Comparison of Ontario’s roundwood and recycled fibre pulp and paper mills’performance using data Envelopment analysis

The pulp and paper industry converts roundwood and recycled fibre,collected from wastepaper into printing and writing papers,and other specialty grades of *** pulp and paper mills in Ontario have been facing extreme competitive pressures,which have affected their performance leading to several mill *** purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the relative performance of three types of Ontario’s pulp and paper mills(using all fibre,only roundwood fibre,and only recycled fibre).This study uses bootstrap data envelopment analysis in analyzing and comparing the operational efficiency of the Ontario’s pulp and paper mills,with 224 sample data observations over a period of 17 *** results indicate low levels of overall technical and managerial efficiencies in the pulp and paper mills using recycled *** results of the study highlight that the pulp and paper industry needs to divert their attention to streamlining the manufacturing processes,reducing costs,improving raw material usage,and making capital investments in the new and improved technology,in order to improve the operational efficiency and competitiveness of the Ontario’s pulp and paper *** pulp and paper mills using recycled fibre require huge capital investments,especially for installing the latest de-inking *** results of this study provide policy makers with detailed performance analysis so that future input resources can be reallocated to improve the performance of the pulp and paper mills in Ontario.

Defining Velocity and Acceleration Ranges for Time-Motion Analysis from a 7-Sided Game in U11 Soccer Players Using Global Positioning System Devices:A Case Study

The aims of this study were(1)to define speed and acceleration thresholds from youth match activity of soccer players and(2)to analyze the activity performed by young soccer players during a match using GPS devices and according to these *** U11 soccer players from a professional club participated in a 7-sided match being equipped with global positioning system(GPS)devices(sampling frequency 5 Hz)to measure the speed of each *** Kernel Density Esti-mate(KDE)was used to observe the occurrences of *** range of velocities was described by a distribution curve,from which the speed and acceleration thresholds for each category of movement were defined and time–motion analysis of the match was *** model with 4 Gaussian laws was the best when using the Akaike Information Criterion(AIC).In this study,the thresholds defined for each category of movement were:standing(<0.1 km/h),walking(0.1–5.6 km/h),slow running(5.7–7.7 km/h),fast running(7.8–12.7 km/h)and sprint(≥12.8 km/h).Acceleration thresholds were calculated to define movement considered as a sprint for each category of movement:standing(0.3 m/s^(2)),walking(0.66 m/s^(2)),slow running(1.01 m/s^(2))or fast running(0.97 m/s^(2)).All the acceleration thresholds were significantly different from each other(P<0.001)with large effect sizes,excepting the comparison between slow and fast running(P=0.41)with a small effect *** U-11 soccer players,time–motion analysis may be performed according to five categories of *** study has also defined sprint and acceleration thresholds for this category of age.

Energy efficiency in a water supply system:Energy consumption and CO_2 emission

This paper presents important fundamentals associated with water and energy efficiency and highlights the importance of using renewable energy sources. A model of multi-criteria optimization for energy efficiency based on water and environmental management policies, including the preservation of water resources and the control of water pressure and energy consumption through a hybrid energy solution, was developed and applied to a water supply system. The methodology developed includes three solutions：（1） the use of a water turbine in pipe systems where pressures are higher than necessary and pressure-reducing valves are installed, （2） the optimization of pumping operation according to the electricity tariff and water demand, and （3） the use of other renewable energy sources, including a wind turbine, to supply energy to the pumping station, with the remaining energy being sold to the national electric grid. The use of an integrated solution （water and energy-） proves to be a valuable input for creating benefits from available hydro energy in the water supply system in order to produce clean power, and the use of a wind source allows for the reduction of energy consumption in pumping stations, as well as of the CO2 emission to the atmosphere.

Naturally Nitrogen-Doped Biochar Made from End-of-Life Wood Panels for SO_(2) Gas Depollution

Reconstituted wood panels have several advantages in terms of ease of manufacturing,but their shorter life span results in a huge amount of reconstituted wood panels being discarded in sorting centers ***,the most common approach for dealing with this waste is *** this study,reconstituted wood panels were converted into activated biochar through a two-step thermochemical process:(i)biochar production using pilot scale fast pyrolysis at 250 kg/h and 450℃;and(ii)a physical activation at three temperatures(750℃,850℃ and 950℃)using an in-house activation furnace(1 kg/h).Results showed that the first stage removed about 66% of the nitrogen from the wood panels in the form of NO,NH3,and trimethylamine,which were detected in small amounts compared to emitted CO_(2).Compared to other types of thermochemical conversion methods(e.g.,slow pyrolysis),isocyanic acid and hydrogen cyanide were not detected in this *** second stage produced activated biochar with a specific surface area of up to 865 m^(2)/g at 950℃.The volatile gases generated during activation were predominantly composed of toluene and *** two-step process resulted in nitrogen-rich carbon in the form of pyrrolic and pyridinic *** biochars were then evaluated for their SO_(2) retention performance and showed an excellent adsorption capacity of up to 2140 mg/g compared to 65 mg/g for a commercial activated carbon(889 m^(2)/g).End-of-life reconstituted wood panels and SO_(2) gas are problematic issues in Canada where the economy largely revolves around forestry and mining industries.

Effect of phosphatation and calcination on the environmental behaviour of sediments

Dredging operations produce considerable quantities of materials, to be managed and this opens an opportunity for valorization in civil engineering. However, the contamination of the dredged sediment has become a major problem to solve. The major contaminants are heavy metals and organic compounds This study focuses on the use of phosphoric acid(H3 PO4) to stabilize heavy metals from sediments an destroy organic matter by calcination at 650 °C with a goal of using sediments in roadworks. Severa studies have been conducted in this field. The stabilized materials obtained have been used in civ engineering. The main purpose of this work is to discuss the environmental behavior of marine sedimen treated by phosphatation and calcination. Two types of phosphoric acids were used. The p H dependenc leaching test has been used as the basic characterization to evaluate the effect of the type of phosphori acid on the metals behavior in a valorization scenario. The standard leaching test and the Toxicit Characteristic Leaching Procedure(TCLP) were conducted as compliance tests. In regards of the obtaine results, the environmental assessment has also shown a reduction in the availability of targeted heav metals in alkaline environment whatever the type of acid used for treatment. This opens opportunitie for co-valorization.

Analysis of Compression Resistance and Oil Adsorption Capacity of Cellulose/NaOH Cryogels

This work aimed at analyzing the petroleum adsorption capacity and the compressive strength of cellulose cryogels produced with the addition of 4 and 8%(w/w)sodium hydroxide(NaOH).Cryogels were produced from a 1.5%(m/m)suspension of cellulose microfibers,which originated from Pinus elliotti,in distilled *** addition of NaOH increased the compression strength of cryogel by 30% when compared to cryogel without the *** to the 50% decrease in volume,the cryogel FLNB-8h(8%NaOH)has its petroleum adsorption capacity decreased in average by 58%,whereas the FLNB-4(4%NaOH)cryogel had it only by 14%.The cellulose suspension which provided the best results for the properties of the cryogels tested had a 4%concentration of NaOH.

Infliximab to treat severe ulcerative colitis

A 48-year-old female with severe ulcerative colitis refractory to conventional therapy was referred to our facility for management. The patient showed extensive ulcerative colitis since the age of 20 years and had failed therapy with 5-aminosalicylic acid agents and azathioprine. The disease remained active despite treatment with steroids and cyclosporine. The clinical and endoscopic parameters were consistent with severe disease. Infectious precipitants were ruled out. Given the severity of the disease and in order to avoid a colectomy, we started the patient on infliximab therapy. A dramatic clinical and endoscopic response was observed and she remained in remission at the end of a 1-year follow-up period. We discuss findings in the literature regarding the use ofinfliximab therapy in patients with ulcerative colitis who have failed steroids and cyclosporine.

Efficacy of Gold Nanoparticles against Nephrotoxicity Induced by Schistosoma mansoni Infection in Mice

Objective In this study, the ameliorative effects of gold nanoparticles （gold NP） on the renal tissue damage in Schistosoma mansoni （S. mansoni）-infected mice was investigated. Methods High-resolution transmission electron microscopy was used for the characterization of NP. The gold NP at concentrations of 250, 500, and 1000 μg/kg body weight were inoculated into 5. mansoni-infected mice. Results The parasite caused alterations in the histological architecture. Furthermore, it induced a significant reduction in the renal glutathione levels; however, the levels of nitric oxide and malondialdehyde were significantly elevated. The parasite also managed to downregulate KIM-I, NGAL, MCP-1, and TGF-8 mRNA expression in infected animals. Notably, gold NP treatment in mice reduced the extent of histological impairment and renal oxidative damage. Gold NP were able to regulate gene expression impaired by 5. Mansoni infection. Conclusion The curative effect of gold NP against renal toxicity in 5. mansoni-infected mice is associated with their role as free radical scavengers.

Impact of microbial self-induced anaerobiosis fermentation(SIAF)on coffee quality

The fermentation of natural(NC)and pulped coffee(PC)was performed with a conventional method(platform)and under self-induced anaerobic fermentation(SIAF).Of the 12 samples analyzed during the fermentation process,the highest temperature was obtained by the SIAF method(30.5℃ for NC and 29.67℃ for PC)with 87 h of *** compounds(36 samples)were evaluated by high-performance liquid *** in the SIAF method contributed to the maximum amount of citric acid(2.534 mg/g)in pulped coffee and acetic acid(6.04 mg/g)and lactic acid(2.533 mg/g)in *** was the primary chemical class detected,followed by ketones and *** coffees(12 samples)were evaluated five times and classified as specialty coffees(>80 points)following Specialty Coffee Association(SCA)*** pulped coffee processed by the SIAF method showed a 2.83-point increase in the sensory score compared to the conventional ***,the SIAF method is accessible to producers,contributes to coffees with differentiated sensory profiles,and increases beverage quality.
