Determination of Optimum Seed Rate of Hybrid Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Varieties in Mat-Type Seedling Raising for Mechanical Transplanting

Rice is the most important and crucial to ensuring food and dietary energy security in most developing countries and is the staple food of more than half of the world’s population. This study was conducted to identify the seed rate of hybrid rice varieties for mechanical transplanting during Boro (irrigated dry season), 2021-22 season at BRRI research field, Gazipur. Slender grain type BRRI hybrid dhan3, BRRI hybrid dhan5, Ishpahani hybrid dhan6, and BRRI dhan89 were used in the study. The same growth medium was used to establish mat-type seedlings on plastic trays (280 × 80 × 25 mm) at seed rates of 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120 g∙tray−1. Walk-behind type 04 rows rice transplanter (Daedong, model-DP 488) was used during transplanting in the field at the set of the plant to plant spacing of 140 mm while line-to-line spacing was fixed to 300 mm. The result depicted that regardless of the variety, seedling density increased linearly as seed rate increased, except for the 21 days following sowing. However, the seedling density of BRRI dhan89 decreased after the seed rate of 100 g∙tray−1 due to mortality. The seedling height of the BRRI hybrids dhan5 and Ishpahani hybrid dhan6 was significantly higher than that of the BRRI hybrid dhan3 and BRRI dhan89. After 21 days, the seedling height decreased significantly with the increase in seed rate. For the seed rates of 100, 110, and 120 g∙tray−1, identical numbers of hills per unit area and plants per hill were observed. On the other hand, regardless of the variety, the percentage of missing hills considerably decreased with the increased seed rate. The yield of the BRRI hybrid dhan5 variety was significantly higher at the seed rates of 100 and 110 g∙tray−1, although the yield of the Ishpahani hybrid dhan6 variety was comparable. Electrical Load Forecasting Using Fuzzy System

To cope with the demand and supply of electrical load of an interconnected power system of a country, we need to forecast its demand in advance. In this paper, we use a fuzzy system to forecast electrical load on short-term basis. Here, we consider temperature, humidity, seasons of a year and time segments of a day as the parameters, which govern the demand of electrical load. For each of the parameter, we use several membership functions (MFs) and then apply the Mamdani rule on MFs and the output is determined by using the centroid method. Finally, the surface plot reveals the real scenario of the load demand. The difference between actual load and the output of the fuzzy system is found as +1.65% to -13.76%. The concept of the paper can be applied in interconnected power system of Bangladesh to reduce power loss, especially when generation is higher than the demand.

Comparison of seldinger and trocar techniques in the percutaneous treatment of hydatid cysts

AIM To comparatively evaluate Seldinger and Trocar techniques in the percutaneous treatment of hydatid disease. METHODS Trocar and Seldinger techniques were used for 49 and 56 cysts, respectively, among 106 hydatid cysts in 88 patients. The number of males and females were 22 and 66, respectively with a mean age of 44.9 years(range, 15-87). Follow-up studies included cyst diameter, cyst contents, and morphological changes inthe cyst wall, local recurrence, and secondary invasion, using ultrasound, computerized tomography and chest X-rays. RESULTS The positive criteria of healing were a decrease in cyst diameter, progressive solidification of the cyst contents, and disappearance of the cyst. Local recurrence was defined as an increase in the cyst diameter and contents, and appearance of daughter cysts in the primary cavity, while secondary dissemination was defined as the appearance of new cysts outside the treated cyst. Mean duration of follow-up was 19.23 mo(range, 18-26 mo). Follow-up results demonstrated that no significant differences were present between the Trocar and Seldinger techniques in the percentage of decrease in the cyst volume, rate of early complications, local recurrence and secondary dissemination(P = 0.384, 0.069, 0.215 and 0.533, respectively). CONCLUSION There are no differences between the Seldinger and Trocar techniques that gain entry to the cyst cavity in terms of the efficacy of the treatment and the rates of early and late complications.

Costing Principles of a Denim Pant

Denim pant is a significant prospect for the RMG sector of Bangladesh with an enormous future. The pricing is the most important factor obtainable in the global competitive market without having any suspicion. It is difficult to exist in the apparel market without providing lowest costing of garment. The study focuses on the entire factor that is directly related to the FOB cost of a basic denim pant where includes fabric cost, trims & accessories cost, storing, cost of making charge, washing cost, testing cost, commercial cost and profit is shown chronologically. All the calculations of the study were done on the basis of an industrial frame work and both primary and secondary data were collected from six different denim pant manufactures and exporters. The study provided convinced principle of fabric consumption, thread consumption, CM calculation, required poly;cartoons calculations and costing were done very carefully. The study also provides potential wash and testing, so that the total price ranges can be contained as well as demonstrating total FOB cost. The manufacturers, exporters, retailer and consumers of denim pant will get the apparent method of costing and its parameter.

Gadolinium Neutron Capture Therapy： Future Treatment of Brain Cancer Using Nuclear Techniques

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy （BNCT） has been under investigation for some time and several applications to terminal brain cancer patients have been made at different institution in the US （MIT, Mass General Hospital, Japan, the Netherland, Sweden, Finland, and others. All together about 300 patients were treated. Using the very large neutron capture cross section by 10B, one taps the tumor with a compound containing Boron. This is followed by bombarding the tumor with termal neutrons which splits the boron nucleus into an alpha particle and 6Li. These charged particles lose their energy within the size of the tumor and thus destroy it. The Gadolinium Neutron Capture Therapy （GNCT） is similar to BNCT, with the advantage that 157Gd has a huge neutron capture cross section （about 120 Mb compared to the neutron ＋ boron cross section of about 4 Kb）. In this talk I give a description of the physics of these therapies and discuss their future.

Chaotic Behavior of the Compound Nucleus and Other Mesoscopic Systems

It is well established that physical systems exhibit both ordered and chaotic behaviors. The atomic nucleus is such a system, where both collective and non-collective degrees of freedom are excited and studied using the shell model for the former and Random Matrix Theory for the latter. The chaotic behavior of nanostructure such as open quantum dots has been confirmed experimentally and discussed exhaustively theoretically. This is manifested through random fluctuations in the electronic conductance. What useful information can be extracted fi＇om this noise in the conductance？ In this contribution we shall address this question. In particular, we will show that the average maxima density in the conductance is directly related to the correlation function whose characteristic width is a measure of energy -- or applied magnetic field -- correlation length. The idea behind the above has been originally discovered in the context of the compound nucleus, a mesoscopic system. Our findings are directly applicable to graphene.

A brief review on natural fiber used as a replacement of synthetic fiber in polymer composites

The use of composites in different sectors has become inevitable due to the enhancement in properties, reduction in the manufacturing cost and suitability to several applications. Among different classifications, polymeric composites are mainly focused on their use as structural components and the selection and composition of reinforcement play a vital role in determining the characteristics of the composite. Although composites are developed with man-made reinforcement in the beginning stage, in the present situation, natural reinforcements have proved excellent results in terms of properties. Hence, nowadays researches are mainly focused on the use of different natural fibers in different forms as reinforcements in polymeric composite. This work presents a brief overview on the properties of natural fiber and natural fiber reinforced composites which is an emerging area in polymer science. Interests in natural fiber is reasonable due to the advantages of these materials compared to others, such as synthetic fiber composites, including low environmental impact and low cost and support their potential to be used. Moreover, the disadvantage of the synthetic and fiber-glass as reinforcement, the use of natural fiber reinforced composite gained the attention of the young scientists, researchers, and engineers and are being exploited as a replacement for the conventional fiber such as glass, aramid, carbon etc. Natural fibers have been proven alternative to synthetic fiber in transportation such as automobiles, railway coaches and aerospace, military, building, packaging, consumer products and construction industries for ceiling paneling, partition boards etc. However, in development of these composites, some drawbacks have also emerged. In this paper, it has been tried to overview all of this together.
