As a part of our systematic study of the physical properties of the compounds of symmetric liquid crystal dimer homologous series, α,ω-bis-(4-n-alkylaniline benzylidene-4’-oxy) alkanes (***.m), we report here an optical study of two nematogenic compounds of this series viz., 6.O12O.6 and 7.O12O.7 by carrying out the measurement of extraordinary and ordinary refractive indices using modified spectrometer. The molecular polarizability anisotropies are evaluated using Lippincott δ-function model, the molecular vibration method, Haller’s extrapolation method and scaling factor method. The molecular polrizabilities, αe and αo are calculated using Vuks’ isotropic field model and Neugebauer’s anisotropic field model. The orientational order parameter, S, is estimated by using the molecular polarizability values calculated from refractive index and denstity data as well as polarizability anisotropy values calculated as a function of temperature in the nematic phase of both of the dimers. These values are discussed with reference to the order parameter values obtained directly from the optical birefringence, Δn, data without assuming any internal field. A comparison of the order parameter values from all of these methods was carried out in the light of available literature data.

Intratympanic Injections: An Unsolved Mystery

Aims: The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness of intratympanic dexamethasone injections as a treatment for severe disabling tinnitus and also observe its effect on hearing loss if any. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients with severe disabling tinnitus in the age group 20 to 60 years were selected and randomly assigned to receive intratympanic injections of a dexamethasone solution 4 mg/ml (0.5 ml) or isotonic saline (0.5 ml) solution under topical anaesthesia, once per week for 4 weeks using a zero degree endoscope. Improvement in tinnitus was assessed using a visual analog scale, considering 2-point improvement as significant and alteration in hearing if any was noted by pure tone audiometery before and after the therapy. Results: The improvement in tinnitus was not significant, with no alteration in audiometery reports. Conclusions: Intratympanic therapy is an attractive mode of treatment because of its highly targeted delivery, low concentration of the drugs required and a very good patient tolerance. Although there has been no breakthrough in intratympanic therapy for tinnitus or other otological conditions, accessibility to the inner ear through the semipermeable round window membrane holds many promises in the near future.

Prolonged Middle Ear Ventilation by Cartilage-grommet Tympanoplasty

In 1994, the American Otological Society reported favourable experience with composite cartilage shield tympanoplasty. The tragal cartilage with a grommet inserted in it was used for tympanoplasty in our patient with unilateral CSOM, supposedly because of severe chronic eustachian tube dysfunction. The marriage of cartilage tympanoplasty with grommet insertion was aimed to add the advantages and abolish the disadvantages of both the procedures. In 1990 Lary Hall first introduced the “long term ventilation of the middle ear” with a T-tube placed in the tragal cartilage perichondrium composite island graft. T-tube insertion in the cartilage has been described. But insertion of the Indian Sheperds grommet (ventilation tube) in the cartilage graft as described in this case and its technique are possibly the first of its kinds in literature. The report is aimed to ignite innovation of newer and better techniques of cartilage tympanoplasty.

Thornwaldt Cyst: Case Report

Thornwaldt cyst is benign, mucosal congenital cyst which is located in upper nasopharynx. It developed in nasopharyngeal bursa if opening of bursa is occluded due to infection or inflammation. It is rare congenital cyst present in nasopharyngeal bursa. Its incidence is 3% in adults [1]. The usual age of presentation is 2nd and 3rd decade [1]. It is usually asymptomatic and incidental finding on MRI but it can present as nasal obstruction, post nasal drip, halitosis, occipital headache, foreign body sensation in throat [1] [2]. Here we are presenting a case report of 23 years old male presented with foreign body sensation in throat since 5 months. On oral and nasal endoscopic examination cystic mass in nasopharynx seen, bulging in oropharynx. MRI shows cystic mass arising from left side of nasopharynx popping up in oropharynx. Cyst then excised with diode laser with both endonasal and transoral approach with zero degree rigid endoscope. Histopathology confirmed the cyst as thornwaldt cyst.

Non-linear analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) plays an important role as a noninvasive marker to diagnose the diseased heart. Nonlinear analysis has become important as heart is treated as a complex system. The sample entropy has been used as a nonlinear measure. To find sample entropy it is required to choose appropriate values of the embedding dimension ‘m’ and threshold ‘r’ respectively. The values are chosen based on the literature. The multi-scale entropy (MSE) methods are normally used to find the heart dynamic over the entire recorded period by scaling the data by 1 to 20 which involves larger data handling at lower scales. The aim of this paper is to detect and study the nonlinear dynamics of the heart over the entire period of recorded data of normal healthy heart (NHH) and congestive heart failure (CHF) subjects The idea of estimating the sample entropy in different segments is useful to detect the nonlinear dynamics of the heart present in the entire length of the recorded data. This is achieved by proposing a new method multiple scale entropy (MPE) for estimating the sample entropy in different segments of long length of the recorded data. The MPE method uses short length of data in all scales by taking the data at regular intervals (2 h) of the recorded data to find the heart dynamics. The CHF and NHH have been analyzed using MPE method. The results showed that the mean SampEn obtained for different segments of data relating to NHH subjects is ~1.35 and for CHF subjects it is ~0.8 which suggests that the mean value of sample entropy for normal healthy heart is higher than the congestive heart failure subjects. Similarly the results exhibited higher MPE values for healthy heart data and lower MPE values for congestive heart failure data. The results are presented and discussed in the paper.

Bacteriophages represent a rich and unique resource of anti-infectives to counter the global problem of antibiotic resis- tance. In this work, we assessed the bactericidal activity of two virulent staphylococcal phages, K and 44AHJD, against S. aureus isolates of clinical significance, and tested their efficacy in vivo. The phage cocktail lysed >85% of the clinical isolates tested. Both the phages were purified by ion-exchange column chromatography following propagation in bioreactors. The purity profiles of the ion-exchange purified phages were compared with those of phages purified using cesium chloride density gradient ultracentrifugation, and infectiousness of the purified phages was confirmed by plaque forming assay. The in vivo efficacy of a phage cocktail was evaluated in an experimental murine nasal colonization model, which showed that the phage cocktail was efficacious. To our knowledge, this is the first report of phage use in an in vivo model of nasal carriage.

Studies on Soil Test Crop Response Based Integrated Plant Nutrition System(STCR-IPNS)were conducted for three years adopting the Inductive cum Targeted Yield Model,on alfisols of Unified Andhra Pradesh,Southern India during summer 2016-2018 in order to develop fertilizer prescriptions through IPNS for the desired yield targets of Sesamum under field *** bases for making the fertilizer prescriptions *** requirement(NR),contribution of nutrients from soil(Cs),fertilizer(Cf)and vermicompost(CVC)were computed using the field experimental *** use of these basic parameters,the fertilizer prescription equations were developed under NPK alone and under IPNS for the desired yield targets of Sesamum for a range of soil test *** quantity of fertilizers contributed by the application of vermicompost was *** requirement to produce 100 kg of sesame seed was worked out to be 10.20 kg N,3.90 kg P2O5 and 5.22 kg *** the present investigation,the requirement of N was higher which is followed by K2O and *** requirement of N was 2.62 times higher than P and 1.95 times higher than *** percent contribution of N,P and K was 12.25,15.75 and 6.00 from soils,41.68,22.85 and 59.97 from fertilizer and 9.87,6.74 and 18.65 from organic manures,*** the Inductive cum Targeted Yield Model used to develop fertilizer prescription equations provides a strong basis for soil fertility maintenance consistent with high productivity and efficient nutrient management in farming for sustainable and enduring agriculture.
