Endoscopic Aspects of.Caustic Injuries of.the Upper Gastrointestinal Tract in Parakou, Benin Republic: A Multicenter Study

Objective: Caustic ingestion is a medico-surgical emergency. The objective of.this study is to describe endoscopic lesions of.the upper gastrointestinal tract secondary to caustic ingestion in Parakou, Benin Republic. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective and descriptive cross-sectional study. The study was multicenter in the gastrointestinal endoscopy units of.the Teaching Hospital Center of.Borgou-Alibori and the Military Teaching Hospital of.Parakou. It covered the period f.om July 2015 to October 2021. This included any patient who ingested a caustic substance and perf.rmed a gastroscopy in one of.the two endoscopy units. The variables studied were: socio-demographic data, the nature of.the caustic substance ingested, the time between the caustic ingestion and the perf.rmance of.gastroscopy and injuries of.the upper gastrointestinal tract. Results: Out of.the 24 patients included, 19 were men, i.e. a sex ratio of.3.8. Their average age was 25.54 ± 12.04 years with extremes of.6 and 50 years. f.ve subjects (20.83%) were under the age of.18 and the ingestion was accidental in them. Among the 19 patients aged at least 18 years, caustic ingestion was voluntary in 14 (73.68%). The caustic substance ingested was either a base (sodium hydroxide or caustic soda) or an acid (sulf.ric acid) in 14 cases (58.33%) and 10 cases (41.67%), respectively. The time between the caustic ingestion and the perf.rmance of.gastroscopy varied f.om 1 to 1095 days. The endoscopic lesions objectif.ed were: stenosis (37.5%), ulcerations (29.17%), necrosis (20.83%), or erythema (12.25%). Conclusion: In Parakou, caustic ingestion, usually bases, is of.en voluntary in adult men. Endoscopic lesions were of.en ulcerative but sometimes necrotic.

Introduction: Irritable bowel syndrome is the most common f.nctional gastrointestinal disorder. The objective of.this work is to contribute to improving the medical f.llow-up of.medical students at the University of.Parakou through a study of.irritable bowel syndrome. Study Methods: This was a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study with prospective data collection. Data were collected f.om medical students f.om May 2018 to July 2018 using a pre-established questionnaire. Sampling was probabilistic using a two-stage survey. The diagnostic tools were: Rome IV criteria, Bristol scale and HAD (hospital anxiety and depression) scale. Data analysis was perf.rmed using Epi Inf. 7.***.3.14 sof.ware. CDC. Results: Thirty-two (7.55%) of.the 424 students included had irritable bowel syndrome. Out of.the 32 students with IBS, 24 (75%) were f.male. Their average age was 21.38 ± 2.39 years. f.r 24 students (75%), the symptoms occurred at the same time as exam preparation or the intense course period. Of.the 32 students with IBS, 1 (3.12%) was regularly physically active. In this series, 8 students (28%) consulted a doctor f.r their symptoms. The f.ctors associated with this syndrome were f.male sex (p = 0.022), sleep disorders (p = 0.008) and the presence of.a doubtf.l depression (p = 0.021). Absenteeism due to irritable bowel syndrome was noted in 18 (56.25%) students. Conclusion: Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition among medical students in Parakou. Support f.r better management of.psychological disorders could improve the quality of.lif. of.these students.

Goal: To describe the clinical and immunological characteristics in the HIV-inf.cted patients at the antiretroviral treatment initiation. Methods: This was a descriptive and retrospective study on the cohort of.the patients living with HIV f.llowed at Parakou teaching hospital f.om the 1st January 2004 to the 31st December 2012. Persons under the age of.15 and the pregnant women have been excluded f.om the study. Results: The active f.le was composed of.988 patients under antiretroviral treatment. They were 339 men and 649 women. The sex ratio was 0.52. The average age of.the patients was 35.49 ± 9.72 years. The immunodef.ciency was prof.und with 57.65% of.patients at the stage 3 of.WHO and 42.35% at the stage 4. Opportunistic inf.ctions at the antiretroviral treatment initiation were dominated by oral candidiasis (30.16%), the diarrhea (20.45%) and zona (11.03%). Conclusion: HIV inf.ction touched young adults who consult at an advanced stage of.immunodef.ciency.

Introduction: Helicobacter pylori (Hp) inf.ction is the most common bacterial inf.ction in the world. World Health Organization has classif.ed this bacterium as a Class I carcinogen. The objective of.this work is to study the epidemiological, clinical and pathological aspects of.Helicobacter pylori inf.ction among adults in a digestive endoscopy unit and the pathological anatomy service of.Parakou. Patients and Methods: This was a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study conducted f.om January 2020 to September 2020 in the digestive endoscopy unit and pathological anatomy service at the Departmental University Hospital Center of.Borgou. Patients aged 18 years and older, who had undergone a gastroscopy with biopsies and who gave their oral consent were included. Three antral biopsies and two f.ndic biopsies were perf.rmed. The search f.r Hp was done under an optical microscope af.er staining with hematoxylin eosin. Results: A total of.151 patients were included and 51.66% were inf.cted with Hp. Their average age was 40.63 ± 15.32 years and the sex ratio was 0.9. Epigastric pain was the most reported symptom (71.01%). Endoscopically, the prevalence of.erythematous gastropathy was 98.72%. The study of.chronic Hp gastritis according to Sydney system had shown signs of.activity in 100% of.patients with Hp and glandular atrophy in 83.33% of.them. Intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia accounted f.r 24.35% and 29.48% of.cases, respectively. f.ctors associated with Hp inf.ction were: absence of.proton pump inhibitor intake prior to examination, absence of.handwashing with soap and water bef.re eating, erythematous aspect of.gastritis on gastroscopy, absence of.intestinal metaplasia of.the f.ndus, active and chronic aspects of.gastritis on histology. Conclusion: The f.equency of.Hp inf.ction in hospitals among adults admitted to the Digestive Endoscopy Unit of.Parakou is high. To reduce this prevalence, it will be necessary to act on the f.ctors identif.ed.

Availability, Accessibility and Contribution of.Inf.nt f.ours to the Diet of.Children Aged 6-59 Months in Benin

This study assesses the nutritional composition as well as the availability and af.ordability of.inf.nt f.our f.und on the market and in the households of.Benin. To do that assessment, a two-step cross-sectional survey based on f.od ethnography methods was used. A total of.61 marketplaces were visited in seven towns and rural districts as part of.the availability and af.ordability survey, while 400 children (aged 6 to 59 months) were surveyed to track the uses of.inf.nt f.ours at the household level. The results obtained reveal that pre-manuf.ctured inf.nt f.our is sold more in urban areas (Cotonou, Porto-Novo and Parakou) than in rural ones. The average inf.nt f.ours price did not vary (p = 0.985) in any given year (regardless of.abundance or lean periods) nor does it vary (p = 0.133) f.om one point of.sale to another (drugstore or supermarkets). However, the average price is f.und to be expensive considering the purchasing power of.the households surveyed. On the other hand, the amount of.ingredients used in the production of.the f.our types f.und on the market complies with the recommendations of.the Codex Alimentarius, unlike the homemade ones. Pre-manuf.ctured inf.nt f.our is f.und to be outside of.the economic reach of.most households (92%) who rely heavily on the homemade ones to f.ed their children. In light of.the above, public authorities should help improve geographic access and pricing af.ordability to quality inf.nt f.our f.r low-income households in urban and remote areas. Moreover, awareness should be raised among mothers relative to the importance of.complementary f.eding through education on good nutrition practices.
