Hypoglycemic and antioxidant activities of Caesalpinia ferrea martius leaf extract in streptozotocininduced diabetic rats

Objective: To evaluate the antidiabetic and antioxidant ef ects of aqueous ethanolic extract of Caesalpinia ferrea(C. ferrea) leaf in normal and streptozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic ***: male Sprague-Dawley rats divided into 6 groups of 6 rats each were assigned into diabetic and non-diabetic groups. Diabetes was induced in rats by single intraperitoneal administration of STZ(65 mg/kg body weight). C. ferrea extract at the doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight was orally administered to both diabetic and non-diabetic animals for a period of 30 days. After completion of experimental duration serum, liver and pancreas were used for evaluating biochemical and histopathological ***: Oral administration of C. ferrea leaf extract significantly reduced elevated serum glucose, α-amylase, liver function levels and signii cantly increased serum insulin, total protein and body weight as well as improved lipid proi le due to diabetes. Furthermore, the treatment resulted in a marked increase in glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase and reduced glutathione, and diminished levels of lipid peroxidation in liver and pancreas of diabetic rats. Histopathological studies demonstrated the reduction in the pancreas and liver damage and coni rmed the biochemical i ***: From the present study, it can be concluded that the C. ferrea leaf extract ef ectively improved hyperglycaemia while inhibiting the progression of oxidative stress in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Hence, it can be used in the management of diabetes mellitus.

Comparative Analysis of mRI Diagnosis and multislice CT in the Diagnosis of Soft Tissue Tumors in Limbs

The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the diagnostic applications of multisliecs spiral computed tomography(mSCT)and diffusively-weighted magnetic resonance imaging(mRI)in soft tissue tumors of extremities.A total of 104 patients with primary soft tissue tumors of limbs were selected for mSCT and mRI *** values of various tumor types were compared during CT *** mRI detection,the diffusion sensitivity factor(b)of diffuse-weighted mRI was 0.500 s/mm2 to avoid as much as possible the bleeding,necrosis,scar and calcification heterogeneity components during *** maximum interest point was selected to observe the apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC)between benign and malignant tumors and muscle *** showed that among 104 patients,36 of patients were malignant and 68 of patients were *** examination was consistent with pathology in 45 cases and mRI in 87 *** addition,the 59 of patients in mSCT examination and the 17 of patients in mRI were qualitative error and *** tissue tumors on mSCT showed a low-density mass,and lipoma and cyst were *** mRI examination,T1WI and T2WI were significantly different in different types of tumors,while ADC values of malignant tumors were significantly lower than those of benign tumors and muscle tissues(Pmor and muscle tissue(P>0.05).Therefore,mSCT can clearly show the soft tissue tumor lesions of the limbs and identify the relationship between them and the surrounding ***,mSCT cannot make accurate *** diffusivity weighted imaging can better differentiate benign from malignant and infer the histological origin of *** detection level of mRI was significantly higher than that of CT,which was more consistent with ***,in the preoperative diagnosis of soft tissue tumors in limbs,mRI diffused-weighted imaging should be the first choi

Background: Obesity is a major risk factor for endometrial carcinoma, and we aim to assess markers of carcinogenesis including PTEN and Ki-67 and hormone receptors profile including ER, PR and AR before and after bariatric surgery to find out its effects in reducing endometrial carcinoma risk in morbid obese females. Patients and methods: The study included 80 females with morbid obesity (BmI > 40 Kg/m2) who underwent bariatric surgery. All were sampled by Pipelle biopsy at baseline and 12 months after operation and examined histopathologically and immunohistochemically for Ki-67, PTEN, ER, PR and AR. Results: Sixty two out of 80 (62/80) females showed no pathological abnormalities;4 had polyps;7 had simple endometrial hyperplasia;4 had atypical endometrial hyperplasia and 3 had endometrial carcinoma. In total, 34 females underwent gastric bypass operation (42.5%) and 46 underwent a sleeve gastrectomy operation (57.5%). There was a statistically significant difference between baseline weight and BmI before and after surgery (p men with simple hyperplasia, resolution occurred in 5 within 7 months of surgery. Three of 4 females with atypical hyperplasia (AH) showed resolution after 9 months. mean Ki-67 score was lower at 12 months (p men with baseline endometrial abnormalities, of whom 5/15 regained glandular PTEN expression as their endometrial abnormalities resolved. Transposable elements are capable of switching their positions on the genome thereby causing gene arrangements and contributing to genome evolution. The aim of this review is to specifically discuss the role of transposable elements in transferring antimicrobial resistance genes in E. coli, thus contributing to increase in virulence and conferring the possibility of multidrug resistance. Different types of transposable elements such as transposons and integrons and their profound influence on E. coli antimicrobial resistance are the focus of this review.

Evaluation of Bilateral mental Nerve Block as an Alternative to General Anesthesia for Resection of Lower Lip Tumors

Objective: Nerve blockade is commonly used in oncosurgical procedures as an alternative to general anesthesia for older patients and those with significant medical problems. We report a single tertiary oncology center experience in performing various lip resections and reconstructive techniques using this technique. Patients and methods: sixty patients with lower lip tumors were enrolled into this study with exclusion of refusing, non-compliant and critically ill patients. A solution of 4 ml 2% Lidocaine and epinephrine was put in a 5 ml syringe. Half the solution (2 ml) was injected into each side with a 23 gauge needle and after 5 minutes the surgical resection was carried out after testing for anesthesia. Results: The mean age was 68 ± 6.2 years. The mean ASA score was 3 ± 0.75. There were 4 cases who expressed painful sensation and their operations were completed with fentanyl increments. mean hospital stay was 1 ± 0.75 days. There were three cases of wound gaping who were treated with secondary closure in an outpatient basis. One patient expressed postoperative acute ischemic heart pain that was managed with anti-ischemic measurements. Conclusion: Bilateral mental nerve block is a safe and effective alternative to general anesthesia in lower lip tumors’ resection especially in older patients and those with poor tolerance for general anesthesia provided that there is no need for cervical nodal dissection.

Effects of methyl palmitate and lutein on LPS-induced acute lung injury in rats

AIm: To investigate the effects of methyl palmitate and lutein on lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced acute lung injury(ALI) in rats and explore the possible mechanisms. mETHODS: male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups:(1) control;(2) LPS;(3) methyl palmitate; and(4) Lutein groups. methyl palmitate(300 mg/kg, ip) was administered 3 times per week on alternating days while lutein(100 mg/kg, oral) was given once daily. After 1 wk of vehicle/methyl palmitate/lutein treatment, ALI was induced by a single dose of LPS(7.5 mg/kg, iv). After 24 h of LPS injection, animals were sacrificed then biochemical parameters and histopathology were assessed. RESULTS: Treatment with methyl palmitate attenuated ALI, as it significantly decreased the lung wet/dry weight(W/D) ratio, the accumulation of the inflammatory cells in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF) andhistopathological damage. However, methyl palmitate failed to decrease lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) activity in BALF. On the other hand, lutein treatment produced significant anti-inflammatory effects as revealed by significant decrease in accumulation of inflammatory cells in lung, LDH level in BALF and histopathological damage. methyl palmitate and lutein significantly increased superoxide dismutase(SOD) and reduced glutathione(GSH) activities with significant decrease in the lung malondialdehyde(mDA) content. Importantly, methyl palmitate and lutein decreased the level of the inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) in the lung. Lutein also reduced LPS-mediated overproduction of pulmonary nitrite/nitrate(NO-2/NO-3), which was not affected by methyl palmitate pretreatment. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate the potent protective effects of both methyl palmitate and lutein against LPS-induced ALI in rats. These effects can be attributed to potent antioxidant activities of these agents, which suppress inflammatory cell infiltration and regulated cytokine effects.

The common pentanucleotide polymorphism of the 3’-untranslated region of the leptin receptor gene is associated with obesity in Saudi females

Obesity is due to the combined effects of genes, environment, lifestyle, and the interactions of these factors. Leptin receptor (LEPR) gene has been intensively evaluated in the search of variants that could be related to obesity. The results of most of these studies have been controversial. We investigated the effects of leptin receptor gene 3’-untranslated region (3’-UTR) polymorphism on phenotype, metabolic parameters and anthropometric measurements of obese Saudi females. 122 healthy women aged 19 to 36 years. The subjects were divided into 3 groups according to their body mass index BmI;lean (BmI 18 - 24), overweight (BmI 25 - 29) and obese (BmI ≥ 30). There were 13 homozygotes and 34 heterozygotes for the 3’-UTR insertion allele amongst all 122 women. The results of this study show that the allele frequency of the insertion allele (I) of 3’UTR was significantly higher in overweight (35.3) and obese females (32.2) compared to the frequency in lean females (15.6). The insertion allele was associated with increased BmI in obese groups. The results obtained from this study indicated that in the obese subjects most variable values increased in I/I homozygote but the significant high value recorded among BmI (40.9 ± 7.11 kg/m2, P = 0.042). Our findings indicated that, the obesity in Saudi females is influenced by alteration in the leptin receptor gene 3’-UTR polymorphism.
