Factors Associated with Acute Respiratory Infections in Children Aged 0 - 5 years in the yénawa District of Cotonou (Benin) in 2023

Introduction: Acute respiratory infections remain one of the main causes of mortality in children aged 0 to 5. This work aimed to study the associated factors with the occurrence of acute respiratory infections in children 0 to 5 years old in yénawa, Cotonou in 2023. Subjects and Method: It was an analytical cross-sectional study of children aged 0 - 5 years and their mothers in yénawa, selected by four-degree random sampling. The sampling size, calculated using the Schwartz formula, was 126 children and 126 mothers. The dependent variable was the occurrence of acute respiratory infections. The independent variables were classified into four groups: socio-demographic and economic characteristics, behavioral factors, child-related factors, and environmental factors. Data collected by observation and questionnaire survey were analyzed using STATA version 15 software. Associated factors were investigated by bivariate analysis and multiple logistic regression, at the 5% significance level. Results: A total of 126 children aged 0 - 5 years and 126 mothers were surveyed, aged 23.5 (11 - 36) months and 30 (18 - 48) years respectively. The prevalence of acute respiratory infections was 74.60% (CI95% = 66.89 to 82.30). The associated factors were the mother’s age between 18 and 28 (OR = 10.77;CI95% = 1.89 to 61.27;p = 0.007), the use of charcoal/wood for cooking (OR = 7.36;IC = 1.99 to 27.10;p = 0.003)), children's poor personal hygiene (OR = 8.87;IC = 2.92 to 26.97;p 0.001)), and cohabitation with domestic animals (OR = 7.27;IC = 1.67 to 31.71;p = 0.015). Conclusion: Communicating with mothers about the factors identified will help reduce the prevalence of acute respiratory infections in children aged 0 to 5.

Effect of vitamin E on oxidative stress status in small intestine of diabetic rat

AIM:To investigate the effect of vitamin E on oxidative stress status in the small intestine of diabetic rats. METHODS:Twenty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups:Control (C),non-treated diabetic (NTD) and vitamin E-treated diabetic (VETD) groups. The increases in lipid peroxidation,protein oxidation and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in these three groups was compared after 6 wk. RESULTS:There was no significant difference in catalase activity between NTD and control rats. Compared to NTD rats,the treatment with vitamin E significantly decreased lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation,and also increased catalase activity and SOD. CONCLUSION:The results revealed the occurrence of oxidative stress in the small intestine of diabetic rats. Vitamin E,as an antioxidant,attenuates lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation,and increases antioxidant defense mechanism.

Lipid Peroxidation and Antioxidant Enzymes Evaluation in Lactating Female Albino Rats Following Supplementation with Fermented Soya Bean and Vitamin C

In mammals, lactation is the most energetically demanding period of a female’s reproductive life. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of fermented Soya bean and Vitamin C supplement on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes in lactating albino rats. Thirty five (35) adult female rats were used for this study. At parturition, the animals were randomly divided into five groups of five (5) rats each. Except group four (4) that was subdivided into three (3) sub groups of five animals each (n = 5). Treatment was carried out as follows: Group I: (Normal control) was given normal feed and distilled water, orally (1 ml/kg), Group II: metoclopramide (5 mg/kg), Group III: 100 mg/kg of Vitamin C. The three (3) sub groups under group four (4) received 10%, 20% and 40% soya bean, respectively, Group V: was co-administered with 20% soya bean supplement and Vitamin C (100 mg/kg). Treatment was done for the period of ten (10) days at 06:00 h daily. Although there was an increase in serum MDA concentrations in all the treated groups compared to the control, lipid peroxidation was however significantly higher (P ya bean supplemented groups. This study has shown that supplementation with soya bean induces a mild antioxidant effect by increasing serum level of superoxide dismutase. There was however a significant decrease in serum SOD in the 10% SB group compared to the control. There was a significant difference in serum catalase activity in the group treated with METCL (46.20 ± 1.53), SB 10% (44.00 ± 1.14) and SB 20% (45.20 ± 1.28) compared to the control (52.00 ± 0.71) (P < 0.05). Serum level of glutathione peroxidase GPx showed a significant difference in the group treated with VIT C, SB 10% and SB 20% compared to the control (P < 0.05).

Background: Metabolic acidosis (MA) is a common finding on the surgical ward, more so in the intensive care unit. Diseases affecting the major organ systems of the body and higher grades of surgery are common risk factors for MA. It is associated with poor treatment outcome. Aim: To determine the risk factors and clinical correlates of metabolic acidosis and assess its relationship with treatment outcome. Methodology: A retrospective study at the “Tristate Heart and vascular Center” in Ilishan-Remo South west Nigeria, on patients that had cardiac and vascular surgeries from January 2015 to December 2019. Three hundred and forty two participants took part in the study. The demographic, clinical and laboratory findings were entered. Statistical analysis was with Student’s t-test and Chi square. 萨拉米香肠常以猪肉为主要原料,是常见西式发酵肉制品之一,深受消费者喜爱。为丰富萨拉米口感,实验以牛肉为原料,开发牛肉萨拉米香肠。在传统工艺的基础上,单因素试验确定其最佳添加配方为精盐量2.50%、白砂糖0.60%、辣椒粉0.60%及发酵剂DCM-1 0.15g/kg。优化关键工艺参数:发酵温度(A)、发酵时间(B)、发酵剂DCM-1添加量(C)。采用Box-Behnken响应面分析法进行二次多项回归拟合,得到回归方程为:y=93.80-1.75A-1.75B+2.00C+0.25AB-0.25AC-1.75BC-1.78A2-3.78B2-0.27C2;由回归模型分析,可知牛肉萨拉米香肠的最佳工艺参数为发酵温度36℃、发酵时间22h、发酵剂DCM-1的添加量0.20g/kg。验证试验表明,实际测定值与预测值的误差为3.14%,说明本产品稳定性良好,所得产品风味独特,切面肥瘦均匀、红白分明,淡酸微咸,符合萨拉米香肠的特点。

为了开发低硝色拉米香肠,优化其加工工艺参数。采用二次回归正交旋转组合试验,研究了成熟温度、成熟相对湿度和葡萄糖添加量3个因素对色拉米中亚硝酸盐残留量的影响。结果表明,3个因素对色拉米中亚硝酸盐残留量都有显著影响,影响由大到小依次为:葡萄糖添加量>成熟相对湿度>成熟温度。优化后的色拉米加工工艺参数为:成熟温度18℃、成熟相对湿度83%、葡萄糖添加量0.83g/kg,在此条件下得到的产品的亚硝酸盐残留量为3.64mg/kg。

米兰萨拉米是意大利最传统和最受欢迎的萨拉米之一。文中详细介绍了米兰萨拉米的制作过程,并且对产品进行了4℃、20℃、37℃的贮藏试验。结果表明:米兰萨拉米属于高酸类发酵香肠,随着贮藏时间的延长,贮藏温度越高米兰萨拉米的水分含量、水分活度和乳酸菌数呈下降趋势,蛋白质水解指数呈上升趋势。从有益菌的角度建议消费者,4℃贮藏条件下的米兰萨拉米在干燥结束后60天内(甚至更长时间)可以放心食用;20℃贮藏条件下,在30天内食用最佳;不建议食用37℃贮藏条件下的米兰萨拉米。
