Atmospheric jets-with shear-can induce a vertical oceanic circulation with upwelling and down -welling even over the open ocean in regions where the Coriolis parameter can be regarded as a constant. Winds with nosheard that bloe parallel to the equator can also induce a vertical oceanic circulation with upwelling and downwellingwithin an equatorial radius of deformation. This study concerns the oceanic response to a westerly wind burst, in theform of an atmospheric jet, similar to those that occur over the western equatorial Pacific . It is shown that the shear ofthe wind, if it is within an equatorial radius of deformation, can alter the vertical circulation substantially, especially ifthere are westerly and easterly winds near the equator. A commentary on measurements amde during a westerly windburst over the western equatorial Pacific has been given.

尽管第一次法国大革命成为其后一代人关注的焦点,然而搜寻可靠资料并据此对大革命的成因、过程以及特性作出评价的工作却出人意料地处于一时的疏忽与懈怠中.事实上,此类资料浩如烟海,大量地存在于'陈情书'--诉怨报告书中.根据法国三级会议的古有惯例,此类报告书由法国各个基层行政机关送至中央机关即后来的首届国民代表大会(the first Constituent Assembly).然而,直到晚近才有人对这些及其他类似库存的历史财富进行仔细研究.据传(我不知道此事是否已付印),一位著名的德国历史学家得知在巴黎有数捆旧文件自恐怖统治结束以来就一直被尘封于默默无闻的公共救助和安全委员会的重建的档案室中时,难掩其惊异之情.'但是,你们有关于大革命的经典之作',他说,'难道那些作者都不曾翻阅过这些文件吗?','不曾',回答是,'其上是1794年的尘埃.'

Annual　variation　rate　of　global　sea－level　rise　and　the　prediction　for　the　21st　century

Inhibition of BCR-ABL kinase activity by imatinib (Gleevec) is highly effective in treating human Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in chronic phase, but not Ph+ B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) and CML blast crisis. We find this is partially because inhibition of BCR-ABL kinase activity does not eradicate leukemia stem cells. Sole inhibition of BCR-ABL kinase activity by imatinib is not curative, but inhibition of kinase activity of both Src kinases and BCR-ABL by BMS-354825 leads to a relative cure of B-ALL. However, complete eradication of leukemic cells in B-ALL and CML mice requires targeting of BCR-ABL and Src kinases and killing of BCR-ABL-expressing hematopoietic stem cells insensitive to both imatinib and BMS-354825.

An analytics method of predicting the annual variation rate (AVR) of global sea-level (GSL) is *** the calculation by using the mean sea-level data collected from the tidal gauge stations over the world, a GSL rise of 0. 15～0. 16 cm/a is obtained. The predicted values of AVR of GSL for the 21st century are presented. The authors' results have been compared to those reported by other scientists at home and abroad. The method proposedhere is more convenient and precise.

Endoscopic pancreatic sphincterotomy:indications,outcome,and a safe stentless technique

This work examines the fracture behavior of a functionally graded plate containing parallel surface cracks with alternating lengths subjected to a thermal *** thermal stress intensity factors(TSIFs) at the tips of long and short cracks are calculated using a singular integral equation *** critical thermal shock△Tc that causes crack initiation is calculated using a stress intensity factor *** examples of TSIFs and△Tc for an Al2O3/Si3N4 FGM plate are presented to illustrate the effects of thermal property gradation,crack spacing and crack length ratio on the TSIFs and△*** is found that for a given crack length ratio,the TSIFs at the tips of both long and short cracks can be reduced significantly and△Tc can be enhanced by introducing appropriate material *** TSIFs also decrease dramatically with a decrease in crack spacing. The TSIF at the tips of short cracks may be higher than that for the long cracks under certain crack geometry ***,the short cracks instead of long cracks may first start to grow under the thermal shock loading.

AIM Endoscopic pancreatic sphincterotomy is less widely practiced than biliary sphincterotomy, in part because of the lack of firm data regarding its indications and safety. In addition, recent reports of ductal and parenchymal changes occurring after pancreatic stenting raise concerns about the standard practice of stent placement at the time of pancreatic sphincterotomy. We report our experience with pancreatic sphincterotomy and describe the use of a technique involving overnight nasopancreatic drainage rather than stenting.METHODS We reviewed the records of the 164 pancreatic sphincterotomies performed on 160 patients at our institution between January 1, 1991, and October 1, 1996, comparing procedures done with overnight nasopancreatic catheter placement with those done with stenting or no drainage. We also examined the longterm clinical outcome of patients after pancreatic sphincterotomy.RESULTS Of the 164 sphincterotomies, 98 were done with overnight nasopancreatic drainage, 50 with stent placement, and 16 with no drainage. Complications (all pancreatitis) were significantly more frequent in the group with no drainage (125%) as compared with those with drainage (07%); P<0003. Nasopancreatic drainage was as safe as stent placement, with no complications after 98 procedures. Pancreatic sphincterotomy was effective when used as primary therapy, with 64% of patients so treated experiencing complete and longlasting resolution of symptoms after the procedure.CONCLUSION Pancreatic sphincterotomy is safe and effective, although pancreatic drainage is required to reduce the incidence of pancreatitis. Overnight nasopancreatic drainage is the method of choice, as it carries as low a complication rate as stent placement, but without the need for a repeat procedure, and presumably without the risk of ductal and parenchymal damage.
