Environmental monitoring of the Zhujiang Estuary and its coastal waters

The Zhujiang (Pearl River) Estuary is a complex water system whose catchments basincovers a very large part of southern China. The large quantity of fresh water carried by the river system flows into the northern coast of the South China Sea through its eight inlets. The Zhujiang River Delta has experienced the fastest economic growth in China during the past two decades. Rapid population expansion and increased industrial development coupled with insufficient waste management turned the Zhujiang Estuary into waste disposal channels just before entering the coastal waters. The water quality of the estuaries and the coastal oceans has become polluted. During the past two years, an intensive study and monitoring efforts of the pollutions of these waters have been made. A systematic and integrated monitoring task including shore-based measurements, shipboard in-situ measurements, and satellite and radar remote sensing surveys has been completed. Comprehensive collection of physical, chemical and biological parameters has been accomplished and a database has been established. Unlike the previous large scale-monitoring task in which the various pollutant concentrations were the objective, the present study aims to understand the process of the pollution from their initial disposal to their final states. The understanding of the processes makes it possible to evaluate the severity of the pollution with respect to the sustainability. Also the objective is to incorporate these processes into the mathematical models from which a predictive capability of the pollution situation can be realized. The present presentation will describe the planning, methodology and the results of this effort.

Effect of various melt and heat treatment conditions on impact toughness of A356 aluminum alloy

The microstructure and impact behavior of A356 aluminum alloy were studied after melt treatment processes of grain refinement and modification under both non-heat treated and T6 heat treated conditions. The modification and grain refinement were done with the addition of Al-10%Sr and Al-5Ti-1B master alloys, respectively. All casting parameters were kept constant in order to focus on the influence of mentioned treatments. The results indicate that the eutectic silicon morphology is the main parameter to control the impact behavior of alloy. Consequently, the individual grain refinement of as-cast alloy does not improve the impact toughness as the modification does. While, simultaneous grain refinement and modification provide higher impact toughness in comparison with individual treatments. T6 heat treatment of the alloy improves the impact toughness under all melt-treated conditions. This is related to the further modification of eutectic silicon particles. To verify the results and clarify the mechanisms, three-point bending test and fractography were used to interpret the improvement of impact toughness of the alloy.

Soliton solutions of a class of generalized nonlinear evolution equations are discussed analytically and numerically. This is done by using a travelling wave method to formulate one soliton solution and the finite difference method to the numerical solutions and the interactions between the solitons for the generalized nonlinear Schrdinger equations. The characteristic behavior of the nonlinearity admitted in the system has been investigated and the soliton states of the system in the limit when α→0 and α→∞ have been studied. The results presented show that the soliton phenomenon is characteristics associated with the nonlinearities of the dynamical systems.

Photo-Induced DNA-Dependent Conformational Changes in Silver Nanoparticles

The goal of the present investigation is to study the interaction of AgNPs with thymus DNA by traditional and original spectra-photometric and thermo-dynamic methods and approaches in darkness and under photo-irradiation. 1) At the interaction of DNA with nano-particles hypsochromic shift of 6 nm and hypochromic effect of 20% of AgNPs absorption band are observed. 2) At photo-irradiation (λ = 436 nm or full spectrum of visible band) of AgNPs-DNA complexes absorption spectra band width is changed from 140 nm to 360 nm at half-height. Besides, isosbestic point is observed. 3) Kinetic study of photo-diffusion has made it possible to determine desorption rate constant and desorption reaction activation energy that are equal respectively to kd @ 9 ′ 10-5 s-1, Ed @ 80 kJ/M Ag0 for AgNPs bound with DNA. It is shown that AgNPs represent liquid drops which moisture the DNA surface at interaction. At photo-irradiation of AgNPs-DNA complex DNA dependant conformational transition takes place due to fast and intensive heating.

Microstructural Evolution and Service Performance of Cold-drawn Pure Aluminum Conductor Wires

Microstructures and service performance(mechanical and electrical properties) of the commercially pure Al conductor wires subjected to different cold drawing strains were investigated. The results show that the microstructures of the cold-drawn Al wires along the radial direction were inhomogeneous, i.e. the texture in the center region was strong and weak components, while that in the surface region shifted from the initial cubic texture to a component and finally developed into a strong component. The volume fraction of the high angle grain boundaries in the surface region was higher than that in the center region. The cold-drawing process greatly enhanced the yield strength of the pure Al wires while retained the acceptable electrical resistivity. The strengthening mechanism and the variation of electrical conductivity of the cold-drawn Al wires are discussed through correlating with microstructure evolution.

The g?ksun(Kahramanmaras)ophiolite(gKO),cropping out in a tectonic window bounded by the Malatya metamorphic unit on both the north and south,is located in the EW-trending lower nappe zone of the southeast Anatolian orogenic belt(Turkey).It exhibits a complete oceanic lithospheric section and overlies the Middle Eocene Maden group/Complex with a tectonic contact at its *** ophiolitic rocks and the tectonically overlying Malatya metamorphic(continental)unit were intruded by I-type calc-alkaline Late Cretaceous granitoid(~81-84 Ma).The ultramafic to cumulates in the gKO are represented by wehrlite,plagioclase wehrlite,olivine gabbro and *** crystallization order for the cumulate rocks is as follows:olivine±chromian spinel→clinopyroxene→*** major and trace element geochemistry as well as the mineral chemistry of the ultramafic to mafic cumulate rocks suggest that the primary magma generating the gKO is compositionally similar to that observed in the modern island-arc tholeiitic *** mineral chemistry of the ultramafic to mafic cumulates indicates that they were derived from a mantle source that was previously depleted by earlier partial melting *** highly magnesian olivine(Fo77-83),clinopyroxene(Mg#of 82-90)and the highly Ca-plagioclase(An81-89)exhibit a close similarity to those,which formed in a supra-subduction zone(SSZ)*** field and the geochemical evidence suggest that the gKO formed as part of a much larger sheet of oceanic lithosphere,which accreted to the base of the Tauride active continental margin,including the ispendere,K?mürhan and the guleman *** latter were contemporaneous and genetically/tectonically related within the same SSZ setting during the closure of the Neotethyan oceanic basin(Berit Ocean)between the Taurides to the north and the Bitlis-Pütürge massif to the south during the Late Cretaceous.

Optical properties of phosphate glasses co-doped with Yb^(3+) and silver nanoparticles

We report the fabrication and spectroscopic characterization of Yb^3＋-doped phosphate glass, also containing silver nitrate. Scanning electron microscopy（SEM） provides the evidence of the formation of silver nano-particles（SNPs）, which are formed as a consequence of melting and thermal decomposition of Ag NO3. Absorption spectra of the samples in the visible-to-near-infrared spectral range reveal the presence of bands centered at 410 nm associated with the SNP-plasmon resonance, and at 976 nm due to the Yb^3＋. Under 916-nm laser-diode pumping, the effect of the SNP reflects that： i） the fluorescence in the 950-nm–1150-nm spectral range is strongly enhanced（～ 30 times）, while the fluorescence decay time associated with the ^2F5/2→^2F7/2transition of Yb^3＋ increases 25%, and ii） the basic lasing properties（saturation pumping intensity, the emission and absorption cross sections） are substantially improved.

Laser surface texturing is a versatile approach for manufacturing implants with suitable surfaces for *** work explores the use of laser to fabricate NiTi textured implants,testing two dif-ferent groove-based *** performance was evaluated in vivo through implantation in Sprague Dawley rats’femur,being then analyzed after 4 and 12 weeks of ***-out experiments and histological characterization allowed to assess bone-implant bond and osseointegration and to compare the laser textured solutions with non-textured *** showed that,at 4 weeks of implantation,mainly immature woven bone was present whilst at 12 weeks a more mature bone had ***-sidering the largest implantation time(12 weeks),results showed extraction forces considerably higher for textured implants(g2 and g3).Moreover,when comparing g2 and g3,it was found that g2(having the highest textured surface area)displayed the maximum extraction force among all groups,with an increase of 212%when compared to non-textured implants(g1).These results prove that the design and manufacturing technology are effective to promote an im-proved bone-implant bond,aiming the development of orthopedic implants.
