Phytochemical screening and anticonvulsant studies of ethyl acetate fraction of Globimetula braunii on laboratory animals

Objective:To investigate the phytochemical properties and the anticonvulsant potential of the ethyl acetate soluble fraction of ethanol leaf extract of Globimetida braunii,a plant used in ethnomedicine for the treatment of ***:The phytochemical screening was carried out using standard protocol while the anticonvulsant activity was studied using maximal electroshock test in chicks,pentylenetetrazole and 4-aminopyridine—induced seizures in ***:The preliminary phytochemical screening carried out on the crude ethanol extract revealed the presence of saponins,carbohydrates,flavonoids,tannins,anthraquinones and ***,tannins,flavonoids and steroids/terpenes were found to be present in the ethyl acetate fraction,In the pharmacological screening,150 mg/kg of the fraction protected 83.33%of animals against pentylenetetrazole-induced seizure in mice whereas sodium valproate a standard anti-epileptic drug offered 100%*** the 4-aminopyridine-induced seizure model,the fraction produced a significant(P<0.05)increase in the mean onset of seizure in unprotected *** fraction did not exhibit a significant activity against maximal electroshock *** median lethal dose of the fraction was found to be 1261.91 mg/***:These results suggest that the ethyl acetate fraction of Globimetula braunii leaves extract possesses psychoactive compound that may be useful in the management of petit mal epilepsy and lend credence to the ethnomedical use of the plant in the management of epilepsy.

Utilization of Oil Properties to Develop a Spreading Rate Regression Model for Nigerian Crude Oil

The target of this study is to develop a spreading rate regression model capable of predicting rate of spread of Nigerian crude oil spills on water. The major factors responsible for spreading rate of crude oil on water were considered, namely surface tension, viscosity, and specific gravity/American Petroleum Institute degree (0API), all at specified temperature values. The surface tension, viscosity and density parameters were interactively measured under controlled factorial analysis. The spreading rate of each crude oil was determined by artificially spilling them on laboratory calm/stagnant water in a rectangular tank and their averages were also computed. These averages were used to develop a regression model equation for spreading rate. The model developed indicated that an average spreading rate was 3.3528 cm/s at 37.5°C and the predictive regression model is evaluated with the interactions of specific gravity, viscosity and surface tension. It is convenient to state that the model will predict the spread rate of crude oils which possess imputed physicochemical properties having pour point averaged 15.5°C on calm seawater.

Hence, this paper seeks to examine power sector privatization as a viable option.

Effect of MS （Methylated Spirit） as a Disinfectant and Antisticking Agent on Hatchability of C/arias gariepinus Eggs and Survival of the Hatchlings

African catfish Clarias gariepinus brood stocks were bred by normal induced breeding method, After fertilization, the eggs were treated with 0.40%, 0.50% and 0.60% concentration levels of MS （methylated spirit） and a control treatment without MS （0%）. The objective was to remove the stickiness of the egg outer vitelline membrane to improve hatchability and survival of the hatchlings. Two batches of the treatments were carried out according to treatment duration of 5 s and l0 s. The eggs hatched normally with the highest hatching percentage of 62.31% in eggs treated with 0.40% MS concentration in 5 s treatment and 61.92% in the same concentration for 10 s. The control treatment of 0.00% MS treatment gave the lowest hatchability of 49.69% at 5 s and 45.71% at 10 s exposure time. Growth performance of the hatchlings improved in eggs treated than those not treated. Those treated had higher weight gain and percentage specific growth rates than those not treated. Percentage survival ranged from 75% to 90 % in both treated and untreated groups. MS can therefore be safely used in fish hatchery to prevent egg stickiness to improve hatchability and larval development.

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease from the family of Schistosomatidae and genus Schistosoma,which is caused by blood *** disease is endemic in many countries and still a serious threat to global public health and *** this paper,a new deterministic model is designed and analyzed qualitatively to explore the dynamics of schistosomiasis transmission in human,cattle and snail *** from our mathematical analysis show that the model has a disease-free equilibrium(DFE)which is locally asymptotically stable(LAS)whenever a particular epidemiological threshold quantity,also known as basic reproduction number(R0)is less than *** analysis shows that the model has a unique endemic equilibrium(EE)which is globally asymptotically stable whenever R0>1 and unstable when R0<***,we adopt partial rank correlation coefficient for sensitivity analysis to reveal the most important parameters for effective control and mitigation of schistosomiasis disease in a ***,we obtain some numerical results by simulating the entire dynamics of the model,which show that the infections in the compartments of each population decrease with respect to *** further indicates that avoiding contact with infected human,cattle or infested water is vital to prevent the spread of schistosomiasis disease infection.

Effect of exchange blood transfusion on oxygen saturation of neonates with severe neonatal jaundice by pulse oximetry

Objective:To determine if there was any difference in SpO2 readings during exchange blood transfusion(EBT).Methods:A prospective cross-sectional study of neonates with severe neonatal jaundice requiring EBT was *** saturation was recorded before,immediately and 15 minutes after EBT by using a pulse ***:This study included 30 neonates with 20 males and 10 *** age ranged from 1 to 12 days with a mean of(5.4±2.9)***-EBT SpO2 ranged from 90%to 98%with a mean value of(94.3±2.2)%;SpO2 in the end of EBT ranged from 85%to 99%with a mean value of(94.1±3.2)%;SpO2 at 15 minutes after EBT ranged from 77%to 99%with a mean value of(94.8±4.1)%.There was no significant difference between SpO2 values at onset of EBT and either immediately or 15 minutes after EBT(P=0.770 and 0.422,respectively).SpO2 showed no significant difference between neonates who were infused with blood of different storage times(0.999)and 15 minutes after EBT(P=0.887).Besides,SpO2 values were compariable in neonates with hematocrit<45%or≥45%at the onset of EBT(P=0.284),immediately(P=0.118)and 15 minutes after EBT(P=0.868).Conclusions:EBT does not affect SpO2 in neonates.

An impacted oesophageal foreign body in a physically abused child

Physicians under-report cases of child abuse or child maltreatment. We present a case of an impacted oesophageal foreign body in a physically abused child. S.H. is a 7-year-old male child who accidentally ingested metal clip while being assaulted by his paternal uncle whom he resides with. He presented with dysphagia, odynophagia and drooling of saliva and urgent x-ray soft tissue neck revealing the presence of the metallic foreign body in the prevertebral region. He had emergency oesophagoscopy with the removal of foreign body, did well and was discharged home 4th day postoperatively after parental counselling. It remains the responsibility of paediatric healthcare providers to consider child maltreatment as a differential diagnosis of any unexplained injury or medical problems, including oesophageal foreign body impaction.

The present pandemic has posed a crisis to the economy of the world and the health ***,the race to expand research to understand some good molecular targets for vaccine and therapeutic development for SARS-CoV-2 is *** newly discovered coronavirus 2019(COVID-19)is a positive sense,single-stranded RNA,and enveloped virus,assigned to the beta CoV *** virus(SARS-CoV-2)is more infectious than the previously detected coronaviruses(MERS and SARS).Findings from many studies have revealed that S protein and RdRp are good targets for drug repositioning,novel therapeutic development(antibodies and small molecule drugs),and vaccine *** such as chloroquine,convalescent plasma,monoclonal antibodies,spike binding peptides,and small molecules could alter the ability of S protein to bind to the ACE-2 receptor,and drugs such as remdesivir(targeting SARS-CoV-2 RdRp),favipir,and emetine could prevent SASR-CoV-2 RNA *** novel vaccines such as mRNA1273(Moderna),3LNP-mRNAs(Pfizer/BioNTech),and ChAdOx1-S(University of Oxford/Astra Zeneca)targeting S protein have proven to be effective in combating the present *** exploration of the potential of S protein and RdRp is crucial in fighting the present pandemic.

The Sub Acute Toxicity Evaluation of <i>Stereospermum kunthianum</i>Aqueous Methanolic Stem Bark Extract

Stereospermum kunthianum (Bignoniaceae) is a plant widely used for health benefits. A safety profile evaluation (acute toxicity study) of the plant extract is critical, in a step to the systematic pharmacognostic study of this plant. Thirty-two (32) rats were randomly selected and divided into four groups labelled 1 to 4 with the initial weights of the rats recorded. The animals in group 1 served as control and were administered distilled water, while those in Groups 2, 3 and 4 received 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg respectively, of the Stereospermum kunthianum aqueous methanolic stem bark extract daily. The results indicated no deaths, no observable clinical signs of toxicity, no obvious stress or changes in physical appearance or behaviour in the rats. This general picture of safety is further supported by the multiple comparison post hoc test (Turkey’s) of, the organs weights, the renal (electrolyte, urea and creatinine), the haematological parameters (RBC, HB, PCV, MCV, MCH, MCHC, and Platelet), and the hepatic enzymes (AST and ALT), that all showed the control group to be insignificantly different from the extract treated groups. In conclusion, the extract was deduced to be safe on oral administration for 28 days and it also showed a hepatoprotective quality.
