Differentiated Thyroid Cancer with Thyroglobulin Elevation and Negative Iodine Scintigraphy (TENIS Syndrome)

Background and Objectives: Following the initial management, some patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) develop a state of high thyroglobulin (Tg) and Negative Iodine Scintigraphy. The predisposing factors and outcome of this condition are unclear. In this study, our objectives were to analyze the characteristics of patients with high Tg level and negative Iodine scintigraphy and to determine the predictive factors for development of high Tg and negative scintigraphy. Patients and Methods: Retrospective study of 34 patients undergoing treatment for DTC, followed in the Nuclear Medicine department of the University Hospital—Sahloul Sousse between 1990 and 2006 and having a high Tg and negative Iodine scintigraphy. Fourteen patients had Tg between 2 and 10 ng/ml, 16 had Tg between 11 and 100 ng/ml and 4 patients had Tg more than 100 ng/ml. Results: There were 25 women and 9 men. The mean age was 51.65 years. In 94.1% of cases, the tumor was papillary carcinoma. Follicular tumors accounted for only 5.9%. The mean nodule size was3.26 cm. Capsular invasion was seen in 47.1% cases. The locoregional invasion was found in 35.3%. The lymph node extension was found in 84.8% of patients having lymph node surgery. Lymph node involvement was observed in 92.8% of patients with papillary cancer but it was found in 7.2% of patients with follicular cancers. Lymph node invasion was unilateral in 28.6% (N1a) and bilateral, contralateral or mediastinal in 71.4% (N1b). Initial level of Tg was as follows: 7 patients had Tg between 2 and 10 ng/ml, 14 patients had Tg between 11 and 100 ng/ml and 12 had Tg more than 100 ng/ml. The mean number of radioactive Iodine cure was 11.08 for patients with Tg more than 100 ng/ml with a significant difference (P = 0.001). Conclusion: Among epidemiological, pathological and clinical characteristics, lymph node invasion is the most frequent parameter found in patients with a DTC with high Tg level and negative Iodine scintigraphy.

Objective: To examine the potential antimicrobial activity of Euphorbia paralias L. (Euphorbiaeae) leaves and stems extracts. Methods: The antimicrobial activity was tested against six microbial strains:Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, Salmonella enterica CIP 8039, Staphy-lococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027 and Candida albicans ATCC 90028 by two different methods, the disk method and the dilution method. Results: Our results showed the important antimicrobial activity of the chloroform extract of the stems towards the majority of the strains by using both methods. Bacillus subtilis was the most sensitive strain (MIC=MBC=15μg/mL). Conclusion: Thus, some extracts of Euphorbia paralias can be used in the treatment of infectious diseases caused by microbes.

MIMO Spectral Efficiency over Energy Consumption Requirements: Application to WSNs

This paper presents the evaluation of the “capacity to the total energy consumption per bit ratio” of multiple antennas systems with distributed fashion. We propose an adequate geometric channel modeling for the wireless communication system which operates in indoor propagation environment with scatterers. The channel model is derived in function of both the line of sight (LOS) and the non line of sight (NLOS) components. The aim of this paper is to study the limits in the gain concerning the capacity to the total energy consumption ratio when additional antennas are implemented in the communication system. To do so, we have evaluated by simulations both the capacity and the total energy consumption per bit. Then, we have determined the capacity to the total energy consumption ratio. Finally, the computational capacity to the total energy ratio is obtained for different system configurations. We have shown that the gain in capacity increases with the number of antennas but it stills be limited by the total energy consumption. The limits for increasing the number of transmit antennas are determined in function of the separation distances between the transmitter and the receiver sides of the communication system. Optimal power allocation strategy via water-filling algorithm has been carried out for evaluating the capacity to energy ratio. We find by simulation that optimal power allocation brings a gain in the addressed metric reaching a level of about 1.7 at transmit signal to noise ratio of 8 dB if comparing to the case when transmit energy is equally split among transmit antennas.

Objective:To examine the potential antioxidant and anti-α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of Tunisian Euphorbia paralias *** and stems extracts and their composition of total polyphenol and ***:The different samples were tested for their antiradical activities by using 2,2’-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS)and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH)***α-glucosidase activity,α-glucosidase(0.3 IU/mL)and substrate,2500μmol/L p-nitrophenylα-D-glucopyranoside were used;absorbance was registered at 405 ***:The leaves acetonic extract exhibited the strongestα-glucosidase inhibition[IC_(50)=(0.0035±0.001)μg/mL],which was 20-fold more active than the standard product(acarbose)[IC_(50)=(0.07±0.01)μg/mL].Acetonic extract of the leaves exhibited the highest quantity of total phenolic[(95.54±0.04)μg gallic acid equivalent/mg]and flavonoid[(55.16±0.25)μg quercetin equivalent/mg].The obtained findings presented also that this extract was detected with best antioxidant capacity[IC_(50)=(0.015±0.01)μg/mL]against DPPH and a value of IC_(50)equal to(0.02±0.01)μg/mL against *** relationship between polyphenolic content of the tested Euphorbia paralias *** and stems extracts and its antioxidant activity(DPPH and ABTS)was *** positive linear correlation was got between ABTS and total phenolic(R^(2)=0.751).Conclusions:The findings clearly demonstrate that the use of a polar solvent enables extraction of significant quantities of phenol compounds and flavonoids.

Developing high-yield maize hybrids is critical for sustaining maize production,especially in the face of rapid climate changes and the growing global *** the genetic diversity and combining ability in parental inbreds is needed for developing such high-yielding ***,this study aimed at evaluating parental genetic diversity employing simple sequence repeats(SSR)markers,estimating effects of general(GCA)and specific(SCA)combining abilities for grain yield and yield contributing characters,identifying high yielding hybrids,and evaluating the association of SCA effects and performance of hybrids with genetic ***-diallel mating scheme was utilized to develop 21 F_(1) hybrids from seven diverse maize inbred *** F_(1) hybrids along with check hybrid(SC-10),were investigated in a field trial over two growing seasons under arid *** assessed F_(1) hybrids displayed significant genetic variations across all recorded *** inbreds P_(1) and P_(3) were detected as effective combiners to develop early maturing ***,P_(3) and P_(4) were recognized as better combiners for improving grain yield and yield attributed *** hybrids P_(1)×P_(5) and P_(4)×P_(7) displayed significant SCA effects coupled with favorable agronomic *** hybrids are recommended for further evaluation and release as variety for arid environments to increase total maize production and contribute to food *** alleles per locus differed between 2 and 5,with average of 3.5 alleles/*** polymorphic information content(PIC)altered between 0.21 to 0.74,with a mean of *** neighbor-joining tree grouped the inbred lines into three clusters,providing a valuable tool to decrease the crosses needed to be assessed in the trial *** genetic distance varied from 0.63 to 0.90,averaging *** relationship between genetic diversity assessed through SSR markers and SCA effects was insignific

Background:Fever of unknown origin(FUO)in developing countries is an important dilemma and further research is needed to elucidate the infectious causes of ***:A multi-center study for infectious causes of FUO in lower middle-income countries(LMIC)and lowincome countries(LIC)was conducted between January 1,2018 and January 1,*** total,15 participating centers from seven different countries provided the data,which were collected through the Infectious DiseasesInternational Research Initiative *** adult patients with confirmed infection as the cause of FUO were included in the *** severity parameters were quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(qSOFA)≥2,intensive care unit(ICU)admission,vasopressor use,and invasive mechanical ventilation(IMV).Results:A total of 160 patients with infectious FUO were included in the ***,148(92.5%)patients had community-acquired infections and 12(7.5%)had hospital-acquired *** most common infectious syndromes were tuberculosis(TB)(n=27,16.9%),infective endocarditis(n=25,15.6%),malaria(n=21,13.1%),brucellosis(n=15,9.4%),and typhoid fever(n=9,5.6%).Plasmodium falciparum,Mycobacterium tuberculosis,Brucellae,Staphylococcus aureus,Salmonella typhi,and Rickettsiae were the leading infectious agents in this study.A total of 56(35.0%)cases had invasive procedures for *** mean qSOFA score was 0.76±0.94{median(interquartile range[IQR]):0(0–1)}.ICU admission(n=26,16.2%),vasopressor use(n=14,8.8%),and IMV(n=10,6.3%)were not ***,38(23.8%)patients had at least one of the severity *** mortality rate was 15(9.4%),and the mortality was attributable to the infection causing FUO in 12(7.5%)***:In LMIC and LIC,tuberculosis and cardiac infections were the most severe and the leading infections causing FUO.
