Lead stabilization in a polluted calcareous soil using cost-effective biochar and zeolite amendments after spinach cultivation

Biochar has been shown to be an effective organic soil amendment for the in-situ immobilization of lead(Pb).Little research has been done on the effects of biochar and zeolite interactions on Pb immobilization in contaminated calcareous ***,the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different levels of zeolite(2%and 4%,weight:weight)and biochars(3%,weight:weight)prepared from green compost(GB),poultry manure(PB),and municipal waste(MB)on the content of Pb in spinach shoots and Pb stabilization in a greenhouse experiment conducted using a Pb-contaminated calcareous *** of GB and PB significantly decreased the Pb mobility factor(MF)from 2.8%to 4.6%and the cumulative Pb release(diethylenetriamine pentaacetate(DTPA)extraction)from 16.8%to 20.1%in the calcareous soil,which were further enhanced by the combined addition of zeolite,with Pb MF reduction from 4.4%to 8.4%and cumulative Pb release reduction from 24.8%to 28.6%.The enhancement of soil Pb immobilization was attributed to the properties of the amendments,such as high pH,ash content,and phosphorus content(10.5^(-1)1.0,390-435 g kg^(-1),and 2.5-4.3 g kg^(-1),respectively).Results of the soil Pb sequential extraction and Pb release kinetics were highly and significantly correlated with spinach shoot Pb *** chemical data showed that the application of MB with 4%zeolite was the most effective treatment for immobilizing Pb(8.4%reduction in Pb MF and 28.6%reduction in cumulative DTPA-extractable Pb),which is in agreement with the results of the spinach shoot Pb(89.0%reduction in Pb uptake).

Outcomes and long-term survival of coronary artery surgery:The controversial role of opium as risk marker

AIM To study survival in isolated coronary artery bypass graft(CABG) patients and to evaluate the impact of preoperative chronic opium consumption on long-term *** Cohort of 566 isolated CABG patients as Tehran Heart Center cardiac output measurement was conducted. Daily evaluation until discharge as well as 4- and 12-mo and 6.5-year follow-up information for survival status were fulfilled for all patients. Long-term 6.5-year overall and opium-stratified survival, adjusted survival curves based on opium consumption as well as possible predictors of all-cause mortality using multiple cox regression were determined by statistical *** Six point five-year overall survival was 91.8%; 86.6% in opium consumers and 92.7% in non-opium consumers(P=0.035). Patients with positive history of opium consumption significantly tended to have lower ejection fraction(EF), higher creatinine level and higher prevalence of myocardial infarction. Multiple predictors of all-cause mortality included age, body mass index, EF, diabetes mellitus and cerebrovascular accident. The hazard ratio(HR) of 2.09 for the risk of mortality in opium addicted patients with a borderline P value(P=0.052) was calculated in this model. Further adjustment with stratification based on smoking and opium addiction reduced the HR to 1.20(P=0.355).CONCLUSION Simultaneous impact of smoking as a confounding variable in most of the patients prevents from definitive judgment on the role of opium as an independent contributing factor in worse long-term survival of CABG patients in addition to advanced age, low EF, diabetes mellitus and cerebrovascular accident. Meanwhile, our findings do not confirm any cardio protective role for opium to improve outcome in coronary patients with the history of smoking. Further studies are needed to clarify pure effect of opium and warrant the aforementioned findings.

To design a propeller for ship power plant,the interaction between ship hull and propeller must be taken into *** main concern is to apply the wake effect of ship stern on the propeller *** this paper,a coupled BEM(Boundary Element Method)/RANS(Renolds-Averaged Navier−Stokes)solver is used to simulate propeller behind the hull in the self-propulsion *** motivation of this work is to develop a practical tool to design marine propulsion system without suffering long computational *** unsteady boundary element method which is also known as panel method is chosen to estimate the propeller *** wakes are treated using a time marching wake alignment ***,a RANS code coupled with VoF equation is developed to consider the ship motions and wake field effects in the problem.A coupling algorithm is developed to interchange ship wake field to the potential flow solver and propeller thrust to the RANS *** on the difference between hull resistance and the propeller thrust,a PI controller is developed to compute the propeller RPM in every time *** of the solver is carried out using the towing tank test report of a 50 m oceanography research *** factor and trust deduction coefficient are estimated ***,the wake rollup pattern of the propeller in open water is compared with the propeller in real wake field.

Color and Gloss Changes of a Lignin-Based Polyurethane Coating under Accelerated Weathering

The purpose of this research study was to investigate the properties of polyurethane coatings based on lignin *** this purpose,the prepared coatings were applied to pine wood surfaces and weathered ***,color and gloss of the coatings were measured before and after the weathering *** emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM)micrographs prepared from the coatings showed that the average size of nano-particles in the polyurethane substrate was approximately 500 *** magnetic resonance(13C-NMR)spectroscopy showed that strong urethane bonds were formed in the nano-lignin-based *** calorimetric analysis(DSC)test revealed that the glass-transition temperature(Tg)of lignin nanoparticles modified with diethylenetriamine(DETA)was 112.8℃ and Tg of lignin nano-particles modified with ethylenediamine(EDA)was 102.5℃,which is lower than the Tg of un-modified lignin(114.6℃)and lignin modified with DETA(126.8℃)and lignin modified with EDA(131.3℃).The coatings modified with lignin nano-particles had a greater change in *** lignin nano-particles in the modified coating are trapping hydroxyl radicals which reduces photoactivity and yellowing of the polyurethane by about 3 times compared to unmodified polyurethane *** weathering test,the nano-lignin-based coating had a rougher surface with a lower contact angle(0.78°)compared to the unmodified polyurethane coating(0.85°).

A thermo-mechanical simulation for the stability analysis of a horizontal wellbore in underground coal gasification

The stability analysis of horizontal wells is essential for a successful underground coal gasification(UCG)*** this paper,a new 3D coupled thermo-mechanical numerical modeling is proposed for analyzing the stability of UCG horizontal *** this model,the effect of front abutment stresses,syngas pressure,syngas temperature and thermal stresses is considered to predict the mud weight window and drilling mud pressure during UCG *** results show that the roof caving in UCG panel has a greatest impact on the stability of horizontal ***,when the time of coal gasification is increased,the well convergence increases and for more stability it is necessary to increase the drilling mud *** research was carried out on the M2 coal seam in Mazino coal deposit(Iran).The results showed that the mud weight window for horizontal well drilling is between 0 and 33 *** appropriate stress for the maximum stability of the horizontal well,taking all the thermal and mechanical parameters into account,is 28 *** suggested numerical method is a comprehensive and consistent way for analyzing the stability of horizontal wells in UCG sites.

Examining the Effect of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Dracaena cinnabari on Sex Hormones and Ovarian and Uterine Tissues of Rats

Introduction: Dracaena cinnabari is considered a rich source of phytochemicals used widely in traditional medicine. In the present study, the effect of D. cinnabari hydraulic extract on the reproductive system of female rats was investigated. Methods: The samples were randomly divided into four groups(six samples in each group), including three treatment groups and one control group, and all samples were kept at the same conditions. Hydraulic extract of D. cinnabari and injected intraperitoneally daily for 10 days, while physiological serum was used for injection in to the control group. After 10 days of injection, estrogen and progesterone levels were measured by enzyme immunoassay technique. After dissection, the ovaries and uterine tissues were isolated for histological examination, and tissue changes were carefully examined. Results: The results revealed that the levels of estrogen and progesterone in experimental Groups 2 and 3 had a significant increase(P < 0.001). Regarding tissue changes, a significant increase was observed in epithelial thickness(P < 0.001), number of corpus luteum(P < 0.01), and Graafian follicle(P < 0.01) in doses of 100 and 150 mg/kg. Conclusions: Based on the results, it seems that D. cinnabari extract has an effect on the ovarian follicles.

Hemoglobin optimization and transfusion strategies in patients undergoing cardiac surgery

Although red blood cells(RBCs) transfusion is sometimes associated with adverse reactions,anemia could also lead to increased morbidity and mortality in highrisk patients. For these reasons,the definition of perioperative strategies that aims to detect and treat preoperative anemia,prevent excessive blood loss,and define "optimal" transfusion algorithms is crucial. Although the treatment with preoperative iron and erythropoietin has been recommended in some specific conditions,several controversies exist regarding the benefit-to-risk balance associated with these treatments. Further studies are needed to better define the indications,dosage,and route of administration for preoperative iron with or without erythropoietin supplementation. Although restrictive transfusion strategies in patients undergoing cardiac surgery have been shown to effectively reduce the incidence and the amount of RBCs transfusion without increase in side effects,some high-risk patients(e.g.,symptomatic acute coronary syndrome) could benefit from higher hemoglobin concentrations. Despite all efforts made last decade,a significant amount of work remains to be done to improve hemoglobin optimization and transfusion strategies in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Objective:To investigate the effect of isoimperatorin on histopathological and biochemical changes in acetic acid-induced colitis ***:Colitis was induced by intracolonic administration of acetic acid solution(4%v/v)in *** were divided into six groups including the sham group,the negative control group,the dexamethasone-treated group,and the groups treated with isoimperatorin(0.1,1,and 10 mg/kg/d by gavage).The treatments were administered for three days and then colonic status was assessed by macroscopic,histopathological,and biochemical ***:Isoimperatorin significantly alleviated colonic damage in a dose-dependent manner and improved histological changes in rats with acetic acid-induced *** also significantly reduced myeloperoxidase,TNF-α,IL-1β,and malodialdehyde ***:Isoimperatorin alleviates acetic acid-induced colitis in rats and may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of colitis.

A bipolar hybrid microgrid is a new topology which benefits from the advantages of both alternating current(AC)and direct current(DC)*** AC/DC converter is the key of this topology which has the following characteristics:being able to provide two equal pole voltages in DC side;complying with the standards of current quality at AC side;being able to control active and reactive power independently in AC side,and transmitting bidirectional *** this paper,two categories of power converters including single-stage and two-stage converters are proposed for this topology.A new cost-effective control strategy is added to the control of general grid-connected converter for each interlinking converter,and the control of autonomous DC-link pole voltage for both candidates is *** simulations based on the designed control strategies are conducted to validate the function of control strategies under the operation conditions of different DC *** performances of two selected interlinking converters with balanced and unbalanced DC loads are *** power quality of microgrid and total harmonic distortion(THD)analysis are demonstrated in grid-tied and islanded ***,semiconductor power loss simulations based on a closed-loop thermal network simulation are ***,the mutual effects of power loss and initial junction temperature are investigated.
