A Nu.erical Simu.ation of Air Flow in the Hu.an Respiratory System Based on Lu.g Model

The lu.g is an important organ that takes part in the gas exchange process. In the stu.y of gas transport and exchange in the hu.an respiratory system, the complicated process of advection and diffu.ion (AD) in airways of hu.an lu.gs is considered. The basis of a lu.ped parameter model or a transport equ.tion is modeled du.ing the inspiration process, when oxygen enters into the hu.an lu.g channel. The qu.ntitative measu.ements of oxygen are detached and the model equ.tion is solved nu.erically by explicit finite difference schemes. Nu.erical simu.ations were made for natu.al breathing conditions or normal breathing conditions. The respiratory flow resu.ts for the resting conditions are fou.d strongly dependent on the AD effect with some contribu.ion of the u.steadiness effect. The contou. of the flow rate region is labeled and AD effects are compared with the variation of small intervals of time for a constant velocity when breathing is interru.ted for a negligible moment.

The steady flow behavior in terminal bronchu. of hu.an lu.g for cylindrical channel of porou. mediu. has been stu.ied. The governing equ.tions have been solved analytically and nu.erically for cylindrical channel. Finite difference method is incorporated to simu.ate the problem. The nu.erical resu.ts are compared with squ.re du.t channel for different parametric effect. It is observed that the flow rate is increased in cylindrical channel compared to squ.re du.t channel for the increasing valu. of pressu.e gradient, porosity and permeability. On the contrary, the flow rate is decreased in squ.re du.t channel compared to cylindrical channel for increasing valu. of viscosity. Flow rate in both channels is analyzed and compared for non-porou. mediu. also. It is observed that flow rate is increased very high in cylindrical channel compared to squ.re du.t channel for both mediu..
