Nursery Fertilizer Application Increases Rice Growth and Yield in Rainfed Lowlands with or without Post-Transplanting Crop stress

In rainfed lowlands, the beneficial effects on rice (Oryza sativa) yield from fertilizing the seedling nursery may depend on the occurrence of water and nutrient stress after transplanting into the mainfield. The aim of the study was to test the effect of seedling age and nursery fertilisation on rice yield when plants experienced nutrient and water stress regimes after transplanting. The first experiment, conducted during the wet season in a low-fertility rainfed lowland field in south-east Cambodia, examined the effect of three levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and cow manure (CM) application to the nursery and three ages of seedlings at transplanting (4, 6 and 9 weeks after sowing: WAs) on the growth of a traditional photoperiod-sensitive rice cultivar. Increasing fertilizer application to the nursery increased shoot dry weight and grain yield at each age of seedling transplanted. shoot dry weight and grain yield from seedlings transplanted 6 WAs were 20% and 10% higher than those from the seedlings transplanted at the other ages. seedlings transplanted at 4 WAs, which experienced a temporary submergence for 3 days after transplanting, recorded 5% greater seedling mortality from the unfertilized than fertilized nursery soil. The taller seedlings transplanted at 6 WAs experienced less mortality despite more severe submergence. The second experiment was conducted at seven rainfed lowland sites across Cambodia to test the benefit of N alone and N+P application to the nursery on rice yields in farmers’ fields. In four out of seven trials, grain yield increases averaged 13% with N+P applied to the nursery whereas N alone increased grain yield at two sites and depressed yield at two. Overall, fertilizer application in the nursery produced more vigorous seedlings with higher nutrient concentration which survived submergence and grew better with or without drought or nutrient stress after transplanting, leading to increased yields of rice. Continuous Apomorphine Infusion in Patients with Advanced Parkinson’s Disease with Varying Degrees of Functional Impairment

Introduction: Continuous apomorphine infusion (CAI) is effective in improving complications in advanced Parkinson’s disease (APD). The effectiveness and tolerance of CAI in patients with APD with varying degrees of functional impairment was studied. Methods: In this comparative observational study, consecutive APD who started treatment with CAI were included. They were classified into two groups of functional impairment: A) moderate (schwab and England (s & E) = 60% - 80% and Hoehn and Yahr (H & Y) = 2 - 3;Group (A), and (B) severe (s & E 3;Group B). Clinical follow-up was performed with concomitant medication and CAI adjustment at 3, 6 and 12 months. Clinical evaluation included a dyskinesia diary and AIMs, s & E, NPI, NMss and HADs questionnaires. Results: Eighteen patients participated (A = 9 and B = 9) with EP diagnosed 7 (A) and 13 (B) years before. Their baseline dose of levodopa was 728 mg (A) and 925 mg (B), which did not change during follow-up. Dopamine agonists were progressively reduced in both groups. Progressive titration of CAI resulted in abandonment of apomorphine bolus administration. Both groups experienced improvements in all variables, higher in group A;motor fluctuations = 69% (A), 53% (B);AIMs = 82% (A), 71 (B);s & E = 32% (A), 18% (B);NMs = 62% (A), 19% (B);NPI = 75% (A), 50% (B);HADs (anxiety) = 26% (A), 21% (B);HADs (depression) = 52% (A), 31% (B). Adverse effects were generally mild and resolved without reducing CAI dose. There were no withdrawals. Conclusions: Patients with APD and moderate functional impairment treated with CAI may obtain greater functional, cognitive and emotional improvement than patients more severely affected.

Background: since primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is usu- ally diagnosed in postmenopausal women with minor cholestasis, it has been que stioned whether PBC itself represents a further risk for osteoporosis. Aim: To a ssess the prevalence and risk factors for osteoporosis in an unselected series o f women with PBC. Patients and Methods: 142 women with PBC (age: 54.3±0.8 years ) and an age-matched control group. Osteoporosis was established by densitometr y (bone mineral density below -2.5 T-sc- ore). Age, duration and severity of PBC, body mass inde- x, menopausal status, histological stage and markers of bone turnover were ass essed. Results: Prevalence of osteoporosis was higher in PBC (32.4%) than in no rmal women (11. 1%)-(RR: 3.83, 95%CI: 2.59-5.67, Psteoporosis was associated with older age, menopausal status, body mass index, longer PBC durat ion, advanced histological stage, high bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase, and l owalbumin and prothrombin index. Regression analysis identified older age, highe r Mayo risk score, lower body mass index and advanced histological stage but not menopause as the independent risk factors for osteoporosis. Conclusions: Osteop orosis is more prevalent in women with PBC than in the general population. Age a nd severity of the disease, but not menopausal status, are the main risk factors for osteoporosis in this liver disease.

Antioxidant activity of Bios-p peptide analogue in HEK293T cells and three-dimensional structure prediction

studies had indicate that excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ros) affect cellular signaling pathways, which is associated with pathological and physiological conditions such as cancer, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases In this context, our laboratory has obtained the Bios-p, a ros modulator, peptide analogue by sequencing from the seed of Bauhinia bauhinoides, which represents the active 12-amino acid, obtained from the inhibitor BbKI protease and we predicted the three-dimensional structure of Bios-p analogue peptide using homology modeling, being patented by the working group of Dr. Maria Luiza Vilela Oliva of UNIFEsP, Brazil (a member of our cluster). The protective effect on the viability and antioxidant capacity of Bios-p was studied in HEK 293T cells under oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) using sYTOXGREEN/DHE and luminescence assay. The three-dimensional structure of Bios-p peptide analogue was predicted by homology-based modeling using Modeller9v8. The pretreatment with different concentrations of Bios-p (1 μM - 10 μM) showed an increase of 53.83% ± 3.86% the cellular viability in under oxidative stress compared to control. Furthermore, the results to indicate that HEK293T cells by incubating for 24 h with Bios-p shown a significant decreased of basal extracellular ros on total cell population in 89.67% ± 0.76%, compared to control in the absence of the analogue. similarly it is observed that Bios-p has a significant antioxidant effect on extracellular ros production when cells are subjected to oxidative stress induced by 200 μM H2O2 in 64.37% ± 4.63%, compared to control in absence of H2O2 and Bios-p. These results suggest that Bios-p has potential as antioxidant agent in cells HEK293T under H2O2-induced oxidative stress and that can protect the cells viability as concentration-dependent, and we propose a new biotechnological tool for modulate the ros production.

In Chile elevated percentage of population have cardiovascular diseases, 70% of this populations is a hypertensive peoples. The Ruta graveolens (Ruta) is a medicinal plant used in different parts of the world with different therapeutics properties like dermatologic as far as anti-helmintic properties. We analyzed the vascular action measuring the tension to identify vasodilator effect of Ruta extract in norm-tense rat’s aorta incubated and measured in isolated organ bath, and evaluating the toxicity effect in CRL-1730 cell line, through enzymatic assay (MTT), confocal microscopy (propidium iodide stain) and flow cytometry (TUNEL assay), including extracellular reactive oxygen species (ros) production through luminescence assay. The results show with DE50 29 ± 0.1 μg/mL evidenced vasodilatation, partially endothelium-depend. The cytotoxicity showed with DE50 304.6 ± 2 μg/mL in enzymatic assay (MTT) while evidenced membrane permeability in high concentrations (1500 μg/mL), DNA fragmentation in absence of oxidative stress in only observed when high concentrations of Ruta are used over the cell culture. The vasodilatation activity is executed in subtoxic concentration and partially endothelium-depend without permeability effect in the membrane and deterioration of the cells viability suggesting a complex effect of Ruta preparation in the regulation of vascular tone.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a clinically approved cancer treatment that uses energy of light to generate active substances that cause damage to the cancer. Photosensitizers are employed to absorb light and generate toxic reactive oxygen species (ros) to damage biomolecules like DNA. At the same time, some chemotherapy drugs like nucleotide analogues can provide mechanism-guided promotion in the treatment efficacy of PDT. However, the photosensitizer and chemotherapy drugs used in PDT is usually organic molecules, which suffers from bad solubility, fast clearance, and acute toxicity. To achieve targeted treatment, a reasonable delivery system is necessary. Therefore, we reported a metal-phenolic network where IR780 and gemcitabine were coupled chemically to overcome these shortcomings. The enhanced PDT effects can be realized by the promoted cell death both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, the synergistic therapy also induced T-cell mediated anti-tumor immune response, which was significant for the inhibition of distant tumor growth. This work expanded the biomedical application of metal-phenolic materials and contribute to the wider application of photodynamic cancer therapy.

Renal dopaminergic system:Pathophysiological implications and clinical perspectives

Fluid homeostasis, blood pressure and redox balance in the kidney are regulated by an intricate interaction between local and systemic anti-natriuretic and natriuretic systems. Intrarenal dopamine plays a central role on this interactive network. By activating specifc receptors, dopamine promotes sodium excretion and stimulates anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory pathways. Different pathological scenarios where renal sodium excretion is dysregulated, as in nephrotic syndrome, hypertension and renal infammation, can be associated with impaired action of renal dopamine including alteration in biosynthesis, dopamine receptor expression and signal transduction. Given its properties on the regulation of renal blood fow and sodium excretion, exogenous dopamine has been postulated as a potential therapeutic strategy to preventrenal failure in critically ill patients. The aim of this review is to update and discuss on the most recent findings about renal dopaminergic system and its role in several diseases involving the kidneys and the potential use of dopamine as a nephroprotective agent.

Medical schools that received the PROMED (program for the encouragement of curricular changes in medical courses)—Preconditions and change process

since the Curriculum Guidelines (CG) which were created in 2001 and PROMED (Program for the Encouragement of Curricular Changes in Medical Courses), several schools have applied for this incentive. Medical schools (Ms) have faced important changes in their curriculum throughout the years. The purpose is to verify if medical schools that received PROMED already had a historical of curricular changes. several interviews, which were carried out with PROMED coordinators, were recorded, transcribed and analyzed according to the Bardin’s content analysis technique. Later, these interviews were later categorized into nine themes. This paper analyses the Medical school History category which encompasses three subcategories: existence of a former changing history;need to overcome the model and changing period. It is highlighted that medical schools that received PROMED had a previous changing historical which was sometimes located in anti-hegemonic niches. It is noticeable, however, that such changes were not enough to affect the comprehension of healthillness process and its consequent results. PROMED was, effectively, the reference for medical schools implementing the C.G. which represents, now, a benchmarking for all new and old schools in the country.

The Reality of Children and Adolescents with Meningomyelocele and Their Families, in the City of Belo Horizonte and Its Metropolitan Area, Brazil

Meningomyelocele is a congenital defect involving the central nervous system which is one of the most common among those compatible with life. Children affected by this condition present neurological, orthopedic, renal and urogenital complications, needing lifelong healthcare provisions. The aim of this study was to analyze the reality experienced by children and adolescents with meningomyelocele and their families in the city of Belo Horizonte and its metropolitan area, Brazil. A descriptive and exploratory study was conducted via three home visits and a scripted interview with 16 children and adolescents with meningomyelocele and their families. It was observed that mean age of children and adolescents was 12 years old, most of them did not walk (n = 10), and depended on wheel chairs and parental care. Mothers represented the main caregivers and most (n = 12) had to leave their formal work outside of the home, compromising family income. It concluded that the families had socioeconomic levels aggravated by difficulties in purchasing materials needed for their children’s care. some social challenges included barriers to education and the acquisition of medications and materials, demonstrating the need for planning public policies aimed at integrating different health services.
