Protective effects of Balanites aegyptiaca extract, melatonin and ursodeoxycholic acid against hepatotoxicity induced by methotrexate in male rats

Objective: To compare the degree of ameliorative effects of Melatonin(Mel), Ursodeoxycholic acid(UDCA) and Balanites aegyptiaca(BA) against hepatotoxicity induced by MTX for one month. Methods: Eighty adult male rats(Sprague Dawely) weighing(190±10g), were randomly divided into eight equal groups: Control, MTX, Mel, BA, UDCA, MTX+Mel, MTX+BA, MTX+UDCA. Liver function biomarker enzymes, liver tissue oxidative stress parameters, together with total antioxidant capacity and tumor necrosis factor(TNF-α) were determined. Histopathological and immunohistochemistry examinations for TNF-α were also done. Results: MTX showed significant increase in alanine transaminase(ALT), aspartate transaminase(AST), alkaline phosphatase(ALP), gamma glutamyl transferase(GGT), total and direct bilirubin, as well as TNF-α levels, oxidized glutathione(GSSG), malodialdehyde(MDA) and nitric oxide(NO). whereas, total protein, albumin, total antioxidant capacity, reduced glutathione(GSH), glutathione peroxidase(GPx), glutathione reductase(GR), glutathione S-transferase(GST), superoxide dismutase(SOD) and catalase(CAT) levels were significantly decreased in MTX treated group. These alterations were improved by Mel and BA treatment, whereas no improvement was noticed in UDCA treatment. Conclusions: BA may be as promising as Mel in the hepatoprotection against MTX toxicity through their antioxidant and radical scavenging activities. In addition, it is not recommended to co-administer UDCA with MTX as it enhanced inflammation and damage to the liver.

Since 1960, the steppe regions of North Africa have been subject to an increasing desertification, including the degradation of traditional pastures. The initially dominant species （Artemisia herba-alba, Lygeum spartum and Slipa tenacissima） declined and were progressively replaced by other species （Atractylis serratuloides and Salsola vermiculata） that are more tolerant to the new conditions. It is not clear whether these changes are due to anthropogenic reasons or climatic determinism. We have carried out a statistical analysis of the climate to detect putative rainfall changes during the 20th century in the Algerian steppes based on data from 9 meteorological stations, including 2 Saharan stations （el Oued and Touggourt）, 3 pre-Saharan stations （Biskra, Laghouat and Ain Sefra） and 4 steppe stations （Djelfa, Saida, M6ch6ria and E1-Bayadh） located in the arid high plains, which represent the bioclimate diversities of the region. Previous studies suggested that significant rainfall changes for the 20th century only had records in the south of the Oran region. Most of the studies, however, looked at restricted territories over limited periods, and did not integrate the rainiest period 2004-2014. Our work is designed to integrate all the longest time series of meteorological data available for the steppe regions of Algeria. Our results confirm the spatial rainfall distribution （significant rainfall changes only recorded in the southwestern region） evidenced by previous studies, and reveal a decreasing rainfall gradient from northeastern to southwestern Algeria. Moreover, the results reveal a trend of significant decrease of rainfall in the southern Oran region, marked by two drought periods in 1980- 1985 and 1999-2003. However, with the exception of the southwestern region, rainfall overall has not declined since the beginning of the 20th century. Al-Halabi is an intriguing ophthalmologist who invented numerous surgicalinstruments for treating various eye diseases. The illustrations of such instrumentsin his invaluable book “Kitab Al-Kafi fi Al-Kuhl” reflect his willingness toteach. Moreover, he included in his book a magnificent illustration of theanatomical structure of the eye. The book reflects Al-Halabi’s medical practice andteaching and shows several advanced medical techniques and tools. Hisinvaluable comments reflect his deep experimental observations in the field ofophthalmology. The current article provides proof that Al-Halabi is one of ourearly biomedical engineers from more than 800 years ago. Al-Halabi represents aring in the chain of biomedical engineering history. His surgical instrumentsrepresent the biomechanics field. Al-Halabi should be acknowledged among thebiomedical engineering students for his various contributions in the field ofsurgical instruments.

Background: Neuroblastoma (NB) is remarkable for its wide spectrum of clinical behavior and biological characteristics in relation to outcome. The use of aggressive therapy, including autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and the addition of isoretionin (cis-Retinoic Acid/cis-RA), has increased survival rates of patients with advanced disease. Methods: Pediatric 271 newly diagnosed high risk NB patients were prospectively enrolled into the study. Patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy of alternating cycles: [cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine (CAdO)] and [etoposide, carboplatin]. Intensification courses of “ICE” (ifosfamide, carboplatin, and etoposide) regimen were administered to patients with bone marrow (BM) residual infiltration. Whenever safely feasible, complete surgical resection or debulking of the primary tumor was attempted for patients achieving partial response. eligible patients underwent HSCT, while radiation therapy to the primary and metastatic sites, as well as maintenance with cis-RA was given for 6 months. Results: The median age of our patients was 2.8 years with male to female ratio of 1.65:1. At 4 years, the overall and event free survivals were 33.7% and 23.3% for the entire group under study, with significantly higher rates (42.7% and 35.6%, respectively) for HSCT patients (n = 94;p 0.001). The outcome was also significantly correlated with response to induction therapy, pathological subtype, as well as other variables. Conclusion: Myeloablative therapy followed by stem cell rescue is regarded as the most important goal of high risk NB treatment to improve survival till present. Each of consolidation HSCT, post induction disease status, as well as international neuroblastoma pathology classification (INPC) subtype was an independent predictive variable of survival. BACKGROUND Healthy vestibular system adjusts balance during static and dynamic *** is important for normal development(standing up and walking).Vestipulopathies(central and peripheral)are common complications of diabetes in adult *** studies are scare in children with type 1 diabetes(T1D).AIM To assess saccular function of otolith organ in children with T1D and predictors for its *** Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential(cVEMP)was used for objective *** The study included 40 patients(boys=15;girls=25).Patients had mean age of 13.63±1.50 years,duration of diabetes of 5.62±2.80 years,frequent attacks of diabetic ketoacidosis(55%)and hypoglycemia(30%),hyperlipidemia(20%),hypertension(12.5%)and peripheral neuropathy(40%).Dizziness was found in 10%.Compared to healthy children(n=25),patients had prolonged cVEMP P1 and N1 latencies and reduced P1-N1 *** cVEMP abnormalities were found in 60%(vs 25%for unilateral abnormalities).Higher frequencies and severe vestibulopathies were found with chronic diabetes of>5 years,hemoglobin A1c values>7%,frequent diabetic ketoacidosis and hypoglycemic attacks and presence of *** analyses showed that predictors for prolonged P1 latencies and reduced P1-N1 amplitudes were only chronic diabetes(>5 years){odds ratio(OR)=2.80[95%confidence interval(CI):1.80–5.33],P=0.01;OR=3.42(95%CI:2.82–6.81)}and its severity(hemoglobin A1c>7%)[OR=3.05(95%CI:2.55–6.82),P=0.01;OR=4.20(95%CI:3.55–8.50),P=0.001].CONCLUSION Dysfunction or injury of the saccular macula and its pathways is prevalent in children with *** glycemic control is important to prevent diabetes related vestipulopathies.

In the present work, the corrosion behavior of base and welded API5L X-52 carbon steel coupons in synthetic ground water solution NS-4 was studied. Subsequently, the morphology and composition of the corrosion product deposits were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Based on weight loss as well as Tafel’s measurements, increasing the sulfide ions content above 0.4 mM, had an inhibition effect on the corrosion behavior of carbon steel. According to EDAX analyses, increasing of sulfide concentration from 0.4 to 4 mM Na2S, the Fe/S ratio decreased from 12.02 at 0.4 mM to 2.6 at 4 mM Na2S.

Leafhopper Cicadulina bipunctata is represented the main insect as a pathogen for phytoplasma disease occurring by insect-transmitted plant viruses in date palm orchards. Therefore, it is important to investigate the potential effect of some insecticides against such insect. The adults of leafhopper C. bipunctata were collected from date palm orchards in Alhasa, Eastern province, Saudi Arabia. Three insecticides from different classes--beta-cyfluthrin （pyrethroids）, imidacloprid （neonicotinoids） and abamectin （natural compounds）--have been evaluated in vivo against adults C. bipunctata. This stage was exposed to residual film of various concentrations of each insecticide on transparent plastic cups using a Potter precision laboratory spray tower. Bioassay test showed that both beta-cyfluthrin and imidacloprid caused 100% mortality by 500 ppm at 24 h after treatment, whereas abamectin gave the same mortality by 50 ppm at the same time. Toxicity values revealed that abameetin was the most potent insecticide compared with beta-cyfluthrin and imidacloprid, where the lethal concentrations LC50 and LC95 were 24.58 ppm and 116.73 ppm at 3 h after treatment, respectively. Therefore, abamectin can be a possible candidate to be applied on date palm or ground grass by the Ministry of Agriculture after successful field experiments.

Hospital facilities use a collection of heterogeneous devices, produced by many different vendors, to monitor the state of patient vital signs. The limited interoperability of current devices makes it difficult to synthesize multivariate monitoring data into a unified array of real-time information regarding the patients state. Without an infrastructure for the integrated evaluation, display, and storage of vital sign data, one cannot adequately ensure that the assignment of caregivers to patients reflects the relative urgency of patient needs. This is an especially serious issue in critical care units (CCUs). We present a formal mathematical model of an operational critical care unit, together with metrics for evaluating the systematic impact of caregiver scheduling decisions on patient care. The model is rich enough to capture the essential features of device and patient diversity, and so enables us to test the hypothesis that integration of vital sign data could realistically yield a significant positive impact on the efficacy of critical care delivery outcome. To test the hypothesis, we employ the model within a computer simulation. The simulation enables us to compare the current scheduling processes in widespread use within CCUs, against a new scheduling algorithm that makes use of an integrated array of patient information collected by an (anticipated) vital sign data integration infrastructure. The simulation study provides clear evidence that such an infrastructure reduces risk to patients and lowers operational costs, and in so doing reveals the inherent costs of medical device non-interoperability.

In this paper,waste clay was cured with ethyl acetate to obtain treated clay(TC),which was modified with gallic acid to obtain a low-cost sorbent that was characterized by EDX,SEM,and FTIR ***(Ⅵ)adsorption was achieved using the batch adsorption method on the TC and gallic acid-modified treated clay(GMTC).The maximum uptakes of U(Ⅵ)on TC and GMTC were 37.2 and 193.0 mg/g,*** U(Ⅵ)adsorption kinetics on the TC and GMTC sorbents were well-fitted by the pseudo-second-order mechanism,and the adsorption equilibrium followed the Langmuir *** optimum parameters were applied to el Sela leach solution for uranium recovery.
