Comparison and Assessment of Success of Models in Watershed Simulation and Management

In Jordan, Zarqa River Basin (ZRB) has been taken as a case study for applying water management models because of its limited water resources and due to the fact that the basin is dwelling with about 52% of Jordan’s population. The surface water resources are mainly used for agriculture because they are mixed with treated water and cannot be used for domestic purposes. This paper aims to demonstrate the contributions of Models in watershed management that provide indirect ways of assessing and confirming the success of models in water flow simulation. The method includes transferring the computed hydrologic parameters for Zarqa basin’s sub-catchments within Watershed Modeling System (WMS) into Water Resources Model (WRM) and HEC-1 models. Then the results of the HEC-1 and WRM models are compared according to their basin’s simulation with the real basin. The study includes description of the HEC-1, WRM models philosophy, the models representation, and simulation results and analysis of the Zarqa River Basin. Comparing the results of WRM and HEC-1 models proved their simulation efficiency in predicting the flow of Zarqa River Basin. Nevertheless, the philosophy of HEC-1 is a single storm event and is based on values of curve number, while WRM philosophy describes the water flow and availability, and demand and supply balance on a daily basis across the basin. The models’ predictions for the real flow definitely establish the modeling certainty and help the water resources’ developers to incorporate different basin features for watershed representation, simulation, and management. Hence, the certainty of the results in modeling provides indirect ways of assessing the success of models’ simulations.

Disi is a fossil groundwater shred between Jordan and Saudi Arabia with a very high quality properties, this water is limited and has been used for irrigation purposes between both countries, this study helps in highlighted the importance of this water as stratigic reserve to be use later on. This study shows that the amounts of groundwater affected by the thickness of the saturated zone in the aquifer, the porosity of the aquifer and the groundwater flow in the basin. Abstraction from the aquifer will affect water quality so this point must be clearly understood all the time.

Influence of Bed Geometry on the Drying of Skimmed Milk in a Spouted Bed

In this present work, the fluidynamic and drying process of skimmed milk in conical and conical-cylindrical spouted bed was analyzed as a function of different bed geometry and operating conditions. It used three internal cone angles (45°, 60° and 75°), different loads of inert particles (1.50, 3.00 and 4.50 kg) and a fixed static bed height (20.50 cm). Polyethylene particles of 4.38 mm of diameter and 930.50 ± 0.3 kg/m3 of specific mass were used as inert particles. An artificial neural network model was trained to predict the peak pressure drop and the minimum spout velocity from an experimental data bank. The experimental results showed a significant effect of geometric characteristics of the bed on fluidynamics parameters. It was also observed for the operating conditions that conical spouted bed and cone angle of 45° were more suitable for drying skimmed milk. The neural network provided predictions in good agreement with experimental data.

Massive duodenal variceal bleed; complication of extra hepatic portal hypertension: Endoscopic management and literature review

Bleeding from duodenal varices is reported to be a catastrophic and often fatal event. Most of the cases in the literature involve patients with underlying cirrhosis. However, approximately one quarter of duodenal variceal bleeds is caused by extrahepatic portal hypertension and they represent a unique population given their lack of liver dysfunction. The authors present a case where a 61-year-old male with history of remote crush injury presented with bright red blood per rectum and was found to have bleeding from massive duodenal varices. Injection sclerotherapy with ethanolamine was performed and the patient experienced a favorable outcome with near resolution of his varices on endoscopic follow-up. The authors conclude that sclerotherapy is a reasonable first line therapy and review the literature surrounding the treatment of duodenal varices secondary to extrahepatic portal hypertension.

AIMTo evaluate the prevalence, risk factors and outcome of acute kidney injury （AKI） in very low birth weight （VLBW） infants. METHODSIn this retrospective study of VLBW infants, we analyzed the prevalence of AKI, as defined by changes in serum creatinine and urine output, associated risk factors and *** total of 293 VLBW infants （mean gestational age 28.7 wk） were included, of whom 109 weighed less than 1000 g at birth. The overall prevalence of AKI was 11.6% （22% in infants with a birth weight under 1000 g and 5.4% those heavier）. A total of 19 （55%） affected infants died, with a mortality rate of 58% in infant less than 1000 g and 50% in those heavier. After adjusting for confounding variables, only necrotizing enterocolitis （NEC） remained associated with AKI, with odds ratio of 4.9 （95%CI： 1.9-18.6）. Blood pressure and glomerular filtration rate （GFR） were not different between affected infants and the others upon discharge from hospital. A normal GFR was documented in all affected infants at one year of *** Using Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes defnition of AKI, it occurred in over 10% of VLBW infants, more commonly in infants with lower birth weight. NEC was an independent associated risk factor. Renal function, as defined by GFR, was normal in all surviving affected infants 10 to 12 mo later.

糖尿病是妊娠常见的并发症之一,目前全世界各种类型的糖尿病患病率均在上升。妊娠合并糖尿病与母婴短期及长期的不良结局相关。妊娠合并糖尿病的治疗目标是尽量减少高血糖相关的母婴不良事件。糖尿病的类型决定了治疗方式各有侧重,既有关注改变妊娠期糖尿病患者的生活方式,也有关注糖尿病合并妊娠患者的持续血糖监测及胰岛素泵的应用。然而,考虑到不同类型的妊娠合并糖尿病均存在高血糖,因此治疗方法存在相当大的重叠。此外,尽管针对妊娠合并糖尿病治疗的研究已进行数十年,但是受限于患者群体特征的改变,不同治疗方法的局限性依然很突出。具体而言,尽管肥胖和糖尿病同时发生,包括血糖控制目标在内的治疗建议没有相应地改变,此外也没有针对每种类型的妊娠合并糖尿病单一最佳治疗策略。因此,妊娠期间的糖尿病女性更需要个体化的治疗,以最大限度地保证母婴的短期及长期健康。本文将回顾近期的临床研究,总结妊娠合并糖尿病的治疗策略和新的治疗方式。

Obese Nulliparous Women and the Risk for Maternal and Fetal Complications

Obesity is becoming a global health care problem and an increasing number of obese female patients are getting pregnant. Aim of our study was to know the prevalence of obesity in nulliparous women and its impact on pregnancy as well as fetus. Patients and Methods: All nulliparous women with single pregnancy and gestational age of 37 weeks and above were included in the study. Primigradvida with multiple pregnancies, fetal abnormalities, and gestational age less than 37 weeks were excluded. Patients were divided into normal, overweight and obese group according to their prepragnancy body mass index (BMI). Results: Total 2243 nulliparous women were included in the study, majority (56.8%) of patients were in the normal BMI group and only 24.8% were obese. But a significantly higher number of obese nulliparous women were in the age group of 18 to 29 years (P < 0.05). Comorbidities were significantly higher in obese primigravida. The incidence of gestational diabetes and pregnancy induced hypertension was significantly higher (P 0.05) in obese nulliparous women. Overweight and obese nulliparous patients required significantly higher emergency caesarean section and assisted vaginal deliveries compared to the normal BMI nulliparous women (P < 0.03). Conclusion: Maternal obesity leads to prepartum, peripartum as well as fetal complication. Obese pregnant patients had a significant risk of developing gestational diabetes and pregnancy induced hypertension. In these patients the prevalence of assisted vaginal and cesarean deliveries is significantly high.

Objective:To examine the effect of coadministration of different medicinal plant extracts(curcumin and extracts of Nigella sativa L.[***,Jia Hei Zhong Cao],Zingiber officinale Rosc.[***,Sheng Jiang],and Punica granatum L.[***,Shi Liu])with spiramycin(SP)against the cystogenic ME-49 Toxoplasma gondii(***)strain in immunocompromised ***:We utilized 68 mice categorized into 8 groups:2 non-infected controls(immunocompetent and immunocompromised),1 infected control,and 5 infected and treated *** the experiment,the cerebral tissues of each mouse underwent parasitological,histopathological,and immunohistochemical ***:Compared with the infected non-treated group,all infected treated groups showed significant reductions in brain cyst numbers(all P<0.05),with the highest reduction rate(77.4%)recorded for *** and SP combination(G8).Only G8 showed a significant reduction in mouse deaths compared with the other *** regards to restoring histopathological changes and decreasing inflammation,the groups infected and treated with curcumin and *** combined with SP showed the best results(P<0.05).Combinations of curcumin and extracts of *** and *** with SP signif-icantly restored the cerebral expression of caspase-3 compared with the *** extract combination(P<0.05).G8 showed non-significant expression compared with the local expression in the negative control ***:Our study revealed that the coadministration of *** extract with SP was the most effective combination against chronic cerebral toxoplasmosis.

Integration system is used to denote practices that combine systematic use of the land and technologies,in which forest species are used in conjunction with herbaceous plants and/or animals respecting a spatial or temporal *** that this type of production seeks to balance ecological and economic factors,it is important to understand the financial benefits and risks involved in this *** analysis,therefore,acts as an important analysis tool to foster this type of *** paper aimed to conduct analysis of investment risk of a crop-livestock-forestry system deployed in Brazil,comparing two different production scenarios,scenario I with 17 ha and scenario II with 25 *** risk analysis was performed using the Monte Carlo method and sensitivity analysis(by varying the factors:the discount rate,productivity and price).A cash flow was elaborated based on annual cost and revenues data of the agricultural crops(corn and soybeans),livestock and eucalyptus,using an interest rate of 6%per *** results indicated that the optimal age for cutting the eucalyptus was at seven years on both scenarios;scenario I had better return on investment using deterministic and probabilistic methods;scenario I presents higher investments risks;there is a negative relation between discount rate and annualized net present value(ANPV);increased productivity of crops provides greater profitability to the system;there has been an increase in the economic viability of the system,as value has been added to the *** Carlo method and the sensitivity analysis showed to be an appropriate tool to analyze the risk of crop-livestock-forestry systems,making it possible to foresee how the project will respond to possible scenarios.
