Primary tumor location and survival in colorectal cancer: A retrospective cohort study

In the present study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the discrete element method (DEM) are used in conjunction with the Eulerian-Lagrangian method to simulate a pseudo-two-dimensional spouted bed comprising coarse 6-mm particles. The open-source OpenFOAM code is used to solve the governing equations. The predicted vertical particle velocity along the bed axis, particle velocity profiles in the radial directi on, power spectral den sity, time-averaged particle velocity vectors, bed pressure drop, and solid flow pattern are evaluated and compared with existing experimental data. Good agreement is found between the CFD-DEM results and the measured data. It is also shown that the present CFD-DEM model accurately predicts the particle flow pattern throughout the bed. It is found that the drag force, solid stresses, and gravity play important roles in the CFD-DEM simulation of a spouted bed comprising coarse particles.

Spouted bed with a porous draft tube is used for drying of grains and chemical products and thermal disinfestations process. This work provides a computational fluid dynamics （CFD） simulation of binary mixtures of glass particles in a spouted bed with a porous draft tube. The simulation used the multi-fluid Eulerian-Eulerian approach based on kinetic theory of granular flows, incorporating a kinetic-frictional constitutive model for dense assemblies of particulate solids and Gidaspow＇s drag model for the interaction between gas and particles. Influences of solids mass fraction and inlet gas flow rate on pressure distribution, gas and particle velocities were studied. The modeling results were compared with the exper- imental work of Ishikura, Nagashima, and Ide （2003） for the flow condition along the axis of the spouted bed. Good agreement between the modeling results and experimental data was observed.

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Helicobacter pylori strains isolated from patients in Shiraz, Southern Iran

AIM: To improve our understanding of Iranian regional variation in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori ) antibiotic resistance rates to find the best antibiotic therapy for eradication of H. pylori ***: A total of 266 patients undergoing endoscopy in Shiraz, Southern Iran, were included in this study. H. pylori strains were isolated from antral biopsies by culture and confirmed by the rapid urease-test and gram staining. Antibiotic susceptibility of H. pylori isolates was determined by ***: A total of 121 H. pylori strains were isolated, 50 from male and 71 from female patients. Data showed that 44% (n = 53), 20% (n = 24), 5% (n = 6), and 3% (n = 4) of all strains were resistant to the antibiotics metronidazole, amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and tetracycline, respectively. When the antibiotics were considered together we found 11 sensitivity patterns for the strains. Resistance to metronidazole was significantly higher in female than in male patients (P 256 mg/L) which was found in 71% of the isolates is considerable. In the case of amoxicillin, an increased resistance rate of 20% is worrying. Resistance to clarithromycin and tetracycline is also emerging among the H. pylori strains in our region.

AIM： To investigate the association of the inducible ni- tric oxide synthetase （iNOS） C150T polymorphism with Helicobacter pylori （H. pylor/） infection and gastric can- cer （GC） risk in Iran. METHODS： In order to determine whether there was a correlation between iNOS genotype and GC in Iran, we conducted a case-control study using samples from 329 individuals. For each sample, the C150T ilVOS poly- morphism was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction （PCR） and restriction digestion. Patients were grouped by cancer presence, demographic and behavior charac- teristics, and/-/, pylori infection status. Statistical tests were conducted to determine whether any behavioral factors or a particular iNOS genotype was associated with GC in the study population. RESULTS： In this population, we found that smok- ing, hot beverage consumption, a familial history of GC and H. pylori infection status were significantly associated with GC development （P = 0.015, P 〈 0.001, P = 0.0034, and P 〈 0.015, respectively）. The distribution of the C150T ilVOS genotypes among the two study groups was not statistically significant alone, but was impacted by H. pylori infection status. When compared to the non-/-/, pylori infected group, cancer patients who had a heterozygous CT genotype and were also infected with H. pylori were 2.1 times more at risk of developing GC [odds ratio （OR） = 2.1, P = 0.03] while those with a homozygous TT genotype and infected with H. pylori were 5.0 times more at risk of developing GC （OR = 5.0, P = 0.029）. In contrast, this association was not seen in patients in the control ***： ACT or TT polymorphism at position 150 in the iNO$ gene significantly increases the risk of GC and may be a marker for GC susceptibility.

Effects of Pits and Mounds Following Windthrow Events on Soil Features and Greenhouse Gas Fluxes in a Temperate Forest

Pit and mound micro-relief(resultant microsites from trees uprooted by windthrow) could have regimes of microclimate and soil features that differ from areas of undisturbed soil. In an attempt to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the significance of pits and mounds on soil features and also the dynamics of greenhouse gas(GHG) fluxes at local scale, this study was carried out in a reserved area of Darabkola forest in Mazandaran Province, northern Iran. The age of a pit and mound was considered equal to the degree of decay of the blown down tree. Three microsites were distinguished, consisting of pit bottom(PB), mound top(MT) and undisturbed area(UA). Soil samples were taken at 0–15 and 15–30 cm depths from all microsites and analysed for soil physical, chemical and biological features. Our findings suggested that in context of forest ecology, pits and mounds following windthrow events should be considered as an effective factor influencing soil features(i.e., density, texture, water content, p H, organic C, total N, available nutrients and earthworm density/biomass) and especially GHG fluxes. Results showed that MT acted as a sink for N2O(-0.010 mg N2 O m-2d-1) and CH4(-0.257 mg CH4m-2d-1) fluxes and also produced lower CO2 concentrations(0.095 mg CO2 m-2d-1) than PB(0.207 mg CO2 m-2d-1) and UA(0.098 mg CO2 m-2d-1). As a consequence, a separation into pits/mounds would be important for a precise budgeting of greenhouse gases.
