Effect of natural and synthetic fibers reinforcement on California bearing ratio and tensile strength of clay

Use of environmentally friendly approaches with the purpose of strengthening soil layers along with finding correlations between the mechanical characteristics of fiber-reinforced soils such as indirect tensile strength(ITS)and California bearing ratio(CBR)and as well as the evaluation of shear strength parameters obtained from the triaxial test would be very effective at geotechnical construction *** research was aimed at investigating the influence of natural fibers as sustainable ones including basalt(BS)and bagasse(BG)as well as synthetic polyester(PET)fibers on the strength behavior of clayey *** this end,the effects of various fiber contents(0.5%,1%and 2%)and lengths(2.5 mm,5 mm and 7.5 mm)were experimentally *** conducting ITS and CBR tests,it was found that increasing fiber content and length had a significant influence on CBR and ITS ***,2%of 7.5 mm-long fibers led to the largest values of CBR and *** CBR values of soil reinforced with PET,BS,and BG fibers were determined as 19.17%,15.43%and 13.16%,*** ITS values of specimens reinforced with PET,BS,and BG fibers were reported as 48.57 kPa,60.7 kPa and 47.48 kPa,*** results of the triaxial compression test revealed that with the addition of BS fibers,the internal friction angle increased by about 100%,and with the addition of PET fibers,the cohesion increased by about 70%.Moreover,scanning electron microscope(SEM)analysis was employed to confirm the *** relationship between CBR and ITS values,obtained via statistical analysis and used for the optimum design of road pavement layers,demonstrated that these parameters had high correlation *** outcomes of multiple linear regression and sensitivity analysis also confirmed that the fiber content had a greater effect on CBR and ITS values than fiber length.

Evolutionary algorithm for optimization of multilayer coatings

In this paper, a new evolutionary algorithm, the well-known imperialist competition algorithm, is proposed for optimizing the optical thin-films. In this method, the process is modeled of the competition between countries as imperialists and their colonizing of others as colonies. This algorithm could be an appropriate alternative to some of the more popular algorithms for optimizing the optical thin-films for good performance. The polarizer and edge filter for example are designed by using the imperialist competition algorithm method and the results are compared with those from two optimization high-performance methods： the genetic algorithm and differential evolutionary algorithm. Based on these results,the performance of the imperialist competition algorithm method shows that this algorithm is not sensitive to the change of its parameters and it can be an important advantage for quickly achieving a global optimal point. On the other hand the results show a better ratio of P-polarization transmittance to S-polarization transmittance in the design of a 1540-nm polarizer, which is more appropriate than the results from the other two methods. In the second design, an edge filter with a lower number of layers and more uniform bandpass spectrum than the counterparts of those methods is obtained. These results indicate that the imperialist competition algorithm is a robust method for optical thin-film designs.

Simultaneously energy production and dairy wastewater treatment using bioelectrochemical cells： In different environmental and hydrodynamic modes

A successful design, previously adapted for treatment of complex wastewaters in a microbial fuel cell （MFC）, was used to fabricate two MFCs, with a few changes for cost reduction and ease of construction. Performance and electrochemical characteristics of MFCs were evaluated in different environmental conditions （in complete darkness and presence of light）, and different flow patterns of batch and continuous in four hydraulic retention times from 8 to 30 h. Changes in chemical oxygen demand, and nitrate and phosphate concentrations were evaluated. In contrast to the microbial fuel cell operated in darkness （D-MFC） with a stable open circuit voltage of 700 mV, presence of light led to growth of other species, and consecutively low and unsteady open circuit voltage. Although the performance of the MFC subjected to light （L-MFC） was quite low and unsteady in dynamic state （internal resistance = 100 Ω, power density = 5.15 W.m-3）. it reached power density of 9.2 W.m-3 which was close to performance of D-MFC （internal resistance = 50 d, power density = 10.3 W.m-3）. Evaluated only for D-MFC, the coulombic efficiency observed in batch mode （30%） was quite higher than the maximum acquired in continuous mode （9.6%） even at the highest hydraulic retention time. In this study, changes in phosphate and different types of nitrogen existing in dairy wastewater were investigated for the first time. At hydraulic retention time of 8 h, the orthophosphate concentration in effluent was 84% higher compared to influent. Total nitrogen and total Kjeldahl nitrogen were reduced 70% and 99% respectively at hydraulic retention time of 30 h, while nitrate and nitrite concentrations increased. The microbial electrolysis cell （MEC）, revamped from D-MEC, showed the maximum gas production of 0.2 m3 H2·m-3·d-1 at 700 mV applied voltage.

Floods and earthquakes are the most common natural disasters,causing significant damage and casualties in urban *** academic research has focused on assessing cities'ability to withstand these natural disasters,there is a lack of established frameworks for evaluating resilience against multiple *** research integrates the earthquake and flood resilience indicators to create a comprehensive resilience assess-ment *** study integrated seismic and flood resilience indicators and categorized them into 27 *** also used the DEMATEL(Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory)method to determine the significance of clusters and prioritize *** research identified 13 cause clusters and 14 effect clusters of indicators for seismic and flood ***‘response capacity'cluster has the most impact on seismic and flood resilience,while the‘transportation and accessibility'cluster is the most affected *** article presents a framework for evaluating flood and seismic resilience and makes suggestions for future research.

Phosalone-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in the colon: evaluation and treatment

AIM: To investigate the side effects of phosalone on intestinal cells and to evaluate benefits of ellagic acid(EA) as a ***: In order to conduct an in vivo study, a rat model was used. The rats were divided into ten groups based on the materials used in the experiment and their dosage. The first group was fed normally. The second group was administered EA through gavage. Next Four groups were given(1/3, 1/5, 1/10, 1/20) LD50 phosalone; an organophosphorus compound. The last four groups received(1/3, 1/5, 1/10, 1/20) LD50 phosalone and of EA. After one month, the rats were sacrificed and their colon cells were examined to evaluate the level of inflammation, proteins and oxidative stress ***: The results of this research show that phosalone elevates oxidative stress and changes the level of tumor necrosis factor-a(TNF-α), interlukin-6β(IL-6β) and nuclear factor(NF)-κB proteins. EA administration reduced phosalone toxicity and changed oxidative stress and inflammatory markers for all phosalone doses. Overall changes in reduction of TNF-α(230.47 ± 16.55 pg/mg protein vs 546.43 ± 45.24 pg/mg protein, P < 0.001), IL-6β(15.85 ± 1.03 pg/mg protein vs 21.55 ± 1.3 pg/mg protein, P < 0.05), and NF-κB(32.47 ± 4.85 pg/mg protein vs 51.41 ± 0.71 pg/mg protein, P < 0.05) manifest that the efficacy of EA is more viable for 1/3 LD50 dose of phosalone. Furthermore, EA is effective to counteract the negative outcomes of oxidative stress. When EA was used to treat 1/3 LD50 of phosalone's side effects, it improved the level of ACh E activity(48.5% ± 6% vs 25% ± 7%, P < 0.05), TTM(0.391 ± 0.008 mmol/L vs 0.249 ± 0.032 mmol/L, P < 0.05), FRAP(46.04 ± 5.005 μmol/L vs 18.22 ± 1.9 μmol/L, P < 0.01) and MPO(0.222 ± 0.019 U/mg protein vs 0.387 ± 0.04 U/mg protein, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This research highlights that EA is effective to alleviate the side effects of phosalone by reducing the level of oxidative stress and inflammatory proteins.
