Introduction: Hemorrhoids, more commonly known as piles, are swollen veins, similar to varicose veins in the lower rectum. Hemorrhoids can develop both inside and outside the rectum, and oftentimes, the cause of hemorrhoids remains unknown. This is an extremely common ailment faced by three out of four adults in their lifetime. Hemorrhoids can cause various kinds of complications, but the most common and serious ones are perianal thrombosis and incarcerated prolapsed internal hemorrhoids with subsequent thrombosis. They are accompanied by severe pain in the perianal region, and possible bleeding. Data on the coexistence of hemorrhoids with other conditions are sparse. Some data are consistent with a common pathophysiological link between straining at stool, constipation, and obstetrical events such as pregnancy and delivery. These events are also involved in the development of Chronic Vein Disease (CVD) or Chronic Vein Insufficiency (CVI). CVI is a condition that occurs when the venous walls or valves in the leg veins stop working properly, causing difficulty in blood returning to the heart from the legs. The present study was conducted with an aim to determine the frequency of complaints in hemorrhoidal patients and to assess the possible concomitance between hemorrhoidal disease and chronic venous disease. Energy Harvesting in the Wake of An Inverted C-Shaped Bluff Body

Doping radius effects on an erbium-doped fiber amplifier

In an erbium-doped fiber amplifier(EDFA), erbium ions act as a three-level system. Therefore, much higher pump energy is required to achieve the population inversion in an erbium-doped fiber(EDF). This higher pump energy requirement complicates the efficient design of an EDFA. However, efficient use of the pump power can improve the EDFA performance. The improved performance of an EDFA can be obtained by reducing the doping radius of the EDF. A smaller doping radius increases pump–dopant interactions and subsequently increases the pump–photon conversion efficiency. Decreasing the doping radius allows a larger proportion of dopant ions,which are concentrated near the core, to interact with the highest pump intensity. However, decreasing the doping radius beyond a certain limit will bring the dopant ions much closer and introduce detrimental ion–ion interaction effects. In this Letter, we show that an optimal doping radius in an EDF can provide the best gain performance. Moreover, we have simulated the well-known numerical aperture effects on EDFA gain performance to support our claim.

Mercury remediation potential of a mercury resistant strain Sphingopyxis ***2 isolated from contaminated soil

Characterization of Au/CdTe nanocomposites prepared by electrostatic interaction

Au/CdTe nanocomposites were prepared by electrostatic interaction between oppositely-charged gold （Au） and cadmium telluride （CdTe） nanoparticles. Au and CdTe nanoparticles were stabilized by 4-（dimethylamino）pyridine （DMAP） and 3-mercaptopropionic acid to develop positive and negative charges on their surfaces in aqueous solutions, respectively. The red shifts of the surface plasmon absorptions with the increase of Au content indicate that the sizes of the nanocomposites expanded due to the complex formation. Mixing ratio of Au and CdTe nanoparticles controls the structure of the resulting composites effectively. Moreover, the sizes and shapes of the mixed nanoparticles are important parameters for the formation of metal/semiconductor nanocomposites. The Au/CdTe nanocomposites were characterized by small angle X-ray scattering technique （SAXS）, transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, cyclic voltammetry （CV） and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）.

Engineering carbon quantum dots for photomediated theranostics

Carbon quantum dots （CQDs） have emerged as potential alternatives to classical metal-based semiconductor quantum dots （QDs） due to the abundance of their precursors, their ease of synthesis, high biocompatibility, low cost, and particularly their strong photoresponsiveness, tunability, and stability. Light is a versatile, tunable stimulus that can provide spatiotemporal control. Its interaction with CQDs elicits interesting responses such as wavelength-dependent optical emissions, charge/electron transfer, and heat generation, processes that are suitable for a range of photomediated bioapplications. The carbogenic core and surface characteristics of CQDs can be tuned through versatile engineering strategies to endow specific optical and physicochemical properties, while conjugation with specific moieties can enable the design of targeted probes. Fundamental approaches to tune the responses of CQDs to photo-interactions and the design of bionanoprobes are presented, which enable biomedical applications involving diagnostics and therapeutics. These strategies represent comprehensive platforms for engineering multifunctional probes for nanomedicine, and the design of QD probes with a range of metal-free and emer^in~ 2D materials.

Nitrogen fertilization degrades soil aggregation by increasing ammonium ions and decreasing biological binding agents on a Vertisol after 12 years

Degraded soil aggregation arising from nitrogen(N)fertilization has been reported in many studies;however,the mechanisms have not yet been *** the impact of N fertilization on soil aggregation would help to improve soil structure and sustain high crop *** objective of this study was to determine the impact of long-term N fertilization on soil aggregation and its association with binding and dispersing agents.A 12-year(2008–2019)N fertilization field experiment on a Vertisol was performed,covering a wide range of N application rates(0,360,450,540,630,and 720 kg ha-1 year-1)and including straw management(straw return and straw removal)in a wheat(Triticum aestivum L.)-maize(Zea mays L.)cropping *** samples of 0–20 cm depth were collected from 12 field treatments with 3 replications in *** aggregate stability(mean weight diameter(MWD))and contents of soil organic carbon(SOC),glomalin-related soil protein(GRSP),microbial biomass carbon(MBC),and mineral N(NH4+and NO3-)were ***-term N fertilization under straw removal conditions reduced soil MWD by 12%–18%at N rates from 0 to 720 kg ha-1 compared to that under straw return(P0.05);consequently,it improved soil ***,our results indicate that long-term N fertilization may degrade soil aggregation because of the increases in monovalent ions(H+and NH4+)and the decrease in MBC during soil acidification,especially when the applied N dose exceeded 360 kg ha-1 *** finding can minimize the negative structural impacts on Vertisol.

Design and analysis of high birefringence and nonlinearity with small confinement loss photonic crystal fiber

High birefringence with low confinement loss photonic crystal fiber (PCF) has significant advantages in the field of sensing, dispersion compensation devices, nonlinear applications, and polarization filter. In this report, two different models of PCFs are presented and compared. Both the models contain five air holes rings with combination of circular and elliptical air holes arrangement. Moreover, the elliptical shaped air holes polarization and the third ring air holes rotational angle are varied. To examine different guiding characteristics, finite element method (FEM) with perfectly matched layer (PML) absorbing boundary condition is applied from 1.2 to 1.8 |im wavelength range. High birefringence, low confinement loss, high nonlinearity, and moderate disper-sion values are successfully achieved in both the PCFs models. Numeric analysis shows that model-1 gives higher birefringence (2.75 ×10^-2) and negative dispersion (-540.67 ps/(nm ·km)) at 1.55 |im wavelength. However, model-2 gives more small confinement loss than model-1 at the same wavelength. In addition, the proposed design demonstrates the variation of rotation angle has great impact to enhance guiding properties especially the birefringence.

Corrosion resistance and thermal stability of sputtered Fe44Al34Ti7N15 and Al61Ti11N28 thin films for prospective application in oil and gas industry

Fe-and Al-based thin-film metallic glass coatings(Fe44Al34Ti7N15and Al61Ti11N28) were fabricated using magnetron co-sputtering technique, and their corrosion performances compared against wrought 316 L stainless steel. The results of GI-XRD and XPS analyses demonstrated amorphous structure and oxide layer formation on the surface of the fabricated thin films, respectively. The potentiodynamic(PD) polarization test in chloridethiosulfate(NH4Cl + Na2S2O3) solution revealed lower corrosion current(Icorr)(0.42 ± 0.02 μA/cm~2 and0.086 ± 0.001 μA/cm~2 Vs. 0.76 ± 0.05 μA/cm~2), lower passivation current(Ipass)(1.45 ± 0.03 μA/cm~2 and1.83 ± 0.07 μA/cm~2 Vs. 1.98 ± 0.04 μA/cm~2), and approximately six-fold higher breakdown potential(Ebd) for Fe-and Al-based coatings than those of wrought 316 L stainless steel. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS) of both films showed 4-and 2-fold higher charge transfer resistance(Rct), 7-and 2.5-times higher film resistance(Rf), lower film capacitance values(Qf)(10 ± 2.4 μS-sacm-2, and 5.41 ± 0.8 μS-sacm-2Vs. 18 ± 2.21 μSsacm-2), and lower double-layer capacitance values(Qdl)(31.33 ± 4.74 μS-sacm-2, and 15.3 ± 0.48 μS-sacm-2Vs.43 ± 4.23 μS-sacm-2), indicating higher corrosion resistance of the thin films. Cyclic Voltammetry(CV) scan exhibited that the passive films formed on the Fe-and Al-based coatings were more stable and less prone to pitting corrosion than the wrought 316 L stainless steel. The surface morphology of both films via SEM endorsed the CV scan results, showing better resistance to pitting corrosion. Furthermore, the thermal analysis via TGA and DSC revealed the excellent thermal stability of the thin films over a wide temperature range typically observed in oilgas industries.

In silico identification and characterization of common epitope-based peptide vaccine for Nipah and Hendra viruses

Objective: To explore a common B-and T-cell epitope-based vaccine that can elicit an immune response against encephalitis causing genus Henipaviruses, Hendra virus(He V) and Nipah virus(Ni V). Methods: Membrane proteins F, G and M of He V and Ni V were retrieved from the protein database and subjected to different bioinformatics tools to predict antigenic B-cell epitopes. Best B-cell epitopes were then analyzed to predict their T-cell antigenic potentiality. Antigenic B-and T-cell epitopes that shared maximum identity with He V and Ni V were selected. Stability of the selected epitopes was predicted. Finally, the selected epitopes were subjected to molecular docking simulation with HLA-DR to confirm their antigenic potentiality in silico. Results: One epitope from G proteins, one from M proteins and none from F proteins were selected based on their antigenic potentiality. The epitope from the G proteins was stable whereas that from M was unstable. The M-epitope was made stable by adding flanking dipeptides. The 15-mer G-epitope(VDPLRVQWRNNSVIS) showed at least 66% identity with all Ni V and He V G protein sequences, while the 15-mer M-epitope(GKLEFRRNNAIAFKG) with the dipeptide flanking residues showed 73% identity with all Ni V and He V M protein sequences available in the database. Molecular docking simulation with most frequent MHC class-II(MHC II) and class-I(MHC I) molecules showed that these epitopes could bind within HLA binding grooves to elicit an immune response. Conclusions: Data in our present study revealed the notion that the epitopes from G and M proteins might be the target for peptide-based subunit vaccine design against He V and Ni V. However, the biochemical analysis is necessary to experimentally validate the interaction of epitopes individually with the MHC molecules through elucidation of immunity induction.
