Assessment of ghrelin and leptin receptor levels in postmenopausal women who received oral or transdermal menopausal hormonal therapy

Objective： In postmenopausal women, an increased leptin concentration and reduced levels of ghrelin and adiponectin were observed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of the active form of ghrelin, total ghrelin, leptin receptor, lipoprotein（a）（Lp（a））, and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 （PAl-l） in postmenopausal women who received oral or transdermal menopausal hormonal therapy （MHT）. Methods： The study involved 76 healthy women： 46 women aged from 44 to 58 years who received oral （26） or transdermal （20） MHT; the control group consisted of 30 women aged from 44 to 54 years who did not receive MHT. The plasma concentrations of total ghrelin, the active form of ghrelin, Lp（a）, and PAI-I：Ag were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （ELISA）. The concentration of the leptin receptor was measured by enzyme immunometric assay （EIA）. Results： We observed a significantly higher concentration o~ total ghrelin and the active form of ghrelin in women who received transdermal MHT in comparison with those who took oral MHT. We also found a significantly lower concentration of total ghrelin in women who received oral MHT compared with the control group. A higher concentration of PAl-1 ：Ag was found in the group of women who took transdermal MHT in comparison with those who took oral MHT and with the control group. The differences were statistically significant. Additionally, we found a significant negative correlation between the concentrations of total ghrelin and PAl-1 ：Ag and a positive correlation between the concentrations of total ghrelin and leptin receptor in women who received transdermal MHT. Conclusions： The study showed that women who used transdermal MHT had higher levels of total ghrelin than women who took oral MHT. This indicates a beneficial effect of the transdermal route of MHT. Nanoparticle Technology as a Double-Edged Sword: Cytotoxic, Genotoxic and Epigenetic Effects on Living Cells

Nanoparticles are considered as powerful tools in nanotechnological applications. Due to their unique physicochemical properties, their interactions with different biological systems have been shown. Nanomaterials have been successfully used as coating materials or treatment and diagnosis tools. Nevertheless, toxic effects of nanoparticles in vitro and in vivo have also been reported. Here, we summarize the current state of knowledge on exposure routes, cellular uptake and toxicological activities of the commonly used nanoparticles. In this context, we discuss the mechanisms of toxicity of nanoparticles involving perturbation of redox milieu homeostasis and cellular signaling pathways.

Capability of the Free-Ion Eigenstates for Crystal-Field Splitting

Any electronic eigenstate of the paramagnetic ion open-shell is characterized by the three independent multipole asphericities for and 6 related to the second moments of the relevant crystal-field splittings by , where . The Ak as the reduced matrix elements can serve as a reliable measure of the state capability for the splitting produced by the k-rank component of the crystal-field Hamiltonian. These multipolar characteristics allow one to verify any fitted crystal-field parameter set by comparing the calculated second moments and the experimental ones of the relevant crystal-field splittings. We present the multipole characteristics Ak for the extensive set of eigenstates from the lower parts of energy spectra of the tripositive 4 f N ions applying in the calculations the improved eigenfunctions of the free lanthanide ions obtained based on the M. Reid f-shell programs. Such amended asphericities are compared with those achieved for the simplified Russell-Saunders states. Next, they are classified with respect to the absolute or relative weight of Ak in the multipole structure of the considered states. For the majority of the analyzed states (about 80%) the Ak variation is of order of only a few percent. Some essential changes are found primarily for several states of Tm3+, Er3+, Nd3+, and Pr3+ ions. The detailed mechanisms of such Ak changes are unveiled. Particularly, certain noteworthy cancelations as well as enhancements of their magnitudes are explained.

Soy Consumption and Obesity

Obesity is now present worldwide, including China, India and developing countries. It now seems no longer acceptable to argue that obesity can simply be explained in terms of caloric consumption only using simple concept of energy in and energy out. There may be specific causes of altered metabolism that produce nutritional imbalances. Individual variation in response to food intake may also be considered. Specific substances in the food chain can influence meta-bolism towards an increase in fat deposits. Xenoestrogens have been suggested to have such an influence. Soy contains phytoestrogens plus phytates, protease inhibitors and other anti-nutrients which block or compromise the body’s uptake of essential vitamins and minerals. This may contribute to nutritional anomalies. We analyzed data from WHO and FAO for 167 countries. These contained percentage of obese individuals (BMI > 30 kg/m2), GDP, caloric consump-tion per capita, and sugar and soy consumption per capita. Regressions and partial correlations were used. Soy con-sumption correlates significantly with levels of obesity, irrespective of GDP and caloric intake. For instance, poor Latin America with soy consumption of 28.9 kg/person/year has more obesity (18.4%) than better off European Union (14.1%) consuming 16.1 kg/person/year of soy. Soy consumption seems to contribute approximately 10% - 21% to the worldwide variation in obesity, depending on the method of statistical analysis. The ubiquitous presence of unfermented soy products in mass produced foods seems to be an important contributor to the obesity epidemic.

Renovation of the Centennial Hall

The Centennial Hall was designed as a monumental building entirely of reinforced concrete. Soon it became a model for modernist buildings of that era. During the years 2009-2011, the biggest renovation since its completion took place. All activities described in the following paper aimed to put the Centennial Hall into good repair and adjust it to the applicable requirements of modem public buildings. The primary aim is to preserve the authenticity of the original materials used in construction through the use of remedial technologies, thereby maintaining the historical integrity of the building.

Ecological Analysis of the Influence of ACEIs and ARBs on the COVID-19 Prevalence and Death from COVID-19

Background: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin-II receptor blockers (ARBs) have been an arguable risk factor for COVID-19 diseases because they could upregulate Angiotensin Converting Enzyme-2 (ACE2) expression, facilitating SARS-CoV2 entry to the lungs. Several retrospective clinical studies, however, found no such effect. Here, we explore how the use of ACEIs and ARBs links to COVID-19 across all countries of the world. Methods: Data on the availability of ACEIs and ARBs for 200 countries and on the number of cases and number of deaths per country by 28 December 2020 were extracted from WHO and Worldometer website, respectively. Data on life expectancy at age 65 years as a measure of ageing were from WHO and on Gross Domestic Product Per Capita (GDP PPP) and the percentage of urbanization were from the World Bank. Excel and SPSS v 26 software were used for statistical analyses. Results: In linear regression and logistic conditional regression analysis, GDP correlates with COVID-19 prevalence (rho = 0.66, p > 0.001) and deaths from COVID-19 (rho = 0.55, p Conclusions: Our study based on the global data contradicts findings of most published clinical studies at regional levels. We found that GDP positively correlates with prevalence of and mortality related to COVID-19. ACEI and ARB use increases COVID-19 infectivity and mortality.

Milk in Medical Theory Extant in Celsus＇ De medicina

The research concerns Roman medical galactology, galaktologia iatrike （γαλακτσλσγια ιατρικη）, i.e. the ancient knowledge of milk and its by-products in medical procedures as described by Celsus in his treatise entitled De medicina. The authors elaborate on the sources of Celsus＇ medical theory of milk, comment on the place of the Roman author＇s theory against the doctrinal background of other medical writers of the period, demonstrate pharmacological characteristics attributed to milk and milk-obtained products by Celsus, specify main cures in which milk and its by-products were made use of as either simple or compound medicines, give examples of the latter, delineate the progress of the theory on milk＇s medicinal use, and finally comment on the role of milk and milk-obtained products in the diet of the Mediterranean.
