Attitudes toward forest diversity and forest ecosystem services—a cross-cultural comparison between China and Switzerland

Aims Despite the current interest in services provided by ecosystems and the role of biodiversity,the relationship among human attitudes,biodiversity and ecosystem services has hardly been ***,few studies have examined attitudes toward nature in cross-cultural *** study investigates the attitudes of Chinese and Swiss people,both environmental experts and laypersons,toward forest biodiversity and ecosystem *** Overall,640 people in China and Switzerland were interviewed with the help of a standardized *** each country,the study population was equally divided into an urban(80 city dwellers and 80 environmental science students)and a rural(80 forest visitors and 80 farmers)study *** 15-minute interviews took place in the cities of Beijing and Zurich and in the rural forested areas of Dujiangyan,Sichuan Province and Lake Sempach,canton *** toward forest biodiversity were investigated with the help of color photographs that depicted both monocultures and speciesrich forests typical for China and *** toward ecosystem services were investigated with the help of 13 statements on provisioning,regulating,cultural and supporting services of *** Findings On average,Chinese participants showed no strong preferences for biodiversity,whereas the Swiss clearly preferred species-rich forests over ***,Chinese environmental science students did prefer species-rich forests and attributed to them a higher conservation value because of their higher *** there were no strong preferences for Chinese versus Swiss forests,all participants correctly answered that Chinese forests are more species rich in terms of plants and animals and thus found them less boring and more interesting,but also less managed,than Swiss *** participants highly valued the ecosystem services provided by forests;especially the regulating and supporting ***

Primary and secondary organic aerosols in PM_(2.5)were investigated over a one-year campaign at Zouk Mikael and Fiaa,*** n-alkanes concentrations were quite similar at both sites(26-29 ng/m^(3))and mainly explained by anthropogenic emissions rather than natural *** concentrations of total Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(PAHs)were nearly three times higher at Zouk Mikael(2.56 ng/m^(3))compared to Fiaa(0.95 ng/m^(3)),especially for indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene linked to the presence of the power plant.A characteristic indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene/(indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene+benzo[g,h,i]perylene)ratio in the range0.8-1.0 was determined for heavy fuel oil combustion from the power *** acids and hopanes were also investigated and were assigned to cooking activities and vehicular emissions *** were identified for the first time in Lebanon with high concentrations at Zouk and Fiaa(106.88 and 97.68 ng/m^(3) respectively).Moreover,the biogenic secondary aerosols revealed higher concentrations in *** total terpene concentration varied between 131 ng/m^(3) at Zouk Mikael in winter to 469 ng/m3 at Fiaa in ***,the concentrations of the dicarboxylic acids especially for adipic and phthalic acids were more influenced by anthropogenic *** analysis of molecular markers and diagnostic ratios indicated that the sites were strongly affected by anthropogenic sources such as waste open burning,diesel private generators,cooking activities,road transport,power plant,and industrial ***,results showed different pattern during winter and summer ***,higher concentrations of biogenic markers were clearly encountered during the summer period.

The short term(hourly scale)variability of heterotrophic prokaryote(HP)vertical distribution and respiratory activity,was investigated in the north-western(NW)Mediterranean *** vertical distribution was determined on board by flow cytometry analysis of seawater samples collected by series of CTD *** counts and viability were determined for all *** respiratory rates were determined later in the laboratory from filtered seawater samples(23 dm^(3))from 300-1150-m *** average cell viability was 94.8%±2.2%(n=240).There was no accumulation of dead cells,due to quick decay of damaged *** the epipelagic layer,three HP groups were distinguished,two(HNA1,HNA2)who se cells exhibited a high nucleic acid content and one(LNA)with low nucleic acid content ***2 was most populated at 50 m but not detected at 90 m and below,presumably aerobic anoxygenic photoheterotrophic bacteria(AAPs).The variability in HP abundance was mainly confined in the upper 80 m.A few secondary peaks of HP abundance were observed(80-150 m)in connection with abundance troughs in the surface *** cells were continuously present in a wide layer around 500 m(mean 191×10^(3)cells/cm^(3)).Below this layer,HP abundance randomly exhibited peaks,coupled to respiratory rate *** HP abundance and variability in the water column was suppressed during a strong wind *** observed sporadic variability was tentatively interpreted through a pulsed carbon-export mechanism induced by the microorganism production of dissolved poly saccharide s,followed by flocculation and rapid *** mechanism would thus contribute to(ⅰ)preventing organic matter accumulation in the epipelagic layer,(ⅱ)seeding the water column with live HP cells,and(ⅲ)supplying the aphotic water column with fre sh and labile organic *** important vertical flux mechanism needs further observations and modelling.

The Altaid tectonic collage extends over Central Asia, exposing numerous accretionary orogens that can account for the Palaeozoic continental crust growth. A pluridisciplinary approach, using geochronological, geochemical, structural and palaeomagnetic tools was carried out to unravel the architecture and the evolution of West Junggar （Northwestern China）, a segment of the Altaid Collage. A polycyclic geodynamic evolution is inferred and includes：（1） an Early Palaeozoic cycle, characterized by the closure of two oceanic basins bounded by island-arc systems; （2） an Early Devonian subduction jamming resulting in a minor-scale collision documented by thrusting, syntectonic sedimentation and subsequent crutal thinning associ- ated with alkaline magmatism; （3） a Late Palaeozoic cycle, driven by the evolution of two opposite subduction zones devel- oped upon the Early Palaeozoic basement. Detailed structural analysis and paleomagnetic data provide constraints for the late evolution of Junggar in the frame of the development of the Late Palaeozoic Kazakh orocline, which led to oblique subduction and transpression in the West Junggar accretionary complex. Progressive buckling of the Kazakh orocline further resulted in Late Carboniferous to Permian wrench tectonics, and lateral displacement of lithotectonic units. Block rotations that continued after the Late Triassic are due to diachronous intraplate reactivation. This scenario mirrors the Palaeozoic geodynamics of the Altaid Collage. Multiple Early Palaeozoic collisions of intra-oceanic arcs and micro continents have contributed to the formarion of the Kazakhstan Microconrinent. Since the Late Palaeozoic, subductions formed around this microcontinent and the final oblique closure of oceanic domains resulted in the transcurrent collage of Tarim and Siberia cratons. Palaeozoic strike-slip faults were later reactivated during Mesozoic intracontinental tectonics.

Chemical eye burns present an avoidable,but frequent,occupational injury with potentially detrimental consequences for the quality of life and occupational rehabilitation of the injured.A periodical review of guidelines is required to assure the optimal emergency *** reviewed the literature with emphasis on current German guidelines,primarily *** the crucial first-line measure,the injury prevention has failed and an eye burn has been sustained,the immediate and copious rinsing of the eye is the pivotal emergency treatment *** the immediacy and sufficiency of the emergency rinsing are largely unanimous,there is an ongoing debate about the benefits and risks of specific rinsing solutions,and regular updates on guidelines and recommendations for the emergency treatment are *** easiest and readily available rinsing solution is tap water,which fulfils the crucial criteria conveniently in most industrialized countries:purity,sterility,and neutral p *** rinsing solutions are proposing higher osmolality to stabilize the physiological p H,because of their superior buffering ***,there is no compelling evidence for a substantial benefit,and some reports suggest that there could be unwanted side *** combination with the substantially increased expenditure and a more complex handling procedure,currently a general recommendation of any other solution than tap water is not warranted.

Objective To investigate the association between histocompatibility leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DRB1 alleles and alveolar echinococcosis (AE).Methods Thirty-five patients with AE in high prevalence areas in Gansu Province of China were tested for the HLA-DRB1 gene using the polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primer (PCR-SSP) technique. The results were compared with those of 104 healthy *** The frequency of the HLA-DRB1*040x gene was 26% in the patient group,which was significantly higher than that in the control group (9.62%) with a relative risk (RR) of 4.45 (χ 2 =13.67, P <0.01),and an etiological fraction (EF) of 0.20. The frequency of the HLA-DRB1 *0701 allele was significantly lower in the patient group (2.86%) as compared to the control group (13.94%; χ 2=6.67,P <0.05) with a preventable fraction (PF) of 0.30. The frequencies of other DRB1 alleles were not significantly *** Susceptibility to AE is significantly associated with the HLA-DRB1*040x.
