A microfluidic biosensor for the diagnosis ofchronic wasting disease

Cervids are affected by a neurologic disease that is always fatal to individuals and has population effects. This disease iscalled chronic wasting disease (CWD) and is caused by a misfolded prion protein. The disease is transmitted viacontact with contaminated body fluids and tissue or exposure to the environment, such as drinking water or *** CWD diagnosis depends on ELISA screening of cervid lymph nodes and subsequent immunohistochemistry(IHC) confirmation of ELISA-positive results. The disease has proven to be difficult to control in part because ofsensitivity and specificity issues with the current test regimen. We have investigated an accurate, rapid, and low-costmicrofluidic microelectromechanical system (MEMS) biosensing device for the detection of CWD pathologic prions inretropharyngeal lymph nodes (RLNs), which is the current standard type of CWD diagnostic sample. The deviceconsists of three novel regions for concentrating, trapping, and detecting the prion. The detection region includes anarray of electrodes coated with a monoclonal antibody against pathologic prions. The experimental conditions wereoptimized using an engineered prion control antigen. Testing could be completed in less than 1 hour with highsensitivity and selectivity. The biosensor detected the engineered prion antigen at a 1:24 dilution, while ELISA detectedthe same antigen at a 1:8 dilution. The relative limit of detection (rLOD) of the biosensor was a 1:1000 dilution of aknown strong positive RLN sample, whereas ELISA showed a rLOD of 1:100 dilution. Thus, the biosensor was 10 timesmore sensitive than ELISA, which is the currently approved CWD diagnostic test. The biosensor’s specificity andselectivity were confirmed using known negative RPLN samples, a negative control antibody (monoclonal antibodyagainst bovine coronavirus BCV), and two negative control antigens (bluetongue virus and Epizootic hemorrhagicdisease virus). Splenic Vein Thrombosis as a Complication of Hypertriglyceridemia-Induced Acute Pancreatitis

Background: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an extensive inflammation condition that may lead to local and systemic complications, ranging from mild edematous peripancreatic fluid collection to multiorgan failure and death. Aim: To report the case of the patient with the complications that happened and the presented management. Case presentation: A 37-year-old female patient presented with acute necrotizing pancreatitis secondary to hypertriglyceridemia. During hospitalization, the patient developed severe ileus with splenic vein thrombosis. She was treated conservatively with Intravenous (IV) fluids, insulin infusion, anticoagulant, pain relief medication and antibiotics. Discussion: This case of pancreatitis induced splenic vein thrombosis (PIVST) was treated supportively with outstanding improvement of the patient’s symptoms. Conclusion: Acute pancreatitis can be complicated by splenic vein thrombosis that can be self-limited and treated with conservative measures.

Considerable research has demonstrated how effective requirements engineering is critical for the success of software *** engineering has been established and recognized as one of the most important aspects of software engineering as of *** is noteworthy to mention that requirement consistency is a critical factor in project success,and conflicts in requirements lead to waste of cost,time,and effort.A considerable number of research studies have shown the risks and problems caused by working with requirements that are in conflict with other *** risks include running overtime or over budget,which may lead to project *** the very least,it would result in the extra expended *** studies have also stated that failure in managing requirement conflicts is one of the main reasons for unsuccessful software projects due to high cost and insufficient *** prior research studies have proposed manual techniques to detect conflicts,whereas other research recommends automated approaches based on human ***,there are different resolutions for conflicting *** previous work proposed a scheme for dealing with this problem using a novel intelligent method to detect conflicts and resolve them.A rule-based system was proposed to identify conflicts in requirements,and a genetic algorithm(GA)was used to resolve *** objective of this work is to assess and evaluate the implementation of the method of minimizing the number of conflicts in the *** methodology implemented comprises two different *** first stage,detecting conflicts using a rule-based system,demonstrated a correct result with 100% *** evaluation of using the GA to resolve and reduce conflicts in the second stage also displayed a good result and achieved the desired goal as well as the main objective of the research.

Application of GIS-based SCS-CN method in West Bank catchments,Palestine

Among the most basic challenges of hydrology are the prediction and quantification of catchment surface runoff. The runoff curve number （CN） is a key factor in determining runoff in the SCS （Soil Conservation Service） based hydrologic modeling method. The traditional SCS-CN method for calculating the composite curve number is very tedious and consumes a major portion of the hydrologic modeling time. Therefore, geographic information systems （G/S） are now being used in combination with the SCS-CN method. This paper assesses the modeling of flow in West Bank catchments using the GIS-based SCS-CN method. The West Bank, Palestine, is characterized as an arid to semi-arid region with annual rainfall depths ranging between 100 mm in the vicinity of the Jordan River to 700 mm in the mountains extending across the central parts of the region. The estimated composite curve number for the entire West Bank is about 50 assuming dry conditions. This paper clearly demonstrates that the integration of GIS with the SCS-CN method provides a powerful tool for estimating runoff volumes in West Bank catchments, representing arid to semi-arid catchments of Palestine.

Experimental Study on Compressive Strength of Recycled Aggregate Concrete under High Temperatur

This research aims to study the effect of elevated temperature on the compressive strength evolution of concrete made with recycled *** building concrete samples were collected from four different sites in Saudi Arabia,namely from Tabuk,Madina,Yanbu,and *** concretes were crushed and recycled into aggregates to be used to make new concrete *** samples were tested for axial compressive strength at ages 3,7,14,and 28 days at ambient *** of the same concrete mixes were subjected to the elevated temperature of 300°C and tested for compressive strength *** experimental result reveals that the recycled aggregate concrete samples have good quality at ambient and elevated temperatures and are considered fairly close to the concrete made with natural ***,recycled aggregate concrete at high temperatures showed higher strength degradation than natural aggregate concrete,but with differences that do not exceed 5%to 10%.The concrete samples made from recycled coarse aggregates also reached the design *** can be considered acceptable,considering the high variation in the concrete’s thermal response found in the literature.

Does Immediate Reconstruction of Postextraction Lost Buccal Plate Reduce the Chances of Implant Surface Exposure after Crown Placement?

Objective: To investigate if immediate reconstruction of fresh extraction sockets’ lost buccal wall would reduce the possibilities of implant surface exposure and improve the treatment predictability. Materials and Methods: A retrospective chart review of Healthy patients harboring periodontally compromised anterior teeth that were planned for extraction and subsequent implant therapy were the target of our study. All the sockets included witnessed loss of the buccal bone plate. Seventy-two anterior sockets were grafted with xenogenic grafts to reconstruct such defects immediately after the extractions. 9 to 13 months later, the alveolar ridges were surgically exposed and implants were placed. Results: All the surgical sites did not show any labial plate thinning, dehiscence, or fenestration at the time of implant placement. Moreover, no gingival recession and implant metal show was noticed up to 39 months post crown placement. Conclusion: Immediate reconstructions of lost buccal plate in fresh extraction sockets reduces the chances of implant surface exposure up to two years post crown placement.

Naso Alveolar Cleft Reconstruction: Does Patients’ Age Play a Factor in Postoperative Complication Rate?

Purpose: The purpose of this report is to compare the outcome of unilateral alveolar cleft reconstruction (ACR) in patients aged 6 - 8 years versus older more comprehending patients aged 9 - 12 years. Materials and Methods: A chart review (from March 2006 to June 2010) was conducted of patients who had alveolar cleft reconstruction using anterior iliac crest bone graft. All the cases included are non syndromic healthy patients whom had unilateral alveolar cleft and were operated for the first time. A total of 49 healthy patients were included in the study. Twenty-four had their surgery between the age of 6 and 8 (Group A), and twenty-five had theirs between 9 and 12 (Group B). The postoperative recovery and complications were compared between the two groups. Results: In group A, 16% (n = 4) showed minimal wound dehiscence while 8% (n = 2) had a minor wound infection due to food particles wedged in the wound. In Group B, 20% (n = 5) of the patients presented with minimal wound dehiscence, while 12% (n = 3) had minor wound infection due to food particles wedged in the wound. No significant difference was found between the two groups using Fisher’s exact test, two-tailed p-value >0.05. Conclusion: Age factor was not found to be a factor contributing to ACR complication rate.

Effects of Lanthanum on Redox Systems in Plasma Membranes of Casuarina equisetifolia Seedlings Under Acid Rain Stress

The effects of lanthanum on some redox system(PMRS) properties of the plasma membrane(PM) vesicles from Casuarina equisetifolia seedlings under artificial acid rain(pH 4.5)stress were studied. The results show that there are NADH oxidase and EDTA Fe 3+ reductase, and nitrate reductase in the seedling PM, and they have different responses to soaking seeds for 8 h in a series of LaCl 3 solution. The NADH oxidase activities and the Nitrate reductase activities can be stimulated when La 3+ concentrations is in the range of 50～200 mg·L -1 , but their activities are inhibited or fluctuate by the higher La 3+ concentrations. The EDTA Fe 3+ reductase activities can be stimulated by La 3+ concentrations in the range of 50～400 mg·L -1 . The research also revealed that La 3+ reduces the relative permeability of membranes and have the function in protecting membranes under acid rain stress by the way of inhibiting the leakage of electrolyte.
