The development of antibiotics is regarded as one of the most significant scientific advances in modern medicine. Before the commercialization of antibiotics, infectious diseases were catastrophic throughout history [1]. Penicillin was used to treat serious infections in the 1940s, but unfortunately, with the introduction of antibiotics came the emergence of antibiotic resistance [2,3]. Evolved and adapted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains are presently impacting community and healthcare systems across the globe [4].

A conceptual coaxial Pitot tube （PT） has been developed using fiber optic sensors combined with actuators to monitor and maintain its correct operation under different environmental conditions. Experiments were performed showing that the dynamic and static tubes can be cleared of ice. It was also demonstrated that the dynamic tube could be cleared of dust and sand which was not the case for the static tube in the coaxial configuration. An approach was proposed to overcome this problem involving a conventional configuration where the static tube was operated independently orthogonal to the dynamic tube, and a second set of sensors and actuators was used. Sensors and associated actuators were developed for temperature and intensity for a linear PT. The aim of this work is to propose a solution for a problem that has caused the loss of the lives of many passengers and crew of aircraft. Resources were not available to test a full implementation of a PT incorporating the proposed modifications.

We study the effect of particle size polydispersity(δ) on the melting transition(T*), local ordering, solid–liquid coexistence phase and dynamics of two-dimensional Lennard–Jones fluids up to moderate polydispersity by means of computer simulations. The particle sizes are drawn at random from the Gaussian(G) and uniform(U) distribution *** these systems, we further consider two different kinds of particles, viz., particles having the same mass irrespective of size, and in the other case the mass of the particle scales with its size. It is observed that with increasing polydispersity,the value of T*initially increases due to improved packing efficiency(φ) followed by a decrease and terminates at δ ≈8%(U-system) and 14%(G-system) with no significant difference for both mass types. The interesting observation is that the particular value at which φ drops suddenly coincides with the peak of the heat capacity(CP) curve, indicating a transition. The quantification of local particle ordering through the hexatic order parameter(Q_6), Voronoi construction and pair correlation function reveals that the ordering decreases with increasing δ and T. Furthermore, the solid–liquid coexistence region for the G-system is shown to be comparatively wider in the T –δ plane phase diagram than that for the U system. Finally, the study of dynamics reveals that polydisperse systems relax faster compared to monodisperse systems;however, no significant qualitative differences, depending on the distribution type and mass polydispersity, are observed.

Background:To evaluate the effects on near and intermediate visual performance after bilateral Laser Anterior Ciliary Excision(LaserACE)***:LaserACE surgery was performed using the VisioLite 2.94μm erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet(Er:YAG)ophthalmic laser system in 4 oblique quadrants on the sclera over the ciliary muscle in 3 critical zones of physiological importance(over the ciliary muscles and posterior zonules)with the aim to improve natural dynamic accommodative *** was performed on 26 patients(52 eyes).Outcomes were analyzed using visual acuity testing,Randot stereopsis,and the CatQuest 9SF patient ***:Binocular uncorrected near visual acuity(UNVA)improved from+0.20±0.16 logmaR preoperatively,to+0.12±0.14 logmaR at 24 months postoperatively(p=0.0014).There was no statistically significant loss in distance corrected near visual acuity(DCNVA).Binocular DCNVA improved from+0.21±0.17 logmaR preoperatively,to+0.11±0.12 logmaR at 24 months postoperatively(p=0.00026).Stereoacuity improved from 74.8±30.3 s of arc preoperatively,to 58.8±22.9 s of arc at 24 months postoperatively(p=0.012).There were no complications such as persistent hypotony,cystoid macular edema,or loss of best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA).Patients surveyed indicated reduced difficulty in areas of near vision,and were overall satisfied with the ***:Preliminary results of the LaserACE procedure show promising results for restoring visual performance for near and intermediate visual tasks without compromising distance vision and without touching the visual *** visual function and visual acuity improvements had clinical *** satisfaction was high postoperatively and sustained over 24 months.

In the numerical study of rough surfaces in contact problem, the flexible body beneath the roughness is commonly assumed as a half-space or a half-plane. The surface displacement on the boundary, the displacement components and state of stress inside the half-space can be determined through the convolution of the traction and the corresponding influence function in a closed-form. The influence function is often represented by the Boussinesq-Cerruti solution and the Flamant solution for three-dimensional elasticity and plane strain/stress, respectively. In this study, we rigorously show that any numerical model using the above mentioned half-space solution is a special form of the boundary element method(BEM). The boundary integral equations(BIEs) in the BEM is simplified to the Flamant solution when the domain is strictly a half-plane for the plane strain/stress condition. Similarly, the BIE is degraded to the Boussinesq-Cerruti solution if the domain is strictly a half-space. Therefore, the numerical models utilizing these closed-form influence functions are the special BEM where the domain is a half-space(or a half-plane). This analytical work sheds some light on how to accurately simulate the non-half-space contact problem using the BEM.

Referring to Third-Persons in English Interaction： A Single Case Analysis

Talking about and referring to others is a fundamentally human activity that relies on the meaningful use of referring expressions for interlocuters to be able to identify the specific individual( s) being spoken of. With a primary focus on practices for referring to third parties,the broad aim of this paper is to show that whilst the selection of referring expression is based on complex,deeply social and cultural conventions,it is also a highly systematic and orderly activity. More specifically,this paper explores an interactional 'puzzle' contained in a single piece of data,in which a daughter — in conversation with her mother — refers to her father( her mother's ex-husband) in three different ways in quick succession. In doing so,we illustrate the potential interactional import of referring expressions for accomplishing social action beyond indexing an individual. In analysing this single case,one procedure for doing conversation analytic work is also illustrated. That is,in contrast to building and analysing collections,this paper draws on and applies what is already known from previous conversation analytic literature about practices for referring to persons. In analysing one fragment in which reference to a third party is made,we will review the fundamentals of the organisation of person reference in English.
