Three novel amprolium HCl（AMP）-selective electrodes were investigated with 2-nitropheny. octy.ether as a plasticiser in a poly.eric matrix of poly.iny. chloride（PVC）. Sensor I was fabricated using potassium tetrakis（4-chloropheny.） borate（Tp ClPB） as a cationic exchanger without incorporation of an *** Ⅱ used 2-hy.roxy.propy. β-cy.lodextrin as an ionophore while sensor Ⅲ used p-tert-buty.calix[8]arene as an ionophore. The three proposed sensors showed Nernestian response slopes of 29.2±0.8,29.3±0.6 and 30.2±0.4 m V/decade over the concentration range from 10–6 to 10–2 mol L_（-1）,respectively. The proposed sensors display.d useful analy.ical characteristics for the determination of AMP in bulk powder, different pharmaceutical formulations, and chicken liver and in the presence of ethopabate. The proposed method was validated according to ICH guidelines for its linearity. accuracy.precision and robustness.

Spectrofluorimetric and spectrophotometric stability.indicating methods were developed and validated for analy.is of veralipride （Ver） in presence of its hy.roly.ic and oxidative degradants. The spectrofluorimetric method was based on direct measurement of the intrinsic fluorescence of Ver at 366 nm after excitation at 299 nm using sodium laury. sulfate （SLS） as micelle enhancer. The fluorescence intensity.plot was linear over the concentration range 1.0-10.0 ***-1. The high sensitivity.of the method allowed its successful application to the analy.is of Ver in spiked human plasma. Two other methods were developed. They.are based on the oxidative coupling reac- tion of Vet with 3-methy. benzothiazolin-2-one hy.razone （MBTH） hy.rochloride in presence of ceric ammonium sulphate in an acidic medium. The first method depends on spectrophotometric measurement of the stable green colored oxidative coupling product at 660 nm. The different experimental parameters affecting the reaction were optimized. Linearity.range is 10.0--100.0 ~tgomL-1. The second method depends on a fluorescence quenching effect of Vet on the fluorescence of Ce3＋. The difference in fluorescence intensity.was measured at 380 nm after excitation at 300 nm. This method is applicable over the concentration ranges 0.25-2.50 pg-mL-1. The methods were validated according to the ICH guidelines. They.were successfully.applied for the analy.is of Ver in drug substance, drug product and in laboratory.prepared mixtures containing different percentages of hy.roly.ic and oxidative degradants.

In this paper, a mathematical model of the photovoltaic （PV） pumping sy.tem＇s main components is firstly.established. Then, the design of maximum power point tracking （MPPT） stage that ensures battery.charging is described. This work is motivated by.the need of photovoltaic generator （PVG） that efficiently.extracts maximum power. The PVG is a special source of energy.which has nonlinear current-voltage characteristics depending on variations in temperature and solar irradiance. In order to achieve the MPPT operating goals, a special interest is focused on the variable structure sliding mode （SM） control strategy.and the classic perturb and observe （P＆O） algorithm. The permanent magnet sy.chronous motor （PMSM） is selected as a pump driver. The field oriented control is performed as the motor drive strategy. Simulation results show a high level of efficiency. obtained with the proposed PV based pumping sy.tem. The performance comparison between SM controller and P＆O controller has been carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the former in drawing more energy.and a fast response against irradiation disturbances.

Background and aim: In patients infected with chronic hepatitis C virus, liver biopsy.is the gold standard method of staging fibrosis. Different combinations of serum markers attempted to correlate with hepatic fibrosis in place of liver biopsy.and have shown encouraging results. The aim of our study.is to evaluate the diagnostic value of endoglin and FIB-4 as non-invasive markers of hepatic fibrosis in HCV patients. Methods: We estimated serum endoglin & FIB-4 index in 40 infected chronic hepatitis C patients. Histological staging of hepatic fibrosis was done according to the METAVIR scoring sy.tem. Results: Both endoglin and FIB-4 index showed positive correlation with age and aspartate transaminase and inverse correlation with albumin. The diagnostic performance determined by.AUROCs for early.fibrosis (≤F2), was 0.868 for endoglin and 0.887 for FIB-4, at cut off va- lues of 5.5 & 0.98 with sensitivity.of 64.3% & 82.1%, and specificity.of 100% & 85% respectively. For ad-vanced fibrosis (>F2), the AUROC was 0.98 for endoglin and 0.967 for FIB-4, obtained at cut off values of 6.29 & 1.6, with sensitivity.of 100% & 91.7%, and specificity.of 89.3% & 92.9%, respectively. Conclusion: Both serum endoglin and FIB-4 index are fairly.accurate in differentiating stages of hepatic fibrosis;their combination in a single equation enhanced the accuracy.of fibrosis detection in chronic HCV patients.

AIM:To investigate the value of duplex Doppler ultrasonography.(US) in the assessment of the hemody.amics of the portal and hepatic veins in a cohort of children with chronic liver disease (CLD) and to detect any.relationship between the US changes,etiology.and severity.(or stage) of CLD. METHODS:We prospectively.enrolled 25 children with biopsy.proven CLD. Thirteen had cirrhosis (aged 8.9 ± 2.0 y.ars) and 12 had chronic hepatitis (aged 9.3 ± 2.3 y.ars). Gray.scale and color-coded duplex Doppler US were performed for all,as well as 30 healthy.age and sex-matched controls. Findings were correlated with clinical,laboratory.and histopathological characteristics. RESULTS:Prominent caudate lobe was detected in 100% of cirrhotics,but none of the chronic hepatitis or controls. Thickened lesser omentum and loss of the triphasic waveform of the hepatic vein were present in 69.2% and 53.8% of cirrhotics vs 33.3% and 8.3% of chronic hepatitis respectively. Portal vein flow velocity.was significantly.lower (P y.higher (P y.of CLD could be detected. CONCLUSION:Duplex Doppler added to gray.cale US can detect significant morphologic and portal hemody.amic changes that correlate with the severity.(stage) of CLD,but not with etiology.

AIM:To assess whether schistosomiasis coinfection with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) influences hepatic fibrosis and pegy.ated-interferon/ribavirin (PEG-IFN/ RIB) therapy.response. METHODS:This study.was designed as a retrospective analy.is of 3596 chronic HCV patients enrolled in the Egy.tian National Program for HCV treatment with PEG-IFN/RIB. All patients underwent liver biopsy.and anti-schistosomal antibodies testing prior to HCV treatment. The serology.results were used to categorize the patients into group A (positive schistosomal serology. or group B (negative schistosomal serology.. Patients in group A were given oral antischistosomal treatment(praziquantel, single dose) at four weeks prior to PEG-IFN/RIB. All patients received a 48-wk course of PEG-IFN (PEG-IFNα2a or PEG-IFNα2b)/RIB therapy. Clinical and laboratory.follow-up examinations were carried out for 24 wk after cessation of therapy.(to week 72). Correlations of positive schistosomal serology.with fibrosis and treatment response were assessed by.multiple regression analy.is. RESULTS:Schistosomal antibody.was positive in 27.3% of patients (15.9% females and 84.1% males). The patients in group A were older (P = 0.008) and had a higher proportion of males (P = 0.002) than the patients in group B. There was no significant association between fibrosis stage and positive schistosomal serology.(P = 0.703). Early.virological response was achieved in significantly.more patients in group B than in group A (89.4% vs 86.5%, P = 0.015). However, significantly.more patients in group A experienced breakthrough at week 24 than patients in group B (36.3% vs 32.3%, P = 0.024). End of treatment response was achieved in more patients in group B than in group A (62.0% vs 59.1%) but the difference did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.108).
