Climate change-induced heat stress combines two challenges:high day-and nighttime temperatures,and physiological water deficit due to demand-side drought caused by increase in vapor-pressure *** is one of the major factors in low productivity of maize in rainfed stress-prone environments in South Asia,affecting a large population of smallholder farmers who depend on maize for their sustenance and *** International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center(CIMMYT)maize program in Asia,in partnership with public-sector maize research institutes and private-sector seed companies in South Asian countries,is implementing an intensive initiative for developing and deploying heat-tolerant maize that combines high yield potential with resilience to heat and drought *** the integration of novel breeding tools and methods,including genomics-assisted breeding,doubled haploidy,fieldbased precision phenotyping,and trait-based selection,new maize germplasm with increased tolerance to heat stress is being developed for the South Asian *** a decade of concerted effort has resulted in the successful development and release of 20 high-yielding heat-tolerant maize hybrids in CIMMYT genetic *** public–private partnerships,eight hybrids are presently being deployed on over 50,000 ha in South Asian countries,including Bangladesh,Bhutan,India,Nepal,and Pakistan.

Improved Attribute Chain Sampling Plan for Darna Distribution

Recently,the Darna distribution has been introduced as a new lifetime *** two-parameter Darna distribution represents is a mixture of two well-known gamma and exponential distributions.A manufacturer or an engineer of products conducts life testing to examine whether the quality level of products meets the customer’s requirements,such as reliability or the minimum *** this article,an attribute modified chain sampling inspection plan based on the time truncated life test is proposed for items whose lifetime follows the Darna *** plan parameters,including the sample size,the acceptance number,and the past lot result of the proposed sampling plan,are determined with the help of the two-point approach considering the acceptable quality level(AQL)and the limiting quality level(LQL).The plan parameters and the corresponding operating characteristic functions of a new plan are provided in tabular form for various Darna distribution ***,a few illustrated examples are presented for various distribution *** usefulness of the proposed attribute modified chain sampling plan is investigated using two real failure time *** results indicate that the proposed sampling plan can reduce the sample size when the termination ratio increases for fixed values of the producer’s risk and acceptance ***,the proposed attribute modified chain sampling inspection plan is recommended to practitioners in the field.

Bearing capacity of foundations on rock slopes intersected by non-persistent discontinuity

Rocks encountered in foundations of heavy structures are invariably intersected by discontinuities(joints).In the past,several studies have been performed by researchers to incorporate the effect of fully persistent joints in the assessment of the load-carrying capacity of ***,in the field,the joints are non-persistent,and an assumption of full persistency will underestimate the ***,Shaunik&Singh have studied the influence of non-persistency,number of joint segments and discontinuity orientation on the strength behaviour of rock specimens(Shaunik and Singh,2019).Bell’s approach can be used to obtain the bearing capacity of shallow foundations placed in jointed *** the present study,results of the experimental work(Shaunik and Singh,2019)conducted by Shaunik&Singh have been used to suggest expressions by extending Bell’s approach for computing bearing capacity of the foundation placed near the crown of a rock *** to use design charts are also presented for field ***,a real-life problem from Indian Garhwal Himalayas is considered,and the approach suggested in this study is utilised to obtain the bearing capacity of a bridge foundation as a function of uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of intact rock,joint friction,spacing and orientation of joint,nonpersistency and number of joint segments.

Several constructions in the field of civil engineering quite often need to deal with *** behaviour of rock intersected by a discontinuity or a set of discontinuities has been a topic of keen interest for engineering *** popular attributes of discontinuities that have been given due importance are their frequency,orientation and surface ***-persistency,however,has been given little *** article presents an experimental study wherein focus has been made on the effect of non-persistency of the joint on the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of a model rock for various geometries such as orientation,discontinuity length ratio and number of joint *** applicability of single plane of weakness theory(SPWT)to assess the strength of jointed specimens has also been *** has been noticed that SPWT captures the strength behaviour only for a narrow range of discontinuity *** an improvement,an approach is suggested by extending concepts of degree of persistence and joint factor to have a better understanding towards strength behaviour of rocks intersected by non-persistent joints.

Impact of binary blends of biodiesels on fuel quality,engine performance and emission characteristics

The incessant pressure of energy requirements by the growing global populace has led to the exploration of unconventional methods to produce renewable and sustainable *** these,biodiesel is most suited to the present needs of eco-friendly standards to keep the atmosphere free from residual *** fuel-modification methods were developed over a couple of decades to make biodiesel suitable for diesel *** the present research,Jatropha curcas biodiesel and waste-cooking-oil(WCO)biodiesel were used to craft a unique binary blend to obtain desirable fuel properties and operational suitability for the diesel *** blend with 80% WCO biodiesel and 20% *** biodiesel,which had the most suitable fuel properties,was tested on a four-stroke single-cylinder vertical diesel *** emissions and operational parameters were analysed and compared with *** results of the study indicated that engine emissions for binary blend,carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbon emissions were highly reduced,and carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide(NO_(x))emissions increased relative to *** full load,NO_(x) emission was found to be 51.32% higher than that from diesel and 3.8% lower than that from WCO *** performance showed that for the binary blend,at full load,the brake-specific fuel consumption was 396.82 g/kWh,which was 15.26% higher,and the brake thermal efficiency was 22.7%,which was 2.74% lower than regular diesel *** present study suggests that the binary blend of *** biodiesel and WCO biodiesel can be a promising approach towards advancements in the fuel properties of biodiesels.

Seismic analysis of structures with a fractional derivative model of viscoelastic dampers

Viscoelastic dampers are now among some of the preferred energy dissipation devices used for passive seismic response *** evaluate the performance of structures installed with viscoelastic dampers,different analytical models have been used to characterize their dynamic force deformation *** fractional derivative models have received favorable attention as they can capture the frequency dependence of the material stiffness and damping properties observed in the tests very ***,accurate analytical procedures are needed to calculate the response of structures with such damper *** paper presents a modal analysis approach,similar to that used for the analysis of linear systems,for solving the equations of inotion with fractional derivative terms for arbitrary forcing functions such as those caused by earthquake induced ground *** uncoupled modal equations still have fractional derivatives,but can be solved by numerical or analytical *** numerical and analytical procedures are *** procedures are then used to calculate the dynamic response of a multi-degree of fleedom shear beam structure excited by ground motions. Numerical results demonstrating the response reducing effect of viscoelastic dampers are also presented.

Periodontitis is the chronic destructive disease of the periodontium （Gums） caused by host bacterial interactions. The effect of such host bacterial interactions in oral cavity also evokes a systemic response. Numerous studies have found common mechanisms of destruction for periodontal diseases and other chronic diseases like diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, respiratory diseases, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Oral colonization by respiratory pathogens appears to be a risk factor for development of respiratory diseases and oral interventions aimed at reducing oral bacterial count have resulted in reduced incidence of these reparatory illness. This reflects the importance of oral hygiene among patients with respiratory illness. This review highlights the association between periodontal diseases and respiratory diseases.

The Adsorption Properties of TEMPO Oxidized Cellulose against the Mixture of Methylene Blue and Rhemazol Yellow FG

TEMPO/NaOCl/NaBr treatment significantly increased the number of negative charges on the cellulose *** concentrations of NaOCl,5 and 30 mmol/g of cellulose,were used in this *** number of carboxyl groups in the two cellulosic samples oxidized using TEMPO/NaOCl/NaBr was 0.5160 and 1.8461 mmol/g of cellulose,*** oxidized cellulose samples treated with 5 and 30 mmol/g NaOCl exhibited higher crystallinity,at 81.15%and 80.14%,respectively,compared to untreated cellulose,which had a crystallinity of 75.95%.The pH effect indicated that the highest adsorption capacity for methylene blue was achieved under alkaline conditions(pH 9),while the highest adsorption capacity for rhemazol yellow FG was achieved under acidic *** kinetic model of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose for methylene blue and rhemazol yellow FG conformed to the pseudo-second-order *** initial concentration parameter revealed that the isotherm model for the adsorption of methylene blue and rhemazol yellow FG by TEMPO-oxidized cellulose conformed to the Langmuir *** dye removal efficiencies for methylene blue and rhemazol yellow FG using TEMPOoxidized cellulose(30 mmol/g)were approximately 80.17%and 59.52%,*** results demonstrate that TEMPO/NaOCl/NaBr-oxidized samples can effectively separate cationic and anionic dye ***,the use of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose showed good regeneration capability,maintaining more than 95%of its adsorption capacity after 8 cycles.
