Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy versus Ventriculo-Peritoneal Shunt for Infant Hydrocephalus

Introduction: Patients with hydrocephalus, which is the most pediatric neurological disorder, undergo Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion through third ventriculostomy or ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. Up to date, the optimal hydrocephalus treatment modality is not clear. Aim: We compared the outcome of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) versus ventriculo-peritoneal shunt (VP shunt) as a second surgical intervention in management of Infant hydrocephalus concerning success rate and complications. Patients and Methods: We conducted an observational study of 52 children with hydrocephalus (congenital or acquired) in whom CSF diversion was performed using either ETV or VP shunt in randomized control trial. Results: During the period examined, 52 children, 26 underwent ETV and 26 underwent VP shunt. The mean age was 11.0 ± 4.3 months in ETV and 11.3 ± 4.7 months in VP shunt. Postoperative infection in the ETV group was lower than in the VP shunt group (23.1% vs. 53.8% P = 0.045). Regarding operating time, In ETV group operation duration was 46.9 min and 64.3 min in the V-P shunt group (P = 0.13). There was no statistically significant difference between the two study groups regarding the rate of obstruction, change in occipital frontal circumference (OFC) or the need of revision surgery. One year survival for VP shunt group vs. ETV group was 46.2% vs. 65.4% respectively. Conclusion: ETV associated with lower rates of postoperative infection and shorter operation time with no significant difference in rates of obstruction, change in OFC and revision surgery in comparison to VP shunt.

In this manuscript,our goal is to introduce the notion of intuitionistic extended fuzzy b-metric-like spaces.We establish some fixed point theorems in this setting.Also,we plot some graphs of an example of obtained result for better understanding.We use the concepts of continuous triangular norms and continuous triangular conorms in an intuitionistic fuzzy metric-like space.Triangular norms are used to generalize with the probability distribution of triangle inequality in metric space conditions.Triangular conorms are known as dual operations of triangular norms.The obtained results boost the approaches of existing ones in the literature and are supported by some examples and applications.

Assessment of dielectric strength and partial discharges patterns in nanocomposites insulation of single-core power cables

Nanoparticles succeeded to enhance the dielectric properties of industrial insulation but the presence of voids inside the power cable insulation still leads to formation high electrical stress inside power cable insulation material and collapse.In this paper,the dielectric strength of new design nanocomposites has been deduced as experimental work done to clarify the benefit of filling nanoparticles with different patterns inside dielectrics.Also,it has been studied the effect of electrical stress distribution in presence of air,water and copper impurities with different shapes(cylinder,sphere and ellipse)inside insulation of single core.In simulation model,it has been used finite element method(FEM)for estimating the electrostatic field distribution in power cable insulation.It has been applied new strategies of nanotechnology techniques for designing innovative polyvinyl chloride insula-tion materials by using nanocomposites and multi-nanocomposites.Finally,this research succeeded to remedy different partial discharges(PD)patterns according to using certain types and concentrations of nanoparticles.

Sol-Gel γ-Al₂O₃ Nanoparticles Assessment of the Removal of Eosin Yellow Using: Adsorption, Kinetic and Thermodynamic Parameters

The adsorption behavior of eosin yellow (EY) from aqueous solution onto γ-Al2O3 nanoparticles in batch technique was studied. γ-Al2O3 NPs was prepared and characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD and FTIR analysis. The effect of pH, dosage of adsorbent, contact time, temperature, and the initial concentration of dye was investigated. The maximum amount of dye removal found about 99.36% at pH4, the adsorption dose 1g/L, with the initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L, and the temperature of 25°C, with contact time 120 min. The adsorption behavior of the eosin yellow dye is applicable to Langmuir isotherm model, with the maximum sorption capacity of 47.78 mg/g of γ-Al2O3. The kinetic data also described by the pseudo-second-order model with a correlation coefficient (0.9999), and the mechanism of the process showed a multi-linear steps and the intra-particle diffusion was not only rate controlling step. The adsorption process was endothermic with positive enthalpy of 121.8 kJ/mol, and showed spontaneous process with a mean free energy -5.19 kJ/mol, and increase randomness, 369.77 J/mol. k, at the adsorbent solution interface. The adsorption process was chemisorption in nature The activation energy estimated from Arrhenius and modified Arrhenius is 40.9 kJ/mol, 106.37 kJ/mol respectively. The sticking probability of EY onto Al2O3 NPs very high estimated from the value of S* < 1, (4.82E-19).

Determination of Full Energy Peak Efficiency of NaI(Tl) Detector Depending on Efficiency Transfer Principle for Conversion Form Experimental Values

In this work we calibrated the NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors (5.08 × 5.08 cm2 and 7.62 × 7.62 cm2) and the Full Energy Peak Efficiency (FEPE) for these detectors have been calculated for point sources placed at different positions on the detector axis using the analytical approach of the effective solid angle ratio. This approach is based on the direct mathematical method reported by Selim and Abbas [1,2] and has been used successfully before to calibrate the cylindrical, parallelepiped, and 4π NaI(Tl) detectors by using point, plane and volumetric sources. In addition, the present method is free of some major inconveniences of the conventional methods.

Knowledge and Attitude of Pregnant Women toward Elective Cesarean Section in Saudi Arabia

Background: The rate of deliveries by cesarean section (CS) is increasing worldwide. An elective cesarean section (ECS) is a cesarean section carried with or without a medical reason, in some cases choice by pregnant women. The number of women demanding for delivery by elective cesarean section is increasing in Saudi Arabia. Although CS is the commonest major surgery performed in Obstetrics throughout the world;there are still concerns about the knowledge and attitude of Saudi Pregnant women towards it. Methods: The design of this study was a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 206 pregnant women attending antenatal clinic during the third trimester, selected by convenience sampling method from Maternity and Children Hospital in Jeddah City in Saudi Arabia. Structured interview questionnaire was used in this study. Different statistical procedures were used for data analysis including percentages, mean, and mean percentages. Content validity and reliability were done. Results: The majorities (78.2%) of the pregnant women have adequate level of knowledge about ECS, 14.6% of them have moderate knowledge, and only 7.3% have inadequate knowledge. Also, 137 (66.5%) of pregnant women have negative attitude toward ECS, while 58 (28.2%) have positive attitude. Conclusion and recommendations: The study concluded that there was a good level of knowledge among pregnant women about ECS in most of the instrument questions in general;except in some areas such as the bad consequences of CS. On the other hand, the majority of the pregnant women had negative attitude toward ECS. Health care provider such as doctors, nurses and midwives should provide adequate knowledge to the pregnant women about consequence of cesarean section on the mother and child. Various interventions are recommended to decline unnecessary cesarean section. These interventions need to contain changes in attitude and correcting misperceptions among pregnant women to cesarean section and normal delivery during

Mental Health and Quality of Life of Disable Palestinian Children in the Gaza Strip

The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of mental health problems and quality of life among Palestinian disable children. The sample consisted of 391 disable Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip which was selected randomly from the data base of two NGOs working with such group of children. The age of children ranged from 6 - 18 years with mean age (11.73). Instruments: The children and adolescents demographic data were collected by questionnaire include sex, age, class, and place of residence, Gaza Child Health Study Scales (parents and children forms), and The Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory generic core (version 4.0) scale. The results showed that children reported mean conduct disorder was 1.33;oppositional disorder was 5;mean overanxious was 6.75;separation anxiety mean was 6.36;and depression was 7.57. There were statistically significant differences toward boys in depression. According to parents, mean conduct disorder mean was 1.94;mean oppositional disorder was 6.09;mean overanxious was 7.47;separation anxiety mean was 6.48;and mean depression was 9.6. The study showed that mean depression in boys was 10.4 compared to 8.9 in girls. There were statistically significant differences toward boys in depression. Parents of children with physical disabilities reported more overanxious problems in their children compared to other parents with other types of disabilities (vision, mental, and multiple). Also, parents of children with physical disability had more separation anxiety than other groups (mental and multiple disabilities). Quality of life of children was scored by children themselves;mean emotional functioning was 8.24;mean social functioning was 6.65;school functioning mean was 9.17;and cognitive functioning was 8.57. The study showed that mental health problems rated by children such as conduct disorder was positively correlated with emotional and cognitive functioning;oppositional disorder was correlated with emotional, social, and cognitive function;overanxious disorder was corre

Epidemiology of fatal cases associated with pandemic influenza reported in Yemen

Objectives: This study describes the incidence of all fatal cases associated with Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) in Yemen. It sets out to highlight the factors associated with poor prognosis *The authors declare that they have no competing interests. to enhance the implementation of prevention and control programs. Methods: The study is based on retrospective analysis of available data until 14 March 2010, as compiled by the disease control and surveillance team in Yemen. Results: Between 16 June 2009 and 14 March 2010, a total of 33 laboratory-confirmed death cases associated with pandemic influenza A (H1N1) were reported to the Diseases Control and Surveillance in the Ministry of Public Health and Population. During this period, a total of 6049 suspected influenza A (H1N1) cases were recorded. With this denominator, the case fatality rate (CFR) was 0.54%. During June through August, H1N1 confirmed cases were infrequently detected, including only 30;however, from September through December, over 200 confirmed cases were reported each month. Of the 33 cases recorded, 25 were male (76%) and 8 were female (24%), male to female ratio being 3:1. Overall median age of the death cases was 30.8 years (range 1 - 55). The most common diagnosis upon admission was pneumonia. Out of the deaths, twenty five (75.8%) had no documented underlying diseases. Chronic cardiovascular disease (9.1%) was the most commonly reported disease and 2 deaths (6.1%) were recorded as pregnant women. Conclusions: The most common diagnosis upon admission was pneumonia. Chronic cardiovascular diseases were the most commonly reported underlying conditions, while the most identified risk factor was pregnancy. These findings should be taken into consideration, when vaccination strategies are employed.

Background: Complications linked to postpartum & pregnancy are one of the major causes of female death. In order to understand the causes of complications and encourage women to take sufficient action in order to receive emergency treatment, a critical step should therefore be taken to minimize complications related to pregnancy, in order to ensure the safety of both women and newborns. Aim of the work: Evaluate the effectiveness of the education programs for pregnant women on obstetric danger signs in rural areas and help minimize the incidence of pregnancy loss and comorbidities. Background:Skin and soft tissue infections are frequent.Candidiasis and Aspergillosis are the most common cutaneous fungal infections.Yemeni alum(Aluminium Potassium Sulphate)is a natural mineral with antifungal and antibacterial properties.Objective:This study aimed to confirm Yemeni alum’s antifungal effectiveness against selected fungal strains and develop useful topical formulations.Methods:Using different alum concentrations,we prepared twenty-three formulations,including four non-adjusted aqueous solutions,eight adjusted pH aqueous solutions,eight glycerite solutions,and three Oil/Water cream formulations.Then,we examined the antifungal activity against the suggested fungus.The animal skin irritation test evaluated the local skin sensitivity reactions that might happen upon using the formulations we pre-pared on the intact animal’s skin.Additionally,this study also included six weeks of stability testing to estimate the expected shelf life(t90)of the selected formulations.Results:Alum exerted antifungal effect against Candida albicans,Aspergillus niger,and Aspergillus flavus.The animal’s skin was not irritated by any of the formulations examined.The 5%alum aqueous solution and the 10%alum Oil/Water cream exhibited promising results among all tested formulations.The approximate formulation’s shelf-lives(t90)were 2 and 1.52 years with alum content(%)ranging between 105.75%to 106.02%,respectively.Conclusion:Based on the results we found,10%alum Oil/Water cream is a promising formulation for large-scale manufacture.
