Biomechanical properties of squid suckers were studied to provide inspiration for the development of sucker artefacts for a robotic octopus. Mechanical support of the rings found inside squid suckers was studied by bending tests. tensile tests were carried out to study the maximum possible sucking force produced by squid suckers based on the strength of sucker stalks, normalized by the sucking areas. the squid suckers were also directly tested to obtain sucking forces by a special testing ar- rangement. Inspired by the squid suckers, three types of sucker artefacts were developed for the arm skin of an octopus inspired robot. the first sucker artefact made of knitted nylon sheet reinforced silicone rubber has the same shape as the squid suckers. Like real squid suckers, this type of artefact also has a stalk that is connected to the arm skin and a ring to give radial support. the second design is a straight cylindrical structure with uniform wall thickness made of silicone rubber. One end of the cylinder is directly connected to the arm skin and the other end is open. the final design of the sucker has a cylindrical base and a concave meniscus top. the meniscus was formed naturally using the surface tension of silicone gel, which leads to a higher level of the liquid around the edge of a container. the wall thickness decreases towards the tip of the sucker opening. Sucking forces of all three types of sucker artefacts were measured. Advantages and disadvantages of each sucker type were discussed. the final design of suckers has been implemented to the arm skin prototypes.

A PANI/WO3@cotton thread-based flexible sensor that is capable of detecting NH3 at room temperature is developed here.A layer of WO3 with PANI nanoparticles can be deposited by in-situ *** morphology and structure of the specimens were investigated by utilizing tEM,SEM,XRD and *** sensing performance of the PANI/WO3@cotton sensors with different WO3 molar ratios to NH3 at room temperature was *** results show that the optimal sensor(10 mol%WO3)has a response of 6.0 to 100 ppm NH3,which is significantly higher than that of the sensors based on pristine PANI and other *** PANI/WO3@cotton sensor also displays excellent selectivity,gas response,and flexibility even at room *** unique fiber structure,p-n heterojunction,and the increased protonation of PANI in the composites contribute to the enhanced sensing property.

High energy density lithium-ion(Li-ion)batteries are commonly used *** decades’worth of intense research has led to a good understanding on several aspects of such ***,the issue of their safe storage and transportation is still not widely understood from a materials chemistry *** international regulations require Li-ion cells to be shipped at 30%SOC(State of Charge)or *** this article,the reasons behind this requirement for shipping Li-ion batteries are firstly reviewed and then compared with those of the analogous and recently commercialized sodium-ion(Na-ion)*** such alkali-ion batteries,the safest state from their active materials viewpoint is at 0V or zero energy,and this should be their ideal state for storage/***,a“fully discharged”Li-ion cell used most commonly,composed of graphitebased anode on copper current collector,is not actually at 0V at its rated 0%SOC,contrary to what one might expect—the detailed mechanism behind the reason for this,namely,copper dissolution,and how it negatively affects cycling performance and cell safety,will be summarized *** will be shown that Na-ion cells,capable of using a lighter and cheaper aluminum current collector on the anode,can actually be safely discharged to 0V(true 0%SOC)and beyond,even to reverse polarity(negative voltages).It is anticipated that this article spurs further research on the 0V capability of Na-ion systems,with some suggestions for future studies provided.

Granular mass flows （e.g., debris flows/avalanches） in landslide-prone areas are of great concern because they often cause catastrophic disasters as a result of their long run-out distances and large impact forces. to investigate the factors influencing granular mass flow mobility, experimental tests were conducted in a flume model. Granular materials consisting of homogeneous sand and non- homogeneous sandy soil were used for studying particle size effects. Run-out tests with variable flow masses, water contents, and sloping channel confinement parameters were conducted as well. the results indicated that granular mass flow mobility was significantly influenced by the initial water content; a critical water content corresponding to the smallest flow mobility exists for different granular materials. An increase in the total flow mass generally induced a reduction in the travel angle （an increase in flow mobility）. Consistent with field observations, the travel angles for different granular materials decreased roughly in proportion to the logarithm of mass. the flume model tests illustrate that the measured travel angles increase as the proportion of fine particles increases. Interestingly, natural terrain possesses critical confinement characteristics for different granular mass flows.

One of the practical approaches in identifying structures is the non-linear resonant decay method which identifies a non-linear dynamic system utilizing a model based on linear modal space containing the underlying linear system and a small number of extra terms that exhibit the non-linear *** this paper,the method is illustrated in a simulated system and an experimental *** main objective of the non-linear resonant decay method is to identify the non-linear dynamic systems based on the use of a multi-shaker excitation using appropriated excitation which is obtained from the force appropriation *** experimental application of the method is indicated to provide suitable estimates of modal parameters for the identification of non-linear models of structures.

In the United States, children are not meeting daily recommendationsfor 60 min of moderate・to・vigorous activity.1Because children spend a large portion of their days in school, ithas been further recommended that children accumulate 30 minof their physical activity (PA) during school hours.2 Our previousresearch has demonstrated with objective measures that only8%—9% of elementary school children meet this goal, with anaverage accumulation of 18 min/day.3,4 this finding is of concerngiven the numerous benefits that PA has not only on healthoutcomes,5-8 but also on academic achievement.9 For example,there is heightened awareness that children benefit from PAthroughout the school day in terms of attention to task, memory,behavior, and, ultimately, academic performance.10 Schooladministrators acknowledge this link, but still face barriers toincorporating PA for schoolchildren, including limited time andresources for physical education (PE) and recess.

Analysis of the propagation of waves in the lower hybrid range of frequencies in the past has been done using ray tracing and the WKB *** in algorithms and the availability of massively parallel computer architectures has permitted the solving of themaxwell-Vlasov systemforwave propagation directly[wright et al.,***(2004),11,2473-2479].these simulations have shown that the bridging of the spectral gap(the difference between the high injected phase velocities and the slower phase velocity at which damping on electrons occurs)can be explained by the diffraction effects captured in the full wave algorithm-an effect missing in WKB based ***,these full wave calculations were done with a maxwellian electron distribution and the presence of RF power induces quasilinear velocity space diffusion that causes distortions away from an *** sufficient power,a flattened region or plateau is formed between the point of most efficient damping on electrons at about 2-3 vthe and where collisional and quasilinear diffusion *** address this discrepancy and better model experiment,we have implemented[Valeo et al.,”Full-wave Simulations of LH wave propagation in toroidal plasma with non-maxwellian electron distributions”,18th topical Conference on Radio Frequency Power in Plasmas,AIP Conference Proceedings(2007)]a non-maxwellian dielectric in our full wave *** will show how these effects modify the electron absorption relative to what is found for a maxwellian distribution.
