Videos in Improving Farmers’ Innovation Capacity for Climate-Smart Forest and Agricultural Practices: An Experience of Madhupur Sal Forest in Bangladesh

Madhupur Sal forest is one of the major forests in Bangladesh which is also under intimidation of severe deforestation due to settlement of the ethnic people and encroachment for farming. However, deforestation is one of the major factors responsible for climatic change events like recurrent natural calamities and degradation of natural resources. Thus, a pilot project was taken in the forest area by Bangladesh Agricultural University to minimize carbon emission through introduction of low emission agricultural practices (vermi-compost and botanical pesticide) in crop production and to increase women’s participation in social forestry program. It also introduced improved cooker in the study area for reducing amount of fire wood for cooking. Video mediated extension approach was used to teach the people of the forest community regarding the consequences of climate change on their livelihoods. Findings showed that, project beneficiaries are now impressively aware on consequences of climate change issues. Around 75% of them are now using own made vermi-compost and botanical pesticide in agricultural production mixed with social forestry, while 42% of them are using improved cooker which has significantly reduced amount of fire wood for cooking. This is ultimately contributing in minimizing the rate of deforestation. However, the project initiatives have created alternate income opportunities of the forest community people through safe and organic cultivation of vegetables and fruits in the leased land. On the other hand, this social forestry programme will directly contribute in reducing consequences of climate change in the long run.

Nipah virus (NiV) is a highly infectious zoonotic pathogen that poses a significant threat to human and animal health. First identified in Malaysia in 1998, NiV has since caused several outbreaks in Southeast Asia, with sporadic cases reported in Bangladesh and India. The virus is primarily transmitted to humans through direct contact with infected animals, primarily fruit bats, or through the consumption of contaminated fruits and their juices. NiV infection presents a wide spectrum of clinical features, ranging from mild respiratory illness to severe encephalitis, with a high case fatality rate. The incubation period typically ranges from 4 to 14 days, during which patients develop fever, headache, myalgia, and respiratory symptoms such as cough and sore throat. As the disease progresses, neurological signs become prominent, including altered consciousness, seizures, and focal deficits. Severe cases may exhibit acute respiratory distress syndrome and multi organ failure. Laboratory findings often include lymphocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, and elevated liver enzymes. Diagnosis of NiV infection requires specialized laboratory testing, including reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and serological assays. Currently, no specific antiviral treatment exists for NiV infection, and management primarily focuses on supportive care. Prevention and control strategies encompass public health interventions, surveillance, and raising awareness among healthcare providers and the general population. The emergence and re-emergence of NiV highlight the urgent need for continued research, improved diagnostic capabilities, and the development of effective vaccines and therapeutics to mitigate the impact of this deadly virus.

Financial viability and conservation role of betel leaf based agroforestry:an indigenous hill farming system of Khasia community in Bangladesh

A study was conducted to investigate the cultural and financial management techniques of betel leaf based agroforestry system practiced in or near homegardens of Khasia community in Jaintapur Upazila in the district of Sylhet, *** Khasia is an educated community where 100% of Khasia people were literate, a stunning fact for this ethnic community in *** average family size in the study area was 7.68, with a ration of male and females of 141:*** homegardens of the Khasia are rich in species composi-tion, which 15 timber species, 22 horticultural species, six medicinal species, 13 annual crops including leafy vegetables, seven species of spices and five species of bamboo were identified along with betel *** Khasia is an economically prosperous community with the minimum family incomes of Tk 4 000 per month(Tk.70=1 US Dollar).Betel leaf based agroforestry is very common being a prevalent source of *** 95.45% of the households are involved in betel leaf *** mean annual income from one hectare of betel leaf plantation was estimated to be *** practice was proven to be a profitable business where the benefit cost ratio was calculated to be ***, the species composition in the betel leaf plantation area(the forest area once utilized by Khasia for shifting cultivation) was found to be very promising to play the significant role in conservation of biological diversity making the practice a sus-tainable agroforestry system.

Analysis of immune responses against H pylori in rabbits

AIM： To investigate the immunogenicity of H pylori proteins, to evaluate the production rate of anti H pylori IgG antibodies in relation to time and to demonstrate the fidelity of newly optimized in-house enzymelinked immunosorbent assay （ELISA） technique as an alternative for H pylori infection assay. METHODS： In the present study, 100 μg of formalinfixed H pylori whole cell antigens was injected into an experimental animal （New Zealand white female rabbit） intramuscularly on d 0, 16, 27 and 35. The first two doses were injected with adjuvants. On d 0, a serum sample was collected from the rabbit before immunization and this pre-immunized serum was used as a negative control for the whole study. To evaluate the immunogenic responses of the injected antigen, serum samples were collected from the rabbit at regular intervals up to d 42. The sera were analyzed using inhouse ELISA and Western blot techniques.RESULTS： The production of anti Hpylor/IgG antibodies in the rabbit in response to the injected antigen increased almost exponentially up to d 14 and after that it was maintained at the same level until the last day （d 42）. By analyzing the immune profiles of immunized sera, 11 proteins were identified to be immunogenic, among them 2 （approximately 100 kDa and 85 kDa） were most prominent. CONCLUSION： Analysis of the immune responses against pathogenic microorganisms like H py/ori is necessary for the development of various diagnostic and preventive approaches. The results of this experiment reveal that the formalin-fixed H pylori whole cell antigens injected into the rabbit are highly immunogenic. These prominent proteins （approximately 100 kDa and 85 kDa） might have higher immunogenic effects among humans infected with H pylori and some of these immunogenic proteins can be included in diagnostic approaches based on serology and also for vaccine formulation. The in- house ELISA is a promising alternative compared to invasive techniques.

该文以适用于低真空管道高速磁浮列车的无铁心直线感应悬浮电机为研究对象,针对其运行过程中可能存在的非均匀气隙工况,在直角坐标下建立该电机的磁场和电磁特性的三维解析模型。首先,介绍该直线感应悬浮电机的拓扑结构及其工作原理;其次,采用积分法求解得到直线感应悬浮电机初级的三维空间磁场分布函数,并对该磁场分布函数进行傅里叶级数转换,使电机初级三维磁场函数具有形式上连续统一的解析表达式;再次,基于二阶矢量磁位(second order vectorpotential,SOVP),提出无铁心直线感应悬浮电机可考虑任意气隙(均匀、不均匀)工况的三维解析模型,推导出悬浮力、牵引力、涡流损耗等电磁参数的解析表达式,并通过有限元法验证解析计算的准确性;最后,通过小型样机试验,来验证理论计算的合理性。

Tree assemblages and diversity patterns in Tropical Juri Forest,Bangladesh

Juri is a biodiversity-rich primary forest in Bangladesh, which remains ecologically unexplored. We identified tree species and examined the richness, alpha（a）diversity and floristic similarity patterns within the identified communities. Vegetation and environmental data were sampled in 120（0.04 ha） study plots. Tree communities were delimited by two-way indicator species analysis（TWINSPAN）. In total, 78 tree species of 35 families and58 genera were identified. TWINSPAN identified six tree communities： A—Tricalysia singularis; B—Kydia calycina-Castanopsis tribuloides; C—Polyalthia simiarum-Duabanga grandiflora; D—Ficus roxburghii; E—Artocarpus lacucha; F—Artocarpus lacucha. Mean richness, Shannon and Gini-Simpson indices were highest for the Polyalthia simiarum-Duabanga grandiflora community, while Ficus roxburghii showed lowest diversity. Significant differences（p = 0.05） in three diversity indices were recorded between Polyalthia simiarum-Duabanga grandiflora and Ficus roxburghii. Tree compositional similarity was greatest between Kydia calycina-Castanopsis tribuloides and Polyalthia simiarum-Duabanga grandiflora（0.712）.

Minimizing Distance Using Just-in-Time Teaching and Flipped Classroom

JiTT （Just-in-Time Teaching） and flipped classroom are two innovations in academia where high-tech and no-tech resources are blended to encourage more interaction and creativity among students. These two methods also help minimize the dependency on face-to-face lecture and make the class time more creative and effective. This study is the very first attempt of implementing these strategies in Bangladesh. It explores the prospect of JiTT and flipped classroom at tertiary level in Bangladesh. In the first part of this paper, recent studies on JiTT and flipped classroom are discussed to shed light on their effectiveness and problems. The latter part explains the data and research findings. Before collecting the data, JiTT and flipped classroom were used with 33 students of undergraduate level who were students of＂ELT Methodology＂ course. After the implementation of the methods, a questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data regarding their response to these two methods. The study reveals that JiTT and flipped classroom help cover more topics in a short time while enhancing students＇ interaction and participation. They make students come to the class prepared and reflect on their learning. Teachers can understand students need better and provide required feedback. The overall interaction among students and teachers can be improved using JiTT and flipped classroom since everyone is clear about each other＇s existing knowledge and learning objectives.

This study was undertaken to investigate oxidative stress tolerant mechanisms in chilli(Capsicum annuum L.)under drought genotypes through evaluating morphological,physiological,biochemical and stomatal *** genotypes were evaluated for their genetic potential to drought stress tolerant at seedling *** days old seedlings were exposed to drought stress induced by stop watering for the following 10 days and rewatering for the following one week as *** on their survival performance,two tolerant genotypes ***-10906 and BD-109012 and two susceptible genotypes ***-10902 and RT-20 were selected for studying the oxidative stress tolerance *** reduced root and shoot length,dry weight,ratio,petiole weight and leaf area in both tolerant and susceptible genotypes,and a higher reduction was observed in susceptible *** reduction of leaf area and photosynthetic pigments were also found in tolerant ***,tolerant genotypes showed higher recovery than susceptible genotypes after the removal of stress.A higher reduction of relative water content(RWC)may cause an imbalance between absorbed and transpirated water in susceptible *** accumulation of proline in tolerant genotypes might be helpful to for better osmotic maintenance than that in susceptible *** genotypes showed higher antioxidant activity as they showed DPPH radical scavenging percentage than the susceptible ***,closer stomata in tolerant genotypes than susceptible ones helped to avoid dehydration in tolerant ***,the above morphological,physiological,biochemical and stomatal parameters helped to show better tolerance in chilli under drought stress.

Creating Bengali Freebase Using Wikidata

Freebase is a large collaborative knowledge base and database of general, structured information for public use. Its structured data had been harvested from many sources, including individual, user-submitted wiki contributions. Its aim is to create a global resource so that people (and machines) can access common information more effectively which is mostly available in English. In this research work, we have tried to build the technique of creating the Freebase for Bengali language. Today the number of Bengali articles on the internet is growing day by day. So it has become a necessary to have a structured data store in Bengali. It consists of different types of concepts (topics) and relationships between those topics. These include different types of areas like popular culture (e.g. films, music, books, sports, television), location information (restaurants, geolocations, businesses), scholarly information (linguistics, biology, astronomy), birth place of (poets, politicians, actor, actress) and general knowledge (Wikipedia). It will be much more helpful for relation extraction or any kind of Natural Language Processing (NLP) works on Bengali language. In this work, we identified the technique of creating the Bengali Freebase and made a collection of Bengali data. We applied SPARQL query language to extract information from natural language (Bengali) documents such as Wikidata which is typically in RDF (Resource Description Format) triple format.
