Radiation therapy(RT)is a treatment option for head and neck cancer(HNC),but 2%of RT patients may experience damage to the jawbone,resulting in osteoradionecrosis(ORN).The ORN can manifest years after RT *** in the local microchemical bone quality prior to the clinical manifestation of ORN could play a key role in ORN *** bone quality can be analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),that is applied to examine the effects of cancer,chemotherapy,and RT on the quality of human man-dibular *** mandibular bone samples were harvested from dental implant beds of 23 individuals,i.e.,patients with surgically and radiotherapeutically treated HNC(RT-HNC,n=7),surgically and radiochemotherapeutically treated HNC(CH-RT-HNC,n=3),only surgically treated HNC(SRG-HNC,n=4),and healthy controls(n=9).Infrared spectra were acquired from two representative regions of interest in cortical mandibular *** parameters,i.e.,mineral-to-matrix ratio(mm),carbonate-to-matrix ratio(Cm),carbonate-to-phosphate ratio(CP),collagen maturity(cross-linking),crystallinity,acid phosphate substitu-tion(APS),and advanced glycation end products(AGEs),were analyzed for each *** I region of the CH-RT-HNC group differed from the control group in cluster analysis(p=0.02).Apart from a minor variation trend in collagen maturity(p=0.07),there were no other signif-icant differences between the ***,the effect of radiochemotherapy on mandibular bone composition should be further *** future trials,this study design is potential when the effects of the cancer burden and different HNC treatment modalities on jawbone composition are studied,in order to reveal ORN pathogenesis.

This study aimed to determine the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria in jeddah ministry of Health hospitals. Sixteen month follow-up (january 2010 to April 2011) study was carried out and clinical isolates of hospitalized patients were collected, identified and their antimicrobial resistance was determined using two automated systems, Phoenix and Vitek 2. Results revealed that 6195 isolates were identified of which 94% (5846/6195) were Gram negatives. In Escherichia coli, the resistance was 40% (681/1703) to ciprofloxacin, 30% (511/1703) to cefepime, 29% (494/1703) to ceftazidime, 8.5% (145/1703) to tazocin and amikacin, 40% (681/1703) to gentamicin and cefuroxime. In Klebsiella pneumonia, the resistance was 48% (550/1147) to ceftazidime, 49% (565/1147) to cefuroxime, 45.5% (522/1147) to cefepime, 38% (436/1147) to gentamicin, 30% (344/1147) to ciprofloxacin, 19% (218/1147) to tazocin, 7.5% (86/1147) to amikacin and 2.4% (27/1147) to imipenem/meropenem. In Acinetobacter bumannii, 79% (850/1076) were resistant to ciprofloxacin, 68.5% (737/1076) to tazocin, 67% (721/1076) to cefepime, 66% (710/1076) to gentamicin and imipenem/meropenem, 65% (699/1076) to ceftazidime, 68% (735/1076) to amikacin and no resistance to colistin was reported. In Pseudomonas aeruginosa, almost 34% (555/1632) were resistant to ceftazidime, 31% (506/1632) to ciprofloxacin, 29% (473/1632) to cefepime, 26.5% (434/1638) to gentamicin, 19% (310/1632) to imipenem/meropenem, 17% (277/1632) to amikacin, and 15.5% (253/1632) were resistant to tazocin. In Gram positive isolates, mRSA counted only for 4.6% (302/6552) and no vancomycin intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) were detected. In conclusion, the resistance detected in this study is considered high and antibiotic Stewardship Programs is inevitably required.

Background: Bariatric surgery is an alternative treatment for obesity. However, physicians need to be aware of the possible consequences of nutritional deficiencies with this type of surgery. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of inadequacy of macro- and micronutrients from the diet in patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass after 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. methods: We performed a longitudinal, observational, clinical study during preoperatively and 3-, 6-, and 12-month postoperatively (n = 95 patients). We collected information from medical records of patients in a Reference Clinic of Bariatric Surgery. Quantitative food intake was analyzed by ADS Nutri? and multiple Source method? software. The obtained data were compared with the daily-recommended intake in accordance with specific guidelines for bariatric surgery. Data were analyzed using t-tests, mann-Whitney test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Tukey’s test. Results: There was a high prevalence of inadequacy of macronutrients and micronutrients from food in the postoperatively period. However, only vitamin B12 intake was adequate based on the daily recommended intake. Conclusions: Our study suggests that the intake of nutrients by feeding is below current recommendations. Individual nutritional counseling with a therapeutic plan for adequate nutrition and prescription supplements are important to ensure that nutritional recommendations are adhered to.
