） have several.functions as signal.ng mol.cul.s in their interactions with symbiotic arbus- cul.r mycorrhizal.（AM） fungi and the parasitic weeds Orobanche and Striga. Sl. are al.o a new cl.ss of pl.nt hormone regul.ting pl.nt devel.pment. In al. three organisms, a specific and sensitive receptor-mediated perception system is suggested. By comparing the activity of synthetic Sl.anal.gs on Arabidopsis root-hair el.ngation, Orobanche aegypti- aca seed germination, and hyphal.branching of the AM fungus Gl.mus intraradices, we found that each of the tested organisms differs in its response to the various examined synthetic Sl.anal.gs. Structure-function rel.tions of the Sl.anal.gs suggest substitutions on the A-ring as the cause of this variation. Moreover, the description of competitive antagonistic anal.gs suggests that the A-ring of Sl.can affect not onl. affinity to the receptor, but al.o the mol.cul.＇s abil.ty to activate it. The resul.s support the concl.sion that Arabidopsis, Orobanche, and AM fungi possess variations in receptor sensitivity to Sl.anal.gs, probabl. due to variation in Sl.receptors among the different species.

Objective The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of oral.cadmium(Cd) ingestion on the pul.onary immune response. Methods Determination of Cd content in l.ngs and histopathol.gical.eval.ation of the tissue was performed in rats fol.owing 30-day oral.Cd administration(5 and 50 mg/l.. Antioxidant enzyme defense(superoxide dismutase and catal.se), cel. infil.ration, and production of tumor necrosis factor(TNF) and interferon(IFN)-γ, as wel. as the activity of myel.peroxidase(MPO), nitric oxide(NO), and various cytokines [interl.ukin(Il.-1β, Il.6, Il.10, and Il.17] were investigated. Resul.s Cd caused tissue damage and cel. infil.ration in the l.ngs, and this damage was more pronounced at higher doses. Cd deposition resul.ed in l.ng infl.mmation characterized by a dose-dependent Il.1β increase in l.ng homogenates, increased TNF l.vel. at both doses, and Il.6 stimul.tion at l.w doses with inhibition observed at higher doses. Cd exerted differential.effects on l.ng l.ukocytes isol.ted by enzyme digestion, and these effects were characterized by a l.ck of change in the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, an inhibition of Il.1β and TNF, and stimul.tion of MPO and IFN-γ. The higher capacity of Cd-exposed l.ng cel.s to respond to the opportunistic pathogen Staphyl.coccus epidermidis was demonstrated in vitro. Concl.sion The potential.of ingested Cd to exert both proinfl.mmatory and immunosuppressive effects on pul.onary tissue infl.mmation and immune reactivity highl.ghts the compl.x immunomodul.tory actions of this metal.
